Dear Reader
This has been a lovely magazine to put together with so much going on in our great city!
I know lots of you read the magazine and appreciate receiving something that is a hard copy through your letter box, but I had an interesting conversation with a lady who made contact a while ago asking how she could stop receiving the magazine as she doesn't ever find anything of interest in it. Well, I was curious to say the least! So, we had a chat over the phone, and I learned a lot. Inevitably, any magazine like this will be influenced by the interests of the editor but it is my aim to serve as wide a readership as possible and provide info and articles that are interesting and engaging. I work really hard at this. To that end, I would encourage you to get in touch if you feel you are underrepresented. You always have an open invitation to get in touch and tell us about something you are passionate about. Sebastien Scaux did just that and we now have a section of the magazine devoted to sporting activities in Ely. It also helps if you are a good writer of course!
Have a lovely last two months of 2024!
Bridget

ELY CLUB RECEIVES AWARD FOR BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS
The Rich Tea Community, a local group for adults with additional needs that meets in the Countess Free Church in Ely – and its co-founder, Cate Allen – have been presented with the Luke 5 Award for disability inclusion from the Christian charity Through the Roof. (www.throughtheroof.org)
Access to church is not always easy for adults with additional needs. Firstly, many people are dependent on others to bring them to church. Secondly, church services may create barriers to understanding and to feeling a sense of belonging – such as complex and figurative language, very few visuals to help with processing information, and sensory extremes from silence to loud
music... All of these factors can be difficult for a person with additional needs. Friendship, faith and fun for all: Rich Tea Community (RTC) was founded to overcome these barriers and to create accessible church in Ely. RTC gathers once a month on a Sunday, 3.30–5pm, at Countess Free Church for friendship, faith and fun for adults with additional needs.
People can sit and watch or take part in the activities. Sessions include:
• social time, conversation, refreshments, craft, games, drama, music
• sharing Bible passages; prayer and reflection; and (4 times a year) a simple communion meal.
Cate Allen, a newly qualified Baptist Minister and Roofbreaker church disability champion, said: “The need is huge, for reaching people who are often left out of church and society, yet have amazing gifts to offer. I believe a church without disabled people is an incomplete church. We have been running Rich Tea sessions for people in local care homes, as well as providing small-group faithbuilding sessions for current RTC members.”

Review: Witchford Amateur Dramatic Society Youth's production of LEGALLY BLONDE
What an amazing show! It was full of pizzazz, infectious energy and non-stop entertainment with a message. This large cast threw themselves into the production making it one of the most thrilling experiences I have encountered. A lot of work had gone into this event for which all involved must be congratulated.
Despite the theme, that a blonde girl is not always an empty-headed creature but can learn and grow as she overcomes the challenges that meet her, there were still many other moments of heightened entertainment, exhilarating dance routines, meaningful interaction and humour. When Elle Woods (very ably played by Courtney), a vibrant sorority queen, was dumped by her boyfriend, Warner Huntingdon (admirably represented by Joe), she follows him and joins the law school he has entered to win him back. As she grapples with a completely new life involving studying, she flourishes as a prospective lawyer, supported by her new friend Emmett Forest (very well played by Hugo). Their friendship grows and she finally realizes that he is her true love. The path she travelled was festooned with colourful episodes. One of the most outstanding characters she met was Paulette (Dani) a vivacious, hilarious hairdresser who was particularly memorable in the ‘Bend and Snap’ routine as she tried to hit it off with the UPS guy.
Choreography, costumes, lights, and scenery were amazing and filled this production with life. The dance ensembles especially the ‘tragic’ Greek chorus were phenomenal and in this fantastic production there was hardly a moment without us feeling swathed in a kaleidoscope of colour, energy and an infectious rhythm. Even Bruiser, the dog, (Wilson), played his part to perfection. This was an amazing event. Well done to the production team. Long may Wadsy continue! THE ARTS
SOCIETY ELY PROCURES GRANT FOR WONDERFUL ART BASED ACTIVITIES AT HIGHFIELDS ACADEMY
The Arts Society Ely is a member society of The Arts Society.( NADFAS) This is an arts based educational charity with nearly 90,000 members and 338 societies in the U.K., Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
As a society we are able to apply for a small community grant from Head Quarters which we can award to an event, school or organization to help support any activity that is arts based. We approached Highfield Ely Academy school and they were most appreciative of our offer.
They put it towards purchasing materials for the special end of term extravaganza. Two members from the committee went on 2 occasions to see the activities they provided.
Classes presented a ‘Summer Showcase: Asia and its Animals’. The activities were a real variety: making masks, puppets, musical instruments, sensory materials, preparing the set and they had some animal visitors funded by the PTA. Each class came onto the stage and we had readings of information about the animals, saw their puppets, short poems and even a sing along with actions. It was a privilege and a delight to see the pleasure that all this engendered.

PRICKWILLOW BUS SHELTER
This bus shelter is a gift from Ely City Council to the children of Prickwillow who have until recently arrived at school, in inclement weather, cold and soaking wet.
The initiative was brought forward by Sophie Deltour, as chair of Prickwillow Village Council, and shepherded by Cllr Richard Morgan (North Ward City Councillor) through the Ely City Council's Climate & Environment Committee, the CIL Committee, and finally ratified by the Full Council on 29th July 2024.
ELY CITY COUNCIL'S NEWEST COUNCILLOR
I am Satwinder Sandhu and Ely City Council's newest councillor. I was co-opted by the Council in September and filled a vacancy in the West Ward. My husband and I have lived in Ely since early 2023 and we love it here.
My background is in working with children and families as a social worker and I am currently CEO of a UK wide membership charity supporting adoption agencies. I am a firm believer in giving all children an equal start in life and access to the opportunities that will help them thrive. Much of my work has been with communities which is what motivated me to become a Councillor. I hope to be able to contribute my professional skills across the range of responsibilities that Ely City
Council has responsibility for and hope that ultimately this will have a positive impact on how the city serves us as residents.
Ely is a beautiful and special place and with our cathedral, thriving art scene and markets, we have much to be grateful for. However, like many UK cities we do have some growing problems with many vacant shops, not enough support for new retail businesses and infrastructure not keeping up with demand.
We can do more to ensure that the impact of tourism is felt right across the city’s economy in shops, cafes and restaurants and I hope to be able to be part of these improvements that will see Ely thrive and reach its full potential.
From the Mayor's Diary
An old school friend said to me the other day, “I bet you two” - meaning me and the Mayoress“are having a lot of fun during your time in office!” I could not disagree because who, for example, would not have fun at Ely Folk Festival with its super-friendly crowd and music that makes you smile and gets your feet tapping? And who would not have fun, as we did just the other day, attending at the Poets House Hotel, the launch of this year's Ely Pantomime. At Christmas KD Theatre are treating us to Goldilocks and the the Three Bears and if the launch was anything to go by it's going to be a great production with a wonderful cast who gave us a preview of what to expect in December. I don't want to give away any secrets but watch out for a truly lovely Goldilocks, a fabulous Dame, a dreadfully wicked villain (boo!), a very funny clown, three decidedly well-fed bears and lots of porridge! All this and more in a Maltings transformed into a Circus tent - “Oh no it isn't .. .. oh yes it is!”.
Of course, as soon as I got home from the Launch I googled 'Pantomime' and what a fascinating history it has. This is not the place for a lecture but I promise you you won't be disappointed if you do a bit of research. Why, for example, is the Dame always a man dressed as a woman? Why do the good guys enter from the right of the stage and the bad guys from the left? What superstitions are attached to Pantomimes? The answers are all on line .. have a look!
In a way – through the idea of research - that links - to an event we attended recently at Ely Library where the Mayoress and I were able to present certificates to boys and girls who had completed this year's Summer Reading Programme. Over the holidays so many children were involved that we had to have two sessions of presentations and what a treat it was to meet and talk to families who had participated. So many books devoured
by enquiring minds and so many worlds in fact and fiction explored and opened up! It was lovely to be able to give everyone involved – children, parents, librarians, volunteers - a pat on the back and a round of applause. We're very fortunate to have, right in the centre of our city, such a friendly and welcoming Library community – long may it be an important part of who we are and what we're about.
Talking 'children', a few weekends ago we did a fundraising event for NSPCC. I gave a talk about the five years I spent in Africa, half a century ago, and told the audience about some of the wonderful young people I'd taught – throwing in tall tales about snakes and witchcraft and encounters with freedom fighters with rifles. It was fun to do and to reminisce and indeed to hear back from other people about their times working overseas. We raised some money for a very good cause. NSPCC in Ely has a super group of volunteers. Their energy is astonishing and their commitment an example to the rest of us. They gave us an afternoon tea to be remembered and reminded us that 'Every Childhood is Worth Fighting For' as their slogan puts it so well. I think that around the city volunteers do so much in so many ways and are vital to Ely being not just a place where we happen to live but a real community of people who care and are outward looking.
Looking ahead, as Christmas gets closer the Civic Diary begins to fill up and next time I'll write about some more of the events we've been able to be part of and about our 'ambassadorial' role visiting nearby town and villages and joining in things there.

NO WILL, WHO INHERITS?
A recent survey has found that 68% of cohabitees are unaware of the rules of intestacy and what would happen to their estate if they died without a Will.
Without a Will there are strict rules that set out who will inherit. In many cases, and especially where couples are living together without marrying or forming a civil partnership, this could result in a far different distribution from what was envisaged by either party.
32% of people surveyed believed that their partner would automatically inherit their estate. It might surprise you to learn that your partner (if you are not married or in a civil partnership) has no automatic right to inherit from your estate, however long you have been together.
The Intestacy Rules only allow gifts to a spouse or blood relatives, not to a long term partner. To ensure that your partner receives a legacy from you, it is vital to draw up a Will as the law currently does not recognise “common law spouses”.
11% of the people surveyed said that they had given no thought to what would happen to their estate after their death. We would urge everyone, whether living together, married or single to take a few moments to think about who they would want to make a gift to after their death.

Could you host a young person in your spare room?
CONCRETE ROSE COLLECTIVE
Sarah*, 17, was living alone in a three-bedroom house after unexpectedly losing her mum. With the property belonging to the council and the pressures of living alone and studying becoming too much she was desperately in need of a safe, supportive place to call home. Having moved in with hosts in April, Sarah remarkably passed her A-levels and in September, started a university degree.
Sarah* is one of three young people moving to university from our Supported Lodgings scheme, and all our young people are in full-time education or work.
“Ever since I have moved in with my hosts, everything began to get easier. I finally had time to study in peace and work towards my goals” - “Natalie”
This shows the difference a safe, stable home environment can make but, with an everincreasing waiting list, we’re desperately need more hosts.
Could you help?
We’re looking for individuals, couples and families with a spare room, who can support a young person as they transition to independence after leaving care or difficult family circumstances.
What is supported lodgings?
Supported lodgings simply means offering a spare room to a young adult for a set period (usually 3-24 months) to allow them to develop their independent living skills and create the foundations for their future. It’s a chance to really make a difference.
Our Supported Lodgings package offers:
• Training
• Wraparound support
• A weekly payment
• Careful matching of host and young person
It’s not fostering and sits comfortably alongside a full-time job.
How can you help?
Could you:
• Put up a poster at work or in your community?
• Send information around to your colleagues?
• Consider becoming a host?

AN INSPIRATIONAL DESIGN FOR THE ELY LEISURE GATEWAY
The pedestrian underpass that connects Ely to the Leisure Centre has undergone a glorious transformation. Through work with Ely College, artwork has been painted on the walls and entrance. The collaborative project has involved key partners, City of Ely Council, Ely Community College, East Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council.
Kilo, lead artist at Splash & Dash Creations Ltd, facilitated a series of after school workshops with the students, aimed at teaching the skills required and students from year 8 to year 10 were tasked with developing their own original ideas, combining the best elements into a finished design and completing the collaborative painting.
The installation took place over the weekend of 21 and 22 September, starting late morning and continuing into the afternoon each day.
Councillor Will Novick, the council's youth lead, said "It’s wonderful to see the college and local councils working together to create opportunities for young people to influence the city we live, work, and study in. This project has turned an unattractive underpass into a community project which will show the best of Ely for many years to come. I am, with the City of Ely Council, starting to work on more projects which bring young people into the process and create more opportunities for all. Watch this space."
Lis Every, Chair of the Community Safety Partnership added: "This excellent project was initiated by our local young people who wanted to ensure the underpass was a pleasant environment for the community using it. The students from Ely College, with local partners and professional street artists will really transform this area. We would like to hear of more ideas from young people and where possible work together to make them happen."

ELY SPORTS
10is Academy: Ely's Hub for Family Fun, Innovation, and Community Spirit
At 10is Academy, tennis isn't just a sport—it’s a community-driven experience where fun, family, and giving back come first. Known for its strong tennis culture, 10is Academy also stands out for its innovation and commitment to making a positive impact on Ely, both on and off the court.
Family Tennis
Bringing People Together
Imagine a crisp September afternoon where families from across Ely gather for the "Autumn Tennis Harvest" at 10is Academy. Children are rallying with their parents, grandparents if not on court, are cheering on from the sidelines, and everyone enjoys the festive atmosphere with pumpkin-themed snacks. These monthly family events, like the “Autumn Tennis Harvest” or “Wimbledon Fever,” are memory making events. Each event focuses on bringing family together for a day of fun and connection.
For 10is Academy, family tennis isn’t just about improving your serve or forehand—it’s about spending quality time with loved ones in a friendly, relaxed environment. The emphasis is on creating lasting memories through sport, proving that tennis is for everyone, not just the pros.
Supporting Ely One Match at a Time
More than just a tennis club, 10is is deeply rooted in supporting the local community. A standout example of this is their partnership with local businesses. The academy’s uniforms are sourced from local suppliers, and the vibrant new kits,
sponsored by Ely-based business The Stock Shop, reflect this commitment to keeping it local. Every time players step onto the court in these uniforms, they’re not just representing the academy—they’re showcasing the strength of the Ely community. This local-first approach extends far beyond gear. For every new member that joins, 10is Academy donates £1 to charity. Over the past three years, the academy has raised substantial funds for Ely Foodbank, directly impacting families in need. In the coming years, they’ll be turning their charitable focus toward Magpas Air Ambulance, an essential service that provides emergency medical care across the region.
What makes these efforts even more admirable is that 10is Academy’s charitable work is funded entirely from within. No sponsorship or outside funding supports their initiatives. The free tennis lessons they offer to local schools? Those are made possible through the generosity of the coaching staff, who volunteer their time to ensure that tennis remains accessible to all.
Tennis for Everyone Free Coaching for Local Schools
10is Academy believes in building a future where every child has the opportunity to experience tennis. As part of their community outreach, they offer free coaching sessions to local schools, introducing young players to the sport who may not otherwise have the chance. These sessions are more than just tennis lessons—they’re a way for kids to build confidence, learn teamwork, and become part of a larger community.
For many, these sessions are the first step in a lifelong love for the game, and with 10is Academy’s guidance, they’re learning more
than just how to swing a racket. They’re gaining essential life skills and discovering a healthy, active outlet they can carry forward into adulthood.
Focus on Abilities, Not Labels
Inclusivity without fuss
Inclusivity at 10is Academy is simple and straightforward—if you want to improve and have fun you’re welcome. The academy integrates players of all abilities, including those with special educational needs, into mainstream coaching sessions. The emphasis is on what players can do, not on labels or categories. We see abilities, not disabilities. This practical, no-fuss approach ensures that everyone feels included without the need for special attention. It’s about unity through tennis, where the court becomes a place for players of all backgrounds to come together and thrive.
Innovating Tennis in Ely
Since its founding three years ago, 10is Academy has quickly established itself as a trailblazer in the Ely sports scene. From being the first club to offer free SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) weekly lessons and holiday camps to organising regular club competitions modeled after the excitement of Grand Slam events such as Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the academy consistently pushes the boundaries of what a local tennis club can achieve.
10is Academy has also been pioneering professional team coaching in Ely for the last three years, offering tailored training to help players reach their full potential. The results speak for themselves—16 titles across both junior and
adult divisions in just three years, a couple of International players including the number 80 in the world of doubles who played at the last Australian Open.
A Club Built on Community, Fun, and Family
At its heart, 10is Academy is more than just a tennis club. It’s a place where families come together to enjoy the sport, where local businesses are supported, and where giving back is a core value. Through their innovative programs, community events, and unwavering commitment to inclusivity, 10is Academy has transformed tennis into a vehicle for connection and positive change.
So, the next time you think of tennis, don’t just picture a stuffy tennis club — think of a community where everyone is welcome, and fun and family come first. At 10is Academy, tennis is only the beginning of what they serve up to Ely.

ELY CITY HOCKEY CLUB SEASON
Ely City Hockey Club has kicked off their 2024-25 season with some impressive performances across both their men's and women's teams. The season started strong, highlighted by standout wins and a high level of team spirit. The Ladies First Team particularly made waves, following up a draw against St Ives with a commanding 5-1 victory over Cambridge South. The Men’s First Team also started out with an astounding 6-0 win against Wisbech, and then drawing 2-2 against a strong Kettering side.
The Men’s second team got promoted in the previous season, and after a defeat in the first game of the season, scored an impressive 6 goals against Peterborough last weekend with a finishing result of 6-3. Following a difficult season for the Ladies 2s in 23/24, the team have been off to an excellent start with two consecutive wins for the start of the season. Both teams look to continue with their performances and are looking forward to the upcoming season.
A really exciting part of the club is the development of the junior players into the adults league, where many are playing in the Men’s and Ladies Third teams where they are learning such valuable skills from experienced players within the club. We also hosted a successful Club Day in early September, which helped build momentum as players across various age groups came together for pre-season activities.
With this positive start, Ely City Hockey Club is aiming to continue their form and build on the results as the season progresses.

Heidi has shared the stage and recorded with Mark Knopfler, Graham Coxon (Blur), Eddi Reader, Idlewild, Matt Rollings, King Creosote, Kris Drever, Tim O'Brien and Jerry Douglas amongst others. Nominated for Folk singer of the year and Best Traditional Song by BBC Radio 2, Best Live Act by the Scottish Traditional Music Awards and Best Female Vocalist at The Irish Music Awards, 2023 saw Heidi win Composer of The Year at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards. Her singing has been described as "simply vocal heaven" by The Sunday Times and from her time with Cherish The Ladies to her lauded solo career she has produced, quite simply, outstanding music.
For over 30 years Boo Hewerdine has been considered one of the UK’s finest singersongwriters. As lead singer of seminal band The Bible through to his subsequent solo work and long-time collaboration with Eddi Reader (for whom he wrote the Top Ten hit ‘Patience of Angels’) he has become something of a national treasure. He is in demand as a writer, producer and performer with his songs covered by the likes of KD Lang (‘Last Cigarette’), Kris Drever (the contemporary classic ‘Harvest Gypsies’), Chris Difford, Duke Special and Hannah Rarity. Together with Brooks Williams, he is also a patron of Ely Folk Festival.

Once you’ve blown the cobwebs away, head to our café for a warm drink, soup, scone or sweet treat. Throughout winter, the Docky Hut Café and Visitor Centre are open 10-4.30pm everyday except for Christmas Day.
As always, we have themed activities at the Family Discovery Area in the visitor centre and there will be a new winter trail around the boardwalk. The Ely Pantomime Returns with a Spectacular
“Goldilocks and the Three Bears” at The Maltings!
This Christmas season, the Ely Pantomime is set to dazzle audiences once again with its spectacular new production of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Running from 13th December 2024 to 5th January 2025 at The Maltings.
This year KD Theatre Productions invites you to join them for this year’s show which takes a thrilling twist, setting the classic fairy tale in a circus. Daniel Bell, the show’s producer, shared his enthusiasm for the production, "This will be our 12th year producing the professional pantomime in Ely. It's very special to Katherine and me, as The Maltings was our first pantomime venue, and we've built the production from the ground up! Last year, over 11,000 people saw Robin Hood with most shows sold out!"
The cast, a mix of returning favourites and new faces, is set to bring the story to life. Rob Stevens returns as the fabulous Dame Betty Barnum, while also directing the show. Joey Warne takes on the role of Silly Billy Barnum, and Michael Loftus brings villainy to the stage as the evil Ringmaster. In the title role, Hope Thompson stars as Goldilocks, with the Three Bears played by David McNair, Mollie Kate Angus, and Sarah Bluck.
Tickets are already selling fast, so don’t miss your chance to experience this family-friendly festive extravaganza. Book now at www.kdtheatre.co.uk or call 01353 725 026.
Father Christmas on Tour!
Once again this year, the Rotary Club of Ely will be touring the streets of Ely with their usual sleigh and, of course, Father Christmas. The club will be supported by volunteers from a variety of local charities, clubs and businesses. A door-to-door collection will be taken to provide funds to support charities, good causes and national and international disasters and projects.
The sleigh will start its journey at 6 p.m. and travel along the streets, approximately in the order shown, on the routes which will be published towards the end of November and available on the website www.elyrotary.co.uk where an alphabetical list of streets will also be found.
The last street will be reached by around 8pm. Some routes will be changed again slightly this year so do not assume you will be visited on the same day as last year. The routes will also be on the Facebook page of the Rotary Club of Ely, Cambridgeshire.
Through the Tracker link on the website or the Facebook page, you can even see the
exact position of the sleigh on the night. For further details about Rotary, check out their website at www.elyrotary.co.uk or for the Christmas collection, especially if you would like to help, please email:
