IAN LINDSAY MAYOR OF ELY The theme in the Mayoral year now moves towards both celebration and remembrance. This started with the High Sheriff’s Justice Service, held this year at Peterborough Cathedral. The office of High Sheriff dates from Saxon times when the holder had very considerable legal powers. Over time these powers were greatly eroded so the post has become much more symbolic with no formal duties or powers. Today the Sheriff has a year in office in which he or she undertakes to uphold the ancient Office and to make a contribution the life of the County. They lend support to the monarchy, the judiciary, the police, other law enforcement agencies, emergency services, local authorities and the Church. The service traditionally marked the opening of the assizes, but today it remembered the tradition, whilst celebrating the cultural diversity in the region. In a similar vein, the following Sunday we held the Civic Service in the Cathedral where we remembered and celebrated the work of local government, and in particular our own City Council. Upholding his role, the High Sheriff took part in the service. Some weeks later we then celebrated in a different way with a relatively unusual event in which we said farewell to Marcus Pinion, a member of our estates team. He had worked at Ely cemetery for 21 years and had played a key role in maintaining it as one of the best in the country. Our estates team, is small but perfectly formed, and does a wonderful job in maintaining our green spaces, play areas and buildings to a consistently high standard.
As a Council we owe them a continuous debt of gratitude. Finally we came to the most important act of remembrance. I served for 29 years in the RAF Medical Branch, and many of my relatives and those of Suzanne served in both World Wars. Some died on active service. This time of year is therefore very special to us both. We have been involved in selling poppies and this year I have laid wreaths on behalf of the citizens of Ely both on Armistice Day on the Market Place, and on Remembrance Sunday in the Cathedral and at the war memorial. To me this seems to be the epitome of Civic Duty, and I felt deeply honoured to have been able to participate as Mayor in this national act of remembrance of our war dead. Now sadness can be laid aside as Christmas events and celebrations start to unfold. Cllr. Ian Lindsay
ELY CITY W.I. Ely City WI have been privileged to provide tea and cakes at Mayor Lindsay’s Civic Service on October 9th. The ladies served his guests in the Lady Chapel with a wide variety of cakes provided by members. Elyi Magazine Magazine || www.elyimagazine.com www.elyimagazine.com 44 || Elyi

BE A FRIEND OF JUBILEE GARDENS Do you walk through Jubilee Gardens? If so I wonder if you have noticed the changes that have been made and are continuing. The largest of these is in the planting of the Queen’s Wood; to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. An area, at Broad Street end, has been cleared of overgrown shrubs; a beech hedge planted next to our neighbours with some new trees. The Friends of Jubilee Garden have paid for these species trees which are supplied by Barcham Tree Specialist. Some of these are already in and the rest will be planted on December 14th and there is a display in the library of the chosen trees. To complete the wood, East Cambridgeshire District Council will add shrubs and bulbs. This has been an expensive cooperative enterprise but one we feel will be appreciated by the people of Ely and our visitors. 6 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
The Friends work closely with E.C.D.C in the garden with a working party each month, weeding, pruning and planting . In the past the Friends have undertaken various projects, introducing art, bird boxes and the play area. Some of the Friends are able to work in the garden, others raise money and all pay £5 per annum to be ‘a friend’ If you would like to join us please contact: Ann Laird ann.laird62@btinternet.com In the meantime please come into the garden and enjoy it. Pauline Sherwood Chair of the Friends of Jubilee Garden
A NEW FUNERAL SERVICE FOR ELY The East of England Co-op Funeral Services have extended their care and support for communities in Cambridgeshire with the opening of a brand new funeral branch in Prickwillow Road, Ely. Funeral Arranger Claire Needs, who manages the new branch, can provide guidance on monumental masonry, bereavement support and pre-paid funeral plans, for those looking to plan ahead for peace of mind.
Claire and her colleagues at the East of England Funeral Services believe everyone should be remembered in a way that is as individual as they were, and they know it’s the little things that make a funeral special. They focus on their clients’ needs and wishes; discreetly and sensitively. Every client is treated as an individual by professional, kind people, all of whom live and have mostly grow up in the East of England. They are proud to be part of the East of England Co-op and offer a local service to local families. When a loved one passes away, all arrangements are taken care of so families can concentrate on saying goodbye. From the way the flowers are arranged to the route taken to the service and the dress code of the guests, colleagues pay attention to personal touches. The new Ely branch on Prickwillow Road is open from 9.30am – 4.30pm, from Monday to Friday. Claire is available to talk about funeral services at the branch or on the phone on 01353 922000.
Funeral arranger, Claire Needs outside the new branch in Ely.
About the East of England Co-op Funeral services The very first East of England Co-op funeral branch opened back in 1925 and there are now around 50 branches across the region. As a local, independent business they only operate in the Eastern region and are owned directly by their members. Because they are the local Co-op, they work hard to support the community by helping local groups and initiatives as well as partnering with good causes and charities such as local hospices.
Here for you every hour of every day 14 Prickwillow Road, Ely

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership
Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long
standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,
Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

07476364458 LOCAL KUNG FU CLUB GRADING SUCCESS Littleport Kung Fu club ‘Hung Kuen Shaolin Kung Fu’ enjoyed great success at our grading held on Sunday 23rd of October at Littleport Leisure centre. We promoted eleven students to the grade of first yellow belt, one to second green, one to first blue, and two to the senior level of second blue. The Littleport children did especially well and represented the village excellently in front of the head of our school Master Ang, who travelled all the way from Manchester to judge the grading. We have been in the village of Littleport less than a year but have been overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of our students and their willingness to learn our unique martial art. Hung Kuen Five Animal Style is an ancient martial art with drills and techniques finely honed over hundreds of years, focussing on self-defence and fitness. Our sessions involve training cardio, strength (tendon, ligament and muscle), speed, power, agility and flexibility. 14 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
We are a husband and wife partnership of instructors, and have been taught directly by Master Ang, 10th degree grandmaster and founder of Hung Kuen UK. Our sights are now set on the annual Hung Kuen tournament and representing Cambridgeshire in sparring and forms. We welcome new students at any time, and train Thursdays at the YPL Performing Arts Centre, Littleport, children 5:306:30pm and adults 6:45-8:00pm. www.hungkuencambridge.co.uk

FROM THE OFFICE OF LUCY FRASER QC MP FOR S.E. CAMBS It is a huge honour to represent the diverse area of South East Cambridgeshire in Parliament, and I was thrilled to be able to meet more of you at local events and meetings this year. This has been a busy year locally and in Westminster, and I was delighted to meet directors and staff from many local businesses throughout the year and to attend the Ely Business Awards in October and to visit Ely College in May. A bit about myself: after graduating from Newnham College in Cambridge I spent many years as a barrister specialising in business law. The skills I learnt as a barrister have been invaluable in Westminster – whether I am debating in Parliament, scrutinising legislation, or finding the right argument to persuade Ministers to fund various local infrastructure projects. I am progressing a number of infrastructure projects across the constituency including the A10, the Ely bypass, and the A142. Significant progress has been made on the Ely bypass. Last month I had a meeting with the Rail Minister to press the case for a station in Soham and raised the importance of improving the A10 with the Chancellor. I am also campaigning to get better broadband and have regular meetings with BT and Connecting Cambridgeshire. Together with my neighbouring MP Steve Barclay, Councillors and local residents I am working to ensure our local services are retained at the Princess of Wales Hospital, and I was pleased to have the opportunity to raise the importance of our local unit directly with Theresa May at Prime Minister's Question time.
I am continuing to campaign on fairer funding for our schools, and in October I brought a delegation of headteachers from our local secondary schools to Westminster to put the case directly to the Secretary of State for Education, Justine Greening, to explain why it is essential we get better funding for Cambridgeshire. I later joined other Cambridgeshire MPs at a meeting with the Junior Education Minister, Nick Gibb, to make the case further. This year is also the third year of my inter-school debating competition. The competition kicked off with a day's training by the charity Debate Mate, kindly sponsored by Marshall Aerospace. An internal school round is followed by the final in Westminster, and I am delighted to announce that this year’s final is being judged by Lord Finklestein. Finally, I’m running a Christmas card competition for local primary school children, and the winner’s design will appear on my Christmas card this year. Invitations to enter were sent out to primary schools in September, and I’m looking forward to receiving many fantastic festive entries! If you have any issues you would like to raise with me, any local events you would like me to attend, or if you would like to arrange a tour of the Houses of Parliament please do contact me by email on lucy@lucyfrazer.org. If you’d like to follow what I am up to, do look at my website: www.lucyfrazer.org.uk or follow me on Facebook @FrazerLucy. I look forward to hearing from you, and I wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year! Best wishes, Lucy
