The San Pedro Fish Market is set to close Friday, March 3. Originally founded in 1956 on the streets of San Pedro, the business moved to the waterside location in 1982 to the place we know today. The location that featured cruises, seafood, drinks, and more for decades will be moving its operations. This comes from the current lease of the fish market expiring and new plans to renovate the area being underway.
Closing Up & Moving on to Bluer Seas
The Fish Market on Nagoya Way will sell it’s last shrimp on March 3.
For those who still want to follow the business, they have operations based in Long Beach and Wilmington. A staple in the community since the 1980s, the Fish Market will be looking to continue its storied history by setting up a temporary location in the form of food trucks outside of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum; a couple of hundred feet of the location could seat over 2,000 guests. Workers in the current market speculate that the seating capacity will meeting between managers, employees, and owners would take place Thursday, Feb. 16.
For those wondering what is happening with the location now that the lease is over, multiple billboards were placed around the area promoting a “Waterfront Experience.”
Upon further investigation, this new place, West Harbor LA, will be a mall-/park-hybrid.
Not all customers are on board with this new shipload of change. Jesus C. Montellano, a customer and family man, said, “We have enough malls.” He discussed how the market has been a place for his family to enjoy their time together.
Employees at the fish market are also feeling the consequences of this closure of the location. Catching up with some employees of the market who wished to remain nameless, many talked about how they were kept “out of the loop” when asked about their future employment.
An employee of the market also informed us about their potential payment structure. They said that employees of the San Pedro market who had been earning “$20-$25” would be subject to $15.50, minimum wage rates. Multiple employees noted that a
Montellano mentions his distaste towards the new waterfront West Harbour development that is being constructed on-site. The project will include retail, restaurants, excursions, and even an amphitheater. For many customers like Montellano and his family, the San Pedro Fish Market holds an air of nostalgia and family mementos that could not be replaced by chain restaurants and retail stores. The market has been home to a plethora of significant family memories and a place for those groups to come together and spend quality time for decades.
One loyal customer and his
family spoke about their love and experience with the place, and the importance it holds to them. “It’s a landmark,” Some customers like Carlos Rodriguez are all aboard for new ideas. The new West Harbour project is an exciting prospect to look forward to.
“All progress is good,” said Rodriguez (translated from Spanish). Rodriguez says he looks forward to the new changes and is excited to enjoy the new waterfront development when finished. But Rodriguez will continue to visit the fish market at its temporary pop-up location. During multiple interviews
featuring different employees, many of the same issues were brought up. Amongst some of the employees who would like to remain unnamed, one shared the uncertainty of the whole situation. There was no guarantee that he would keep his position at the new pop-up location or that the pay would remain the same. He shared his concerns about how the closure of the fish market will affect his livelihood. “Some of us have been working here for over 18 years,” said another unnamed employee (translated from Spanish). “And some of us are older already, it will not be easy for us to find another job.”
There were many vital questions left unanswered for many of the workers at the San Pedro Fish market. However, the market closure has not affected all employees in the same way. One worker over at LA Waterfront Cruises said she was “looking forward to the new developments.” She remarked that business had been slow since the pandemic began and hoped the new developments would bring more people in. El Paisano Media reached out to the San Pedro Fish Market for any further comments. As of our publication date, we have yet to receive a response from the market.
The Transfer Fair Brings Community to All This Semester
Krupskaia Molina@krupskaiamolina
Rio Hondo College hosted a transfer fair on Valentine’s Day, bringing different universities and useful information to the hands of students. As graduation day approaches, scholars were handed the opportunity to chat one-onone with the counselors of other schools here on campus.
Representatives visited from universities such as CSULB, UCLA, UCI, and many more, even including out-of-state schools such as Grand Canyon University.
For those who graduate this Spring 2023 semester, await school acceptance letters and look forward to graduating this upcoming May. “Honestly, I am trying to decide between Cal State LA or Cal State Poly Pomona,” says student Val Canizales, who is currently in her last semester here at Rio Hondo.
Canizales is majoring in social work and says she’s very undecided. The transfer fair was a great chance to ask any
Kruspkaia Molina questions about the various campuses to narrow down which options are beneficial or not. There were also students that won’t graduate until the following Spring 2024 semester, but nonetheless, attending the Transfer Fair is essential in exploring the various options for a scholar. Some of the representatives of the schools were natives of Whittier For
example, Cynthia Chavez, born and raised in Whittier, currently attends Cal State Fullerton. Chavez now helps other fellow Whittier students get a better understanding of where to go. The fair is all about community and bringing students together to help one another in their career paths. Those who have surpassed the community college level and
want to guide students in the right direction were present, chatting with the upcoming graduating classes of Rio Hondo College. At the end of the fair, they handed out some delicious complimentary tacos on behalf of the school. Students should be attentive for the next Transfer Fair to get all the information needed on specific schools and possibly eat some great food.
Arts & eNtertAiNmeNt Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Review
“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” just hit theaters this weekend and brought $225 million dollars in revenue to the box office. The third installment of the “Ant-Man” trilogy surpassed both previous films, making this the most successful. Yet, with all of this success, the film still did not do well with audience scores.
It makes it the worst rated out of all the movies Marvel has released despite it being a vital movie to prepare for Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Despite the general audience scores and opinions, movie goer and geeky father of mine, Albert Rodriguez, gave his thoughts, “It was a masterpiece! It was epic! It was visually stunning with great humor. The “Ant-Man” movies never miss, and they just keep getting better.”
Ant-Man and the Wasp find themselves in the Quantum Realm, meeting with new animals and going on a journey that tests their preconceived notions of what is possible.
This movie also introduces Kang the Conqueror, who is supposed to be the new big bad in the film, to set up the new upcoming Avengers film, “Avengers: Secret Wars.”

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood is amazing, with a huge fan base all around the world and huge amounts of merchandise created for fans to collect. Over the years, “Harry Potter” has released video games about the movie franchise. Most of them are not as exciting as the films, with them having their flaws. However, “Harry Potter ‘’ fans finally got a closer look at the Hogwarts that they had wanted to get by being able to explore the castle, to the forbidden forest, to small towns around the area.
Developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros., “Hogwarts Legacy” was released on Feb. 10, which is what “Harry Potter” fans are excited to see since this will be an open-world game.
“Hogwarts Legacy” is a role-playing action game released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and on PC. The story takes place 100 years before the arrival of Harry Potter and his adventure. Players begin by creating their own personalized character and naming the character whatever they want. From there, the adventure starts as players head to Hogwarts and join the wizard academy.
Players will be asked a series of questions as soon as they put on the Sorting Hat. The Sorting Hat will be there to put you into either Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or
Without spoiling the entire movie, there are two post-credits scenes, and in one of them it shows the Kang Dynasty, in which numerous Kang variants are shown. This all leads up to the fifth Avengers movie, “Avengers: The King Dynasty,” due out
in May 2025. The Avengers will battle Kang and his many variants in the multiversal war.
The second post-credit scene shows another of Kang’s alternate variants, when he established the Wisconsin town of Timely, acting as its mayor and turning it into an
industrial hub by teaching its residents about robotics.
On the location of Timely, Kang erected his fortress city of Karnopolis. Timely is also a nod to the company as it was known as Timely Comics before changing it to what we know today as Marvel
Comics. As a result, Loki and Mobius are dressed in periodappropriate disguises in this scene as they watch Victor Timely make this presentation to the audience. Loki exclaims, “It’s him!” Mobius. However, Mobius is not impressed.
Becoming a Wizard: Hogwarts Legacy Review
Hufflepuff. These are the four Houses of Hogwarts. Players can eventually choose what house they want to join, despite the Sorting Hat choosing for the player. Once the players choose what house they want to join, they can no longer switch after.
Learning and exploring is a crucial thing on “Hogwarts Legacy” as players attend classes to learn spells and brew potions, and run around helping students with tasks. A lot of places and locations
fans will recognize will be in the game. For starters, you can head to Hogsmeade and purchase potions, a wand, and some butterbeer. The Forbidden Forest is also on the map where some of the most dangerous creatures live. The most impressive one is the dining hall as it looks exactly what it looks in the films. Tons of rooms and locations will be explored by players as they progress through the game or can set aside the quests and
discover them on their own.
Huge fans will have a hard time putting down the controller as players will have many side quests and main quests to do, such as puzzles and unlocking secret areas around the Hogwarts map.
Combat in this game is everything people can imagine and expect. With spells and curses, players are able to defend themselves in combat from creatures and enemies. The wand combat is smooth
but can get very repetitive. Adding combos on the attacks can make it look better by having a lot of spells on display.
“Hogwarts Legacy” finally did the big open world map its justice in making a game that tons of Harry Potter fans have been wanting. Endless hours of gameplay and exploration awaits players to discover. While multiplayer is missing, there is still a ton of gameplay to do for the single player experience.
Final Home Game Ends in Disappointment
Final Home Game
Ends in Disappointment
Rio Hondo Men’s Basketball ends they’re final home game with another loss against Pasadena City College on Wednesday night with a final score of 81-57.
Coming into Wednesday’s game, the Roadrunners were looking to snatch a win in a frustrating 5-22 season. A win would have ended the season on a high note for the sophomores on this young team.
Period one was a back and forth battle between these two, drawing 17 fouls combined in the first half. Pasadena was the stronger team to start the game, but the Roadrunners didn’t back down and came back to take
the lead heading into halftime. Both teams were inaccurate however, only scoring 6 of 24 3-pointers combined in the first half. Defense was the name of the game in the first half.
The second half collapsed on the Roadrunners as they lost the lead and fell behind quickly.
PCC put on a clinic, scoring 53 points in the second half alone while Rio Hondo only put up 26.
Alwyn Saddler IV showed out in his final home game scoring 22 points and Sharodd Lewis also had a great game, scoring 18 from the bench.
Coach Steve Johnson gave his thoughts about the game…
What did you think of your team’s performance today against Pasadena City? “We were happy with our effort in the first half of the game but
we’re not able to sustain the type of effort it takes to win a tough game like this one. Overall we got better post play in terms of rebounding and finishing shots at the basket.”
First half of the game your team came out strong keeping the game close with the lead, what changed in the second half? “We didn’t have the same energy from the first half which led to us giving up easy baskets.”
What a performance by Alwyn Saddler he had a
great game tonight, scoring 22 pts. Your thoughts on his performance in his final home game. “He did a really good job of finding his shot tonight. He’s capable of those types of performances.”
Final home game of the season for these sophomores and it wasn’t the result they were hoping for, what do you expect from some of these players in the future?
“We hope our sophomores will have an opportunity to
play at the next level. Our freshmen will continue to develop their game.”
“We didn’t have the same energy from the first half which led to us giving up easy baskets,” said Johnson. In the end of the night, the Roadrunners fell to PCC and ended their final home game with a tough loss. However, Rio Hondo closed out their 2023 season with a win against LA Trade Tech in a 87-86 victory.
