Lis Every Mayor of Ely I can hardly believe that two years has almost passed and I approach the end of my term as Mayor. So it seems an appropriate time to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the people I have met and worked with during this time. I have always felt that working in partnerships and teams is the best approach and I have been privileged to have spent these two years working with some wonderful people. I particularly want to thank the staff at the City of Ely Council who work so hard to implement the Council’s responsibilities and have personally been a real source of friendship and good advice!
community. The generosity of our local businesses in donating raffle and auction prizes resulted in our raising just over £4,000 which will contribute to our volunteers’ fund to be administered by VCAEC. On 16th May at the Mayor Making Meeting at the Maltings I will be handing over to the new Mayor. I have been hugely privileged that the people of Ely have allowed me to come into their lives and get to know them better. I have a number of projects that I will continue with as a direct result of this, as well as my work with the City and ECDC Councils, so plenty to do! My best wishes to my successor, Cllr Ian Lindsay, and my fellow councillors. It has been an amazing two years. Thank you.
The last few weeks have been full of really exciting activities. The Volunteers’ Celebration evening at the Maltings was our opportunity as a Council to say ‘thank you’ to all the volunteers who work directly with us. We could not function without them and are hugely indebted to them. Fund raising has been a real focus this month with the Mayor’s Ball at the Maltings. I was pleased to welcome many guests representing our

Elyi Magazine | April 2016|
So, what’s it like being a midday supervisor? When asked to write a piece about being a midday supervisor at Ely St John’s Primary School it wasn’t that I found myself struggling with what to write, but rather with what not to write. Should I write about being on the playground, being part of a team responsible for 250 children, being the person they come to if they are too hot, too cold, happy, unhappy, hungry, thirsty, tired, excited? Should I write about the little girl who last week with a twinkle in her eye beckoned me down and whispered in my ear, “Do you know the tooth fairy secret?” The excitement and pride in her eyes of being privy to a very special and very grown up secret. How about when I crouched down and whispered back that I did, but part of knowing the secret is keeping the magic alive for other children. She assured me that she would, skipped off and turned around and stage whispered, “What about the Santa secret, do you know that one too?” Should I write about fixing grazed knees and drying tears, the head bumps, the sore fingers, the wobbly teeth? Or maybe about the magical fairy dust that I keep in my pocket, that comes out when children need a giggle after suffering a bump, the promise that it will make them better, but watch out because if I sprinkle too much on them there’s a chance that they might grow wings and fly away....
Working with children at lunch times is a privilege; you are an important person to them. They see you everyday. Maybe instead I should write about being in the lunch hall, cutting up what seems like thousands of sausages and roast potatoes, sharing a smile and a few words with each child I help. Telling the children that their lunch looks so tasty it’s making my tummy rumble, pretending to steal a chip and seeing them laugh. The hands that go up to tell you that they’ve finished, they’ve got a joke, they got a sticker earlier today, they miss their Mummy, their favourite colour is green, did I know that spiders have eight legs? Did I know that the sun is hot? The sky is made of blueness... Dashing across the hall as I’ve noticed there are dozens of trays piled precariously one atop the other and a delighted child is standing on their tip-toes to add another.
I know the names of every single child in my playground, I know their likes, their dislikes, what makes them laugh, who their friends are and what games they like to play. You are with them everyday come rain or shine. You see them when they are happy and you see them when they are sad.
Working with children at lunchtimes is a privilege, you are an important person to them, they see you everyday.

Matthew, from Anglia Wines brings us his recommendations...
Anno Kent Dry Gin is created in Patience, our fantastic small batch copper pot-still. Being located in Kent, the Garden of England and an area of natural beauty allows us to source some of our wonderful flavour defining botanicals from the local area. Great on it’s own, with ice or tonic, the perfect summers evening tipple with elderflower sparkly 1724 Tonic (£2.20 per 200ml bottle) 1724 Tonic Water is premium quality tonic water. The name is derived from the quinine used which is hand-picked at 1,724 metres above sea level on the Peruvian Inca Trail. The taste is a slightly less bitter tonic, with a refreshing citrus zing. This tonic water is carbonated to give a sparkle similar to those found in premium Champagne too and the result is both lively and effervescent.

BUSINESS
Does your brand need a spring clean? It’s that optimistic time of year when spring cleaning your home helps you look forward to a positive new season. If you run your own business or know someone who does, you may also be thinking about refreshing your brand and getting a professional to help you. Apart from a change of season, you should look at rebranding for the following reasons: 1. When it really needs an overhaul! It can be difficult to stay fresh and contemporary especially if your competition is perceived as more modern and appealing that you are. Revisiting your logo, colours and typeface design can help refresh your image with customers. Trusted existing customers can provide some of the best market research, so ask them for feedback if you can.
2. Repositioning your offering as your business grows or changes, may mean it stands for something different than it first did. Your brand can evolve to reach new audiences, but the challenge is to remain connected with your target customers and reach new ones. Your brand expert will be able to help here.
3. When your customers evolve, your brand should too. Your business needs to be relevant and noticed. When areas such as technology, convenience and pricing become important to customers, they should be the same to your business too. Keeping existing clients happy with a new or updated brand can be more effective than chasing new customers.
4. When you take on an existing business and you want to put your stamp on the brand, you might want to think about updating it. Be mindful as the brand may already hold some goodwill and customers may recognise and appreciate it already.
Your brand can evolve to reach new audiences, but the challenge is to remain connected. Remember, if you are not willing to invest in your brand, don’t be surprised if your customers don’t either. Your brand is a significant asset in your business, so don’t take rebranding lightly as it can be costly if not executed well. But a change is as good as a spring clean, and recognising the need to evolve your business is a great first step. From there, building a brand that lasts requires commitment from you and your clients. Sailesh Raithatha As in Boat Ltd

notAdrill Limited App Development
Do you have a great money spinning idea for an App but you do not know how to create one. Or do you run a business which needs some bespoke software for Mobiles and/or Desktops. We can help you design, develop and promote your idea. Tel: 020 8242 1926 eMail: apps@notAdrill.co.uk The Children’s Society in the Diocese of Ely In the late nineteenth century, Edward Rudolf, a young Sunday school teacher and civil servant in South London, found himself confronted by the brutal effects of poverty on the lives of children. When two young boys failed to turn up for his Sunday school, he went to look for them and was shocked to find them begging for food on the streets. Their father had died, leaving their mother struggling to bring up seven children under 11 years old. Theirs was not an isolated experience and Rudolf was moved to act. By 1919, Rudolf had established the Children’s Society at the forefront of providing services to vulnerable children. Not much has changed. Not a week goes by where there is not a story of child neglect, poverty, injustice or child sexual exploitation.
The Hard Truth is that Over 219,000 children across the East of England have been categorised as children in need. Get involved and help us change the world for children. We have a number of exciting volunteer roles, which means you can give as much, or as little time as you feel is appropriate. Fundraising volunteers are urgently required to organise their own events, from cake baking to coffee mornings. Fundraising Support Groups are required: 4 to 6 like-minded people can form a group, bring their community closer together, whilst raising more for a good cause. Volunteer Speakers are needed: To talk about the work of the Children’s Society in schools, businesses and churches, promoting our vision, values and support for vulnerable children.

Through these connections artists have had the opportunity to glimpse behind the scenes of Cathedral life, past and present. This exhibition includes a wide variety of styles and media, reflecting the diversity of the OuseLife artists. A new perspective on Cathedral life is revealed through Painting, Sculpture, Textiles, Photography, Prints, Film, Willow Work and Ceramics. Simply Fantastique!
April means we’re off to see the Wizard at The Maltings, Ely with KD Productions putting on pantomime The Wizard of Oz.
A review of Ely Sinfonia’s concert on Saturday 12th March 2016 in Ely Cathedral.
This spectacular version of L. Frank Baum’s classic story is packed with good jokes, quality song and dance routines, loads of glitz, spectacular scenery and plenty more for all the family! Follow the adventures of Dorothy, all the way from Kansas, as she goes on a magical adventure to the Land Of Oz in search of a way home. Along the way she makes new friends - the Scarecrow, who longs for a brain, the Tin Man, who really wants a heart, and the cowardly Lion, who is desperate to be brave and have some courage. Dorothy and friend’s journey isn’t easy though, with the Wicked Witch of the West keeping a close eye on her! But will the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz be able to help them? The show runs from 1st - 4th April 2016 with tickets from £10. Visit the online box office for more information and to get tickets. https://thelittleboxoffice.com/kdtheatre Looking ahead to Summer, local groups are busy working on a bunch of great musicals and plays to look forward to. CAT Theatre Company will be putting on the hit musical Sister Act from Thursday 2nd to Saturday 4th June. Viva Group present musical Sweeney Todd from Sunday 12th to Saturday 18th June 2016. Ely Amateur Dramatic Society will be bringing Shakespeare to life with Much Ado About Nothing – exact dates to be confirmed in the next few weeks. On the 8th and 9th July, the Littleport Players will be bringing us comedy musical Avenue Q – taking place at Littleport Village Hall. More information on all these productions coming soon!
The phenomenal technique of the conductor and instrumentalists was evident from the start and shaped this performance into something special. Tara Bungard (soprano) has an excellent voice. Breath control, placement and projection of the sounds into the massive cathedral were perfect such that I could not help comment immediately afterwards – ‘Now THAT is how you sing!’ She coloured the songs from the Auvergne beautifully and when she reached the final one it became obvious why this work had been included in the programme. When the last song, Bailèro, began there was an intake of breath from the audience – this very popular song used by so many in different scenarios, floated through this huge building exquisitely – a real spine-chilling affair. The evening culminated with another wellknown work: ‘Symphonie Fantastique’ and all the eccentricities, heart-wrenching climaxes and extremely varied scenes from the glittering splendour of waltzing dancers to the sinister toll of the death knell were conveyed confidently and effectively by this now experienced orchestra. For more information about this phenomenal orchestra see: www.elysinfonia.co.uk Rosemary Westwell
Matt Harvey Ely Arts Theatre www.facebook.com/elyartstheatre
www.elyimagazine.com
Under the expert baton of Steve Bingham (pictured), Ely Sinfonia presented a concert of French music in Ely Cathedral on Saturday. The varied programme included ‘Danse Macabre’ by Saint-Saëns, ‘Chants d’Auvergne’ by Canteloube featuring soloists Tara Bungard and ‘Symphonie Fantastique’ by Berlioz. The first work, ‘Danse Macabre’, contained all the ingredients of a vibrant emotional story of death as a symbolic figure. There was much swapping of instruments by these excellent performers during the evening and this was the first demonstration of this.

Ely Watercolour Workshop The Ely Watercolour Workshop is an informal group of aspiring, (or sometimes, perspiring), artists, of varying levels, who get together, weekly, on a Tuesday evening, at Ely Community College. The evenings run, officially, from 6.30 pm to 9.00 pm but members may come and go as time or commitments allow. The group, in one form or another, has been going for 30 years. There is no formal tuition, but the members do try to help each other and will, occasionally, do demonstrations of various aspects of watercolour painting. A programme of ‘topics’, for each week, is produced, for each term, although the subjects are not mandatory. Members are free to ‘do their own thing’, if they so wish, but are invited to participate in the programme, as much as possible. In the summer term and holiday period, the EWW tries to encourage ‘outdoor’ painting with a selection of suggested venues, in and around Ely. We do, occasionally, arrange an all day workshop with an outside ‘professional’ artist, for extra tuition and experience. Each year, the EWW arranges TWO exhibitions of paintings, together with the ever popular hand painted greetings cards. One at Easter and one in October school half-term holidays. The usual venue is the Almonry restaurant, off the Market Square, in central Ely. The fees are £20, per half-year, payable at the first meeting in January, and first meeting in September. Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire who are living with a life-limiting illness. Our care and services are provided free of charge to patients. Recently, the hospice has witnessed increased demand in the Ely area and cared for approximately 400 patients and their families between April 2014 and October 2015. Patients in Ely predominantly benefit from care provided by our Hospice at Home, complementary therapy, specialist palliative care home teams and often attend our support groups. However, Ely residents can also access other services such as the Cambridge-based 12 bed inpatient unit, patient and family support team, pain management clinic, day therapy facility and lymphoedema clinic.

Your kind support enables us to fund our professional, compassionate and practical services and to deliver care, counselling and education which will help our patients to live well and their families to live on.
We have a holistic approach and a patient’s care programme frequently combines many of these strands of care. To supplement the NHS contribution, we are required to raise £2 million annually to fund the additional services provided by the hospice. The support of generous individuals in our local community, groups like the Rotarians, Freemasons and local businesses is critical to raising such a

As both sisters have also spent a significant amount of time studying fiddle music inScandinavia, they pull a range of influences from both the northern and southern European fiddle traditions into their own compositions and arrangements.
