It is important that our roads are kept in good condition to ensure the safety of road users, cyclists and pedestrians. Over the past several months, the combination of heavy rain and freezing temperatures has led to several new potholes which I know have caused concern for many of you.
I am pleased that in the Spring Budget the Chancellor announced that the Government will place an extra £200 million towards the Potholes Fund. This takes the total pothole budget for UK local authorities to £700 million in the 2023/24 financial year. The uplift will mean an additional £4.1 million for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
Although it is the responsibility of Cambridgeshire County Council to repair the highways in my constituency, I have always been happy to report problems on behalf of my constituents and follow-up with the authority if any issues remain outstanding.
If you have recently noticed any potholes, you can use the Cambridgeshire County Council Highways Reporting Tool, which you can access here:
https://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/ travel-roads-and-parking/roads-and-pathways/ roadworks-and-faults, or you can write to me at: lucy.frazer.mp@parliament.uk
I will do what I can to assist.
Lucy Frazer is Conservative MP for South East Cambridgeshire and a barrister serving as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport since February 2023.
NEWS FROM ELY NSPCC FUNDRAISING TEAM
The Ely and District NSPCC Fundraising Team held a very successful Jazz Supper in March that raised over £2,500 for the much needed and valued services for children and families in the UK today. The Jazz Group “Phoenix” raised the roof and charmed us in equal parts as they donated their talents for our Charity on this special occasion.
Not only did they donate their time, but due to the generosity and sponsorship of “KingsEly”, we were granted the use of the splendid Monastic Barn and the help of their catering team. What with their splendid chilli and rice and all the deserts created by the NSPCC team of volunteers all were duly fed and returned for more. We would like to thank the hundred people who came to the event and further donated to the raffle of a floral display made by our volunteer, Mary Foister and the hamper of food put together by the team. Our next large event is our, now famous, al fresco “Summer Supper” on July 8th. There are limited numbers so we are taking bookings from now on 07470 507790.
In the meantime we are collecting plants for our sale outside 47 Downham Road, Ely that will run from May 20th. If you have plants to donate or any other enquires please contact us on 0791 2617 135.

18 Day and 30 Day Nutritional Resets
Hi, I'm Angela! You may have met me at Fresh, the Hive, the Poleshed or even Littleport Leisure Centre - where I teach various fitness sessions. As much as I love working out, exercise is just a small part of overall health. The foundation for maintaining long term health lays in the way you fuel your body. What you eat has a direct impact on how you feel, and therefore what you do and how you do it. With the right nutrition (even if you are "allergic" to exercise) you can maintain good health.
This is why I have been so passionate about guiding people through my science-backed nutritional reset programmes for the last 8+ years. Before I started I was exhausted, perimenopausal and out of control with my eating (and moods). Now, I am energised, happy and have a renewed lust for life. At the age of 51, I feel better than I ever have!
So, if you are feeling less than yourself, working out all the time without seeing results, or your moods are out of control, I'd love you to experience the benefits of my nutritional
I'll show you how to combine my all natural, science-backed meal replacements and supplements, with your favourite whole foods to give you a foundation for long term health. No artificial sweeteners, colours or flavourings. Non GMO, gluten free, soy free and

Well, that was a long winter! With woeful tales of a cost of living crisis since the autumn leaving many of us with visions of a festive period reminiscent of Dicken’s ‘A Christmas Carol’, just what we needed after the pandemic, it was a real winter of discontent. However, as orphan Annie is renowned for singing, the sun WILL come out tomorrow and as we greet the start of spring we can see it is true. We’ve managed to avoid recession as we’ve moved into 2023 and I honestly believe we can get through this despite strikes and ongoing political shenanigans.
So, now we can prepare to enjoy our gardens, look forward to relaxing BBQ’s with family & friends and take time to appreciate the wildlife and flowers we nurture from spring into summer. So what can you do to care for your lawns, flower beds, trees & hedgerows to make them healthy and attractive for the rest of the year?
LAWNS - Did you know that grass will grow above 5 degrees? So even from early spring your lawn will be trying to flourish. You can give it a helping hand by cutting on a dry day as the weather begins to warm up. If you missed the false spring around February half term, April could be your first chance, now the temperatures are in double digits and the snow has gone. First mow in one direction and then mow again in another direction to catch all the blades of grass. Never cut more than 1/3 of the length of grass. Rake up clippings and neaten the edges with a lawn edger or strimmer. Aerating your lawn helps the soil to breathe, creating “pockets” for oxygen, water, and nutrients to improve your soil. If your lawn feels springy underfoot it may have a thatch build up, rake out as much moss and dead grass as you can using a spring-tined lawn rake or if you have a large area consider hiring a scarifier. Mow when the grass is dry and avoid mowing in the heat of the day when you’re more likely to stress the grass — and yourself. If you have problems with your mower starting or not running well, give us a call on 0775 383 6499, we are happy to advise & help.
FEED & WEED – Once you’ve done the first cut and cleared out the thatch you can use the opportunity to apply a moss or weed killer if you’d like. Make sure you use the right product, some are ineffective on specific weeds. Always follow the instructions on the packet. You may wish to consider keeping weeds as they provide food for insects and lawns can be turned into wildflower meadows. Alternatively you can dig up dandelions and larger weeds with a hand trowel before they have a chance to develop deep root systems. Now
is a good time to feed the grass with a specific lawn fertiliser. Add a slow-release fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure, a spring lawn or multipurpose feed. A good fertilizer with nitrogen is a quick way to green up your lawn in the spring.
Apply to grass when rain is forecast, so that it gets washed down to the roots and avoids burning the blades of the leaf or water in well if there’s no rain on the way. You can repair bare patches a few days after feeding, scatter the seed at half the rate stated on the packet, then lightly rake in a little sand or topsoil. Firm the grass gently under foot or with the roller on your mower if it has one. Avoid mowing re-sown patches until the grass is at least 2-3 inches tall. Lightly water the seeded area two or three times a day for 5 to 20 days until the seed sprouts, the best time to do this is in the morning. Once the grass reaches 1 to 2 inches tall, water once a day but leave the sprinkler on long enough to wet the roots, which are a couple of inches deep. Regular trimming encourages the roots to spread, which will help to fill gaps and block out weeds. If you need our help with any garden machinery please get in touch. Otherwise we wish you a joyful spring and plenty of relaxing fun in your garden.

ELY WILDSPACE
Ely-on-Sea: echoes of a distant past
In Spring 2022 a population of a rare coastal mosquito, Culiseta litorea, was discovered in flooded grassland at Springhead Lane meadow in Ely. The nearest other populations of this mosquito are on the Essex coast, 90 km away.
The only other inland UK records of it are from Swaffham Bulbeck (in 1840), Wicken Fen (1968) and Stow-cum-Quy (1920 and 1933). Culiseta litorea is not harmful to humans; birds are its main source of blood for maturation of its eggs. In the wider Fenland Basin, there are populations of three other coastal mosquitoes, one of which also occurs in the Ely wetlands.
In the earlier incursion, the sea reached within a few kilometres of Cambridge, Peterborough and Newmarket. Ely and Littleport were on a coastal peninsula. During this coastal phase, extensive saltmarshes covered the lowlands around Ely, where mosquitoes likely thrived.
What might be the significance of these Fenland populations of coastal mosquitoes occurring far from the coast? An extraordinary story is emerging in which the assemblage of four coastal Fenland mosquitoes may have an ancient origin going back as far as 4600 before present (BP).
The Fenland Basin was invaded by the sea c. 4600-3500 BP and again c. 2500-2050 BP.
A network of fossilized silt-filled tidal creeks of these saltmarshes (“roddons”) can be seen in the Fenland landscape today. The main street in Prickwillow is built on a major roddon that was formerly the tidal river Great Ouse. The Fenland landscape contains echoes of ancient times, including mosquitoes!

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update
Since my last article we have learned that not only will there be no elections to the city council this year, in fact, only one parish council is having an election throughout the whole of East Cambridgeshire! So, we shall begin our new quadrennial with 9 councillors out of a possible 15! As a senior city councillor, I will continue to keep putting Ely first.
On Monday 13 March we flew the Commonwealth Flag of Peace from the Market Square; and on Monday 3 April I signed the Armed Forces Covenant in front of the Deputy Lieutenant, members of the Royal British Legion and members of the Veterans Breakfast Club
The Mayoress and I took part in the annual Good Friday Churches Together in Ely Walk of Witness from the parish church to the Market Square and thence to the cathedral for a short service.
I was delighted to promote Dr Charles Moseley’s new book ‘Etheldreda’s World –Princess, Abbess, Saint’.
On Wednesday 12 April As Mayor, I was delighted to welcome HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, to Ely on his visit to Harry Specters Chocolate Factory at St Thomas’ Place. This organisation creates employment for young people with autism.
On Wednesday 5 April The Mayoress and I
We still have Eel Day and HM King Charles III’s Coronation yet to go but after that I will shortly be leaving office as Mayor after 12 amazing months. I want to thank Bridget Hickish for giving me space to write a column here so you can keep up to date with the important things going on in Ely City Council.
The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Ely
Cllr Richard Morgan
36 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com City of Ely Council Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, Cambs CB7 4EG Phone: 01353 661016 Fax: 01353 667057
On Sunday 2 April, with Cllr Rob Pitt, visited the new St John’s Retreat in Abbots Way.
were delighted to meet with the Anglian Potters at their private viewing at Babylon Gallery.
Spring is in the air!
And for Ely, that is the signal that the ever popular, unique Eel Festival is just around the corner. This year is special for two reasons. For the first time since before the pandemic the Food, Drink and Craft Fayre is returning to being a two-day event meaning that for three whole days Ely is celebrating! The invaluable City of Ely Estates team are at the ready to hang the bunting and our shops have been briefed to decorate their windows with all things regal!
Not only are we celebrating Eels but also the Coronation of King Charles III by theming the entire weekend around this historic moment. Even the Eel will have a crown as it parades down Ely High Street!
Ely’s Coronation Eel Day will take place on Saturday 29th April beginning with the Eel Parade which will depart from Cross Green at 10.30am, the parade will wiggle its way down Forehill, via the Riverside before arriving at Jubilee Gardens for 11am to begin the festivities. Once the parade arrives, it’s participants will be greeted by a wonderful range of food and drink sellers, crafters, community groups and more! There is also a full programme of entertainment in our Eel Arena too, right though until 4pm.
Once Saturday’s excitement finishes, it’s time to look to the Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. The incredible range of sights and smells, tastes and experiences await you. The Coronation Food, Drink and Craft Fayre will take place on Palace Green and St Mary’s Green. With over 70 traders offering a huge range of street food, artisan produce and incredible craft, the excitement to see this event return to its traditional two-day nature is truly uplifting.
Our final event to round off the Coronation is the Beacon Lighting which takes place on St Mary’s Green May 6th from 7pm. We are working with St Mary’s Church so we can mark this historical moment.
Thankyou to all our sponsors for supporting these community events. Without them the events, and the support of the City of Ely Council, these memorable occasions would not go ahead.
Our sponsors for 2023 are Urban Fresh Ely, The Cutter Ely, Riverside Bar and Kitchen, Grovemere Property and Lovewell Blake and Warren Access Ely’s Coronation
Eel Day takes place on 29th April 2023 from 11am until 5pm on Jubilee Gardens followed by Ely’s Coronation Food, Drink and Craft Fayre taking place on Palace Green and St Mary’s Green from 10.30am until 5,30pm on April 30th and May 1st 2023.

ELY OPEN GARDENS
4th June 2023
Last June, well over 600 people walked around Ely, visiting gardens, by doing so helping to raise over £5000 for the National Gardens Scheme, which was then passed on to the charities and work that they support. This year’s Open Gardens for the NGS is on Sunday, June the 4th, when we’re inviting you to visit seven in the city, and enjoy looking at the efforts of their gardeners over the past year. Thank you to our Volunteers!
When you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.”
Registered Charity All In Sound runs an inclusive, fun, and friendly group each week called “Sing! Together” for those living with dementia, memory loss and their carers, in Ely. The group started at the beginning of 2018, and has been meeting ever since, including some time on Zoom!
During a session in March, the group were delighted to say a special thank you to the team of Volunteers who enable the sessions to run each week. From making tea, and serving coffee, through to conversations and welcomes, the group couldn’t run without them. Each Volunteer was presented with a special thank you note from the Chair of All In Sound, Kathryn, who thanked the volunteers as she spoke with the whole group before the singing began.
Founder and Director of All In Sound, (another!)
Kathryn says “The volunteers play a vital role in keeping the group running, and I certainly couldn’t do it without them! New singers to the group are always welcome – no singing experience is needed, and each week we smile, laugh and sing! It is lovely to see carers and those living with dementia engaging in activities they can do together, as everyone can sing! People who come to our group report feelings of improved wellbeing, mental health and overall health, which is an amazing benefit to coming to a group such as this.”
The benefits of singing and music for those living with dementia has been greatly highlighted over recent years. “We find the singing lifts our spirits and have made many friends in a similar situation through Sing! Together. It is good to meet up with them each week to sing, chat, laugh and generally have fun.”
To support the work of All In Sound, you can donate by visiting their website, or you can contact Kathryn directly on 01353 662022 or email kathryn@allinsound.co.uk

CRAFT FAIR SUCCESS
Susan Maud and her team of stall holders and volunteers provided a festive event for locals to enjoy at their Craft Fair on Saturday 25th March in St Andrew’s Church Hall Witchford. Over 100 people attended the Easter Craft fair along with 22 children who took part in the Easter egg hunt in the church! Almost £300 was raised for the church but this could not have been achieved without the help of the crafters who worked so hard to produce the lovely items on sale, the fantastic volunteers who provided their time and energy, their cakes and amazing goodwill, the individuals and businesses in the village who have donated so many fabulous bottles, raffle prizes and Easter eggs for the various activities and of course all the lovely people who came along to enjoy the event.
Watch this space for another one later in the year!

THE BISHOP LANEY FOUNDATION
GRANTS FOR LOCAL STUDENTS & APPRENTICES
If you are under 25 years old, live in Soham, Ely or immediate surrounding villages and are entering a form of further education, future career training or an apprenticeship, you may be eligible for a grant from The Bishop Laney Foundation.
The Foundation gives book and equipment grants to students attending university and other forms of further education, as well as giving grants for tools and other requirements for those in apprenticeships. It has been in existence, as a charitable organisation, for nearly 350 years and was founded by Benjamin Laney, Bishop of Ely, with the initial purpose of supporting apprentices. It has six Trustees; three from Ely and three from Soham, who administer the Charity. We are keen to help as many local students as possible and we are constantly striving to spread the word.
A typical book grant is £300 in the first year and £150 in subsequent years at a further or higher education establishment and an apprentice would receive £250 for each year of their term. The employer also receives a grant. Many local people from previous generations have been Bishop Laney Apprentices. For further information on grants and eligibility, please visit our website at www.bishoplaneyscharity.org.uk

KING’S ELY ROWING COMMUNITY CLOCKS UP 620,000 METRES AND £3,000 IN GRUELLING 24-HOUR CHARITY CHALLENGE
ROWERS at King’s Ely had their fitness and stamina tested to a whole new level – all in the name of charity.
Bethany Peryer
The partsponsorship I received from The Bishop Laney Foundation for International Citizen Service, a volunteering programme, meant I could be part of the 10-week lifechanging experience with Voluntary Service Overseas. The support Bishop Laney has given me completely changed my life and has helped my future hugely. Without this sponsorship, I wouldn’t have been able to go, thank you doesn’t represent how grateful I am for this support.
A taxing 24-hour Ergothon was held in school to raise money and awareness for the Tearfund charity’s relief efforts for people impacted by the Turkey-Syria Earthquake, and for King’s Ely Boat Club’s fundraising for a new coxless quad for the girls’ rowing programme. At first, it was thought that a few intrepid students and staff rowers would sign up for the event, but more than 80 pupils, family members, staff members, and friends of King’s Ely ended up participating. As a result, two rowing machines were in constant use in the school’s Old Palace Gymnasium from 5.30pm on Friday, March 24th through to 5.30pm on Saturday, March 25th. The 80 participants covered a whopping 620,000 metres and have, to date, raised £3,045.

ELY GUILD OF WOODTURNERS
All-Day
Demonstration - Joey Richardson
On the 20th May from 10.00am until 4.30pm at Little Thetford Village Hall EGW will be holding an All-Day Demonstration by Joey Richardson. Joey is an English artist known for her delicate wood forms. Born in Lincolnshire she grew up in the heart of Twigmoor Woods on a small farm. Here she began turning and carving reclaimed local timber.
She has an MA in Fine Art (University of Lincoln 2018) and there is often an autobiographical element in her work which has strong links to the history of the place and the origin of material. Joey’s practice investigates the emotional and symbiotic relationship humans have with trees. She often incorporates mixed media, transposing the material to add another layer of conceptual reasoning.
Her sculptures are held in numerous permanent and private collections. Inspiring others, Joey lecturers and demonstrates her techniques globally.
The Ely Guild of Woodturners exists to enable amateurs and professionals to further the cause of woodturning and to preserve this beautiful ancient craft. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at the Village Hall in Little Thetford, starting at 7pm (we offer a beginners’ instruction from 6pm). Meetings usually consist of a demonstration by a visiting expert and we even squeeze in a raffle, chat and a cup of tea!
Anyone is welcome to attend two or three meetings as a guest before committing themselves to membership, which is currently just £40 per annum. The Guild offers a warm reception to anyone who fancies turning up and seeing what woodturning is all about. So do come along and take a peek.

In his opening speech Dan mentioned that “Viva’s vision was first and foremost about being a family rooted in its community. ELY PANTOMIME RAISES MONEY FOR CHARITIES!
Katherine Hickmott & Daniel Bell, the directors of Ely based professional theatre company ‘KD Theatre Productions Ltd’, were delighted to present a cheque for £1,413 to The Mayor of Ely’s Charity.
A total of £2,826 was raised over the course of CINDERELLA which was the company’s 10th pantomime at The Ely Maltings last Christmas. Attended by over 10,000 the pantomime was the highest attended pantomime to date.
Katherine & Daniel said "We are hugely grateful to our incredible audiences who were very generous in their donations for this year’s charity bucket collections. This year we split the proceeds between The Mayor’s Charity and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the latter being a charity which was close to Cllr Mike Rouse’s heart who sadly passed away last year. Mike was a huge supporter of our pantomimes, and we were pleased to have honoured his legacy in this way at an event which was one of his annual highlights."

2023 marks 1350 years since St Etheldreda established a monastery in AD 673 on the site of Ely cathedral. Born around AD. 636, by the Middle Ages Etheldreda had become one of the most revered saints in England and hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flocked to Ely Cathedral in her name. Churches across the UK have been named in her honour.
Who was this remarkable woman: Princess, Abbess and Saint? Etheldreda and her relations left a huge mark on the Ely and on the whole of England with consequences which still apply today.
By birth Etheldreda was a Princess in a time when the England we know was beginning to be forged. In life she was an Abbess in a land where the old gods were still honoured by many when things got tough, (even if they were no longer openly worshipped), and upon her death was revered as a Saint.
Great saints are not pushovers. By any standards, Etheldreda was a remarkable woman in a time of remarkable women. Far from being the wishywashy figure of so much (especially Victorian) stained glass she was – had to be – a tough operator. Etheldreda got her way. She changed the map in the Not-Yet-England of her time (c. 636 AD-679 AD). But what power could a woman of her status wield?
The new book Etheldreda’s World gives a glimpse into the land in which she lived and operated, when almost nothing we take for granted today was in place save birth, copulation and death.
Being an Abbess in those days was the modern equivalent of being CEO of a multi-national business. Women had power then, were expert at statecraft and at forming alliances. Etheldreda combined learning and piety with a strong will and political acumen.
Dr Charles Moseley's lively account puts Etheldreda in context, painting a vivid picture which reveals what it was like to be a nun in those days, how marriage was viewed, and what the countryside which these intrepid people crisscrossed looked like.
Etheldreda’s World, Princess, Abbess, Saint
Published 6 April Merlin Unwin Books, £12.99. Ely author Charles Moseley will be giving talks and signing copies of his book at Toppings, Ely on Tuesday 2nd May 7pm and at Ely Museum on Tuesday 23rd May 7pm. Celebrations and an exhibition to mark St Etheldreda’s anniversary will be held at Ely Cathedral throughout the year.
