Un triunfo mas Christina Vera en Columbus City School Board What was your motivation for launching a job on the Columbus Board of Education? As a mother of three, alumni and community servant who has worked with youth and families for the past thirteen years, I first hand have seen and experienced the educational disparities in the Columbus school district. My motivation is simple, I believe all students deserve a progressive educational in exceptional facilities that is going to prepare them with the tools foresight and support they need to thrive in and outside of the classroom. The district needs leadership that is willing to go the extra mile, that's willing to listen and meet families and partners where they are at. A child's zip code should not determine what type of educational opportunities they receive. This is what drives me and why I decided to run because I know many kids are getting left behind. What would you like to achieve for our community from the Board of Education? Creating change takes time and the support of the collective. The collective being other board members, families, community members, community partners etc. Facilities are a huge priority area for me. Many of the school buildings do not have air conditioning and or adequate heating. We also have overcrowding issues which I know the district is working on however, these issues have been an ongoing generationally. I also want to fight and advocate for progressive curriculum opportunities like expanding/ implementing financial literacy, home economics, entrepreneurship and trade
programs for all students not just certain schools. You created and run a non profit to help young women and women to empower themselves, do you have any words of motivation or thanks for them? As a young girl I never seen a lot of women in leadership positions, especially Latina women. No one ever came to when I was younger and said you could be a leader, you could be an entrepreneur, you could run for office. My mindset was limited due to not seeing that representation. However, God willing he lead me to Maylin Sambois and gave us the vision to create Femergy® (www.femergy.org) We are helping to change that narrative and create more intentional opportunities for girls and women to see themselves in leadership positions. I believe that no matter where you go in life it's our responsibility to serve others and reach back and help the next girl or women. This election was not only about my desire to support Columbus City Schools, but to show every young girl watching that they too no matter their background has the ability to create change. A funny question What is your favorite dish (Latin food) and why? Arroz con gandules, tostones, and pasteles! I could eat that every day for the rest of my life and be completely happy. The aroma of the seasonings brings so many childhood and family centered moments. No the matter the occasion, food always brings the family together.
¿Cuál fue su motivación para iniciar un trabajo en la Junta de Educación de Columbus? Como madre de tres hijos, ex alumna y servidora comunitaria que ha trabajado con jóvenes y familias durante los últimos trece años, he visto y experimentado de primera mano las disparidades educativas en el distrito escolar de Columbus. Mi motivación es simple, creo que todos los estudiantes merecen una educación progresiva en instalaciones excepcionales que los preparará con las herramientas de previsión y apoyo que necesitan para prosperar dentro y fuera del aula. El distrito necesita un liderazgo que esté dispuesto a hacer un esfuerzo adicional, que esté dispuesto a escuchar y conocer a las familias y socios donde se encuentran. El código postal de un niño no debe determinar qué tipo de oportunidades educativas reciben. Esto es lo que me impulsa y por qué decidí correr porque sé que muchos niños se están quedando atrás. ¿Qué le gustaría lograr para nuestra comunidad de la Junta de Educación? Crear un cambio requiere tiempo y el apoyo del colectivo. El colectivo son otros miembros de la junta, familias, miembros de la comunidad, socios de la comunidad, etc. Las instalaciones son un área de gran prioridad para mí. Muchos de los edificios escolares no tienen aire acondicionado ni calefacción adecuada. También tenemos problemas de hacinamiento en los que sé que el distrito está trabajando, sin embargo, estos problemas han estado en curso generacionalmente. También quiero luchar y defender las oportunidades del plan de estudios progresivo, como la expansión / implementación de la alfabetización financiera, la economía doméstica, el espíritu empresarial y los
programas comerciales para todos los estudiantes, no solo para ciertas escuelas. Creó y dirigió una organización sin fines de lucro para ayudar a las mujeres jóvenes y mujeres a empoderarse, ¿tiene alguna palabra de motivación o agradecimiento para ellas? Cuando era niña, nunca vi a muchas mujeres en puestos de liderazgo, especialmente mujeres latinas. Cuando yo era más joven, nadie se acercó y me dijo que podía ser un líder, que podía ser un emprendedor, que podía postularse para un cargo. Mi mentalidad era limitada debido a que no veía esa representación. Sin embargo, si Dios quiere, me llevó a Maylin Sambois y nos dio la visión de crear Femergy® (www.femergy.org). Estamos ayudando a cambiar esa narrativa y crear más oportunidades intencionales para que las niñas y mujeres se vean a sí mismas en posiciones de liderazgo. Creo que no importa a dónde vayas en la vida, es nuestra responsabilidad servir a los demás y ayudar a la próxima niña o mujeres. Esta elección no solo se trató de mi deseo de apoyar a las escuelas de la ciudad de Columbus, sino de mostrar a todas las jóvenes que miran que ellas también, sin importar su origen, tienen la capacidad de generar cambios. Una pregunta divertida ¿Cuál es tu plato favorito (comida latina ) y por qué? ¡Arroz con gandules, tostones y tartas! Podría comer eso todos los días por el resto de mi vida y ser completamente feliz. El aroma de los condimentos trae tantos momentos centrados en la infancia y la familia. No importa la ocasión, la comida siempre une a la familia.
