A PURPOSE FOR THE WHOLE WORLD
Since 1999 when Instituto Elos was dreamed in Brazil it was imagined as an organization to cross the Brazilian borders and spread transformation throughout the world. Even though Elos's founders were all Brazilians, they founded Elos after having intense exchange experiences with young leaders from different countries of South America. To create an organization that would “propel a movement to make the best world we can dream of, a reality now” was a dream shared by a wider group of young Latin Americans. After 10 years Elos had reached over 20 countries, most of them in the American continent but also some African and Asian countries. In Europe the only contact was in Spain. That was when we received the visit of the Dutch young entrepreneur Niels Koldewijn in Santos, at the office of Instituto Elos in Brazil. Niels’s desire to offer a learning opportunity on social technologies for young Dutch entrepreneurs in Brazil met our desire to share our methods and to grow our movement of transformation. This led to the first Oasis Training program that prepared a group of Dutch people to start replicating the Oasis Game in the Netherlands. The next 10 years of this history will be told along this report. Here we just want to say thank you to Niels and all the people who believed in our purpose and made the dream of Elos Foundation possible.
THE JOURNEY OF ELOS FOUNDATION
This is the report of 10 years of transformation under ‘stichting Elos Nederland’, also known as Elos Foundation. Risen from an active movement of people working with the Elos philosophy and oasis game in Holland it created a wave of actions across Holland, Europe and the world that we honour in this report. In 2010 the first Oasis Game was brought to the Netherlands with the support of Oxfams’ E-motive program, giving impulse to the Oasis movement. After one project led to the other the offered support of the Dutch DOEN! Foundation propelled the founding of stichting Elos Nederland in november 2011. It acted as a Holland focussed entity ‘Elos Nederland’ until 2014 where the increasing cross-border work and a closer relationship with Instituto Elos prompted the organization to change towards Elos Foundation. From 2014 till late 2019 it acted as the international arm of Instituto Elos, executing projects based on the Elos Philosophy from Holland in various countries and ambients. In 2020 Instituto Elos has taken over that work and stichting Elos Nederland has closed it doors. Here you’ll find some of the stories of 10 years of giving impulse to make the best world we can dream of, a reality now.

OASIS GAME IN THE NETHERLANDS One year after the first Oasis Games and exchange with E-Motive in 2010, a community mobilization project was facilitated in the makassarplein buurt, Amsterdam East. During the process the Elos Foundation was visited and invited for a conversation with stichting DOEN, which allowed us to dream bigger. In that early stage of bringing the Oasis Game to Holland we felt the need to test it in different environments and agreed to set up projects around temporary unused city plots, in hypermodern yet quite socially segragated ‘phoenix’ communities and rural areas. With these test projects and continuous opportunities to train people in the methodology we got the opportunity to build a community of learning and expertise around the newly founded Elos Nederland. While executing, sharing, building capacity and learning by doing in 2012 this partnership with stichting DOEN was extended with an additional program with the purpose of geographical spreading and building visibility of our work through a video and a book. In the meantime the variety of contexts where we applied the Elos philosophy increased, from working in schools, with changemakers, in assylum centres, rural settings to urban creative neighborhoods. The bottom-line was that the philosophy and its seven steps worked in getting people to collectively move. Sometimes we built a ‘musictemple’ in one day only and sometimes the miracle of the process was expressed in the new confidence build amongst neighbors and the voices of pride and happiness shared in the closing circle.

OASIS CARIBE: A SPARK IN OTRABANDA In may 2012 Elos Foundation was invited to host an Oasis training in Otrobanda, a community on the island of Curaçao. Invited by USONA and supported by Stichting DOEN a team of Elos Foundation and Instituto Elos worked 7 days, using the Oasis Game, to get over 150 mobilized in the hands-on to build the common dream of a play-ground, soccerfield and sitting area. Most of all this inspired community member Kurt Schoop to go deeper into the Elos philosophy by participating in the Warriors Without Weapons program in Brazil. In the following year the work naturally started to spread across the island of Curaçao as well as in the area. The attention started to grow and the amount of people wanting to be part of this new positive wave in the caribbean increased. The Elos Foundation hosted two other Oasis Games that year on the island of Sint Maarten and in one of the poorest communities of Curaçao Klein Santa Martha while Kurt had been able to host his first Oasis Game with support of PwC in the community of Nieuw Nederland.
OCM AS A REGIONAL REFERENCE
With growing attention and an entrepreneurial attitude Kurt and some local partners started dreaming bigger; 'what if we created a movement of Oasis’ across the Caribbean?’ Elos Foundation’s role in this phase moves from initiating, to co-facilitating, to coaching of the core-team on more strategical and organizational questions, supporting the OCM with a governance model and an organizational model for the network to grow. Besides creating more interconnection and structure among the islands, the OCM also builds more capacity by having more people trained in Brazil, giving a basis for a sustainable movement that can take itself beyond the Dutch Caribbean. After 3 years of working together and the community of facilitators and entrepreneurs growing, the Oasis Caribe Movement is becoming a reference. With support of DOEN and ´samenwerkende fondsen´ they have been able to develop a tool for measuring impact, host gatherings bringing together the communities of several islands and build a stronger community structure that is becoming a reference in the Elos Network.

LEARNING EXCHANGES IN EUROPE
One of the first collaborative project was between Elos Foundation, GSA Madrid (www.gsamadrid.net/)Â and Instituto Elos in organizing the Oasis training in England that was hosted by Lush cosmetics in 2011. With growing interaction between different facilitators and the two Elos organizations, various programs followed from 2014 onwards. Alumni of the GSA-program supported each other in realization of trainings or community projects, such as a the Oasis training Barcelona, a youth exchange in Montenegro, bringing together youth from over 10 countries of Europe, the first Oasis Game in Dortmund (Germany) and various rural area focused exchange program cofacilitated by German, Dutch and Spanish facilitators. One of the highlights was the realization of a youth exchange, bringing youth from villages and rural settings from Spain and Holland together to work on community-building in the Spanish town of Zarzalejo.

When couples with blindfolded eyes appeared on the market square and touched the old church wall? One rarely saw so many young people here, and they were so motivated. What were they up to? Only one week later, almost 100 committed people from Bad Gandersheim would dance with these young people in this very same circle dance? … unthinkable! Or maybe not?”
E-MOTIVE: LEARNING FROM BRASIL E-motive was the first supporter of bringing the Brazilian methodology of the Oasis Game to the Netherlands in 2010, proving that a method that positively impacts Brazilian favelas can work and contribute to social cohesion in Dutch communities. By giving that initial spark, Elos Foundation has been making that belief and idea of reversing the international cooperation paradigm a reality, by growing the amount of local actions in Holland and training a group of professionals in applying the succesful Brazilian methodology. In the spring of that year the E-motive network gave the opportunity to a group of young social entrepreneurs to go to Brazil and to test to see if the work of Instituto Elos in Brazil could be brought to Holland to work on strengthening the social fabric in our highly diverse urban communities. After being trained in Brazil a group of volunteers and professionals mobilized this community of ‘de kleine wereld’ in Amsterdam north. In a place where people seemed to live in separation, the most heard voice was that of curiousity about their neighbours and other cultures. Collectively the community created in this first exchange a mural with flags of all nations present and a community garden. This first test of applying the Brazilian methodology showed that the outcome was more than the physical result, it was also the building of an intercultural bridge build.
E-MPULSE GAME: SOUTH-NORTH TO WORLDWIDE In 2015 Elos Foundation, Instituto Elos Brazil and GSAMadrid developed and executed under this program the E-mpulse game. The E-mpulse Game is an onand offline incubation challenge to support a selected group of social initiators to build partnerships developing their ideas, dreams and projects that will change the world. By taking on 5 challenges on the game platform over the last months, they are supported in building a powerful plan and an irresistible partnership proposal. 35 participants from 12 countries on 4 continents took the opportunity to build cross-border projects, based on the same experience Elos Foundation and Altekio/GSAMadrid had. The E-mpulse game started june 15th and ran until half november 2016 and was closed with a festival in Madrid. In Madrid 18 players from around the world presented 15 interlocal projects that are currently still running or were shortly afterwards put into action. The E-mpulse Game can be viewed and restarted with a group of players via institutoelos.org/games The development of the partnership between Instituto Elos and the Elos Foundation can be seen in a digital story on emotiveproject.org

These gatherings gave impulse to European projects, including the Community-based Entrepreneurship Action-Learning Network. Â A partnership between 6 organizations in 5 countries who, with the support of the European Union, are developing and testing an education program where youth from communities and universities learn together to set up community-based projects with a socio-economic dimension. The program had impact on various levels; - Skills development youth: Through the realization of an actual community projects during the program, youngsters acquired
entrepreneurial skills and
experiences. - Community impact: entrepreneurial projects were co-developed and continued with local communities, giving rise to small income generating projects including food-waste projects and rural tourism. - CEAL Development model: during the 2 year exchange we created a model anyone can download and use interested in approach. ELOS & PROCESS WORK: GO DEEP GAME Go Deep is an award winning, process-based game that brings together groups of people to work in community. Exploring themes that are present on a deeper level, yet affect our daily interaction. Go Deep is a synthesis of 2 existing methodologies: It combines and deepens The Oasis Game and Processwork. Since 2015 and with support from the European Union, GENE, the European Commission and a wide community of supporters, the game has been developed and applied in various communities across Europe. We created exciting, useful and fun ways to help youth workers and people to learn together and to develop the skills they need to engage and transform communities. The game allows a group of participants to explore what’s needed in the given context. Players work with and choose one of the ‘lines’ of the game to explore personal-, group- and community awareness. and make change happen. Go Deep is a game that is played by any group interested in the future of their community. It is a journey, where groups of people travel through imaginary metro lines, playing different cards from the downloadable game . Their experiences and challenges deepen their leadership and facilitation skills and create actions and community transformations that are good for everyone!
GOTODIVERS: GODEEP&GOBEYOND GoToDivers is a project developed for and supported by the European Commission under the Justice Programme & Rights, Equality and Citizenship Program. The priority of the call is diversity in Europe, a core element of Go Deep. As part of projects that took place in 6 cities a campaign was created under the name “Go Deep and Go Beyond. Through video, photo, a 2 day festival and a travelling exhibition we offered an exploration on how to bring more conscious and awareness to our day to day interactions at the community or neighborhood level. Reaching over 100.000 people on- and offline the campaign contemplated polarization in day to day interactions where even when we want to be inclusive and embrace diversity, many unconscious or unintended dynamics will be activated. So how can we work with the dynamic of our inner world and our direct environment? What role does each of us play in this? Residents, institutions, NGOs, activists, politicians, business owners, you and me? How can we go beyond a dynamic of them & us? How do we find the way to move forward together?
