CONTENTS

Dear Gentle Readers

(Yes, I have been watching too much Bridgerton!) Welcome to our slimlined magazine for January and February, the first magazine of 2024. Our early copy date for this one usually catches a few people out but the good news is the next magazine comes round very quickly. I hope you are having an enjoyable Christmas and New Year season. Ours was a special one with our newest family member and her Mum and Dad with us for a couple of days. Yes, your editor is a glamorous granny! Well - not very glamorous sat here at my computer with a heated blanket over my knees and an outdoor coat on as the heating goes off at 10pm and I'm still here at 1am proof reading ready for the deadline tomorrow. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm very lucky I have a job that I can fit around all my time consuming hobbies - haha! A friend of mine once referred to them as "Passion Pastimes" I like that. When I look at all the groups in the back of the magazine I marvel at all the passionate people industriously persuing hobbies & interests, volunteering, working and supporting others to make the Ely area such a great place to live. Well done Ely!

HIGHFIELD ACADEMY ELY Living in Ely for 9 years I was amazed to finally discover just what an absolutely marvellous very special school there is tucked away behind the green hedge on Downham Road. Privileged to attend a Christmas production, I was overwhelmed to witness that there is no doubt that this school is focused on their strategy which is “To deliver the best possible outcomes for every learner, whatever their starting point”. Learners, of which there are 120 or so, with a huge range of challenges, physical and mental, were totally consumed in delivering Christmas entertainment to family and friends of the school. To learn and understand more about Highfield Academy Ely, please do take a look at their website highfieldschoolely.co.uk SO WHY AM I SHARING THIS WITH YOU? Highfield Friends & Parents Association, all volunteers, work tirelessly to raise funds to support additional needs where the day to day budgets won’t stretch. This year they have raised £21,000, £11k from donations and £10k from fundraising activities. This has gone towards: the Muddy Boots Farm, complete with chickens, rabbits, goats and safe housing where the learners can get close to the animals; the provision of ipads and specialist software for 20 children to enhance their communication and learning skills; portable hoists so that learners can join in school excursions; just to name a few. The School Head has just set us a target of circa £20,000 to refurbish the Sensory Room and fit it out with all the latest technology. HOW DO THEY DO THIS? HFPA run activities such as Car Boot Sales, Glass Infusion and Wreathmaking evenings, a major Raffle with over 50 prizes at Christmas, participate in Bag 2 School, and approach many businesses in and around Ely including all trades, shops, tea rooms, restaurants, charities, trust funds, clubs and many individuals who generously donate, too many to list individually but on behalf of everyone 10 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

involved in Highfield, but especially the Learners, “Thank you Everyone Most Sincerely for Improving Their Lives”. WE NEED TO DO MORE: WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP? HFPA meet at the school, in person, or on line, in a very relaxed but highly motivated and friendly atmosphere and are looking for more helpers, no fixed commitment, whatever you can accommodate, you can be parents or friends/ connections of the school but it is not essential. Everyone is welcome. We are also looking for a future Chairperson and a Treasurer too as continuity of the HFPA is very important to the school. Please get in touch with Steph who will be happy to chat through how things work and invite you along to a meeting so you can see and hear for yourself, by email on: hfpachair@highfield.cambs.sch.uk Thank you in anticipation, Linda Neate on behalf of HFPA.

The start of this journey is an intensive one-week course to become a PHEM practitioner at the highest level. If you warm to the idea of being a part of our team, please contact eaaa.org.uk - we will send you our regular LIFTOFF magazine with LOTS more news on how EAAA is developing to meet future needs. There are many who feel reassured that, should anything untoward health-wise happen to a loved one or to themselves, a highly trained and capable team is available, 24/7. Thank you for your support! together we really do save lives! Michael White

WHAT HAPPENS TO SOMEONE’S HOME WHEN THEY DIE? What happens to someone's home when they die depends on a number of factors. The first thing to establish is who is going to be responsible for dealing with the property. If there is a Will, the executor should be named in it and they will be the person who deals with the property. When there isn't a Will, there is a strict list of the people who should deal with the estate which should be checked to make sure the right person is acting as the personal representative (PR). The first step the executor/PR should take is to ensure the property is secure. They should remove any valuables or important documents for safekeeping if the property is unoccupied. It is important to check there is still building insurance cover - if damage was caused to the property the beneficiaries could hold the executor personally responsible for the loss. If the property is to be sold, it can remain in the name of the deceased; the executor will sign all of the legal documents in relation to the sale.

An accountancy service that covers everything your business needs For more details contact Paul on

info@cb25accounting.co.uk

It is always best to ask at least 3 estate agents to provide a valuation for the property as valuations and quotes can vary greatly! It is important to find a lawyer who is familiar with the practicalities of selling an estate property and also the emotional effects that selling a family home may bring. speakers and venues as well as publicity; we've illuminated the side of the cathedral with refugee images which involved liaising with cathedral staff and organising the slideshow; a children's art competition, and a very moving concert in St Mary's Church.

ElyRRC is a small local charity that has been helping local refugees for around 8 years. Our activities have included campaigning, welcoming and supporting local refugee families, public events and much more. While we are not currently acting as the primary source of support for any refugee families there's still a lot to do, and our focus in 2024 will be around public awareness and fundraising. What we are looking for: We are looking for people who can help organise at least one or more events - this is ideal if you have a quieter period in the year where you can help out but can't make a regular commitment. No fundraising or event organising experience is necessary as you will be supported by the team but enthusiasm would be great.

We are currently looking at organising a charity film screening - we have more plans in the pipeline but are open to any ideas you might have!

Ely Community Lunches would like to thank the lovely people of Ely for their kind donations to Ely Community Lunches and for volunteering to help us at Christmas. What's in it for you: You'll be working with a small but lovely group of supportive people. You will be indirectly helping vulnerable refugees to integrate into a new country, and you will be getting great transferable experience! If this sounds interesting, please contact us at info@elyrrc.co.uk with a few lines about yourself. To give you an idea, some examples of the sorts of events we've organised before are: a charity quiz and raffle that required publicising the event and contacting local businesses for prizes; a number of public talks that involved contacting 14 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

We rely on the generosity of our local people to support and help us with Community Lunches. ELY WILDSPACE

After a long break, mainly because of the nature of the work that can't be done during the late spring and summer, our enthusiastic band of volunteers reconvened near Springhead Lane to undertake some much-needed conservation activities. This included tackling some hedges that had enjoyed a summer of uninterrupted flourishing, trimming around the various trees and shrubs that volunteers have planted over the years, and replacing tree stakes and tree guards, which are vital to ensure continued healthy growth. The team also enjoyed replanting some small elm trees lifted from Springhead Lane last year that extended our already impressive avenue of elms. EWS provided all of the tools necessary - including electric hedge trimmers - for the hedge and bramble works, and some spare gloves and secateurs, although we are always grateful to those who are able

to bring along their own. Many thanks to the stalwarts who turned out to carry out all of the tasks for the day, fortunately we avoided the rain which began to fall as we were packing up. The next session will be in January or February at the nightingale plots on the Ely Wildspace land, and we would be delighted to welcome past volunteers and anyone who hasn’t joined us before but would like to have a go. If you would like to know more about EWS, or get involved as a volunteer, drop the team a line at lcpre@elywildspace.org. uk, we’ be delighted to hear from you. You can also find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and at www.elywildspace. org.uk. Very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year from the Ely Wildspace team! Richard Braund

Ely NSPCC and District Fundraising Group have had a wonderful year. We raised over £14,000 in 2023. We have held a Jazz and a Summer supper; a Plant stall; held a Street Collection; held Bingo and Quizzes at Riverside Bar and Kitchen and at Le Spice; we offered Children’s games at the Jubilee Jamboree; we held a Coffee Morning; we had a full house at our Wreath making and Christmas Floral arrangement workshops. These fourteen events and donations from our supporters both at The Inner Wheel, The Rotary Club and from individuals in the City, mean we had a record breaking fundraising total for 2023. This is all down the the generosity of the people of Ely and the hard work and commitment of the thirteen members of our amazing team of volunteers. A big thank you to everyone.

AN UNFORGETTABLE HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL! From the first cartwheel over the stage, the production of ‘High School’ by WADS (Witchford Amateur Dramatic Society) at Witchford Village College on Friday 1st December, was a vibrant, energetic and brilliant production that was a sheer joy to watch. It was easy to become fully engrossed as the characters came to life and the plot moved along swiftly and clearly punctuated with a kaleidoscope of continuous, skilfullycrafted choreography and slickly presented tableaux. The main characters, Gabriella (played by Rose) and Troy (Rhys), were excellent. They sang beautifully, their natural voices not strained or over produced as so often happens. Troy, in particular, managed to give an air of ease and 22 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

richness that gave his part and voice a special quality. Grabriella’s voice was also exquisitely polished and pleasant. We witnessed their trials and tribulations as they struggled to pursue a secret desire to sing while they were accepted by their peers more as a science nerd (Gabriella) and a basketball captain (Troy). Their main rivals were: Sharpay (Summer) and Ryan (Phoebe-Marie), who pushed themselves forward and, driven by jealousy, connived to thwart Gabriella and Troy. Likeable characters, Chad (Toby) and Taylor (Antonia), secret cake-maker Zeke (Emily), Martha (Lilly), Kelsi (Courtney) and radio hosts Polly and Holly all added spice to the mix. The argument between drama teacher Miss Darbus (Kate) and Coach Bolton (Zack) over whether the students should attend drama rehearsal or basketball practice was very realistic – all too familiar to this retired music teacher who used to help put on school musicals! The ensembles, under the expert leadership of Dani, were a real treat. It was obvious that a LOT of work had gone into this fantastic production and the ensembles in particular helped make it. The key leaders, Lucy Short, Chair of WADS and producer as well as Directors and Choreographers Charlie-May and Zack are to be congratulated for such an outstanding show, full of such pizzazz and budding showmanship – unforgettable! One that will surely go down in history. Rosemary Westwell

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

with love a reminder that they are there, and they want to give hope to everyone.

(A Women-led, Global, Ecumenical Movement) FRIDAY 1st MARCH 2024, 1.30pm at St Mary’s Church, Ely

The World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers.

On Friday 1st March services will be held nationwide and worldwide, when the Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 146 countries. It begins in Samoa, and travels throughout the world – through Australasia, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas – before finishing in American Samoa some 38 hours later.

This year’s service is written by women from Palestine, calling us to connect with the land where Jesus lived and “bear with one another in love”. Despite living in an area of the world where there is ongoing conflict and the future is uncertain, the women of Palestine are sharing

Come and join in with the local service in Ely, taking place in St Mary’s Church, Ely, starting at 1.30pm. Refreshments will be served after the service. All are welcome to attend – adults and children. For further info email: ElyWDP@hotmail. com or see the website: www.wwdp.org.uk

“I beg you, bear with one another in love”

FACES OF ELY

I’m Richard, an Ely based photographer with a small studio in Littleport. I love providing quality headshots and portraits for professionals and now I’d like to give a little back to the community, and that’s where this project began.

2024 will be the year of my ‘Faces of Ely’ project - a chance to gift a portrait or headshot to those people who give their time to make our community the wonderful place it is. I’m hoping to photograph lots of our community champions and exhibit the results in early 2025. I encounter volunteers all the time in my everyday life. My daughters are both members of Girlguiding, and one of them plays football with the Ely Wildcats. Both of these organisations are run by volunteers. My wife is a Girlguiding leader and also a school governor so I see first hand the time and effort that goes into these roles. It certainly isn’t just the ‘hour a week’ where the activity itself is running.

It made me wonder how I could use my skills to help to recognise the time and effort that volunteers put into making our community the place it is - providing opportunities for children, young people, and adults alike while not expecting anything in return. I’ve also taken the role of club photographer at Ely City Football Club and seen the amount of work from so many volunteers that goes into keeping this valuable community asset running. And this is where Faces of Ely was born. My aim is to gift a printed portrait to those in our community who give up their time to improve the lives of the people of Ely. Regular updates will be posted on the Faces of Ely social media pages throughout the year, and at the end of 2024 I aim to exhibit these portraits and share them with the community. If you, or someone you know, gives their time freely, or goes above and beyond their role, please drop me a message on Faces of Ely Facebook page. Otherwise, drop by and give us a follow and see the uplifting work that the people of Ely do. / faces of Ely

ELY NETBALL CLUB CLUB SCORES BIG FOR CHILDREN IN NEED In a display of sportsmanship and generosity Ely Netball Club recently played host to their annual charity Children in Need tournament. Local teams from Witchford, Stretham, City of Ely as well as two teams from the club itself battled it out on the courts. Donning Pudsey ears, polka dots and tutus, 45 netballers gathered under the floodlights for a fun filled night of mini matches, with Witchford emerging as the undisputed champions.

Combining the entry fees, cake sale and raffle, the club managed to raise a generous £388 for the charity. All in all this was a true testament to the netball community’s commitment to making a positive impact. But the excitement doesn’t end there. Ely Netball Club welcomes both experienced players and those new to the sport. On the 3rd and 10th January the club are encouraging interested players to join their New Player’s night training sessions. The club train on Wednesdays from 7.30pm to 9pm at the King’s school.

The hour-long sessions include some general fitness, balls skills and drills and then some friendly netball match play. All sessions are fun and friendly with a competitive edge! 32 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

The club are keen to welcome new members to join them and will be hosting free “Give it a Go” sessions throughout January to encourage players to either return to the sport or try it for the first time. At the end these sessions you can then choose to join the club at a monthly cost of only £10. Do come along and “Give it a Go” on the 2nd, 9th,16th or 24th January. Saturday 9 March, 7.30 th

St Mary’s Church, Ely The main work of the evening will be Dvořák’s highly attractive Mass in D. Dvořák was commissioned to compose this mass by the Czech architect and patron Josef Hlávka for the inauguration of the chapel that he had built for his summer residence in Lužany. It was first performed in 1887, conducted by the composer. Our performance will be accompanied by a wind quintet in a recently published new arrangement of the original organ accompaniment; even if you have heard this piece recently, this fascinating new accompaniment will reveal the work in a new light. Other pieces in the programme include Sir Charles Villiers Stanford’s much-loved group of three motets: Justorum animae, Coelos ascendit hodie and Beati quorum via, paired with Janet Wheeler’s imaginative Homage to Stanford, based on the final piece of the set.
