The audience consisted of the students, staff, veterans, alumni veterans, and family of the alumni veterans at Rio Hondo.

The opening of this

ceremony was with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Drill Sergeant Color Guard and the sound of the National Anthem playing in the background. First to speak was superintendent President

Teresa Dreyfuss.

The food pickup is taking a two way split between Rio Source(RHC) and New

Alternatives which is a foster family reunifications charity.

Trish Garcia, an adjunct librarian at Rio Hondo, is also the committee chairperson for the group, which operates in Whittier. When

she noticed the flyer for the opening of the food Bank, she appealed and got approved a donation. It’s a part of a Scouting for Food program which they do every year during the holidays. Garcia

defined the background of the food collection and donation.

“Blatant Honesty: A Trait Needed In A Leader?”

The ability to be able to talk of honesty as something that can be wielded speaks volumes about the extent to which it holds power upon our collective existence.

Being that our leaders are those who we invest a great deal of trust into, a majority of us are in expectation of the hearing the whole truth and nothing but that.

While leaders are made out to be the stability that people look to for direction, it goes without saying that with great opportunity comes great cost.

The age-old principle that “to whom much is given, much is tested,” will stand true in regard to being a leader. To be thrust into a position of power is to exist in a newfound reality where your personal beliefs may no longer be the best means with which to proceed.

As a leader, they no longer garner the same amount of attention and responsibility they once did, but suddenly much more.

Whether leaders be an individual, group, or zeitgeist, it tends to be the case that the utmost discretion is practiced in regards to what information should be divulged, and at what time that information should be divulged.

The societal structure permits this, as to frame such a convenient method of living like our current day civilizations, something shall always provide the foundational basis. Something will always need to be sacrificed for the sole purpose of being built upon. We achieve order at the expense of the truth.

Does anybody really want to know how many more miles it’s estimated that the plane they just boarded is able to be in service for?

What is the death toll because of the latest drone strike that you just ordered?

Would anybody particularly like to see the visual confirmation of the deceased and collateral damage somehow afforded?

While there are some that would undoubtedly seek to learn such things, those participating in the only shot at “peaceful” living (society) we have, there are more who

would rather not know that there still exists a grotesque cost to the beautiful freedoms that they enjoy.

An efficient living arrangement such as our society functions on the basis of trying to establish calculation in the midst of madness.

Life as all of us can agree, at its most honest, is incredibly messy and scary.

There are levels to this, and in the same way, you wouldn’t preach to your children about sex, drugs, and murder, leaders can’t possibly be expected to tell all the grisly details of what is sometimes necessary to preserve the peace of mind.

If a leader were to be blatantly honest, in many regards, they would cease to be just what we elected them to be. They would be no more a leader than any regular person that speaks their mind.

We entrust them with an almost sacred degree objectivity, and it is for that reason that they cannot be blatantly anything no matter how good or bad.

Rather than confuse this with a suppression of freedom, we should observe that it is not until someone is PREVENTED from being able to learn the blatant truth, that there should be an outcry.

Treasure the leaders that practice moderation and ease of self. The ones that optimistically move in silence only looking to listen to their fellow people, while somehow recognizing that human minds are as fickle and flexible as they are fi xed and fearful.

Rio Honors Veterans continued was to specially honor the alumni veterans and introduced distinguished guest speakers Josh Gallegos and Mark Tavera.

Josh Gallegos is a alumni veteran and was part of Rio Hondo’s first class of students in 1966. He is an armed forces veteran and is currently a faculty member in the communications department.

Gallegos spoke a little about his life in high school before joining the armed forces and how most males at the age of 18 felt obligated to join the Vietnam War.

”When you come in we accept, we take that oath and we step forward. Those that went before us turned and looked at us and technically or spiritually passed that baton to us and we took that baton and we did our job.

When our time came and it was over, we turned around a passed it on to those that came after us. Our military is still around guarding and protecting this free country and we shall always be free and may that flag always wave for the sacrifices that are made by the men and

women in the arm forces ” Gallegos said.

Mark Tavera is also an alumni veteran at Rio Hondo.

He and his family have been making Thanksgiving food baskets for veterans about seven years. When his dad passed away they decided to honor him by continuing the tradition.Tavera and his wife raise funds to make these baskets and serve to those veterans in the veteran service center.

“I tell the veterans, this isn’t charity, it’s a thank you for your service,” said Tavera.

Trump Says That He Takes Putin’s Word on Meddling During the 2016 Election

After more votes were tallied on Friday, measure L almost has the two-thirds majority vote needed to pass on the Whittier ballot. The measure would give a $22 million bond to renovate the Whittier Central Library.

Election Day was Tuesday, November 7, but the final vote count has yet to be announced. After Friday, “yes” votes on measure L has reached 66.39 percent, just .27 percentage points away from getting approval, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s Office.

The 36,000 square-foot Whittier Central Library would get an additional 8,000 square-feet if measure L is passed.

With the extra 8,000 feet, the Whittier library would get an all new community room, an expanded children’s section, a computer and technology center, and a parking structure. New wiring would also have to be installed for the new technology added.

If the measure is passed, the city of Whittier would pay the $3 million difference between the bond amount and the expected costs.

The plans for the library will come at a cost for Whittier property owners should it come into fruition. Whittier property owners $24 per 100,000 square-feet of property owned.

This mean a 400,000 square-foot property owner in Whittier would pay an additional $96 in taxes for the next 15 years.

President Trump has defended Russian President Putin claims of denying the allegations of meddling during the last year’s election by calling the questions towards Putin sincerity politically motivated and insulting on Saturday, November 11.

Trump said he takes Putin’s word on not interfering last year from talking to Putin separately in during the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Summit which occurred in Da Nang Vietnam according to CNN. This seems to contradict what the US government’s intelligence agencies are reporting. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper stated in may during a testimony in a report that Russia meddled in the primary election of which the FBI, CIA, and NSA all agree too.

“He said he didn’t meddle. He said he didn’t meddle.

I asked him again. You can only ask so many times. Every time he sees me, he says, ‘I didn’t do that,’ And I believe, I really believe, that when he tells me that, he means it.”

Trump said to reporters on Air Force One. On his way to Hanoi Sunday, Trump was questioned to clarify his previous statements Trump and said: “I believe that he feels that he and Russia did not meddle in the election. As to whether I believe it or not, I am with our agencies, especially as currently constituted with the leadership. Immigration Attorney At Rio Hondo JOHAN ALFARO Staff Writer

Rio Hondo hosted a Dreamer’s Talk with an immigration attorney, Leslie Reyes, who shared an insight about the discussions that her and her colleagues are having about the future of undocumented students and their families.

The First Year Success Center thought it was important to invite an attorney that specializes in immigration because Rio Hondo currently has more than 630 undocumented students and is shown to increase.

Leslies Reyes, Esq. encouraged the attendees to keep fighting but to be careful when protesting. Reyes shared that in Orange County and San Bernardino is where she sees high racial profiling within the court and officers.

She referred to them as red counties because the Police Department detain people who they believe are undocumented over 48 hours, which there are already breaking the law. Then they report an Immigration Violation and let the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) take over.

Ms. Reyes then by explaining the differences between TPS, DACA, AB540, AB2000 and SB68. A dreamer was allegeable to work with a straight social security but had to renew it every two years with a cost of $495. By falling under the Dream Act means those students will receive financial aid but only in 18 states, California being one of them.

Being an AB540 student, lets the government know that they have attended at least 3 years of high school and acquired a diploma. Some were still not covered, so they finally passed SB60. SB60 gave the opportunity to complete the 3 years of education in the U.S, in adult school.

San Francisco Takes A Leap With A City Wide Fiber Optic Network MALENA LOPEZ Staff Writer

San Francisco plans on supplying homes and businesses with a fiber optic internet connection in hopes of boosting the economic growth and job opportunities.

San Francisco has proposed to build their own fiber internet networks and as of now Seattle, Washington is also taking a roll in this act.

The city’s goal is to provide this public service to improve education, energy usage and the growth of industries.

This fiber efforts would be divided into a “dark” and “lit” segment. An outline by Mayor Ed Lee explains how the “dark fiber would consist of basic fiber infrastructure throughout the city, while lit fiber would deliver internet access to residents/customers.” the city would require

a franchise to partner with a private company to build a dark fiber network reaching every home and business. The cost that this amount of work would lead up to is estimated to be about 1.5 billion dollars however there is hope that the public-private partnership will come into play and lower the cost for the private market.

Although this has act has been proposed before, ten years ago, it turned into a failed project. A partnership between Google and Earthlink started for a citywide internet network and failed due to the lack of leadership and plans, such as fiber networking, falling through. However the city has built sufficient expertise and the political drive to move ahead with this act.

They are responsible for animated movies, Star Wars, Marvel Studios, theme parks, and the list goes on and on. It seems like they’re in no shortage of press whatsoever. But for a brief time gap, they banned the LA Times from early screenings. The reasoning behind this is interesting.

In early September, the Times reported on an investigative piece on how Anaheim, the city that Disneyland calls home, essentially allows the happiest place on earth to get away with a lot.

A big factor due to how much money they contribute to the city.

Being able to rent out a parking garage for one dollar a year, and roughly cost 108.2 million dollars in taxpayers money to make even though they generate easily over $35 million in annual revenue just on that parking structure alone.

As well as Disney backing certain people for city council. They had come to certain city council members and gave them huge donations. In hopes to win them over for a favor.

Disney vs LA Times Brandman who voted to approve lucrative incentives for Disneyland Resort. With Moreno fighting with a little to no chance to win this election had won with one of the tightest victories in Anaheim history.

Last Friday there was two editors note in the Times that caught a lot of traffic. It was a list of all major movies coming out with for the holidays, but one movie studio was missing and that was Disney. And the note reads.

The annual Holiday Movie sneaks section published by the Los Angeles Times typically includes features on movies from all major studios, reflecting the diversity of films Hollywood has to offer during the holidays, one of the busiest box-office periods of the year.

This year, Walt Disney Co. studios declined to offer The Times advance screenings, citing what it called unfair coverage of its business ties with Anaheim. The Times will continue to review and cover Disney movies and programs when they are available to the public.”

Disney response to this was how they were covered was unfair.

As well as how they had informed the LA Times on what they were reporting on was false, ignoring the facts.

It even got as bad that four major movie critics groups announced that they had voted to disqualify Disney from their year-end awards considerations unless they again unban the Times.

After all the negative press it

was reported that Disney had fi nally backed down on their stance.

To avoid all possibilities to hurt them in the future. And now it seems like after this whole showdown between the Times and Disney that they are now back on talking terms, and working together once again.

olivia.venegas4091@my.riohondo.edu Child actors from the award win Child actors from the award winning Netflix original show, “Stranger Things” have been in the spotlight recently for more than just their acting. Apparently, some of the public believes the children to be sexy.

Recently, the 14-year-old actor Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler on the show and also stars

in the movie “It,” has been sexualized in some social media posts.

Fans and even celebrities as old as 27 have made sexual comments towards the children.

Model, Ali Michael who is 27, stated via an instagram post, that Wolfhard should “contact her in four years” when he will be 18. When asked about the model’s comments Wolfhard responded with “that was gross.” Wolfhard has publicly addressed how uncomfortable he feels being sexualized and objectified.

“Hey everybody! I don’t wanna ex-communicate anyone from this fandom, but if you are for real you will not harass my friends, or co-workers. Ya’ll know who you are.”

Wolfhard tweeted November 8th.

A video of Wolfhard greeting two adult fans outside his hotel but not stopping to take pictures with them went viral via twitter. The fans in the video verbally harass the 14-year-old actor for not taking pictures with them.

Many other fans responded by

criticizing the two adults for verbally harassing the child actor and stating he is not obligated to stop to take pictures with them.

Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven on the show, has also been sexualized for wearing heels and outfits that show off her legs. The young actress at 13, is being seen as a sexual object and some believe she is asking for it.

According to W Magazine, the 13-year-old actress has been listed as one of the reasons TV is “sexier

than ever.” Gross.

Other actresses that have grown in the Hollywood spotlight are speaking against the sexualization of Brown. From the 1996 movie “Matilda” star Mara Wilson tweeted, “It’s really not that hard to not sexualize children and teens.”

The alleged sexual assault case of Kevin Spacey sexually assaulting a minor caused such an outbreak from the public unable to believe a beloved actor was a pedophile, yet the some of the public is sexualizing the “Stranger Things” children.

Ezra Miller Shares Who He Wants to Play Batman in “Flashpoint” JAIME APARICIO Lifestyles Editor

jaime.aparicio2474@my.riohondo.edu This past July at San Diego Comic-Con saw the reveal of the title for the upcoming Flash film, Flashpoint. The title of the film is taken from the famous comic book storyline in which the character of the Flash inadvertently creates an alternate universe where the origins of well-known heroes and villains are twisted and changed from their original versions.

One origin that is creatively switched in Flashpoint is that of Batman’s where Thomas Wayne, father of Bruce Wayne, becomes the caped crusader instead of his son.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who can be seen playing the character Negan in AMC’s The Walking Dead, played the role of Thomas Wayne in Batman v

Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In an exclusive interview with comicbook.com, Actor Ezra Miller, who first made a cameo as the Flash in Suicide Squad, expressed his thoughts on which version of Batman he would want to make an appearance in Flashpoint.

“I think that the emotional arc of the Thomas Wayne stuff in Flashpoint is one of the illest [parts]. And to see that different manifestation of Batman and his whole different style.

And I love the reality that you have this universe that is so inverted from the one that we know. And this one factor remains the same, but in this flipped way.

Batman is steady, but it’s going to be the result of a different side of the same tragedy with Thomas Wayne instead of Bruce, and that’s dope,” said Miller in regards to Morgan possibly reprising the role of

Thomas Wayne.

But in a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Morgan was asked whether or not he would indeed play the alternate version of Batman in the Flashpoint film, to which he nervously brushed off the question.

Morgan neither confi rmed nor denied the assumption, giving fans plenty to speculate on for the upcoming Flash film.

Morgan is no stranger to portraying characters based off of comic book properties with him taking on past roles in both Watchmen and The Losers and the previously mentioned The Walking Dead. Flashpoint is slated to be released in 2020 with no director yet signed on. We’ll be sure to keep you updated, when more news comes out.

21 Century Fox Sells to Disney

In the last few weeks, 21 century fox has been in talks to sell most of their company, excluding news and sports, to Walt Disney parent company. The decision was made through a strong belief in senior management wants to focus more on their more successful fields in the media.

Disney would be able to buy the movie studio, TV production, inter-

national assets and entertainment networks while Fox keeps Fox News, sports and its Business channel: Disney would also not purchase Fox’s local broadcasting affiliates.

With this purchase, Disney would finally be able to consolidate star wars, and help further along the development of Disney’s media monopoly. Although they have always worked around Fox productions, it’ll be interesting to see what they incorporate into other properties, and what they’ll reject or alter.

As weird as this news sounds, it

makes sense. The Sports and News sides of Fox have alway done well, and are often the most profitable areas of the company. In this day and age, media and content intake are developing and spreading to so many different mediums, a growth that marvel has been able to deal with spectacularly.

With all of this content being absorbed, it’s likely to disney pull all of its content from other sites, such as hulu and netflix, to start it’s own streaming service with the all of the disney and marvel properties

combined.

Who knows what this means on the creative side of Disney, and how much autonomy the people working on the Fox media content will have in the future. Disney, while even making creative moves that seem controversial, have always played it safe. So what has worked so far, either monetarily creatively or both, will be still be green lit. Don’t expect that pg13 Deadpool movie, just expect that it will have a lot more money and will be structured to be slightly more accessible.

A Lot of the superhero movie rights have also been a huge problem since disney bought marvel so we will see a likely change not only on the page, but on the large screen.

WIth Pixar, Marvel, lucasfilms, and fox being purchased, what’s next Sony Pictures, or Lionsgate ? With 13 billion being brought in from the movie box office from the marvel films alone and the general consensus that their doing good creatively, who knows what Disney’s next move is.

Finn Wolf hard of Stranger Things Ask Fans to Stop Harassing His Co-Stars LUIS GUTIERREZ A&E Editor

So it’s not secret that Stranger Things season two is a hit. They had some pretty big expectations to match after that breakout last year.

But it seems like with all that fame brought some unwanted attention to

the young talented cast. Apparently, it’s gotten so bad that one of the stars of the show Finn Wolfhard who also starred in the latest Stephen King film, It, had to come out and say something about it.

The reasoning behind all of this is mainly due to one fan that had sent him over the edge. Making Wolfhard finally speak up about the latest harassment. So basically what had happened was a group of

fans waited for him outside his hotel room and he ignored all of them and walked right into the hotel without acknowledging them.

One of his fans with the Twitter handle “@chandlerborrero” had tweeted out this.

“Imagine being 14 and heartless that you can’t even stop for your fans who made you famous in the first place! WOW. @FinnSkata #FinnWolfhard”

That seemed like the fi nal pushing point for Wolfhard. So he had tweeted from his Twitter “@ FinnSkata” “Hey everybody! I don’t wanna ex-communicate anyone from this fandom, but if you are for real you will not harass my friends, or co-workers. Ya’ll know who you are.”

Then going on to say.

“Why I even have to tweet that, I don’t know. Anyone who calls

themselves a “fan” and actively goes after someone for literally acting and doing their job is ridiculous.

Think b4 ya type boiiii” He had made that last point to throw his co-stars into the mix as well. But from the context of this tweet, everything started because of that video a fan shared where Wolfhard is mainly focused on himself and no on else.

Murder on the Orient Express Movie Review LUIS GUTIERREZ A&E Editor

The Orient Express is certainly different from most movies. Going into it you have to know it’s not a typical block buster movie. Instead it’s very grounded with good acting to back it all up. With that being said let's dive into it.

For starters, the first act starts somewhat slow with kind of pointless things going around. Just for the sole purpose to prove of how much of a great detective our protagonist really is. As well as tons of jumping back and forth of all the characters in the movie, so that way they’ve all been introduced and you can get a somewhat idea of who and what they are.

The main idea of the movie kind of gets thrown into the mix, with Hercule Poirot played by Kenneth Branagh being offered a ticket on the train. After you get past the fi rst ask it’s when things really start to pick up from there.

The movie has a really strong

supporting cast with huge names such as Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Willem Dafoe. With all of them acting their heart out which makes the movie as good as it is. And arguably saves the movie from some of it’s dull moments.

Around the second act of the movie it started to really pick up and getting that murder mystery vibe, which was really enjoyable. The movie really started to feel like I was watching a live play, it was a nice change of pace then what I’m use to.

With Hercule jumping from clue to clue to figure out who was the murder, knowing well that almost everyone had a good motive to kill Ratchett, played by Johnny Depp. Seeing a man that is so certain of himself and his idea of right and wrong struggle was entertaining to play out.

It was around the ending of the movie that really hit home. Once the mystery is solved of who killed Ratchett it brings up an interesting topic.

Because prior to this Hercule would see the world in black and white, there is good and bad no in between.

But once it is uncovered and what

Orient Express made 28,200,000 million this weekend.

Ratchett was murdered it brings up the topic of that middle grey area.

That sometimes people have to do a bad thing for a good cause.

That was the part that really

got to me at the end of the movie.

Even though it may of had some dull moments throughout the movie, the ending was the thing that really spoke out to me and made me really

enjoy it for what it was.

With all that being said I’ll give it a 7/10

Marilyn Manson Pretends to Shoot Crowd at Knotfest Meets Ozzfest in San Bernardino RAMON ALVARADO Editor-in-Chief

ramon.alvarado7328@my.riohondo.edu Marilyn Manson is under fire for pretending to shoot the crowd during his performance at Knotfest Meets Ozzfest in San Bernardino on November 4. Manson has come out to defend his actions, calling it “theater.”

Manson’s theatrics came just

hours after 26 people were announced dead in a Texas church shooting. The city Manson was performing in, San Bernardino, was hit with a mass shooting as well back in December of last year.

While the rock star’s actions might seem out of hand, Manson claims there’s a message behind the madness.

Mass shootings have become a common occurrence in the United States and there’s been many dis-

cussions about guns laws. Manson claims his fake AK-47-toting actions were aimed to raise awareness.

“In an era where mass shootings have become a nearly daily occurrence, this was an act of theater in an attempt to make a statement about how easily accessible semi-automatic weapons are and how seeing them has become normalized,” Manson said in a statement sent to Variety.

Later in the statement, Manson

claimed the fake gun was given approval by the police prior to his performance.

“The prop microphone I used on stage was handed to me with the approval of a police officer,” Manson said. “My empathy goes out to anyone who has been affected by the irresponsible and reprehensible misuse of REAL guns.”

Manson seems to have a strong point about the “misuse of real guns.” Manson’s antics in San Ber-

nardino are minor compared to the real shootings we’ve seen in the U.S. This isn’t the fi rst time Manson has stirred some political controversy. Manson was marked as a reason for the Columbine shootings back in 1999. In an interview with the New York Times earlier this year, Manson said the Columbine shooting was to blame for his fading music career.

California to Become the First State to Legally Recognize Third Gender JAIME APARICIO Lifestyles Editor

In a new legislative bill that was signed October 16, people at Congress passed the first bill to legally recognize third gender citizens who wish to be seen as non-binary in the state of California.

Although the bill has not yet been implemented into law, the new progressive bill will begin to take effect January 2018. Being introduced as The Gender Recognition Bill, the bill will now allow the option of non-binary to be issued on driver’s licenses, ID cards, and that of birth certificates.

With California implementing the new law this coming year, recognition also needs to be given

to Oregon for being the first state to offer a “nonspecified” gender option on IDs June 9, as reported back from The New York Times.

Maria Chaidez, a sophomore major in digital arts who identifies themselves as non-binary says, “This means to me that my identity exists. I’d love to be able to say ‘I’m non-binary’ whenever there could be a question about it. I would love to not have to give an expected explanation.”

Nick Curl, a student studying television writing and production, shows great appreciation for the new bill because of his best friend being non-binary. “My best friend is non-binary, and it makes me happy that their identity is finally being

legally recognized. This shows our state is moving in a more progressive and accepting direction,” says Curl.

Students at the Chapman campus who identify themselves as non-binary also appreciate the new legislation for shinning a bright light on their identities and showing to the general public that citizens of California are not only made up of males and females.

For those not familiar with the new legislation, the bill specifies that “every person deserves full legal recognition and equal treatment under the law.”

This comes as major support for a growing community that has encountered opposition in the past and still is because

of the anomaly it presents to religious practicing folk.

Law School professor Denis Binder, who instructs diversity and social justice, helped expand California’s role in the country as a leader of policy and progressiveness.

Binder wrote in an e-mail to The Panther stating that, “experts say California leads the nation and sets the path on social issues. Very progressive blue states might follow California’s lead on the driver’s license.”

The issue of non-binary citizens being legally recognized by the rest of the public might not be the only obstacle they would have to face, the problem of nonbinary people using specific restrooms might continue.

With the general consensus

still being in a so-called grey area of which restrooms non-binary citizens should use, more and more gender neutral restrooms are being installed to accommodate their needs.

Curl continues to express his appreciation of the matter by saying, “In my experience, people are afraid of what they don’t know and understand, and once they learn about that thing, the fear washes away. I’d encourage people to step out of their comfort zones and learn about people’s experiences other than their own.” With the effect of the bill beginning this coming January, Binder has expressed little to no concern from discussions that have already taken place in regards to the new bill.
