On Thursday the 30th of May, the Rotary Club of Ely met at Ely Bowls Club as usual, but this time, not to have a meeting but, at the invitation of the Bowls Club, to have a taster at playing Bowls. All were agreed that was a most enjoyable evening with some success.

Dear Readers, I wanted to mark our 10th birthday with a slightly longer editorial than usual. I think it’s good to take a moment and reflect as you journey through life, don’t you? Although I have reached my 10th year producing the magazine as you know it, I actually did produce a few issues in 2005/6 as a trial. It wasn’t the right time, for me personally or for Ely and so I stopped and started working from home again as a piano teacher (another story!)
It’s nearly 20 years on and I’m proud of what we have achieved over the years from that faltering beginning to the magazine you see today. Well over 750,000 copies have been distributed to the people of Ely, providing information and encouragement to get involved in this vibrant community. Focussing on the good has always been the ethos of the magazine.
Some of you may know my husband, James, who was the Headteacher of St Mary’s Junior School in Ely from 2004 to 2014. We moved from Fordham in 2013 to the city centre to become more involved in Ely, nearer to work and church. I started the magazine again, feeling the time was right. It was indeed, because the response to the first little 28-page magazine in 2014 was fantastic with positive interest from locals.
But, as I was preparing the 3rd magazine in December 2014, James was taken seriously ill with a stroke, launching our whole family into a very different and unexpected chapter.
James spent nearly 11 months in Lewin Ward in Addenbrookes recovering from his brain injury and I was left juggling family, work and the 90-minute round trip to Cambridge every day as well as the mortgage. I discovered podcasts! but also spent quite a few moments sobbing in laybys on the A10. I'm not going to lie, it was a terrible
time. But, in a very weird way, it was the best time too... because people around us suddenly became wonderful! For example the children at St Mary's school dedicated their 2015 production of Joseph to James and raised £1000 for Lewin Ward in his honour.
Our family and friends were a wonderful support too, but what became more apparent to me was the support of ordinary strangers just doing their jobs well. It is something I have carried with me for the last few years. When your garage mechanic does a good job, when the checkout person at the supermarket has a proper conversation with you and when someone bothers to message you and say how much they appreciate a printed magazine in this age of online technology -it means so much.
People just doing their jobs well is such a gift to others and our little magazine is full of these people; local traders and businesses making their way in life. This has spurred me on to continue and make it the best it can be, for the people of Ely, but also for all those hard working people running a business or service here. For me, its a matter of principle that I do the best job I can for them.
There are many people who have contributed to the success of the Elyi and am very grateful, but I must mention a few people in particular; My good friend Leonie who manages the Elyi distribution and lets us use her garage as a depot (see her piece on facing page) You are a letterbox warrior, Leonie! and I couldn’t do it without you! Also a dear friend, Madeleine Funnell, who worked as my partner on the magazine at a critical time, building up the advertiser support. It’s one of
6 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
the hardest jobs! and I am very grateful for the time she devoted to establishing the magazine amongst the Ely business community. Also, to our distribution team who march through all weathers to each and every door in Ely! One of our families has delivered every issue except one. Anna, Jason, Alex and Scarlet, you are amazing!
Finally, thank you to all our advertisers. They are the only way the magazine can exist; They provide the funding to make it happen. I'm looking forward to the next 10 years too and then perhaps I will need to retire as I'll be a very old lady indeed! I will leave you with a picture of us at Buckingham Palace in May this year. What an honour to be invited. Yet another kindness from a person who would probably just say they were doing their job, the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Mrs Julie Spence.Thank you!
Have a lovely summer Bridget
FROM LEONIE
The Elyi and I have something in common. We share the same enthusiasm for our quirky little city!
I’ve been part of the distribution team since issue number two. Part of my delivery patch covers the Market Place, High Street, Market Street and Fore Hill; chances are, if you’ve picked up a copy from a business in town, I put it there. Perhaps you’ve seen me out and about with my fluorescent yellow trolley, Delilah.
Delivering Ely-i has meant that I’ve met many lovely people over the last decade, and made some brilliant friends. My most memorable moment was the day I was involved in rescuing an injured duck on the High Street by coaxing it with a biscuit while another woman threw a scarf over it so she could take it to the vet. The duck made a full recovery and was released back to the wild.
There was also the half-hour last September Delilah and I spent sheltering from heavy rain under the arch of Sacrist’s Gate, with delightful commentary from a three-year-old boy and his mum. I’ve absolutely loved being part of Ely-i’s story, and being involved in such a force for good in the city.
Thank you, Bridget, for letting me be a part of it!
Highfield Academy are delighted to join Elyi in their 10 year celebration.
Adam Daw, the Head, his and team wrote: For our Students, year 10 is all about preparation for adulthood and for their next transition point –this is usually an FE College or a Social Enterprise. We continue to work on core subjects such as English and Maths alongside “enterprise”, which includes one or more of: working on our onsite farm, preparing and selling lunches to staff; all aspects of running our online store – costing, production, marketing, etc. We also work hard on developing greater independence.
We are able to achieve this through the unbelievable support that we have received from so many businesses, charities, trusts, clubs, parents, staff and many others in the form of volunteers. Investments in so many essential areas that we just would not have without the Community support have contributed to our achievements.
Thank you sincerely to each and every one of you and a special thank to you Bridget of Elyi for sharing our joint successes over the past months.

COURT OF PROTECTION AND HELPING PEOPLE MANAGE THEIR FINANCES
If someone close to you is getting confused and struggling to manage their money, what can you do to help?
If the person has a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for finances in place, their chosen Attorneys may be able to help them immediately.
If there isn’t an LPA and they realise they need help, it's crucial to make one immediately. They must choose who will manage their affairs and understand the implications. Setting up an LPA takes around 16 weeks, including registration at the Office of the Public Guardian.
If they can’t manage this, a family member, friend, or professional must seek permission from the Court of Protection to act as a Deputy to manage their affairs.
The role of Deputy is to look after the person’s finances as set out in the order made by the Court of Protection. This could be just managing their day-to-day finances, but might include selling or buying property for their use.
To apply a professional capacity report is needed together with information about the person's financial affairs and family setup.
It can take time to gather the information and in our experience it can take around 12 months to get permission from the court. Until permission is given you can't manage their money.
It is always better to plan ahead, but if no LPA is in place and you need to apply to the Court of Protection we can assist and advise you.

The importance of good hydration as we age
As the warmer weeks set in, we reflect on the importance of keeping hydrated at any age, and in particular as we grow older. We’ve all been there: suddenly our mouth is dry and we can’t remember when we last had a sip of water.
While it’s easy to ignore our fluid intake, dehydration is associated with issues including reduced mental performance, fatigue and constipation. At its most severe, it increases the chances of hospitalisation and even mortality.
On the flipside, the benefits of good hydration are many and broad. It improves well-being and, in some instances, it may help us reduce medication and even prevent illness.
How to avoid dehydration
Because of physiological changes in the ageing process and certain conditions more prevalent as we age, older people can be more vulnerable to dehydration. This summer, we encourage you to:
• Watch out for the signs – including dryness of the mouth, lips and tongue. Urine is also a giveaway –strong colour and smell can mean more fluid is needed. As we age, it’s common to reduce drinking in the hopes of avoiding needing to go to the toilet, however restricting overall fluid intake does not reduce the frequency or severity of urinary incontinence.
• Think beyond water – adding a slice of lemon or fresh strawberries can make water more appealing and, if appropriate, consider squash, milkshakes or iced tea; and load up on fruit and veg like watermelon and cucumber.
• Create routines – for example, keep a jug of fresh water or squash next to you while watching your favourite TV show, and use the commercial breaks to remind you it’s time for a refill.
Having supported hundreds of families, I know that recognising when an older loved one is not drinking enough, and helping them to drink more can be a challenge, but paying closer attention is always a good start.
Keep well this summer and if you ever want to explore your support options, our team at The Orchards are available on 01353 885 165 for a no-obligation call or visit.

URGENTAPPEAL
Ely Foodbank feeds over 8000 people a year from its 9 foodbank sessions a week, held across East Cambridge and Fenland in Waterbeach, Haddenhan, Cottenham, Soham Chatteris, March, Ely and Soham.
At Ely Foodbank they don’t want anyone in the region to experience food poverty or its underlying causes. The charity makes it their business to help people at their time of crises and provide help to move forward. The foodbank helps in 3 main ways by providing emergency food to those in crisis, signposting effectively to other supportive services and directly helping people find long-term solutions to their issues.
Launched in 2012, Ely Foodbank works in partnership with a diverse range of organisations and members of the public across the region. It has grown rapidly in response to increased need as people across the region struggle to make ends meet. The cost-of-living crisis, inflation and low incomes all contribute to why there are increasing numbers of families forced to use our service.
Ely foodbank is delivered by dedicated volunteers who create a welcoming and caring environment where people who are in difficulty can get 3 days of emergency food and sit and have a cup of tea and a chat.
The charity treats everyone with dignity and respect while understanding that it can be daunting to have to visit a us.
Right now however, the shelves at Ely Foodbank are at their lowest levels for years so the charity has asked for desperately needed food donations.
Items which the food bank needs are
• tinned meat,
• tinned fruit
• tinned vegetables,
• UHT milk and fruit juices.
If you could add any of these items to your weekly shop and then pop it in the foodbank collection boxes in your supermarket that would be amazing.
Or to donate go to www.ely.foodbank.org.uk and click Donate. Any size donations welcome.

TOOLS WITH A MISSION
Ely Rotary Club were happy to receive an unusually large donation of useable tools this week on behalf of the Charity TWAM (Tools With A Mission). The tools were donated by ex-Missionary Keith of St Ives who worked for many years in Brazil before returning to the UK to continue his work and enjoy his hobby as a carpenter. Due to failing health Keith is no longer able to make use of his amazing collection of tools and his wish is that they are sent to the developing world to provide individuals living in extreme poverty with resources they need to develop skills and sustainable careers and feed their families every day.
With headquarters in Ipswich TWAM have volunteers across England and Wales and local groups across the country who collect unwanted useable tools, refurbish them and sort them into trade kits for distribution.

Fundraising as a company brings staff ‘Happiness in spades’
Here, James Stevens, Founder and CEO of As Volunteers’ Week 2024 kicks off, we hear from one Cambridgeshire company whose fundraising efforts have brought staff ‘happiness in spades’. Here, James Stevens, Founder and CEO of Cambridge Commodities, which provides nutritional ingredients across a variety of industries, talks about the positive impact that fundraising has had on his staff.
James, who founded his company working out of his parents’ spare bedroom at just 21 years of age, has since grown the company to the size it is today – with a global workforce of 170 staff and offices in Ely, Sacramento and the Netherlands. The company, however, didn’t start raising money for charity until its 20th year. “I really wanted to raise £20,000 for charity in our 20th year so started looking for a charity. Somebody wrote down Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust and it just stood out. It’s the perfect charity for a business of our location and size and it touches the hearts of every single member of staff. We all know someone who has either been admitted to the hospital or visited somebody there. All my children were born in the Rosie.”
Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT) is the official charity for Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals, and money raised by our supporters help make the hospitals even better by funding cutting-edge research, innovations and high-tech equipment, above and beyond what the NHS is able to provide.
One of the reasons for picking ACT as its charity was to be able to see the direct impact of all their fundraising efforts, James says - something that has happened on several occasions already with different members of staff, including Emily, the firm’s EU Account Manager, whose two-year-old Ayda was born in the Rosie just after Christmas. Emily had helped other members of staff to wrap Christmas presents which ACT funded
to be distributed to patients on Christmas Day. Emily, who had been booked to have a C-Section on New Years’ Eve, went into labour early and was admitted to the Rosie on Christmas Eve.
“I was in hospital on Christmas Day waiting to give birth, so I received one of the Christmas presents that ACT had funded; some hand cream and body lotion, which was a really thoughtful present. Something like that just makes you feel supported and reassured that people are thinking of you and trying to make you feel better about being in hospital over Christmas, when you don’t want to be.”
Another member of staff to see the direct impact of their fundraising efforts was Natalie Scott Paul, the firm’s Head of Payroll, who organises the Annual Christmas Ball with finance manager Carly Purell.
“As one of our things we wanted to do, staff chose to pay the salary of a play therapist. That year my daughter was admitted to Addenbrooke’s, and the play therapist came to see her while she was waiting to be seen. I texted everyone at work and said, ‘we did that!’”
Staff have taken part in, or organised, a range of activities or events – from wrapping Christmas presents for patients to competing in the Cambridge Half Marathon to handing out daffodils to hospital staff at Easter.
38 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
“We were handing out daffodils to staff as they were leaving work for the day,” James said, “and to see the smiles on their exhausted faces, you cannot describe how good that feels. To see them all leaving and to be able to say thank you is amazing. I think we all had a little cry when we got home that day.”
The firm has organised other events themselves - from cake bakes to a cyclathon (24 hours of cycling); a Walking Challenge where staff had to walk the equivalent in miles from their office in Ely to their office in Sacramento (over 5,000 miles which they managed to more than double) as well as their annual Christmas Ball, which after five years is soon expected to top half a million pounds raised.
ACT’s Corporate Partnerships Manager Natasha Robertson said companies who would like to join forces with the charity can get involved in a number of different ways, from making one-off
donations to choosing ACT as its Charity of the Year.
“Most of the companies that we work with have a connection with the hospitals and find fundraising a really worthwhile, bonding experience. Employees can organise their own fundraising events or take part in some of the fun events that we organise throughout the year, including the Dragon Boat Race and the Cambridge Half Marathon.”
“We have a diverse range of companies across sectors that are fundraising on our behalf and as we continue to grow.”
As for James, he says fundraising gives his staff an enormous sense of pride as well as helps him get to know employees in areas of the business he wouldn’t normally interact with. It also helps with recruitment.
“We have people saying they chose us as an employer because we had a relationship with a charity.”
For any company thinking of becoming a corporate supporter for ACT, James has this to say: “You just need to find the time to do it but that is paid back in spades through the happiness of your staff.”
If your company is able to support ACT and is looking to make a real difference, please email Natasha at: Natasha.Robertson@ act4addenbrookes.org.uk

Author: Tom Reilly
Oliver Cromwell continues to inflame opinions over 360 years since his death. One of the areas that remains a flash point is Cromwell’s campaign in Ireland between 1649 and 1650. To this day, the name Oliver Cromwell is the equivalent of using extreme profanity in parts of Ireland. However, is it possible that this animosity is based on misinformation?
Oliver Cromwell’s House was honoured to host Tom Reilly, Author of books including “Cromwell was Framed: Ireland 1649” and “The Protector - The Fall and Rise of Oliver Cromwell” who has made waves within the Cromwellian sphere by refuting the accepted narrative! Upon delving deeply into the records and evidence that have informed the discord around “the Irish issue”, Tom found sizable holes in the arguments that are presented as fact, the arguments that would have Cromwell leading massacres bordering on localised genocide. Ranging from the execution of people who had taken shelter within a church, to the Governor of Drogheda being beaten to death with his own wooden leg, no accusation goes unexplored.
Without going into extensive detail, as that would be unfair to the work that Tom has already done so well in his books, it is perhaps time that we at least consider that these claims of butchery and barbarism come to light only
History Corner
once Oliver is dead and when King Charles II has been restored to the throne of Britain. The evidence used to promote these claims also struggles when placed under close inspection, making the enquiring mind question the accepted claim that Cromwell was the bloodthirsty barbarian at the gates.
It is only fair that you, the reader, get the chance to explore and decide for yourselves. Tom’s books are available at www.olivercromwellshouse.co.uk and from the Gift Shop at Oliver Cromwell’s House.

GREENER TOGETHER - MAY 2024 CONNECTING OUR COMMUNITIES TO GROW OUR ACTION TOGETHER
This community event showcased local community led green initiatives. In addition to hearing about the climate friendly retrofit of Gardiner Hall in Burwell and the blossoming Repair Café movement, there were also opportunities to learn about Community Energy plans and digital mapping technology which can empower local councils.
Over 50 individuals from voluntary groups, parish councils and the wider community came along to the Greener Together event at Gardiner Hall in Burwell on 15 May. It was co-hosted by Cambridgeshire County Council, Burwell Parish Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council, East Cambs Climate Action Network and Cambridge Carbon Footprint. It was a lively afternoon with stalls, presentations, discussions and tours of Gardiner Memorial Hall.
The aim of the event was to connect people who care about the environment and our changing climate and for them to inspire and encourage each other to grow action together. The feedback was incredibly positive, with people saying they felt much better equipped to set up their own green initiatives after the event.
If you missed the event but are keen to get involved, East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network are keen to hear from anyone who has an idea for a new Project or activity or want to get involved in any existing projects or activities.
Please contact Peter Bates via email: peter@eastcambscan.org
GREENER TOGETHER
WANTED
“Community Energy Champions” to develop local Low Carbon Energy Projects across East Cambridgeshire.
The East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network (CAN) is looking for “Community Energy Champions” in Ely and from across the whole of East Cambridgeshire to develop their own local community energy projects initiated by LOCAL people and WANTED by the local community. Potential “Community Energy Champions” are invited to get in touch to be inspired, encouraged and supported to develop a local community energy project, in with their local community.
Aimed at addressing the current energy crisis and the climate change challenge, projects could take on a variety of different formats like local energy clubs where people get together to share experiences of reducing energy costs and improving the energy efficiency of their homes.
Or, it could be local residents getting together with greater “bargaining power” to put solar PV panels on their roofs and being able to get a good deal from a supplier who could install ten systems locally rather than just one.
Please contact Peter Bates via email: peter@eastcambscan.org

ELY FOLK CLUB THEN AND NOW
Ely Folk Club had its first concert in September 1990 and since then has been held it many venues in and around Ely, some which no longer have a function room, others no appropriate music licence and various other reasons.
In 2014 we were meeting at the Old Dispensary in St Mary’s Street with a capacity of around 40-50 people and we continued there right up to the Covid 19 pandemic and lockdown.
Once we were able to meet again, the need for social distancing meant that we couldn’t accommodate a viable number of people in the Old Dispensary and, with regret we took the decision to move out of Ely to the Arkenstall Centre in Haddenham. For the first few concerts there we worried that we’d lose our Ely audience but our fears were unfounded and we simply gained a larger following in Haddenham and surrounds.
Here are a couple of photos showing the late, much-loved Vin Garbutt playing at the Old Dispensary in 2014 and hugely popular Show of Hands at the Arkenstall Centre in February this year playing to a sellout crowd.

Welney promises a summer of wonder with new postcard adventure trail
Families looking for a fresh adventure that will deepen their connection with nature can enjoy a new postcard adventure trail launching for the school summer holidays at WWT Welney. The trail is one of many activities planned that will offer a summer of wonder for all exploring the wetlands. Giant postcards, designed by children’s illustrator Ella Beech, share personal messages from nine animals who live in wetland habitats around the world. Dotted across 1.4km of trail exploring part of our 1,300 acre wetland centre, those on the adventure trail at WWT Welney use a trail map to find the postcards and discover new wetlands and the animals that thrive within them.
Created to offer an unforgettable experience, the postcard trail will encompass all corners and habitats of the WWT centre, so not only will explorers read what’s happening in wetlands across the globe, but see, up close and personal, the interesting species enjoying the summer months at WWT Welney.
This includes close up views of our high flying summer visitors like swallows and house martins nesting and caring for chicks at our main hide. Watching mute and whooper swan families with their ‘ugly ducklings’ on the pools and waterways viewed from our hides and trails. Making contact with otherworldly creatures at our moth mornings (Tuesdays each week), spotting day flying moths and colourful butterflies whilst bug hunting throughout our wetlands. Getting eye to eye with dragonflies and damselflies, some of them daintily flying over the grasses and wildflowers,
whilst others find a sunny spot to perch and await a mate. The wealth of insect life is a vital part of the wetland ecosystem, both above the water’s surface and below.
Families completing the trail will have a WWT Welney postcard, so they may share their amazing experience and what they’ve learnt about wildlife and nature with a loved one.
Emma Brand, Events & Marketing Officer at WWT Welney, said: “We love sharing the wonder of the wetlands with families and can’t wait to welcome them this summer for a truly memorable day out. The postcard trail offers a real opportunity for them to explore nature and learn more about wildlife, both here and around the world. It’s a completely unique experience families simply won’t find anywhere else.”
The postcard trail is part of an on-going programme of summer 2024 activities at WWT Welney that includes pond dipping, exploring nature with play, getting up close to insects whilst bug hunting, meeting otherworldly creatures at moth mornings and other activities. Families who want to get involved just need to pick up a trail map at the visitor centre. More information about this activity and all the exciting and educational things to do at WWT Welney can be found at www.wwt.org.uk/welney
Participating in WWT Welney’s postcard trail is included with an admission ticket or is free to WWT members.
The trail will run from Saturday 20 July until the end of the school summer holidays, full details can be found at https://www.wwt. org.uk/wetland-centres/welney/whats-on/ summer-postcard-trail-6

Anglesey Abbey
The Rose Garden at Anglesey Abbey is in bloom and boasting 60 beautiful beds of roses now. Thanks to a generous donation from David Austin Roses, we have another 19 cultivars in the garden and some 180 new roses this year. We’d also like to say thank you to a group of students from Emmanuel College, Cambridge, who dedicated a day to volunteering, hoeing, and weeding in the Rose Garden last month, post exams.
Do come and make the most of the summer evenings at Anglesey Abbey this month and explore the Herbaceous Border, Wildflower Meadows and Formal Garden. Every Wednesday in July, the gardens will be open until 7:30pm. Why not bring a picnic dinner or go for a walk to unwind after work? The shop will be open until 7pm, and Redwoods Restaurant will serve food until 7.15pm.
On Saturday 13 July, you’re invited to join us for an event called ‘Whispers of Wonder’ – a one-off evening of magic and history, with performances from world-class magicians inside the house. Guests will enjoy exclusive access to the gardens, and food and drink will be available to purchase between performances. The Rose Quartet, Cambridge, will also be playing on the front lawn. Tickets are limited, so do book early to avoid disappointment.
The Lord Chamberlain’s Men are also coming to Anglesey Abbey this summer. Experience the drama of outdoor theatre and enjoy a picnic while watching Shakespeare’s Hamlet performed in the gardens on Saturday 17 August. Please see our website for more details and to book your tickets.
Looking ahead to the summer holidays, we have an activity-packed Summer of Play lined up for the whole family from 20 July to 1 September, sponsored by Starling Bank. With five creative play zones across the gardens as well as story times, craft activities, bubble shows, lunchtime discos and even some crazy golf, there’s plenty to keep you busy and coming back for more throughout the summer.
Wicken Fen
We’ve been enjoying some summer weather here at the Fen. The Summer Nature Trail is the longest route around the Sedge Fen. It has been given time to rest to allow the delicate peat soils to recover and opened on 1st June. It’s a special part of the reserve, full of lush green foliage and fen plants and flowers. This circular route is approximately 2 ¼ miles long and is a beautiful place to look out for marsh orchids, dragonflies and butterflies.

A fantastic £3200 has been raised for Oasis Ely Cancer Hub by Ely’s ‘Zumba with Nella', members of our community and local businesses.
Zumba enthusiasts got together at the end of April at the Ely Paradise Centre for a two hour dancing ‘Zumbathon’. The atmosphere created was energetic, friendly and inclusive. All the money raised has gone to support a vital local community group making a positive difference to the lives of those affected by cancer in Ely and its vicinity.
Angels Arribas, founder and coordinator of Oasis Ely Cancer Hub, said “I’m so very grateful to everyone’s enormous generosity, enthusiasm and support, especially to Nella and her amazing Zumba Family. This money will make a huge difference to the on-going work at Oasis Ely Cancer Hub and means we can keep giving support and information to those dealing with cancer in our community. Oasis aims to raise awareness and create community support for those going through cancer and this Zumbathon 2024 has certainly sparked a wonderful collaboration - thank you very much everyone!”.
Oasis Ely Cancer Hub offers free support, information and well-being activities for anyone experiencing cancer in Ely and its surroundings, for both patients and carers. For information email at oasiselycancerhub@gmail.com
We are also 'celebrating' our two years and a half years since we opened the doors of Oasis
Ely Cancer Hub. Oasis has welcomed over forty members from Ely and surrounding villages.
Our welcoming, practical and inclusive approach is creating a strong support network to help those during and after a cancer journey. Our Friday face to face and Zoom sessions this year have included:
• Introductions to the Cancer Support Service and to the Physiotherapist in Oncological Rehabilitation & Exercise team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital; updates from our local Social Prescribers and news on the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital.
• Practical talks on how to cope with visible side effects of cancer and treatment - caring for your skin, nails, hair provided by local Boots No.7/Macmillan Cancer Support beautician.
• Wellbeing sessions have included flower arranging; beginners watercolour and decoupage greeting card workshops; mindfulness and chair based exercise; and informal talks including an historical journey through medicine over the centuries.
On a regular basis, Oasis shares and signposts news on cancer care and support available in our area.
Our Friday sessions and our network of contacts have helped to create this supportive community hub. It greatly benefits from contributions from generous local professionals and members of our Community. Thank you to all for giving your support.
We are very grateful to the Elyi Magazine team for sharing our news over the last few months!

Ely Ribe Association News
In April 2024 Ely’s town twinning Association put on an exhibition at the buzzing community hub of Ely Library. Members were on hand to answer questions and visitors could find out more about visits to and from Ribe over the years, most recently in May and November 2023. We handed out copies of our new guide to the tapestry created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the link and on display in the Riverside Maltings.
During the exhibition around 20 people attended an entertaining illustrated talk as part of the Library’s Engage extra programme. This gave an overview of Ribe’s history and recent developments there, as well as insights into the early days of the partnership and highlights from the recent exchange between City Tour Guides here and in Ribe.
With our 70th anniversary coming up in 2026 we invited ideas from the audience as to how they thought we might best mark this milestone – and would be happy to hear from Elyi readers too!

My Heart in Nature
Veronica in the Fens
Since I was a little girl in northern Sweden, I have always loved being outdoors, especially out on forest walks, climbing trees, swimming in the sea or a lake, skiing down a hill or just watching the sky.
Ten years ago in 2014 when my Granddad passed away, I felt I wanted to write a few words for his funeral, because he had meant a lot to me and had ignited my love for the outdoors in my childhood years. When I revisited all the memories and everything, he had thought me, I realised how much of that I was missing and how important it was to me too.
Over the last few years after returning to Ely, I have started to spend more time out walking in The Fens with my camera. The landscape has a deepening in the flatness here and it gives amazing opportunities for sky photography, especially with Ely Cathedral as a true architectural star.
I have shared my photos on social media and have had so much positivity and lovely comments. This inspired me during my furlough in Lockdown and ‘Veronica in the
Fens’ was born in the spring of 2020. I built my own website, an online shop and created my own brand.
What I wish to share is the magic in nature that I see and capture on my walks, during all times of the day. My hope is that my photos will inspire the viewer and follower, to hopefully awaken something within them to spend more time outside. The best of all is that Nature is a true free healer, and it gives us so much more than we can ever imagine. I love Nature & how it nourishes our Souls

This July Cambridge Arts Theatre welcomes London Classic Theatre, who present a riotous new production of Joe Orton’s farce, What the Butler Saw.
Within his private psychiatric clinic, Doctor Prentice is interviewing a new secretary. Geraldine wants the position but seems underqualified and uncertain about her parentage. Mrs Prentice appears, flushed and in urgent need of a drink, following an illicit encounter at the Station Hotel. In the meantime, Doctor Rance, a Government Inspector and Sergeant Match, a policeman, arrive amidst increasing chaos with searching questions of their own.
“…Joe Orton's classic farce still packs a punch over half a century on…” BROADWAY WORLD
What The Butler Saw is Joe Orton’s most ambitious and final play, manic farce and masterclass in fearless comic writing. The play premiered at Queen’s Theatre on 27 January 1969. No institution, political view or tradition is safe, as Orton explores comic territory few playwrights have dared to visit.

STORIES FROM MY MOTHER'S CABINET
This solo exhibition from Helen Murray focuses on a metaphorical ‘cabinet’, exploring the transformation of seemingly mundane materials into new forms whether in paint, found objects or mixed media pieces. Helen uses mostly natural and organic materials, collected from the streets where she lives, her garden and local beaches. During the process of re-working these, possible new identities begin to emerge, with the artwork becoming a miniature theatre in which characters and narratives can be interpreted according to the viewer's imagination. Often working in a grid format, the artist applies layers of materials over individually painted squares.
Helen Murray is a self-taught artist from northeast Suffolk. Having previously worked as an illustrator, she set up Artbox (now Artboxarts CIC) in 2009 which offers art sessions for adults with special needs. In her art, she aims to evoke a mood or atmosphere within objects, finding inspiration in words, alphabets, poetry, music, archaeology and ancient landscapes.

Mothers’ Union is a global Christian movement helping the world’s hardest-to-reach communities to transform their lives. We have been providing support for families since 1876. Our 4 million members are active in 84 countries, building a future where everyone can thrive. In the Diocese of Ely we actively seek to do this regionally and locally. Some of our projects include: supporting parents and providing holidays for families in need; supporting prisons and collecting items for refuges and hostels; knitting and sewing projects for hospitals, care homes and overseas. MU actively supports campaigns on social justice issues including the UN 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence and The Clewer Initiative which works in raising awareness and prevention of Modern Slavery.

Ely Brick Show is back for 2024, where every brick tells a story and imagination knows no bounds! The Ely Brick Show, conceived by the father and son Duncan and Kayla in 2019, began as a humble gathering in the Countess Free Church, raising a modest £1500 in its inaugural year. Since then, it has evolved into a great event, capturing the hearts of attendees and raising over £9,000 for charity.
Our chosen charity for 2024 is Centre 33 which supports young people up to the age of 25 with their mental health, caring responsibilities, housing, sexual health and more.
But the Ely Brick Show is more than just a fundraising event; it's a celebration of creativity and community. Join us for exciting activities like Spot the Minifig, speed builds, Lego Robot Wars,
Downhill Race Track, Mosaic Build and the thrilling Rally Car Challenge. Explore the offerings of our Lego traders, meet special guests from a galaxy far far away, and let your imagination run wild in our dedicated Lego and Duplo play areas.
Mark your calendars for the Ely Brick Show 2024—a spectacle of compassion, creativity, and fun! Join us as we build a brighter future, one brick at a time!
Tickets are £5 each (Under 3’s go free), which includes all activities and free entry to each of our competitions, Spot the Minifig and Speed Build. Follow Ely Brick Show on Facebook https://www. facebook.com/elybrickshow and on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/elybrickshow
