The Community Chest mourns the loss of a community stalwart. Our former and current board members, CEOs and staff were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr Herbert Hirsch, our longest serving board member, on 6 June 2019, a mere four months after the passing of his beloved wife, Shirley.

Mr Hirsch served the Community Chest board for over 40 years and was an integral and active member throughout, right up to a few months before his passing. Mr and Mrs Hirsch were regular supporters of our functions and events and only ill health would keep them away.

They were community-centred philanthropists to the core, who lived in service to others and walked their talk. In the 1970s, Mr Hirsch was an active and passionate politician, serving as Leader of the Opposition in the Cape Provincial Council, a businessman, past President of the Cape Chamber of Commerce and joined the Community Chest board.

We thank Mr and Mrs Hirsch for their selfless service to Community Chest and the communities and people of South Africa. We remember them for their kindness, generosity and loyalty to the cause. We thank their family for sharing them with us and extend our deepest sympathies to their sons, Alan and Gary Hirsch, their families and their many friends.

May their dear souls rest in peace.
