Welcome to the Sept/Oct 2024 edition of the Elyi magazine. This is usually a smaller magazine as people are off on holiday (me included) when copy is sent in but amazingly people have been very on the ball!

I've been up at the Edinburgh Fringe with Viva Arts and Community Group performing a very daft version of Sense and Sensibility. Sadly, I wasn't able to catch the King's School production as we didn't overlap but I hear they had a fabulous week too.

Ely has had some amazing events over the summer; The Folk festival had another great weekend and Ely pride rocked the city as usual! Coming up in the Autumn is the famous Ely Apple Fayre and all the associated stalls and activities and the Arts Festival team have extended their vision beyond the summer and are planning a rather special winter event in December. And then of course it will soon be panto season! Oh yes it will!

Lots of love Bridget

NEWLY DEVELOPED SENSORY TRAILS FOR ELY CATHEDRAL

Ely Cathedral’s has launched a series of Sensory Trails as an alternative way of experiencing the building and to ensure everyone who comes into the building feels truly welcome. Each trail has been specifically designed to ensure the Cathedral is accessible to those with additional needs, or simply to support visitors who prefer to experience the Cathedral through their senses, such as young children.

Hilary Young, Learning Officer at Ely Cathedral, has been the main lead on this project - “These new Sensory Trails encourage users to feel the stonework, just as the stonemasons did when they were building this incredible structure, as well as identify colours and shapes that have been created by crafts people throughout the history of Ely Cathedral. We are looking forward to sharing this exciting new provision to enable even more people to engage with Ely Cathedral”.

It is hoped the three new Sensory Trails will offer a different perspective on this high-profile building by bringing it all into focus through touch, colour and shape. Each trail has been uniquely developed to be compatible with communication systems that those with sensory differences may already have in place in their daily life. They are supported by additional resources on the Cathedral website so visitors can prepare themselves for what they will experience before they visit. In addition to the three launched this week, a Sensory Christmas Trail is currently in development so it will be available for use over the Christmas and New Year period.

Philippa Stevens, Director of Learning at Ely Cathedral said “The Learning Department are really excited to be able to share these new trails

with visitors. Not only do they provide an inclusive way for everyone to enjoy the Cathedral, but they give all guests the opportunity to engage with the sounds, textures, sights, smells and atmosphere that make our building so very special”

Earlier this year the Cathedral launched their new multi media guides which provide in depth digital tours of the building in a number of languages as well as BSL and an Audio Descriptive tour. Info and downloads can be found at: www.elycathedral.org/learning-and-families/ sensory-trails

CARING KERRY BRAVES CANCER HEAD SHAVE IN AID OF LOCAL CHARITY

Littleport resident and Homecare Professional, Kerry Giles-Brown has had her head shaved to raise money for local charity, Caring Together, before she starts chemotherapy herself.

Kerry has worked for the Cambridgeshire-based charity for over 30 years and last year held a fundraising tea-party, raising over £1,000 to support the work of the charity.

In recent months Kerry has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but together with her family, she is determined that some good will come of her situation. Kerry is due to begin chemotherapy shortly so has organised to have her head shaved to raise money to help the charity she is so devoted to.

The head shave took place at Kerry’s home in Littleport on Monday 12 August. Kerry’s daughter, Megan, has set up an online fundraising page at https://www.justgiving.com/page/ kerry-giles-brown-1721764082936.

On the day many friends, family and neighbours

came along to support Kerry and enjoy refreshments and a fun raffle – all in aid of the charity.

Kerry explained, “Caring Together Charity is a major part of my life and always will be.

“I want the charity to benefit at this time. Having been part of the team for a long time, I know how important our support is to people who are caring for a family member.

“This is a way for me to do something positive and make sure the day is filled with laughter, smiles and hope.”

Caring Together Charity supports unpaid, family carers across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Norfolk. As a Care Assistant, Kerry is a member of the team providing breaks to unpaid carers by stepping in to look after the person with a disability or long-term illness. The charity provides breaks for unpaid carers so that they can go to a GP or hospital appointment without worrying about the person they look after back at home. Unpaid carers can also have some much-needed time to themselves – or to reconnect with family or friends – knowing the person they look after is in safe hands. Being an unpaid carer can be exhausting, with half of carers having health issues of their own. They can become burnt-out, isolated or even reach crisis point where they feel unable to cope. This is why the charity provides vital breaks for unpaid carers.

Caring Together Charity is currently supporting 126 unpaid carers in Littleport itself, and over 580 across the wider Ely area. Each year the charity helps over 27,000 people.

To find out more about Caring Together Charity visit caringtogether.org, email hello@caringtogether.org or call 0345 241 0954.

The Rotary Young Photographer competition is open to anyone under 18. Local winners go forward to national level. Prizes given. Apply to herewardrotaryely@hotmail.com for an information pack and entry form

CHARLOTTE CANE - AUGUST LETTER TO RESIDENTS

It’s been a very exciting, but also an odd couple of months. Starting a new job is always a little odd, but this new role is very different. I hope to keep everyone I represent informed about what I’m doing, but I also feel the need to introduce myself. So, hello – I’m Charlotte, your Member of Parliament, thank you for electing me. I’ve lived in the Constituency for about 30 years, and brought up two children here. I love the area and the people who live and work here and it's a huge honour to represent you at Westminster.

I worked as an archaeologist for about 10 years before retraining as a Chartered Accountant. My most recent role was the Resources Director for a local wildlife charity. I have been a Parish Councillor in Reach and am a District Councillor for the Bottisham ward.

An MP’s office needs people to staff it, so I’m hiring my team as we speak. As an MP, I am the employer of those staff, as well as their line manager and HR department. They have to get acquainted with centuries-old conventions and go through high-security checks, while their boss is also new to the office and can’t tell them the answers.

I’m writing this during recess (periods when Parliament doesn’t sit), so I’m back home in Reach. Because I don’t have to travel into London until the House of Commons sits again, I can meet people around the constituency. So

far, I have: visited residents with poor quality housing, spoken at a female leadership summer school, talked to the County Council about road conditions, been to a church barbeque, celebrated my daughter’s birthday, chatted with local farmers, joined celebrations at Ely Pride, tasted some beer in a brewery, talked trains with a station manager, talked to children at a council holiday programme, seen the work of a homelessness charity, heard the concerns of community pharmacists, been interviewed on radio, and loads more. There’s been a great balance between the fun and the serious – I had a wonderful time high up in a combine harvester’s cabin, while also learning more about the continuous rise in rural crime, hare coursing, and fly tipping. My first constituency surgery is almost here, and there’ll be many more to come.

However, I’m ‘back to school’ in September (Parliament returns), which will see me holding the government to account in London. I’ve worked in London before, but never with armed police, tourists and gold around the workplace. As I said: it’s an odd new job, but it’s by far the best I’ve ever had.

TENNIS MARATHON RAISES £2000 FOR MACMILLAN

Ely Tennis Club’s Head Coach Jack Pearson completed a 12-hour tennis marathon on Sunday 4th July, raising over £2000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The first ball was served at 5am and after 165 games the final rally was played out with Becky Lemkow, and counted down by jubilant members and supporters.

More than 30 members and guests – including Jack’s Mum – took part in the event, either partnering with Jack or pairing up as opponents, and many more popped down to offer their support, sweets, coffee and cake!

After the event, Jack said “I want to thank everyone for their support and donations. It means so much to see so many members come together and get behind this event. What an amazing club! Five years ago, I lost my stepdad to cancer and Macmillan were incredible. They helped so much and gave us the opportunity to spend his final days with us at home.”

Welldone to Jack and all at Ely Tennis Club!

THE SMALL FESTIVAL WITH A BIG HEART

September 27/28/29th @ Kings Lynn Town Hall King's Lynn Literature Festivals (kllitfests.com)

Have you ever been to a Literature Festival? It’s not as dry as you might think. All the drama you view on your screens or listen to has been written for you by people such as those appearing at our Festival this September.

Do you recall BBC’s ‘Apple Tree Yard’ starring Emily Watson? Louise Doughty wrote this and Platform Seven, also filmed. Many of you will have picked up a holiday read and as we head into Autumn’s darker evenings you may want to read more and are perplexed by the choice on offer. Perhaps you feel that you ‘have a book inside you’ and contemplate tackling this long-held dream. Several of the authors will reveal some of the secrets about how they achieved this.

Our programme offers a chance to experience a wide variety of books and styles, presented and discussed by their authors in a friendly setting. Find out more - listen to writers presenting, debating and talk to them yourselves, ask them questions and join the discussion or just observe others doing so. We are known as ‘The Small Festival with a Big Heart’, come and discover why.

The festival bookstall will have books by all the writers, some of these provided by the new independent bookshop ‘Words&Wonder.’ Refreshments are available at each session.

Select the sessions that capture your interest; or buy a weekend ticket for all 6 and discover something new.

ANGLESEY ABBEY

Following a super busy and fun Summer of Play at Anglesey Abbey, we now turn our attention to the Dahlia Garden - open until mid-October. Boasting 60 varieties of dahlia, the flowers are planted in a large semi-circle, inviting visitors to walk further into the garden. The best time to see the garden is in September and into early October.

This autumn, you can also take part in some relaxing yoga sessions in the Dahlia Garden and Herbaceous Garden on Tues 10 and Sat 21 September. Head to our website to book your place; tickets include access to the gardens, a complementary hot drink and a dahlia posy to take home.

On the first and third Wed in September and October, you can join one of our expert guides on an accessible statue tour around the gardens to find out more about the history of the magnificent statuary collection at Anglesey Abbey, curated by Lord Fairhaven himself and if you’re looking for some family fun during October half-term, embark on our spooky woodland trail; pick up a torch and hunt for clues on your way around the twisty paths.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce that Wild In Art’s 10 massive bear sculptures are coming to Anglesey Abbey from 19 November 2024 to 5 January 2025. The Bear Hunt trail is inspired by Michael Rosen’s beloved children’s story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, published by Walker Books. Each bear has been painted creatively by ten national and international artists. Head to our website to find out more and also to book your tickets to see Father Christmas in the house for the first time this year at Anglesey Abbey.

In other news, we are pleased to be opening our doors again for the 2024 Heritage Open Days Festival between 6 and 15 September to non-National Trust members. There are a limited number of free entry tickets, which are available to pre-book on our website. And don’t forget to check out our new second-hand bookshop when you next visit Anglesey Abbey – see you there!

ELY CATHEDRAL WINS GOLD !

Ely Cathedral has been awarded the prestigious gold Eco Church Award in recognition of their dedication and commitment to walk in step with nature and take action on climate change. Ely is only the third Cathedral in the UK to achieve this outstanding achievement which was given by the Christian conservation charity A Rocha UK and reflects the Cathedral’s commitment to place creation care at the heart of everything they do.

The Very Revd Mark Bonney, The Dean of Ely summed it up in saying, “it is enormously gratifying that our care for God’s creation has been recognised in this way. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those on our Environment Working Group, the Cathedral’s Surveyor to the Fabric and Archaeologist, our fundraising team, Ely Cathedral Trust and our decarbonisation engineers at JG Consulting. We especially thank those who have done so much towards this in an entirely voluntary capacity, first by establishing the RENEW group

in 2019 and - since 2021 - as members of the Cathedral’s Working Group. The Revd Jenny Gage (formerly our Minister for Social Justice), who died in 2022, was instrumental in getting us started on this journey. This award is a fitting testament to her memory and a fantastic recognition of all that we do – and will continue to do – to respect the natural world”.

Vine Law is a modern law firm that was founded by people who want to do things differently.

We know that people are often reluctant to look to the law to solve their problems, whether because they don’t know what the law can do for them, they feel intimidated by the legal process, or because of a lack of control over costs. This should not be the case. We believe that the law is a tool that everyone should be able to access and use to protect themselves, their families, and their businesses.

We specialise in Wills, Probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Deputyship order applications,

Employment Law, Commercial Law, and Property. We put client experience at the heart of what we do. We give practical, straightforward and result-driven advice, delivered in a way to best suit individual client needs.

Vine Law’s new office is at Unit 16, E Space South, 26 St Thomas Place, Ely, CB7 4EX and any of the team can be contacted on 01353 240079. We look forward to seeing you there!

Inner Wheel Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The Inner Wheel was founded in 1924 by wives of Manchester Rotary members. The women wanted to alleviate the suffering they saw around them following the First World War. Their first act was to deliver 80 pieces of baby clothing to a local hospital. Inner Wheel clubs sprang up around the country and then abroad with clubs now in 104 countries and over 108,000 members. It is the largest women's volunteer organisation in the world and has representation at the United Nations. The International Convention took place in Manchester in June and was attended by over 2500 Inner wheel members from all around the world

In Ely the club celebrated by holding a stall on the market and gave out leaflets about the club and its activities. Members sold 100 donated items to raise funds for the chosen charity Alzheimer’s Society . A blanket was on display made-up of 100 squares knitted by member Julia Smith and this will be sent abroad along with other items to help disaster victims.

The Post box Topper which appeared outside Lloyds Bank in Ely was knitted by member Jenny Axford and celebrates 100 years of Inner Wheel.

Our International charity, chosen by club International organiser Julia Smith, was “Literacy in a Box” and after a fund raising evening and talk by its founder Ian Parker, a cheque for £500 was sent to help provide boxes of school materials for schools in Zambia.

Most recently in July we held our usual stall at Aquafest. catering mostly for children. Finally, as a result of our fund raising activities, President Pauline Lancaster was able to present a cheque for £1,282. 59 to Alzheimer’s Society, her chosen charity for the year.

Ely Inner Wheel club meetings take place on the 4th. Wednesday of the month at 7.00p.m at St. Mary’s Church Hall. Our next meeting is on 25th September, come along if you want to make friends and make a difference.

NUMBER OF RARE CORNCRAKES AT WELNEY TRIPLES IN

THREE YEARS!

The number of calling corncrakes at WWT Welney in Norfolk has tripled in just three years after the wetland centre was selected as a new release site for a reintroduction scheme. The corncrake is a small bird previously found across much of the UK, now lost virtually everywhere but the western islands of Scotland.

In 2021 WWT, the wetland restoration charity, was invited to host a new release site at WWT Welney as part of a reintroduction project that also involves Pensthorpe Conservation Trust, Natural England, Zoological Society of London and the RSPB. Describing the importance of the project Conservation Breeding and Monitoring Officer Emilie Fox-Teece said: “Having gone more or less extinct from England in the 1960s it’s amazing to hear corncrakes back on the Ouse Washes where they belong.

“Corncrakes rely on wet grassland to breed and raise their young, and this project is the perfect example of how using headstarting and habitat management together can restore lost wonders to our wetlands.”

In three years the numbers of male corncrakes recorded calling on the site has increased from just three males in 2021 to at least nine in 2024 with a similar number of female birds likely to also be present. This means that these birds have survived in the wild, completed their epic migration to sub-Saharan Africa and back, before returning to the exact site where they were first released.

Since 2021 WWT has released 300 birds into the wild to boost the population, and while absolute numbers recorded returning remain relatively low they are on the rise, and a population of 30-50 pairs would be likely to sustain itself.

If numbers continue to rise through reintroduction it is possible corncrakes could begin to repopulate the area themselves, assuming the wet grassland habitats they rely on as breeding grounds are properly managed.

ELY WILDSPACE

Across Ely Wildspace, dragonflies and damselflies take wing in the summer months. Half of the British breeding species can be found on a walk of little more than a mile along the riverside. It is not an exaggeration to say that the Wildspace is an outstanding place to see these beguiling winged wonders. This summer two species have been recorded for the first time within the Wildspace. Norfolk Hawkers are orange-bodied, green-eyed dragonflies that have recently moved away from a dependency on the floating plant, Water Soldier, to breed. They are rapidly expanding their range as a result. Since June several Norfolk Hawkers have been seen near Cuckoo Bridge. This area has also held Southern Migrant Hawkers. The males have striking iridescent blue bodies, blue eyes and a bright white patch on their face. They have a habit of hovering at eye level making them easy to observe once you have found one.

There are twenty-two other species of dragon and damselflies recorded in the Wildspace. a hotspot due to the variety of watery habitats and peripheral feeding areas. Species that are readily seen include Scarce Chasers and Black-tailed Skimmers – they both have pastel blue, broad and flattened bodies with dusky tail tips. Small, redbodied dragonflies may be Common or Ruddy Darters. Ruddy Darters look like their bodies have been pinched in at the middle and Common Darters are often the last dragonflies remaining on the wing into the autumn, with some still flying into November.

In June, Ely Women’s Vets FC hosted the first Women’s Vets Football Tournament in Cambridgeshire.

The football club is less than a year old, but it’s already been a huge success. With a core of 20 women – most from Ely but a few travelling some distance to play – we hold weekly training sessions and have organised friendly matches with another local team.

A club for women aged 35 and over was an idea that came to us a year after we founded Ely City Women’s team in 2022.

It wasn’t easy competing against players half our age! So we decided to create a brand new club for women in the same position as us. We quickly realised there were many women locally who wanted a chance to play – either going back to football or playing for the first time.

Not content with weekly sessions and keen to create a network of women’s vets teams, we decided to organise a tournament.

After three months of hard work, and thanks to many local businesses as sponsors, we hosted over 100 women in 14 teams on a fantastic Sunday afternoon. Wanting to make it special, we gave each team a snack box, and every player a medal, a tournament drinks cup, and professional photographers recorded the action on the day.

Without exception, every team asked us to do it again next year!

If you’d like to know more about us or how you can help with sponsorship for next year’s tournament, please email us: ElyWomenVets@gmail.com Emma Smith & Lucy Green

NEWS FROM WICKEN FEN

As the long summer days melt into autumn, Wicken Fen cools down, slows down. Some species retreat, set off for warmer climbs, just as a new cast arrive from further north. Wild geese, ducks, swans and thrushes. The latter come to gorge on berries and fruits, bright colours in the landscape alongside leaves of a hundred shades.

Why not join one of our friendly walking groups? The Wednesday health walks start in the car park at 10am every week and on Fridays the gentle-paced Wicken Wellbeing walk starts at 10am in the visitor centre. Warming drinks, soup and scones are available from the café afterwards, along with other tasty snacks and treats.

Before winter sets in, take advantage of the tranquil boat trips, which run daily (depending on weather) until October. Or hire a bike from Cycle Hire, which is open 10am to 4.30pm daily until the end of October, with last hire at 2.30pm and helmets available. We have recently added two recumbent trikes to the fleet.

Running until 29th September is the Sound Pools audio installation by artist Kathy Hinde. Wander along the boardwalk and find yourself bathed in hidden sounds from the Fen.

As always, there will be themed activities at the Family Discovery Area in the visitor centre. And why not browse the gift shop or second-hand Book Nook as the festive period draws ever nearer. Our popular Father Christmas at the Fen events are running each weekend from 23rd November to 22nd December – book fast before they sell out!

On 5th October and 16th November, you can create your own unique prints inspired by wildlife and landscape with tutor Judith Handley’s lino-printing workshops. Ideal for greetings cards.

Details of our events can be found on our website at https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ wicken-fen-nature-reserve/whats-on For the latest reserve information, please visit our website www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ wicken-fen

Amazingly warm and dry weather and the best in contemporary roots music greeted fans as they flocked to the Stuntney Estate last weekend for the 38th Ely Folk Festival. Three stages hosted a dazzling array of artists from world-renowned headliners to the brightest rising stars. Together with the full programme of extra activities including workshops, sound baths, yoga and sessions it made for a hugely enjoyable event.

Ticket sales for the festival were well up on 2023 and by early evening on Friday the site was packed with tents, camper vans, caravans and attendees eager to enjoy everything on offer.

There was a lot of dancing on the opening night. After a fine set on the Peregrine stage from festival band competition winners The Thomas Bradley Project, local favourites The Barefoot Doctors and Scottish award-winning folk stars Breabach got everyone up on their feet before the evening’s proceedings finished in the Kingfisher stage with a hugely popular ceilidh from Frog On A Bike that ran into the early hours. Quieter moments were provided in the Nightingale tent where an open stage night was held and on the Kingfisher stage with the local act showcases, where folk duo The Larks, laidback Americana from The Lost Hobos and powerful sets from Faradena Afifi and Rome kept the crowd happy.

On Saturday the quieter vibe continued in the Nightingale stage with workshops on bodhran and whistle playing and stepdance, a guitar workshop from festival patron Brooks Williams and the famous Ely Nightingale Competition where the prize is to open the main Peregrine stage on

Sunday. This year’s winner was EllY Tree, who wowed the Sunday crowd with a brilliant set of original material.

Saturday also featured the inaugural Ely Folk Festival Dog Bingo competition, where entrants had to find ten dogs wearing the special festival bandana (see above) and find out their names. The winner was Ellie Hankinson who won a £25 voucher as her prize.

In the afternoon folk legend John Kirkpatrick, now well into his fifth decade of performing, showed that he hadn’t lost a step, rising folk stars Christine Alden & Alex Patterson and The Shackleton Trio (who had also played as Kitewing the previous night) offered rich harmonies, powerful songs and exemplary playing before things hotted up with the multi-award-winning Morganway and their Fleetwood Mac-esque music and Peatbog Faeries high energy Celtic fusion getting everyone dancing yet again and bringing down the curtain on an outstanding day.

Sunday also had a quieter start as people recovered their energy and the sound centred workshop which featured a soundscape of unfamiliar instruments was particularly well attended, helping people relax into the day. A highlight of the afternoon was the special concert organised by festival patrons Boo Hewerdine and Brooks Williams, which featured them playing separately and together with friends Findlay Napier and Vera van Heeringen. Elsewhere David Gibb delivered a hilarious family show, Nick Parker showed an entranced crowd of children basic ukulele playing and there were yet more dancing opportunities in the ceilidh played by Stumpy Oak.

Festival headliner Eddi Reader took to the Peregrine stage as the sun began to set and delighted the crowd with a set of hits that included Fairground Attraction’s ‘Perfect’ and numerous others. Last but by no means least high energy young Welsh folk-rockers Rusty Shackle ended the festival on a high with the whole audience up on their feet.

Away from the stages attendees took full advantage of the beautiful Stuntney Estate, enjoying the nature walks around the festival site and also checking out the shopping opportunities in Ben’s Yard.

Fionnuala Lennon, the festival’s Marketing Director, said “This was undoubtedly a vintage year for the festival, and we are delighted that so many people came and enjoyed themselves. We’re already planning for next year’s event which we’re determined to make even better!”

THE MAYOR REFLECTS

A few weeks ago at a function I was attending with the Mayoress two youngsters asked me what a mayor actually did. It was a good question since there are several interpretations of the role 'doing the rounds' and there's plenty of scope for misunderstanding! I was able to tell the boys that the Mayor of Ely was not like the Mayor of, say, Greater London or Liverpool or the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority. Ely's Mayor did not possess a lot of money, great political clout; he wasn't directly directly elected nor did he campaign with the help of a political party. My questioners took all this in but persisted with their question - “But what do you actually do?”

I explained that part of my job description was that I should be the Chair of the City Council –presiding over Full Council meetings and seeing that business was conducted along proper lines. I emphasised how important it was to ensure that all colleagues had an opportunity to make their views known and to share in decision making and

went on to add that I was also on all the Council's committees so that I knew just what was going on and had a hand in shaping both the general direction of the Council and also specific policies. But young friends wanted to know more than that. They'd seen me, they said, at different functions and asked what I was doing there. I explained that sometimes I represented the City on important days in the civic calendar – for example laying a wreath at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday – and that there were other communitywide events at which the Mayor's presence emphasised just how important they were for the city.

Things like Aquafest, Eel Day, the Apple Festival, the Green Fair, Armed Forces Day and so on. I mentioned what a treat it was to attend events where our military and police cadets were in attendance and what a fine group of young men and women they were and - getting into my stride - I told them about another feature of the role of the Mayor –community building and the affirming of our Council's vision that Ely would always be a welcoming, diverse and inclusive community. I asked them if they could give me any examples of that sort of thing and they straight away mentioned Ely Pride.

Cllr Chris Phillips with Mayoress Mary Rone

I told them about wonderful visits to the Rich Tea Club which works alongside adults with learning disabilities and about sharing in an Iftar meal with our Muslim community during the holy month of Ramadan. “So you do have a good time?” I was asked. I said that we did indeed, and regaled them with stories about all the concerts we'd been to and just how much fun we'd had at Ely Folk Festival, at the Pantomime last Christmas and listening to the City of Ely Military Band at a couple of its upbeat events.

When I said that there was time for one last question I was pressed to say what I thought was the very best event the Mayoress and I had been to. That was a tough call to be asked to make in fact, almost impossible in fifteen months packed solid with 'very best events' - but I finally opted

for the Citizenship Ceremony we'd been to over at the New Shire Hall. Here we'd witnessed twentynine people, from every corner of the globe, becoming British citizens. It was a happy event and a time for optimism and hope. We stayed on afterwards to hear many moving stories and came away thankful that we'd had the opportunity to share in what was a pivotal moment in so many lives.

Of course there wasn't enough time to talk about absolutely everything that being the Mayor entails just as there isn't enough space here to write about it! But to hold the office is a real privilege and a genuine pleasure and no doubt there will be more to tell as the year moves on.

The City of Ely Council and the Visit Ely team are delighted to bring you a true celebration of the Harvest for 2024! Taking place October 12th, on both Palace and Cross Green, it will be the 24th Apple and Harvest Fayre.

From conception, back in 2000 this event has grown from strength to strength and is always a true delight to host. This year, the event is supported by Poets House Ely and with their support, Visit Ely are able to bring additional extras, such as entertainment and apple themed decorations to the day.

Anna Bennett said “Celebrating the humble apple has always been fun, with the longest peel, apple ID, and apple and spoon race all taking place throughout the day. There will be a host of stalls, all with a harvest and autumnal twist, with apple based produce thrown in ! If you are planning to attend, plan your day, as parking gets busy. The event opens at 10 am and the team are very much looking forward to welcoming the community and visitors”

ARTS SOCIETY ELY LECTURE - Oak trees. The Royal Navy and the shipyards of East Coast - Magdalen Evans. Sailing Boats have always occupied a pivotal place in Western Art. From medieval manuscripts, through Old Masters depicting exploration and military might to modern objects of every-day life they pervade the British imagination of young and old alike. This lecture will display paintings as well as many other forms of art which celebrate our island race’s fascination with our maritime history. In order to provide a firm case study Magdalen will show how the high quality of the woodlands in East Anglia gave rise to a flowering of boatyards along the estuaries and coastline of the North Sea resulting in bountiful commissions from both the Royal Navy and commercial patrons. Several still survive, where shipwrights train

apprentices in traditional boatbuilding, and an interesting connection with modern art and film-making thrives. She will show slides of stained glass, ceramics, tapestries, antiquarian book covers, advertising posters, weather-vanes, chandeliers, pub signs and even topiary all inspired by the English sailing boat. Lecture held at the Old Palace, Ely. Doors open 7pm for 7.30 start. Visitors are welcome for £7 on the door. www.theartssocietyely.org.uk email: smholgate@outlook.com

ARTS SOCIETY ELY LECTURE

The World's Greatest Paintings: 200 years of the National Gallery Simon Whitehouse. 2024 marks the bicentenary of the founding of the National Gallery. This lecture tells the story of the establishment of the NG collection beginning in 1824 when Lord Liverpool’s government purchased 38 paintings for £57,000 from the collection of businessman and philanthropist John Julius Angerstein. The paintings were initially displayed at 100 Pall Mall, Angerstein’s townhouse and by 1838, it was decided that a purpose built building was required, giving us the William Wilkins designed building we know and love on Trafalgar Square. During the course of the lecture we examine some of the high (and low) points of the early years of the gallery including suffragette sabotage, bombs and theft. We also take a close up look at some of the original "Angerstein 38” paintings. Lecture held at the Old Palace, Ely. Doors open 7pm for 7.30 start. Visitors are welcome for £7 on the door. www.theartssocietyely.org.uk

Sunday 8 September AN EVENING WITH SIMON RUSSELL BEALE

Spend an evening with Olivier Award-winning actor Sir Simon Russell Beale, CBE as he delves into his life and career to celebrate his new memoir, A Piece of Work.

Was Shakespeare an instinctive ‘conservative’ or, rather, gently subversive? How collaborative was he? Did he add a line to Hamlet in order to accommodate his ageing and increasingly chubby principal actor, Richard Burbage? Did he suffer from insomnia and experience sexual jealousy?

In conversation with a special guest, Simon will share what it's like to approach and live with some of Shakespeare’s most famous characters.

Drawing on the range of his experiences as a man who has played many parts – from his early days as Desdemona in a school production of Othello, to the title roles in Hamlet and Macbeth, as well as his on-screen highlights in films such as The Death of Stalin – Simon will share stories about where he finds his inspiration and divulges some surprising sources.

He’ll also share funny and touching anecdotes from his friends, including Sam Mendes, Nick Hytner, Stephen Sondheim and Lauren Bacall.

Come ready to savour a night with one of the finest actors of his generation.

Cambridge Arts Theatre, 6 St Edward’s Passage, Cambridge, CB2 3PJ Sunday 8 September 2024, 7.30pm

Ticket prices: £47*/ £33 /£31

*Top price tickets come with a copy of Simon’s new memoir, A Piece of Work (RRP £25).

ADULT EDUCATION IS HAPPENING IN SOHAM

ECTC have been running ‘taster’ sessions for a little while now. These have been one-off sessions funded by the government scheme ‘Multiply’, which encourages and builds confidence with numbers and numeracy. The sessions have included Crochet, Amigurumi, Macramé and Origami.

Now, it’s time to get a little more ‘serious’ and from September there will be Functional Skills courses running. These are perfect for anyone over the age of 19 who might have missed out on gaining qualifications in Maths, English or IT. Increasingly employers are requesting these functional skills when recruiting, and they are necessary to start an Apprenticeship.

It doesn’t matter what your ability is. If you haven’t previously gained a level 2 qualification in any of these subjects, you are entitled to take a free course.

These courses will be running from 16 September and will last 15 weeks with the potential for a qualification at the end.

From 16 September, we will also be running an ESOL class for those people for whom English is not their native language and who would like to improve their ability to communicate, including writing, listening and speaking. If you know someone you feel would benefit, please do pass the information on.

We know there are a lot of people in Soham who would benefit from these classes – please don’t miss this opportunity to open up your horizons and gain a qualification for free – all we ask is your time, and in return you will gain confidence, meet new people and enjoy the benefits of learning (which is scientifically proven to be good for you by the way!).

If you are interested in any of these courses please email ECTC@easterneducationgroup.ac.uk or call 01354 293130 (stating it is Soham you are interested in).
