One of the cops was shot in the head Nickolas Wilt was the only victim still listed in critical condition. Such a tragic way to start off the week after Easter in Louisville Kentucky. I spoke to RHC student Carlos Salas. He feels like anything with gun control should be harder to come by to buy a gun, look at your criminal records and family history. Gets me worried because of social media and what’s happening rio hondo security should be more tighter at least or anytype of campus checking backpacks and padding down. Make it a requirement if they have scissors, something harmful to make sure the professor for that subject gives a note just to give you the OK to carry around campus.
NBA Season Recap Christopher Aurajo @chris_jrnlsm
The 2022-2023 NBA(National Basketball Association) season has come to an end. With many unexpected twists and turns in trades to witness history made by the king. This has been one of the craziest seasons when it comes to the trade deadline. When the Brooklyn Nets got Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in the summer of 2019, many thought the Nets were going to be a powerhouse with NBA championships on the horizon in Brooklyn. Unfortunately for the Nets, not a single banner was raised at the Barclays Center. This season Durant requested a trade out of Brooklyn as well for Irving. Durant ended up in Phoenix with the Suns. Irving was said to be a Laker but the Nets owner Joseph Tsai sent Irving to the Dallas Mavericks. The Lakers traded Russell Westbrook to the Utah Jazz in a three-way team trade while the Minnesota Timberwolves got Mike Conley, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and three second-round picks. Russell Westbrook was able to stay in Los Angeles as he was bought out of his contract and was able to join the Clippers. The Lakers got D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Malik Beasley. The Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis are the kings of the east with them clinching the first seed. Followed by Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia
76ers. The Cleveland Cavaliers have become a strong unit with guys like Donovan Mitchell, and Darius Garland. The Cavaliers have got the right pieces to be playoff contenders. The Nets without Durant and Irving got sixth and managed to push for the playoffs. Going back to the west the Sacramento Kings made the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. The Kings have been impressive this season and will look to push far into the playoffs. Memphis Grizzlies are on top of the headlines with Ja Morant being suspended eight games for flashing a gun on Instagram live in a nightclub. Ja Morant has apologized for his actions off the court and will continue to help the Grizzlies get their first NBA championship. The Playoffs matchups are set. In the West, the Denver Nuggets will play the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Memphis Grizzlies will play the Los Angeles Lakers. The Sacramento Kings will play against the Golden State Warriors. The Phoenix Suns will play against the Los Angeles Clippers. In the East, the Milwaukee Bucks will play against the Miami Heat. The Boston Celtics will play against the Atlanta Hawks. The Philadelphia 76ers will play against the Brooklyn Nets. The Cleveland Cavaliers will play against the New York Knicks.
Breaking Free Club hosted a workshop about Unhealthy vs Healthy “Red Flags” on Tuesday 4/11, In the Student Lunge. The workshop consisted of learning the importance of boundaries within the relationship and when to know the signs of an abusive relationship. The workshop noted that relationships exist on a spectrum and included examples as well as scenarios of what healthy, unhealthy, and abusive relationships. With these examples, Glenn Heap from the Student Health and Psychological Services lead the group and spoke about the difference in tone and how you approach problems that may arise in the relationships. Those who attended, myself included were encouraged to read aloud each example given from the list of healthy, unhealthy, and abusive and give their thoughts and opinions. The members of the club helped the atmosphere feel safe enough to do so and many of the attendees spoke out about their trials and tribulations when speaking about past and current relationships. Not only were there talks about romantic relationships but platonic friendships and family relationships as well. One important thing to note was that with dating in this day and age, a new problem of digital abuse can arise. Heap talked about this subject and how
and demands of replies can be considered unhealthy and if not checked, abusive. Another scenario of this was the trust between partners and how looking through your partner’s phone without them knowing is not healthy. There is a level of trust that must be established between those in a relationship and how to properly go about any suspicions or concerns that may arise. An acronym that Heap brought up was “HALT”, to help regulate when to talk or discuss things. Never engage in something that may arise in the conflict if you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired, as this can cloud judgment and make matters worse. Alongside these helpful acronym comes along the 24-48-72 hour rule where space and time are given for one of the parties involved in the relations to really stop and think about the problem and help provide a solution. The most important things learned from this workshop were being able to set boundaries, how to effectively communicate, as well as knowing the signs of toxic behaviors before it is too late. The club has many more to offer including upcoming workshops that included things like practicing self-affirmations, writing individual break-free letters, and how to live a balances and healthy guilt-free life all thanks to founder Lesly Tavira.

Is Buying a Used Car Better Than a New Car Robert Jimenez @jimenez__robert
When shopping for cars the biggest decision is whether to buy a new or used car. New cars usually have up to date technology and less issues. If there are issues they usually do get covered by Factory warranties. Used vehicles are often cheaper than new cars. Though they typically come with some wear and tear or higher mileage. But, it can be smarter for people with a budget. When deciding between the two it’s best to always weigh your pros and cons. Buys love the idea of new cars because of the safety technology and the latest softwares in the car industry. Some of the biggest advantages are the following: new cars have the newest features, new cars are way more advanced when it comes to the driving capabilities and the possibilities. For example, new cars have awareness capabilities. They detect other cars, pedestrians, and objects around your car to help avoid collisions. They also come with voice commands such as calling, voice to text, and navigation. New cars still come with factory warranties that cover bumper to bumper meaning all or most of the repair cost will be covered. Also most dealerships also roadside assistance in case of emergency with your new car. Though many advantages they still do come with downsides such as mechanical or high prices. In most cases new cars will leave you paying more in the taxes during the
purchase. Especially with dealer markups being up to almost ten thousand dollars. Buying a used car can possibly be the best financial decision you can make. Even if you are looking for a sports car, luxury car or something in the middle. The best thing is if you have your heart set on a specific model you can get that model for possibly a cheaper price than what they were sold for at one point. Buying a used car can save your thousands of dollars especially since all or most of the depreciation has already happened. Though it’s possibly the best option there’s downsides just as there is for new cars. Most of the features are outdated If you’re looking for safety features, physical features such as sunroofs, or advanced stereo systems. Losers cars usually don’t have those features unless you buy a modified version or something equal. You’ll pay more in maintenance costs Though you saved money on the purchase of the car. You’ll spend more on the services to keep the car in good shapeZ because the car is older and the parts of the car are more worn and prone to damage. Needing to change those parts will cost more due to the parts being less available or harder to change out. So the question is, is it better to buy new or used cars? At the end the decision comes down to the situation you are in, your priorities, and your budget.

Don’t Want to Cook? Here’s Some Healthy Options Pedro Galvez @pdr.glvz
With the overpopulation of big chain restaurants with so many choices, one look at most restaurant menus and it’s noticeable that there aren’t too many healthier options. While salads are offered at Wendy’s, McDonalds and other establishments, their target selling point are burgers, fries and other greasy foods. With these restaurants dominating the overall real-estate for any market, making a big portion of the fast food market known for greasy foods, it can be a bit tough to find a healthy option. There are some establishments that specialize in healthy and flavorful options. There are big chains that have customizable options that can benefit the consumer, Subway being the most popular and easily accessible is a great option for almost anyone. From start to finish the consumer gets to pick their own bread, meat or patty and vegetables culminating in their own perfect sandwich. It could be healthy or it could be more
meat based with not so many vegetables, the sheer options and possible combinations makes this the most flexible and most accessible healthy option. But of course Subway after a while can get repetitive, and while there are many pro’s including the fact that sandwiches can be toasted, still limits the customer to a mostly cold meal. A warmer meal would indicate something grilled or cooked, WabaGrill has that smell even before you enter the door. While not as big a chain as Subway, WabaGrill can not be counted out as anything but a delicious and healthy option for anyone looking for a warm option that can also pack a good protein punch. With a menu option mainly based with rice, veggies, chicken and beef, a small bowl is the perfect portion size for anyone to take in and maybe some left over, resulting in an overall delicious and stomach filling meal. Options are a bit more limited in the
sense that there isn’t a broad choice in your face like in Subway, but that doesn’t hold anything back from the overall quality and taste you will get. But now, there seems to be a bit of a clash, either not accessible to the customer for not being a big chain and not an excessive amount of options, could there be a middle ground? Chipotle is both broadly known and accessible but also gives the client full control and view of what they want and what is to come ahead. The best of both worlds into one, an avid Chipotle consumer is always telling on “hacks” or recommendations that are a must because the combination of things that can be ordered is so broad. Salads, burritos, tacos, and lifestyle bowls are all covered with greens and beans, topped with guac leaves, everyone coming back for more which is why this lands as the overall best recommendation as a healthy and flavorful for anyone to enjoy.

Take Over Long Beach in Thrilling Race Matthew Medina @themedinamedia
The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is only 100 minutes, but it seems to always deliver great racing for the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship. This past weekend the IMSA Sports Cars took the streets of Long Beach for round three of the season as Nick Tandy, Mathieu Jaminet, and Porsche Penske Motorsport scored their first GTP win in the series. As for the other classes, Jack Hawksworth and Ben Barnicoat take first place in the GTD Pro class in the Lexus RC F GT3 car. In the GTD class, Bryan Sellers and Madison Snow win in the BMW M4 GT3. The GTP class always puts on a great show, and Saturday was no different. Ricky Taylor and Mathieu Jaminet had an epic battle for the lead late in the race, going back and forth for almost 20 minutes. Later with nine minutes to go, Taylor made a huge move at turn eight to take the overall lead. Jaminet took the lead right back on Shoreline Drive and set up an amazing battle to the finish with two minutes to go. With two laps to go, Taylor had a massive run heading into turn one to take the lead, but he went in too hard and crashed into the tires. Jaminet cruised to the finish line and won. What a crazy finish to an all-time battle in the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. The two other classes on the track were dominated from start to finish and there wasn’t as much action as the GTP cars. Hawksworth and Barnicoat never had to worry about other competitors chasing them. As for Sellers and Snow, they had a great battle early in the race but other than that, it was smooth sailing for the GTD Pro and GTD class winners. Is IMSA becoming the premier sports car series? IMSA is climbing up to be one of the best racing series on the planet, simply because of the racing it has produced over the last couple of years. This past weekend showed that this series is very competitive, and the competition gets tighter as the season goes on. With major races on the schedule like the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 12 hours of Sebring, IMSA is growing in popularity year after year. Round four of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship will take place at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California on May 14, 2023.

Kirkwood’s First IndyCar Victory Luis Martinez
@luimartineznews
Kyle Kirkwood (#27) of Andretti Autosport won his first career NTT IndyCar Series Grand Prix on Sunday, April 16 in Long Beach, Calif. at the 48th Annual Grand Prix of Long Beach after starting on pole. His teammate Romain Grosjean (#28) battled with Kirkwood throughout the race earning Grosjean a secondplace finish. He was about a second behind Kirkwood. New driver’s championship points leader Marcus Ericsson (#8) of Chip Ganassi Racing was two seconds behind Grosjean and placed third. Former points leader Pato O’Ward (#5) of Arrow McLaren was involved in a controversy during the grand prix. During the race, O’Ward made contact with both Scott Dixon (#9) of Chip Ganassi Racing and Kirkwood. At turn five O’Ward drove into Dixon’s right side. Dixon would later retire from damages caused during this incident. O’Ward would go on to dive into the rear of Kirkwood’s car at turn five resulting in O’Ward spinning out. He would quickly recover but would drop down from sixth to his eventual 17thplace finish. “I’m disappointed in myself, I don’t have to be making those stupid moves,” said O’Ward. O’Ward’s incident
derailed the race of other drivers as his car spun sideways and blocked the majority of the track. “From my point-of-view, it was a low percentage move, and early in a race, a race start he was trying to overtake two or three cars in two corners and you know [it’s a] bad move. He could have taken out me and Kyle [Kirkwood] and Romain [Grosjean],” said Ericsson. Andretti Autosport dominated as well, racing a 1-2 finish, and they had three of the top four finishing cars. Kirkwood won his first professional race since 2021 when he was competing in the IndyLights (Firestone Indy NXT) series. He also placed 10th at the Long Beach track just a season ago. “I mean that’s something (pressure) that was always tough to me... My seasons would always start rough like ‘man we’re at a real deficit here’ and once I got my first win we got some momentum and we would start winning more races and more races and more.” Ericsson leads the driver’s championship in points and holds a 15-point gap lead over rival O’Ward. Alex Palou (#10) of Chip Ganassi Racing gained two positions in the standings and is now in third place after his fifth-place finish today.
