The writer’s team ELSA Malta has ELSA MALTA WRITERS TEAM formed is a great opportunity for

new students to get into the scene of ongoing legal debates and law reviewing. By joining the helper’s team, the student will obtain skills and extra information that are not available in the lecture room, guided by experts in the field.

ELSA MALTA LAW REVIEW

Through ELSA Malta’s Law review students have the opportunity to have their work published. ELSA Malta’s Law review is of high esteem, referenced even in the local legal scene. This gives the student a great opportunity to mature and grow in their writing, through research and guidance.

As of this year ELSA Malta will be ESSAY COMPETITIONS holding various essay competitions

to give the opportunity to students to improve their writing skills without any pressure. This is a good way of trying research methods and implementing habits such as abiding by a word count and OSCOLA, which will surely come in handy when writing assignments and bigger tasks. Not to mention winning cool prizes as a reward for your contribution and effort.

SEMINARS & CONFERENCES ELSA Malta seeks to provide students with a practical side to the legal profession, done through interactive seminars and conferences. During these events qualified and experienced professionals pass on their knowledge about the legal profession. Medicolegal conference Corporate Finance conference Tax Seminar The annual Tax Seminar done in collaboration with Deloitte, aims to prepare second year students for their examinations in this field of law.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES ELSA Malta aims to provide law students with extensive knowledge outside the lecture rooms by hosting various events to clear up any questions or issues the students might have in mind, such as: ‘How to Sessions’- these sessions tackle useful skills for every new student, such as how to write an assignment. ‘Introduction to Notarial Studies’ - Not everyone in the law course wants to be a lawyer, so ELSA Malta caters for everyone’s wishes!

SOCIAL EVENTS SOCIAL EVENTS As a student organisation, we believe that in order to have the best University experience possible, one needs both academic opportunities as well as fun social events. Booze Cruise, Frat, Freshers' Week Water Fight and Freshers' Rave are surely not to be missed!

THE LAW LIVE IN Three years running, ELSA Malta has been organising a law themed live in. During this fun weekend of activities, students attend both academic workshops as well as parties in order to have the best start at University.

ELSA GOES TO... ELSA Malta gives you the chance to travel abroad with your friends, all while making new one's along the trip! That includes sightseeing, meeting locals and experiencing the city's nightlife.

FIRST SEMESTER TIMETABLE

PROJECT JURISPRUDENCE This series of three books is aimed at supplementing the student with their studies, emphasising the focus on numerous cases gathered for easy access to the student. Currently there are 3 books: Project Jurisprudence 1 - “A Criminal Law Handbook for 1st Year Law”, which has been revised and amended in 2020 making it 2nd edition. Project Jurisprudence 2 - “A Property Law Handbook for 2nd Year Law” Project Jurisprudence 3 - “A Commercial Law Handbook for 2nd Year Law” Getting your hands on a copy of these publications will surely give you the edge when studying.

INSTITUTIONAL VISITS

From Vienna, to Stockholm to the most recent visit to Dublin, ELSA Malta seeks to give students the unique opportunity of expanding their horizons from the institutional framework of Malta. In the space of a week, students are taken to different institutions of the chosen city as a different learning experience. However, with day trips and experiencing the night life of the City, the fun is never in short supply.

MOOT COURT COMPETITIONS What is a Moot Court? A moot court is a mock court at which students argue imaginary cases for practice. While the lectures cover the theory side of law, the practical skills are of crucial importance. ELSA Malta holds a number of Moot Court Competitions throughout the year which can be of preparation for the obligatory exams in both 3rd and 5th year. Students will be guided through workshops by professionals through the fictional cases which will be presented in front of real judges, in the chance to win some great prizes and have an amazing experience!

INTERNATIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITIONS Through the ELSA network students have the opportunity to take part in international Moot Court events such as: “European Human Rights Moot Court Competition” - In Collaboration with the Council Of Europe “John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition” Annual “Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court”

ELSA LAW SCHOOLS All ELSA members have the opportunity to attend a Law school through the ELSA network, which are organised all across European Cities. Such Law Schools consist of: InterWorkshops Meeting new people Experiencing a new city ELSA Malta hosts its very own Summer ELSA Law School (SELS) on Maritime law and welcomes many students from all over Europe.

STEP WHAT IS STEP? The ‘Student Trainee Exchange Programme’ is a great opportunity for students to travel, learn and work abroad with law firms, public institutions and international organisations. This is made possible through ELSA’s international status which encourages cooperation between the network countries.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR

LEADING SPONSORS Welcome‌ to the best years of your life. As you are about to embark on this journey, many of you will probably be wondering what awaits you during the coming years as law students at the University of Malta. What awaits is a period of self-formation and development, where you will slowly start to transition to, and eventually become, legal professionals. This year will undoubtedly be made somewhat more challenging due to the ongoing global pandemic and the restrictions it brings with it. The lack of social interactions, particularly during Fresher’s Week, where incoming students get their first taste of uni life, will certainly be a challenge, however this will also open the door to new opportunities and new ways of interacting, which, no doubt, student organisations, will embrace. Apart from the obvious academic studies offered by some of the leading professionals on the island, the University of Malta has so much more to offer in terms of extra-curricular activities which themselves also offer growth and development opportunities in a different environment. As evidenced by the ever-growing number of student organisations, student activism is well and truly alive and kicking on campus. Here at Deloitte we truly believe in the importance of such organisations and what they offer to students. Deloitte has been collaborating with ELSA for the past few years and we are now entering our 7th year as lead sponsors. Throughout these years we have worked together on a number of initiatives aimed at providing various opportunities to students and we look forward to building and improving on these past collaborations throughout the year ahead. Wishing you all the best for what lies ahead and we hope to see you at future events.
