EDITORIAL & FEATURES

Hello Ely!

It is great to be looking forward to another New Year in Ely with you! I hope you had a fab Christmas too. 2019 certainly had its challenges here at Elyi HQ balancing work and life commitments, but also lots of fun as well. I get to meet the loveliest of people doing this job and also to stick my nose into everything! Thank you to Ely Rotary for inviting me and ‘him in doors’ to one of their lovely lunches in November, great company and food. I can’t remember the last time I toasted the Queen, but do you know it felt good. #dreamjob

According to the Chinese zodiac, 2020 is the year of the Optician... er I mean the Rat. (sorry!) Optimistic, energetic and likeable but also thrifty and a hoarder. One member of our present household is a rat and I would say that’s about right! Sometimes I can’t get up the stairs for clutter!! During the year we will come up to our 50th issue and also our 6th birthday as a business (in the present incarnation). It’s a bit like a marriage doing this magazine; it takes hard work, determination and patience, so I think some diamonds might be in order to celebrate, any excuse! Of course I will be buying my diamonds from a local retailer because if there is any message I would like to give you for 2020 it is to shop local and save our High Street. There are plans brewing to help our shop keepers and inject some life back into the city centre which I hope to bring you news of in the next issue, but meanwhile please make an effort to come into town and spend your money here when you can. Happy New Year and all the best for 2020! Bridget

EAST ANGLIAN AIR AMBULANCE As we enter another New Year its a good time to take stock and thank our many supporters. We are grateful for the generosity demonstrated by so many over the twenty years that EAAA has been operating. Thank you to Lanfranco, the AA and many others who conspired to get us ‘off the ground’. Flying under an alpha call sign (the equivalent of a “blue light” in the air), our pilots are given immediate priority over all other flights, ensuring our crews can fly to the patient as quickly as possible, but one area for concern for us is the number of drones being spotted in the skies in both rural and urban areas. Sometimes flying at over 1,000 feet, drones can cause a problem for our helicopters in terms of their height and proximity, as well as the unknowns – the experience and expertise of the operator. Flying a drone or a model aircraft is a very enjoyable leisure activity, but if you are the operator, please be aware of the safety rules and regulations surrounding their use.

hospital during the year – she had broken her neck when a gust of wind blew her and her instructor off-track during a parachute jump for a breast cancer charity at Old Buckenham Airfield. She was inspired to get back in touch and, with her daughter Rosie, visited us in Norwich earlier last year. Carol said: ”The air ambulance crew literally saved my life! I had fractured and dislocated my neck and was turning blue. Their quick actions and very careful handling have enabled me to make a 97% recovery.” If you are thinking about leaving a gift to EAAA in your will, please contact Conor McGeown: conormcgeown@eaaa.org.uk

We were delighted when EAAA patient, Carol Mellows responded to our “Gifts in Wills” campaign at Christmas 2018. Carol had been airlifted to

ALL WELCOME!

The Rich Tea Club for adults with learning disabilities opens its doors for the first time at 3pm on Sunday 5th January 2020. The group will meet regularly on the first Sunday of each month from 3pm to 4.30pm at the Countess Free Church, Ely. Members of the Countess Church and friends from other churches across Ely have come together to launch this new club to create a space for people with learning disabilities to experience the richness of life in the Christian faith.

Cate Allen, co-founder of the group, said “Rich Tea Club desires for church to become a more accessible place for people with a learning disability ... Everyone is of value and has something wonderful to offer. Rich Tea Club aims to be a place 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

where we will all be growing in our uniqueness and learning from each other.” Meetings at Rich Tea Club will include Bible stories and time to share news and reflect, as well as activities such as crafts, music, singing and drama. There will of course be hot and cold drinks and biscuits! Margaret Human, the other co-founder who has recently started independent living, just can’t wait for the first meeting. She said “We are going to have a cup of tea and do lots of activities – maybe some word-searches and jigsaws. We want everyone to come along and join in and have a good time.” The Rich Tea Club at the Countess Free Church will be a place to have fun, share faith and build friendships for adults with learning disabilities, plus any carers and friends. Meetings are the first Sunday each month, 3pm–4.30pm. To find out more call Cate on 07425650454 or visit www.countessely.co.uk

It is hard settling into a new life in a strange country when you have experienced as much trauma as refugees have. The 13 year-old daughter of one of two local Syrian refugee families wrote a piece in the School’s newsletter so that her classmates could understand the sort of childhood she’d had.

Ely RRC have been raising funds to give our two families the support they need to continue to feel welcome and rebuild their lives. As well as offering essentials like English lessons, school supplies, baby items and help with winter fuel bills, we also offer lifts. These are mostly for medical appointments, dentists and classes for the children. We would like to expand our bank of potential drivers for these, so if you can drive and have your own car, please consider signing up to our mailing list. Working with our Volunteers Our volunteers are really important to us. We rely heavily on volunteers for some of the services that the Council provides.

The Christmas Lights and Switch On volunteer team erect the Christmas lights and organise the Big Switch on event. Planning for the event starts early in the year. During the summer months the volunteers check the lights and ensure that they are all PAT tested. They also ensure that all safe practices for working and relevant Health and Safety documentation is up to date before erection of the lights begins. Five weekends before the Switch On event, the volunteers put the lights up around the City and decorate the tree in the market square. All the volunteers are fully IPAF trained to operate the two Cherry Pickers. While in use, volunteers ensure the safety of the public and do the traffic management. When in place, the lights are tested ready for the switch on. The City of Ely Council and the Christmas Lights Team are very grateful for the co-operation of the residents, shop keepers and markets team.

The Big City of Ely Switch on is also organised and run by volunteers. On the day, it’s a very early start with the team of staff and volunteers. Public safety and enjoyment at the event are the main priorities. If you could you spare some time to volunteer and help with the above in 2020, please contact: arnie.arnold@cityofelicouncil.org.uk The Friends of Ely cemetery are also looking for more volunteers to offer practical help at the Cemetery. If you would be interested please contact: arnie.arnold@cityofelycouncil.org.uk

The Environment Committee Members of this Committee represent all the Ely wards. Collectively we aim to nurture and develop pride in the City of Ely by facilitating a clean, healthy and attractive local environment in co-operation with the citizens of Ely, local businesses and other organisations. parish boundaries, notice boards, benches, flower containers, some signs, some lamp posts and lights, and bus shelters. East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC) also owns benches, lamp posts and lights and the litter bins around the City, and Cambridgeshire County Council (CCC) own the vast majority of the street lights and the multitude of traffic signs and bollards. Close liaison is therefore needed to keep these items inspected, and in good order. We also look after the war memorials in Ely and Prickwillow and are actively involved in restoring these in advance of next year’s celebrations of the 75th anniversary of VE day. We own some of the trees and green areas around the City, but again, not all, and we now organise the planting and watering of the City’s floral displays. The Committee is always looking for ways to make environmental improvements through working in

conjunction with ECDC and CCC in their services such as litter clearing; street cleaning; removal of graffiti; de-cluttering of streets; maintenance of signs and road markings; parking; provision of cycle ways; changes to street lighting; and traffic calming measures. We try our best to act as advocates for our fellow citizens by facilitating and championing environmental matters affecting the City of Ely. We regularly liaise with ECDC, CCC, the ECDC Access Group, Perspective, Time Banking, Speedwatch, The Cathedral Environment Group, the Ely Volunteer Centre and Neighbourhood watch. In the longer term we will be a stakeholder in the more local strategy initiatives to reduce the impact of climate warming. We hold a relatively small budget to further our aims, but currently the greater part is used in contributing to the CCC minor highways improvement scheme. Each year we can bid for up to two projects such as traffic calming measures, speed restrictions, road crossings, or the provision of cycleways. We contribute a proportion of the costs and the rest is provided by CCC. In the last couple of years this has enabled us to make safety improvements in Cam Drive, purchase mobile speed indicator signs, and get some double yellow lines painted in Dovehouse Close. Such gains are modest and require a lot of effort on our part, but they come as result of requests from local people and so represent local democracy in real action.

COULD YOU HELP AT HOME? FAMILIES IN AND AROUND ELY NEED YOU! Here at East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) we thrive off the generous support of our volunteers across all areas of the charity. We are currently recruiting enthusiastic volunteers for our Help at Home programme. The families who receive support from EACH would often also benefit from practical support at home. For them, spending time together and making the most of every moment is more important than getting the ironing done or painting the garden fence. And that’s where you come in. The families need volunteers ready to step into their homes and gardens and relieve some of the burden by taking on these household tasks!

The Help at Home programme at EACH is such a valuable part of the support service we offer. Charlotte Redmond, EACH Volunteer Coordinator, says: “I only started working at EACH a few months ago and already I’m seeing what an amazing effect the Help at Home programme can have on the lives of families. I’ve no doubt we should be expanding the programme to reach more families who need simple practical support to make their day-to-day lives that little bit easier.” The only thing you need to get involved is time to give! You can get more information by contacting Charlotte at charlotte.redmond@each.org.uk or on 07889 251385. You will need to complete an enhanced DBS check for this role. There are plenty of varied volunteering opportunities at EACH. You can visit the website www.each.org.uk to find out how you can support us.

field maple, and protected them with spiral guards and chicken wire cages against voles, rabbits and deer. Volunteers have kept the shrubs clear of vegetation, and they have grown quickly; recent pruning will encourage growth to increase the density of cover. Conversely the regrowth from the unprotected coppice stools has been slow or absent owing to browsing by deer or rabbits.

ELY WILDSPACE Nightingales in Ely Wildspace In 2009 Ely Wildspace acquired a 1 ha parcel of land on the east side of the Ely Sailing Club pit. An area of damp woodland with numerous mature trees, in the absence of woodland management it offered limited habitat suitable for scrub-nesting and ground-nesting birds. Following consultation with Natural England permission was given to coppice small trees and tall scrub to create two glades totalling around 400 m2. Volunteers carried out the clearance and planted the areas with shrubs, mostly hazel and

The main target in the creation of this niche habitat by Ely Wildspace is the nightingale, which in Britain is under serious threat. One of the reasons behind its decline is the loss of habitat. Nightingales need a well-defined structure of scrubby thicket to set up their territories, bare ground for feeding, and thick vegetation for the low-level nest. Nightingales occur in the Ely Wildspace area (usually along Kiln Lane) almost every spring, but recently they haven’t stayed to breed. We hope that by providing more suitable habitat for them we may encourage them to stay. If you want to get involved in Ely Wildspace activities or find out more about upcoming Wildspace events visit www.elywildspace.org.uk.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO RUN THE CAMBRIDGE HALF MARATHON FOR THE CHARLIE WALLER MEMORIAL TRUST? #RunForWellbeing The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust, a charity working to equip young people with the skills to look after their mental wellbeing, has launched a new campaign that encourages the nation to consider the benefits of physical activity on mental health. The campaign aims to raise awareness by asking people to share personal stories on social media of how exercise has helped them to improve their mental health, using the #RunForWellbeing hashtag. The #RunForWellbeing initiative recognises the growing evidence suggesting that exercise can not only reduce symptoms of depression but can also lead to a variety of other mental health and lifestyle benefits including: better sleep, increased energy levels, improved mood, and increased motivation and confidence to engage in leisure activities. A national charity partner for the Saucony Cambridge Half Marathon 2020, Charlie Waller Memorial Trust is offering 50 charity places to the sold-out event, taking place in March. Runners will have the opportunity to get up and active while raising money for a valuable cause, and will be supported through engaging and informative resources containing expert advice on training and looking after their own, and others’, mental wellbeing. The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust was established in 1997 in memory of Charlie Waller, who took his own life at the age of 28 whilst suffering from depression. The charity was founded to raise

awareness of mental health issues, ensure that young people are supported to recognise the signs of depression in themselves and others, and make sure expert help is available when needed. Through the provision of training and resources, the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust equips young people with the tools they need to take care of their mental health, and encourages those who may be depressed, or have other mental health issues, to seek help. The charity also trains and educates parents, teachers, university staff and employers to be able to spot when a young person might be in trouble and to offer the necessary first line support. The charity works with a network of over 40 highly skilled mental health trainers, who deliver training across the UK on a daily basis. Through the #RunForWellbeing initiative the charity is encouraging the nation to lace up their trainers and experience the benefits of exercise on their mental health. Members of Charlie Waller Memorial Trust’s team of Saucony Cambridge Half Marathon runners will be champions of the #RunForWellbeing initiative, supporting the charity’s awareness raising by documenting their training journeys and by raising vital funds. More information on running for the charity can be found here: www.cwmt.org.uk/cambridge-half-marathon-2020

Hopefully you all survived Christmas richer in the joy of the festivities and probably poorer financially. I’d like to thank again the terrific effort put in by so many volunteers led by Mike Chinery-Colyer to put up the annual Christmas lights and Ian Newstead, his family and his team for masterminding another amazing Switch On event. It was the fiftgeenth they have done and I think one of the best I can remember. Without so many volunteers and the co-operation of shopkeepers and others these events would not happen and we would all be the poorer.

A special thank you to the shops who brightened the city centre with such lovely Christmas displays and a particular word for Wood Green Animal Charity, Boswells and Milan Barber Shop for meeting our difficult challenge of a wartime window display. Eighty years ago many evacuee children were spending Christmas in Ely and the villages around us. It is heartwarming to recall that Ely alone gave shelter and homes to over 700 evacuees. These children came from the east end of London and many of them were Jewish. Just before Christmas I welcomed a small party from the Jews Free School to Ely and that ancient and remarkable school is now wanting to commemorate that period in our joint history with some permanent

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

A Women-led, Global, Ecumenical Movement FRIDAY 6TH MARCH 2020, 1.30pm at Ely Methodist Church Rise, Take Your Mat and Walk The World Day of Prayer is an international, interchurch organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers.

Come and join in with the local service in Ely, taking place at Ely Methodist Church, starting at 1.30pm (note earlier start time). Why not come along and find out more about the theme and Zimbabwe.

On Friday 6 March services will be held nationwide and worldwide on the theme of ‘Rise, take your mat and walk’, prepared this year by women of Zimbabwe. They encourage us all to reflect on the difficulties and unrest that have plagued their country over many years. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future. They encourage us to ‘Rise, take your mat and walk’ with them as they continue their often turbulent journey towards full reconciliation.

All are welcome to attend – men, women, young people, and children. Refreshments will be served after the service. Further info from Celia: 07810 782641 or see the website: www.wwdp.org.uk

The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 170 countries. It begins in Samoa – with prayer in native languages travelling throughout the world – through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, before finishing in American Samoa more than 36 hours later.

HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED WITH HIGH QUALITY TEACHING FROM TUTOR DOCTOR Your local Tutor Doctor office has been providing high quality, inhome tutoring for learners of all ages and stages in the local area for about a year now. In this time, students and families have seen the impact of our brand of tutoring, first hand. Our work makes a real difference to the lives of students, who make sustained and rapid progress over the course of the tutoring. What this means, in real terms, is that the students often end up with greater choices and life opportunities as a consequence of the tutoring they receive. Ours is a high-quality tutoring process, one which, we like to think, sets the ‘gold-standard’ for tutoring. It is a highly personalised service that we offer. It begins with a free, in-home consultation, continues with the personalised matching up of a tutor to the student, and is followed by regular oversight of the tutoring process to ensure that everything is going well. We have a clear process for selecting the tutors that work with us; all are skilled, background checked and passionate about what they do. Our supportive process and structures means that we are able to attract good quality tutors, so you can be sure of high quality, impactful tutoring, all of which is backed by our money-back guarantee. The Aeronauts (PG)

In 1862, pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) teams up with daredevil balloon pilot Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) to advance knowledge of the weather and fly higher than anyone in history. While their voyage to the very edge of existence helps the unlikely pair find their place in the world, they face physical and emotional challenges as the ascent becomes a fight for survival. Mild threat, injury detail.

Tuesday 21 January: 7.30pm · 118 mins.

Judy (12A)

Back by popular demand. It’s 1968. With her ex-husband (Rufus Sewell) demanding custody of her children and struggling to pay a $4 million tax bill, fragile Hollywood legend Judy Garland (Renée Zellweger) takes up a sold-out residency at London’s Talk Of The Town nightclub. Can she keep it together so the show can go on? Judy captures the waning days of a beloved performer. Scenes of drug misuse, infrequent strong language.

Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren star as a conman and a chintzy widow in a sparky drama of deception. Con artist Roy can hardly believe his luck when he meets well-to-do widow Betty online. As Betty opens her home and life to him, Roy is surprised to find himself caring about her, turning a cut-and-dry swindle into the most treacherous tightrope walk of his life. Very strong language, strong violence, gory image, sexual violence, nudity.

Sunday 26 January: 7.30pm · 130 mins.

Knives Out (12A)

A ‘pitch perfect’ black comedy whodunnit featuring an all-star cast. Described as a modern take on the murder mystery genre, the film follows a family gathering gone horribly awry, after the family patriarch’s death leads a master detective to investigate. Knives Out is a sly, wry and nimble homage to the murder mysteries of yesteryear, with a modern spin. Brief bloody images, moderate sex and suicide references, strong language.

Puccini’s opera of young love in 19th century Paris is packed with beautiful music, including lyrical arias, celebratory choruses for Act II’s evocation of Christmas Eve in the Latin Quarter and a poignant final scene. Cats tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life. With memorable music and dance, the starry cast brings this imaginative adaptation to sparkling life. Some thematic elements, peril and rude humour.

Crowns & Gowns at Ely Cathedral 1 February - 15 March 2020 We are very excited to tell you about a new exhibition ‘Crowns & Gowns’, which will feature amazing costumes and memorabilia from some of the most notable productions filmed at Ely. It was with much trepidation that Ely Cathedral welcomed its first major film crew in 2006. For the staff, volunteers and community, it was certainly a baptism of fire, but one we somehow survived with a reputation for integrity and professionalism, which resulted in ongoing enquiries from film location scouts. Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2006) was the first major film to use Ely as a location since 1985. With a stellar cast headed by Cate Blanchett and Clive Owen the production consisted of over 200 extras and crew, many of whom were on site for over six weeks with The Lady Chapel and Nave featuring prominently. The exhibition will include three stunning dresses worn by Cate Blanchett in her role as Elizabeth I and one of the outfits worn by Joseph Fiennes who plays Robert Dudley. The Cathedral itself was acknowledged in the making of the film and we were presented with an award for Best Film Location by Creative England. Several other films followed with equally impressive casts and costumes. The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) is based on the popular novel by Philippa Gregory and is the story of Mary, sister to Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne. The film starred Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson in the leading roles alongside Kristen Scott Thomas. The nave provided the backdrop for Henry VIII’s court and Anne’s Coronation. The exhibition features two fabulous Tudor courtier dresses plus the replica of the pearl ‘Boleyn’ necklace which Anne was famous for wearing in many of her portraits. For The King’s Speech (2010) the Octagon and Transepts were meticulously transformed into the interior of Westminster Abbey. This incredibly talented team of carpenters and designers had to ensure the set precisely emulated the BBC’s archive footage and photographs of the coronation of George VI. Filming took place over 3 days and

40 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

these particular scenes included the actors Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Derek Jacobi. The two costumes we have as part of the exhibition are the formal military uniform worn by Colin Firth in many key scenes of the film, and a dress worn by Claire Bloom who played Queen Mary. Macbeth (2014) was based on the Shakespeare play and starred Michael Fassbender in the title role and the actress Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth. Much of the filming at Ely took place over several nights in order to create the most suitable environment for the scenes. The Nave and South transept featured heavily while the Lady Chapel was transformed into the banqueting hall where the ghost of Banquo appears. Three costumes are on display from this film and include Macbeth’s principal outfit and one worn by one of the three Witches. The latest, and by far the most high profile filming to feature in Crowns & Gowns, is the Netflix TV series, The Crown. Once again Ely portrayed Westminster Abbey for two scenes which depict significant events in the life of our Queen; her wedding and coronation. Several extras were recruited to play VIPs and guests for the wedding of Princess Elizabeth to Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, depicted by actors Claire Foy and Matt Smith. Other prominent members of the cast, who could be found chatting in the Refectory drinking tea, were John Lithgow and Dame Harriet Walter who played Sir Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine. Crowns & Gowns will include several costumes from this production including the coronation dress of HM Queen Elizabeth and both her ceremonial crowns alongside the only official replica of the Coronation Chair. The original seat dates back to 1300 and has been used at the coronation of British monarchs when they are invested and crowned. The ‘Crowns & Gowns’ exhibition, located in the Lady Chapel will be in situ from 1st February to 15th March 2020.

1 February - 15 March A fabulous collection of costumes, jewels, props and behind the scenes images from some of the major Hollywood movies filmed at Ely Cathedral. This fascinating exhibition in the Lady Chapel will showcase some of the most iconic gowns and outfits from Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Other Boleyn Girl, The King’s Speech, Macbeth and The Crown

SOMEWHERE IN ELY Are you interested in the arts? Would you like to join a conversation about the kind of creative activities and artwork you’d like to see in Ely? With the support of Babylon Arts, local artist Amy Wormald is starting a project in January called Somewhere in Ely. She wants to talk to Ely residents about the kind of arts they like, have experienced and would like to see in Ely in the future. The project has been awarded funding from Arts Council England National Lottery Fund. The idea is that local residents will be involved in commissioning 3 new temporary artworks or activities that will culminate at the Isle of Ely Arts Festival in summer 2020. There will be some open discussions about the project at the Babylon Gallery in January – everyone is welcome to attend. Students from Ely College will also be taking part in the project. If you’d like to find out more or get involved please contact Amy Wormald on 07753 836507 or alwormald@gmail.com

Transforming Ely’s parish church for the 21st Century Do you live in Ely? If so, then you live in the parish of St Mary’s. It is your church. You have a historic right to be baptised in the church and for your funeral to take place there. Over the church’s 800+ year history the outside has looked much the same but the inside has been transformed many times, (for example adding pews, an organ, or heating), to keep it up to date with the needs of the time. Plans for the next exciting chapter in the story of St. Mary’s are developing – plans that continue to take care of our beautiful Grade 1 listed building, whilst adapting it for use in the 21st century. It is hoped that the work to make these changes will begin in 2021. The plans include our desire that St Mary’s will be opened up for community use during the week by: • improving accessibility for all • making the space 100% flexible

Everyone who lives in Ely is invited to be part of these plans to transform the church building by: • visiting www.stmarysely.org and the planned changes • sharing your ideas on how the transformed building can best serve the needs of our community by emailing btp@stmarysely.org • coming to one of the consultation events at St Mary’s Church in February. Please see our website or church notice board for details.

for worship and other uses • replacing pews with chairs • Installing new electrics, heating, and audio/visual systems • improving creche and toilet facilities • creating more meeting rooms.
