ABOUT THE ROLE COUNTY ATTORNEY Appointed by a 5-member Board of County Commissioners, the County Attorney serves as the County’s main legal representation in lawsuits, employment issues, and land use matters. This position provides legal advisement and support to the County Commissioners, non-board elected officials, County Administrator, administrative departments and appointed advisory boards, committees and commissions regarding civil matters and human services. The County Attorney plays a crucial community role as they head up one of the busiest County Attorney offices in the state.

Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school. Minimum ten (10) years successful governmental or administrative law experience, including minimum of three (3) years successful legal supervision. Thorough knowledge of federal and Colorado state laws, rules, regulations, and procedures regarding county government. Ability to exercise sound and professional judgment in conformance with County policies and procedures and ethical principles including discretion, critical, insightful, and analytical consideration of issues confronting the County Attorney office, County elected, appointed officials, and department heads. Ability to establish effective working relationships with elected officials, department heads, clients, other attorneys, the judiciary, and the public. Ability to communicate effectively. Experience and ability to question, probe, gather information, and evaluate multi-sided issues and legal concerns. Must possess a high level of maturity and a professional approach to issues and problems, must show patience and tolerance when working through the multitude of issues that confront County and confronting County Attorney, within an intense and fast-paced environment. Ability to implement decisions and policies of the Board of County Commissioners to accomplish the objectives of the County’s elected leaders. Current license in good standing as Attorney and Counselor at Law issued by the Colorado Supreme Court or the ability to obtain license prior to employment. Maintain regular and punctual attendance. Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check and drug screen.

IDEAL CANDIDATE The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a highly ethical, trustworthy, approachable, servant leader capable of continue the legacy of a highlyregarded County Attorney who has been appointed as a district court judge this spring. The County is looking for a high-level professional who: • Provides legal advice, researchs/interprets law and applies it to County legal issues, and represents the County in legal matters. • Anticipates and addresses difficult issues with courage, candor, professionalism, and the highest ethical standards. • Anticipates and balances the needs of multiple internal and external stakeholders. • Manages organization ambiguity; operates effectively in rapidly changing or unknown circumstances when needed. • Manages daily complexity of leadership in a large organization with skill, poise and calm.

Salary: $200,000 - $220,000 annually Vacation: 120 Hours per year, accumulated bi-weekly Personal Time: 24 hours, renews each year Holidays: 11 paid holidays each year Sick Leave: 96 hours per year, accumulated bi-weekly Retirement: El Paso County offers a competitive government retirement plan.
