Chair Persons’ Welcome
Oral Program Day 1 - Friday 21 October 2011
Dear Fellow Colleagues, We are excited to announce what we hope will be a thought-provoking conference on the assessment of human risk associated with exposures to mixtures of toxic chemicals. Over the past several decades we have made substantial progress in refining methods for assessing risk for exposures to single chemical agents, yet we cannot ignore the fact that the majority of actual human exposures are to multiple chemicals; whether and how the individual chemical identities within complex and poorly defined chemical mixtures or combined exposures interact remains largely unknown. The subject of mixture toxicity has received growing interest and toxicologists have devoted increasing thought and resources to identifying the most appropriate and scientifically defensible means of assessing such risks. Yet we are only at the doorstep of understanding the underlying chemistry and biology and developing appropriate paradigms for dealing with these combined and interactive risks. The purpose of this international conference is to bring together thought leaders from throughout the world to discuss recent progress in defining mixture toxicology and to leverage an open forum for discussion to launch innovative approaches to better define approaches for assessing human risks associated with exposures to mixtures of toxic chemicals. Although we do not expect to reach a conclusive consensus, the goal of this meeting is to produce a critical cornerstone in advancing our understanding of mixture toxicology. We hope you are able to join in what we hope will be vibrant and paradigm-shifting discussions. See you in October,
