Beeing Human Beeing Human is a 3D printed fashion series which acts as a tribute to nature’s wonder. We think wonder is the basis of worship. The more we learn about nature, the more we are uplifted. Details are inspired by the Honeycomb, a structure unique to the creative powers of bees. Bees collect nectar to make a strong, systematic and nurturing honeycomb, similar to how human construct objects for protection, be it clothing or architecture. This fusion of geometric, architectural and biological forms coming together on a human body is to question, if we human are so passionate self-preservation and protection, why can’t we do it for Mother Nature as well? We hope to convey an environmental message through this collection, to encourage people to rethink our relationship with nature and join the dots. Crystals used are generously sponsored by Swarovski.

How Conductive Fibers are Making Your Clothes Smarter

ARTICLE BY

10

Michael Milo

The tech industry is giving a whole new meaning to dressing smart—no collar required. Smart fabric, also referred to as an e-textile, is perhaps the most prominent emerging technology in the fashion world. The fibers used for these fabrics allow for a wide range of electronic devices to be integrated into them, opening the doors to garments that can regulate body temperature, change color, and even apply deodorant when you’re stuck in a sizzling subway car. While they might seem like something out of The Jetsons, electronic garments are not entirely groundbreaking. Since the 1800s, people have been known to wear electroluminescent attire, particularly for formal occasions. However, the 21st century has moved fashion technology to a point where we are no longer simply attaching electronics to the garments; rather, we are embedding electronics in the fabrics themselves, allowing for a much wider range of applications. Fabrics that are able to conduct electricity are of the most interest to researchers, as weaving electrically conductive materials into a garment allows for the textile itself to be used as a sort of motherboard. In turn, a garment can incorporate sensors, which is of great importance in the pursuit of merging fashion and health. Having sensors means clothing can track vital signs, assess sports performance, and monitor the presence of hazardous materials. Beyond day-to-day health, e-textiles have features suitable for military use such as tracking location, analyzing the impact of bullets, and notifying bases when a soldier is shot. To the average citizen, this likely generates thoughts of a dystopian society where one’s every move is supervised, but mainstream clothing manufacturers have little incentive to incorporate these technologies into civilian wear. While all this certainly sounds like we are living in the future, there are some characteristics hindering the technology. For one, smart fabrics need to be washable if they are to survive in the market, which means any electrical components needs to be very well-insulated to avoid damage. Additionally, the fabrics, which frequently combine natural fibers and metallic fibers, need to be comfortable enough for consumers to wear. As an alternative to metallic fibers, materials scientists are developing organic electronics, which boast lower cost and higher flexibility than inorganic electronics. In layman’s terms, this means people will be able to buy smart garments that they actually want to wear on the daily. This, of course, is just one of many methods scientists have considered in efforts to make the clothing more comfortable. Ralph Lauren is among the fashion giants that has taken e-textiles to market. Their PoloTech shirt, priced at just $295, works with your phone to record common exercise metrics such as heart rate, breathing, and steps. Even this technology, though, is relatively low-level compared to the expected potential of smart fabrics. How e-textiles will realistically transform fashion remains a mystery. However, they have the potential to change the lives of people across the globe—all while looking stylish, of course.

Fashion Meets Beauty

As one of the original makeup mavens of social media, Jaclyn Hill has become a force all her own in the $445 billion beauty business. Jaclyn’s love for all things beauty began at an early age. Growing up in Illinois, she was hired by MAC Cosmetics on her 18th birthday. After settling in Tampa, Florida, Jaclyn continued her work for MAC Cosmetics, this time as a product specialist, and soon began to pursue YouTube as a means to share her skills and love for makeup with an even larger audience. She posted her first YouTube video in December 2011 and her bubbly, down-to-earth personality along with her easy-to-follow teaching skills made her an instant hit with viewers. By Fall 2012, Jaclyn was posting highly-viewed videos on a regular basis and had hired an full-time employee, and by April 2013, she was able to make YouTube her full-time career. In May 2014, Jaclyn surpassed the 1-million subscribers mark and showed no signs of slowing down. Her growth since has been on a rapid incline, gaining more than 1 million followers every year. In 2015, Jaclyn collaborated with little-known Australian cosmetics brand Becca to release the now famous Champagne Pop highlighter collection. Sephora, the beauty retailer giant that at one time rejected Jaclyn from a job, sold more than 25,000 units of Champagne Pop within 20 minutes of its release, breaking sales records. Jaclyn was the first YouTube beauty guru with a product in Sephora stores, and Champagne Pop was the biggest product launch the brand had ever seen, averaging 1500 sales a minute for the first 30 minutes. Jaclyn is credited for popularizing Becca, which was bought by Estée Lauder for $200 million in 2017. Proving that she was a true mover of the needle, Jaclyn forged a relationship with Morphe in 2017, launching her popular Jaclyn Hill Palette in June 2017. In its release and first restock, the palette sold out within an hour. Jaclyn and Morphe continue to enjoy their partnership, with Jaclyn launching a new vault collection with the brand in June 2018. With both of the Becca and Morphe collaborations, Jaclyn has done more than $23 million in sales. Unlike many young YouTubers that are a flash in the pan, Jaclyn uniquely seems to only be getting more popular. She’s one of the original YouTubers who has continued to stay relevant for more than half a decade and has stayed at the top of her game with many more promising collaborations and ventures to come. Jaclyn currently resides in Tampa, Florida with her four dogs, Georgie, Frankie, Tipsy and Lolli.

How difficult has it been for you to start and maintain your brand?

What would be the best advice for an ELUCID reader who is wanting to start a

Extremely difficult. There are so many moving parts in doing what I do. 95% of the work is behind scenes! Everyone says “it must be so fun just playing with makeup all the time” and I just smile at them while thinking “if only you knew!” Haha! But I am grateful for the difficulties! I’m learning lessons everyday!

YouTube career? Be yourself, invest in a good camera & a basic ring light! And have confidence! Name 5 “Can’t-live-without” makeup products BECCA CHAMPAGNE POP JACLYN HILL PALETTE MORPHE SETTING SPRAY (use code JACATTACK) HAHA!! KAT VON D SHADE AND LIGHT PALETTE TARTE SHAPE TAPE CONCEALER What are your favorite cosmetic brands of all time? Morphe, Kylie Cosmetics, Cover FX, Colourpop, Jeffree Star Cosmetics

18

Morphe is a company owned by a friend of yours. Can you tell me about Morphe? How did your collaborations with them begin? I met Linda (the owner of Morphe) when I was shopping in the store one night. This is when Morphe was a tiny company! She is one of the most genuine, humble people I’ve ever known & I was so impressed by her kindness when we met! We became friends so quickly & loved working together so much that we just keep coming up with more stuff to do! Most of our ideas come to us when we are driving, stuck in LA traffic, or drinking wine on the couch! Its so much fun to develop makeup with your best friend!

Q &A

How has technology helped you with your career? Any particular strategy?

You have a fun, fresh, youthful style. Who are some of your favorite designers?

How do you feel about the social media atmosphere today? What are the pressures?

If it wasn’t for technology, I wouldn’t have a career! Lets be real! Because of todays technology & social media, I am able to build relationships & connect with my subscribers on a personal level. Therefore I can create products that I know my audience will love! As opposed to several years ago, cosmetic companies would put out products not really knowing what the consumer wanted. Now we are able to have such close relationships with our audience, we know exactly what they want to see next!

Well thank you! Thats a big compliment! When it come to shopping, I am open to everything & all different price points!

Its definitely a lot to handle & not for everyone. You are constantly under a microscope for every single thing you do.

I love Balmain, Monse, Fendi & Gucci (to name a few) but for comfy clothes (my favorite) I love NSF, Cotton Citizen & Monroe.

The silliest things you can think of will start an uproar on social media! Its given people an outlet to express their options on everything, so its not always easy to deal with. But I have been in this industry for a little while so I have gotten pretty good at brushing it off & living my life to the fullest!

Who influences your style? RIHANNA! THE QUEEN!

Graffiti Couture: Fabrican Sprayable Clothes and the Future of Tech-centric Garment Design Smarter

ARTICLE BY

24

Dana Miller

If you grew up hoping to one day become some cosmic fashion-maven mixology of Judy Jetson and Rammellzee, your futuristic wishes have been granted by a British company called Fabrican, which has patented non-woven, instant spray-on fabric and created sculptural, forward-thinking couture out of it—while simultaneously helping make the design world more eco-conscious! Fabrican is affiliated with the London Bioscience Innovation Centre and is the first company to showcase bonded, liquefied fibers that result in textiles capable of being sprayed directly out of a can or spray gun onto nearly any form. While this fascinating new science has garnered attention from market spheres as far-ranging as the industrial world to health care all the way to daily household applicabilities, it is the fashion industry that has pricked its proverbial ears most avidly at the seemingly limitless potential for creative uses of this oil-absorbing breakthrough in textiles. The sprayable garments made by Fabrican, which were created by Dr. Manel Torres of Imperial College after he was inspired by a can of silly string, are essentially Banksy meets Alexander McQueen—a gorgeous nexus of art and avant-garde tech that brings us all a little closer to the Jetsonian dreams of our childhoods. As the Fabrican garments can be made to set soft or hard, the possibilities for designer use are endless, as are the personalization options available to any individual wearer. Fabrican works by cross linking liquefied fibers that adhere instantaneously after exiting a sealed aerosol or spray gun point of application. This method is sterile and sustainable while also containing carrier technology capability that can include perfume, medical components or conductive materials able to dovetail with other elucidative technology. The process of reconstructing and repairing older garments is revolutionized by Fabrican, as is the creation of seamless garments and the typical turnaround time for the creation of newly designed clothes. Wearers can instantly customize any piece in their wardrobes for practicality by adding pockets, or for aesthetics with the immediate addition of ruffles and unique patterns. Fabrican can be used as a 3D sketch tool and aid in any endeavor to draw with fibers. Nascent sunscreen and safety-reflective options abound. You may first have heard reverberations of the impact of Fabrican from a runway show called “Instant Flowers” the company produced for Moscow Design Week 2011. This visual feast provided the world with an early debut of Fabrican technology in the form of what appeared to be models wearing a living, sprayable garden of dresses. The pieces were akin to imagery out of Alice In Wonderland (Saturn rings of floating flared hems and jagged plant-like shoulder adornments) and set the world media abuzz with understandable vigor. With so many innovative and life-altering utilizations native to its design, expect Fabrican to pave the design skyways for generations of wannabe Jetsons to come.

THE NEW WEARABLE S U P P O S E D LY TRACKS FERTILITY I N WO M E N

ARTICLE BY

26

Tabitha Britt

AVA IS THE FIRST WEARABLE TO TRACK FERTILITY IN WOMEN In 2016, Lea von Bidder launched Ava — a sporty-looking silicon wristband that doubles as the world’s first fertility-tracking wearable. Since then, hundreds of women have given the Switzerland-made wearable five-star reviews. Even Kholé Kardashian has been seen flaunting her Ava bracelet online, leaving us to wonder where we can get an Ava band of our own. What exactly does the Ava bracelet do? To Lea von Bidder, Ava isn’t just a bracelet, it’s a step forward for women’s reproductive health. “Ava uses completely unprecedented technology for tracking a woman’s cycle,” von Bidder told Elucid via email. “While the user is sleeping, Ava collects data [via] physiological parameters that are impacted by [the wearer’s] changing levels of the hormones estradiol and progesterone. This data is fed into an algorithm that can detect a user’s fertile window.” Unlike other fertility-tracking methods, Ava provides real-time results based on nine different physiological parameters — including but not limited to the user’s skin temperature, resting pulse rate, perfusion, movement, bioimpedance, and heat loss. Ava also gives users an overall health update with insights on their sleep, stress levels, and heart rate, all of which conveniently syncs with Ava’s mobile app. “Ava can be used to understand mood swings, help determine the best time to get pregnant, figure out if [your] headaches are driven by hormones, and more,” von Bidder continued. “Even if you’re tracking your periods to try to optimize your timing for conception, only about 30 percent of women have fertile windows that fall entirely within the time that clinical guidelines predict,” von Bidder said. “That’s why an accurate, reliable way to detect the full fertile window is such a breakthrough. Ava can cut the time it takes to get pregnant in half.” During pregnancy, Ava owners can switch their bracelet to the pregnancy monitoring setting, which offers additional features such as weight tracking and week-by-week information about their body and their growing baby. The Inspiration Behind Ava Ava was a device conceived via frustration. Before the bracelet’s official launch, von Bidder’s co-founder Peter Stein and his wife were trying to start a family. The only problem? Mrs. Stein was having a hard time finding a fertility-tracking method that worked. “Peter, along with myself and two other co-founders, Pascal Koenig and Philipp Tholen, decided to create a better solution using our collective backgrounds in wearable tech, health sensor tech, medical devices, and consumer packaged goods,” von Bidder said. “Our goal was to create not just a better fertility tracker, but to bring true innovation to the field of fertility and women’s reproductive health, which hasn’t seen any significant breakthroughs since the advent of the birth control pill nearly 70 years ago.” Ava is CE certified and registered with the Federal Drug Administration.

A New Online Shopping Addiction; Thrifting

ARTICLE BY

34

Alessandra Lanno

Remember that black cashmere sweater your mom owned in the 80’s? Did you think you would be wearing that now? Let alone actually love it? Thrifting has become one of the latest trends in the fashion world. While it may have seen as a viable option to afford new retro pieces a few years back, these pieces are now coveted. We have seen how 70’s and 80’s fashion trends of sequined sweaters and woven basket purses crowd our closets. So what is the alternative route to owning a fast fashion retro inspired piece that is overpriced? Buying a hammy-down that is sold for a fraction of what you could of paid at the thrift shop! But what your local thrift shop is out of distance? Or you haven’t found a hidden gem amongst the endless racks? Luckily, you can even thrift online. One of the most popular thrift shops online is ThreadUp. An easily accessible app and website that delivers any vintage piece that catches your eye. It ranges from luxury brands such as Free People and Anthropology to your above average brands such as Madewell and Zara. It allows you to find once loved and/or discontinued high quality pieces at the fraction of the original price. You can even find items that are new with tags. What if you wanted to find more of a popular vintage brand name? Poshmark just might have what you’re looking for. While you can find popular higher quality second hand brands such as Brandy Melville for a cheaper price, you can also find vintage luxury clothing or accessories by popular brands such as Michael Kors, Coach, and Guess. Are you looking for more on trend vintage brands? Poshmark has just the perfect pair of Levi’s that you’ve been looking for. Or the classic retro pair of Addiass you have been on the hunt for. The app also allows one to search for a specific item under your ideal size. Which displays all your options at the click of a button. So when you feel like ditching the time consuming search of finding that perfect oversized band tee at your thrift shop, look no further. You may even find more at the comfort of your own home (and computer).

How did you get your start and who gave it to you? I’m not sure how it all really started. In my mind, I’ve been acting since I was five. My first real movie production was when I was 21 years old, in a romantic comedy called “F*** My Wedding” that was produced and made in Chile. It ended up doing amazing at the box office so I guess that’s how I got my start. I’m very thankful for the role and the opportunity to be seen.

44

The first thing I noticed while looking through your Instagram account is how toned you are. You seem to take fitness seriously. What does your workout and diet regimen look like? I am one of those annoying people who LOVE to work out, and don’t get me wrong it’s a love-hate relationship but, I’m truly addicted to the rush of endorphins and just how awesome it makes me feel mentally. I’m a bit of a lunatic and working out definitely gives me some much-needed relief and peace. I don’t really diet anymore, I’ve gone through so many bad periods in my life of hating my body and shaming myself that for sanity, I now try to listen to my body and really nourish it and feed it what it wants and needs, sometimes it’s pizza and wine, sometimes it’s fish and veggies. I think we live in such a confusing world toward health were there are so many ways to be healthy and no one really knows what actually good. i think it’s SO important to go back to the basics. Our bodies are INCREDIBLE works of genius human nature and were built to constantly change, adapt, and heal itself. It’s epic actually! And I think we forget to honor that awesomeness.

You’re the cover girl for Elucid Magazine, so I have to ask, have you experimented with any fashion/technology products? I mean I was a fan of the Lumee phone case for a bit but ended up finding it too big for the quality of the light. I’m obsessed with all blog apps that keep me up-todate with the fashion world — the cut, who what wear, violet gray, Pinterest, etc. I haven’t really dove into the electronic fashion gadgets I guess.

Q &A How has technology affected your career?

Are there any parallels between modeling and acting?

If you were an animal, what would you be?

Immensely! This little piece of technology in my hands (iPhone) has become my satellite and really my only office and headquarters! I literally organize my entire life through this device. Social media has shifted the way audiences interact with what they are consuming, and it has created a whole new world of marketing possibilities and job opportunities. It’s a weird blurry fine line.... I do love the idea of old Hollywood glam and mystery, but the works have changed and I’m a goofball and kinda love interacting with my followers and fans and family through my social.

I haven’t modeled in a long time but, definitely the work ethic is the same. They are both very hard life styles in which you are never really at one place for a very long time so it’s hard to set roots and feel at home in one place at a time.

Tiger

Who are some of your favorite actors you would like to work with in the future? There are SO many, but to name a few... Claire Danes, Lily Collins (she’s my gf and I think she’s so talented and I’m dying to work with her), Jack Nicholson, Sam Jackson, and Vincent Casale,

If you could get rid of any one state, which would it be and why? Weird question, mmmm…I don’t feel familiar enough with all American states to get rid of any! I know that’s boring but that’s all I got.

What do you think about when you’re alone in your car? Too many things... it varies from existential and philosophical nonsense to “when did I last shave?” to daydreaming about movie sets to “did I feed my dog?”

Do you Netflix? What is your favorite show on the site? I mean... who doesn’t?!?! Currently obsessed with this Italian show called “Gamorrah”.

No period, no pad, no problem. See how the new Period Sex Blanket by THINX makes for an overnight success.

In the 70s, 80s, and 90s, television commercials featured the transformation of maxi pads and tampons, each decade, always promising more protection. “Just when I found the perfect sheets” was one popular quote from a woman in an ad, expressing disappointment with her overnight pad. Well, THINX has used technology to replace worry with security, for, the new Period Sex Blanket has arrived. The period underwear manufacturer, THINX, is retailing their Period Sex Blanket for $369. The company’s trademark technology for their period products, THINX QuadTech®, is a tech fabric made of 4 ultra-thin micro-layers, which absorbs fluids. THINX claims about the blanket mimicking their panties in that it is leak-resistant and absorbent. The Period Sex Blanket comes in an oyster-shell color with a black, velvet inside. Along with its 4-layer tech stitching—moisture-wicking cotton, anti-microbial lining, leak-resistant barrier, and super-absorbent fabric, the blanket is made of 95% cotton, 5% elastane, and breathable Polyurethane Laminate(PUL)--a type of laminated fabric. Many couples put a halt to their entire romantic schedule due to menstruation, viewing it as “nasty,” an “inconvenience,” or a “curse.” The period absorbent underwear company wants couples(and women who sleep alone) to put away the bath and paper towels being used as extra protection over the mattresses(and under the woman) on those problem-plagued days and trust in the Period Sex Blanket. While THINX is innovatively attempting to remove the mark of disgrace from period sex, the blanket has its faults. Chief Business Officer of THINX, Siobhan Lonergan, states “washing it will not be easy.” The blanket has to be rinsed immediately after use, then washed, and lastly, lined dried. However, the Period Sex Blanket has been well received by some. Online blogger, Anna Silman wrote for The Cut, “I did it on the heaviest flow day of my period to ensure that I was testing the THINX technology to its full extent…everything was absorbed. You’re not paranoid about the fact that you’re just ‘leeching’ onto the sheets. There was some blood afterward and it just sucked it right up.” The THINX website playfully details why the Period Sex Blanket would be a good fit for the customer with the phrase, “There should be no shame in the period sex game.” The line that’s probably intended to close the deal is, “All partners deserve to have their needs met, and nobody should feel ashamed or embarrassed for who they are and what they like(including period sex).” According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 62% of women use pads and 42% use tampons. There are many women who have been waiting on an alternative. But, that’s all it is. THINX isn’t promising perfection, nor should the consumer expect it. Feminine hygiene product users shouldn’t deputize THINX’s Period Sex Blanket. It will never replace all overnight menstruation protection. The revolutionary THINX QuadTech® has simply given a blanket the green light on having sex during awkward “periods.”

FUTURE OF FA S H I O N I N C U B ATO R Fashion continues to be at the forefront of innovation and leading thought when it comes to the use of new technologies. The fashion industry itself continues to look towards a more efficient way to interact with consumers across the globe. This drive towards a new found efficiency was the foundation of the collaboration between Microsoft and the students from the London College of Fashion. Microsoft has always been one of the main pillars in the technological world and a leader in advancements that technology could offer. It was only natural that Microsoft would see the possibilities that their technologies could offer the fashion world, so the partnership with fashion students who see their future lined up with the world of fashion made perfect sense. The students who were chosen to participate in this semester long process worked to produce new innovations with the use of Microsoft’s products. The students worked with AI technology, Microsoft Azure which uses machine learning, and IoT (Internet of Things). All of these different technologies played a crucial part in the development of the new innovations created by the students, and each creation honed in on a particular area of the fashion world.

SmartSigns The first group used AI technology and Microsoft Azure to create retail-style signage that engaged with the customer to help find offerings that matched the customers particular style. The AI technology was used in the scanning of the shoppers, and Microsoft Azure was used to collect information from the shopper and learn from them. This innovation creates a new interactive way to build new looks based on the shoppers individual style. Janet The second group created an app called Janet that acted as a style assistant. This app allows the user to upload their entire wardrobe to the app, and when shopping in particular stores the app would suggest pieces that would compliment their wardrobe. This app worked with the use of AI technology (artificial intelligence) that would curate suggestion based of previous knowledge.

Heroes The third group worked with IoT’s and wearables to create the heroes app, which is a mobile app that focused more on wearable technology instead of the phone itself. Particular pieces of clothes like shoes and their insoles would be wired with technologies that tracked the users overall daily fitness, balance, heart rate, and etc. The IoT’s (internet of things) was used to send information and fitness tracking directly from the wearables to the mobile app. Along with tracking information the app also connected the users with other app users who had similar results, and athletic skills. Didi The fourth group also worked with IoT’s that would be partnered with a RFID thread that would track the natural wear and tear of fabrics in which designers and brands would be able to create products that are more ergonomic for the wearer. The radio frequency would act as a transmitter that said brands and designers would use for choosing the best fabric for creating a product.

Hololux The fifth group created a digital shopping experience that allowed online only retailers to give customers a luxury shopping experience. Online shoppers are typically deprived of luxury presence due to the somewhat arbitrary style of online shopping. This mixed reality shopping experience gives consumers a new take on online shopping. Augmenta The sixth group worked with Microsoft’s HoloLens, which are smart glasses that allow the wearer to interact with holograms in mixed reality. Augmenta was created to aid with retail stores and visual merchandising. Tracking traffic patterns and showing the best option for displays. All of the innovations that have been created by these students utilize a number of technologies that prove beneficial to the future of the fashion world. The technologies used are readily available, and are forces to be reckoned with when speaking on the development of future fashion world ventures.
