NSPCC - ELY
THE ROTARY CLUB OF ELY would like to wish everyone a Happier New Year and thank them for the support they gave to their Christmas collections.
The NSPCC Fundraising group here in Ely and the District had a wonderful response to their latest venture – a Christmas Tea delivery. To help involve the children, despite all the restrictions of Covid, we held a competition to design a message for the front of the delivery bags. We were fortunate for “Toppings” Book Shop’s support who gave us a book token as the prize. This went to the winner, Tom, for his lovely Christmas tree with cups for tea on the branches. In total the group were able to raise £1,059. This was greatly enhanced by a generous donation by June and Peter Waggitt and their team at “Absolute Sense”, here in Ely, who choose The NSPCC as their Christmas charity. There is talk of Easter Teas, so watch this space!
Whilst they were disappointed not to be able to collect from house to house as usual, they were delighted with the response to their tour of the streets so that everyone could still see Father Christmas on his sleigh. For those who ventured out and to all those who visited their static collections, whilst still maintaining social distancing, to put money in their collecting boxes they offer on behalf of all those Charities and good causes who will ultimately benefit their grateful thanks. Whilst they have not yet finalised the figures they should have in the region of £2800 to distribute. They would also like to thank Geoff Glover Van Sales & Hire, Ist Call Hire, Spotted in Ely, The Rotary Club of Ely Hereward and the Inner Wheel Club of Ely together with a small number of volunteers for all their support
LIONS OF LITTLEPORT As COVID 19 put paid to the fundraising for The Lions Club of Littleport and their planned Breakfast with Santa had to be cancelled, for the first time in 30 years, the club came up with an idea for the presents they had already bought. The club decided to donate the presents to organisations who could benefit and use the presents, so they contacted The Salvation Army in Chatteris, Littleport Foodbank, Timebank Littleport and Waitrose and donated the presents to them. We are not deterred by the current situation and will continue planning our events for 2021 and hopefully Breakfast with Santa will happen again, although the venues may be different. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
(A Women-led, Global, Ecumenical Movement)
FRIDAY 5TH MARCH 2021, 1.30pm at St Mary’s Church, Ely Build on a Strong Foundation The World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers. On Friday 5th March services will be held nationwide and worldwide on the theme of ‘Build on a Strong Foundation’, prepared this year by women of Vanuatu (located in the South Pacific Ocean). The beaches, coral reefs with fishes, lovely birds and fruits in the forest, all make the islands a pristine environment, but they are vulnerable to frequent tropical storms, earthquakes, cyclones, tsunamis and active volcanoes. Women, men and children of all ages are called to ‘Build on a Strong Foundation’ and live in unity, love and peace in the context of ethnic and cultural diversity like Vanuatu, and so many other places around the world. The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 170 countries. It begins in Samoa – with prayer in native languages, travelling throughout the world – through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, before finishing in American Samoa some 39 hours later. Come and join in with the local service in Ely, taking place at St Mary’s Church Ely, starting at 1.30pm. Why not come along and find out more about the theme and Vanuatu? All are welcome to attend – men, women, young people, and children. At the time of writing we are still planning for the service to take place in church, but depending on Covid regulations at the time, we may have to move the service online. Check latest details nearer the time on St Mary’s website: https://www.stmarysely.org/ Further info from Celia: 07810 782641 or visit: http://www.wwdp.org.uk

SLEEPING BEAUTIES It is without doubt that moths and butterflies are the most colourful and beautiful of our insects. They are mainly seen during the warmer summer months. They cannot control their body temperature and are more susceptible to their surroundings. So, the cold, dark winter months pose quite a problem for them. Butterflies and moths have developed several different strategies to survive winter. The Painted Lady flies south. Others overwinter as caterpillars, pupae and some as eggs. A few species though, survive as adults. These beauties can be found sleeping in our homes and gardens, sometimes in abundance.
Herald moth overwintering in Ely Wildspace by Bill Mansfield
We are most likely to come across Peacock butterflies, Small Tortoiseshell butterflies, Herald moths and surprisingly Hummingbird Hawkmoths overwintering indoors. We often discover them by accident in the shed or once the heating goes on, fluttering around in our kitchens or utility rooms. If found flying inside, removing them to a shed or garage is usually sufficient, where they'll soon go back to sleep in the cold. Comma and Brimstone butterflies on the other hand can be found in our gardens amongst the ivy, honeysuckle or in piles of dead leaves, perfectly camouflaged. Tidying our gardens can often disturb them. There are also many smaller moth species such as the Twenty Plume moth. We have recorded all these species in the Ely Wildspace during winter. The Peacock butterfly and Herald moth sleep in large numbers, which may fluctuate greatly as warm, sunny winter days trick them into waking up. Keep a lookout and maybe you will see them flying around. Or if you have a dark, cool and dry outbuilding, see if you can find your own sleeping beauties. Volunteer with BABYLON ARTS to help make the city a brighter place! Babylon ARTS is seeking to grow its volunteer team, to help brighten ely’s cultural offer by supporting its cinema, gallery and events through 2021. Claire Somerville, chief executive of Babylon ARTS explains: “After the challenges of 2020, we’re reaching out to our community, in the hope of finding new volunteers to steward at the cinema and gallery and support the events that we run, once it is safe to do so. We’ve got lots of exciting activities in the pipeline for later this year, and we can’t do it without extra help!” Babylon Arts, a 26 year old charity, manages the part-time independent cinema at The Maltings, which is preparing to reopen when Covid restrictions allow. It also runs a varied programme of exhibitions at the Babylon Gallery on the riverside in Ely and has plans for a range of outdoor performances and events this year. Claire continues “Volunteers have always played a big part in our work at Babylon Arts, however the challenges of Covid have had an impact on the number of people who can still 18 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
regularly help and so we’d love to welcome more people to our volunteer team. We will provide training for the duties that people get involved with and we also provide Time Credits for the hours that volunteers give.” Budding volunteers need to be aged 18 or over and the charity is committed to supporting those with access needs or who have never volunteered before to get involved. To offer your help or find out more please email office@babylonarts.org.ukor call 01353 616991.
ELY ROCK EELS GO MINI-ELY!
T
he community rock painting group, Ely Rock Eels(ERE) have been very conscious of Covid 19 restrictions over the year and, like all of us, have had to adapt. One of their most recent projects was to paint mini rock versions of Ely landmarks. “During these times, it has become even more important for rockers to paint and to connect with their community,” Fleur Patten of ERE stated. “Anonymous rock drops are discouraged now due to cross -contamination risks so we needed to focus on safe events when the folks of Ely could still see our rocks but weren’t tempted to touch them.”
T
ali Iserles, a founding member of ERE, suggested a Mini Ely event and, as usual, rockers flew with the concept, creating 60 works of art inspired by buildings and the quirks of Ely. Whilst posting photos of their growing masterpieces on the Facebook group, local residents got in touch when they noticed their historic houses being painted on stone.
V
isit Ely’s very own ‘Mrs Cromwell’, Nora, got in touch because she noticed her historic house had been painted; followed by another Ely resident, Stephanie, who contacted the group because her family had lived in the same house at the turn of the century. “Generously, Stephanie sent in a photo of her grandfather as a boy standing with his family in the Merchant’s House,” mused Fleur; “We began to see a family tree of the house and it became alive. Suddenly it was not just bricks and mortar that we walk past every day; it became a living thing housing human stories relevant to us all.” Tom Brennand and his family are prolific rockers but he was astonished to see his father’s bedroom painted on a rock. “My family ran the West End pub until the late 1970s and my dad had one of the roof windows.”
A
s well as buildings old and new, of course Ely wouldn’t be Ely with its infamous railway bridge painted by Sarah Follett . And Tali wanted to share her discovery of a nearby lost village that she had discovered on her running routes. “I love running and exploring trails and that’s how I found the lost village of Kettlesworth, a small settlement of another 30 people who worked on the land. I’m fascinated by local history and so I wanted to pay homage to it in the Mini Ely event.”
T
he Mini Ely rocks were in a safe venue in the larder of Oliver Cromwell’s House initially and now they are currently being displayed by ADEC in the windows of the Babylon Gallery.
T
here are plans to host them at the Sessions House’s 200 year jubilee next year, maybe on a giant map of Ely so visitors will be able to place the rocks at their locations interactively. “Who knows what the future will hold for the Mini Ely rocks and rocking once Covid restrictions are lifted but in the meantime, we’ll try to keep rocking safely for as many people to enjoy as possible. If anyone has any suggestions, please get in touch via our Facebook group, Ely Rock Eels.” www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 19
CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The last year has proved challenging to us all and the Council has had to change its way of working to fit in with the guidance provided by the Government.
ONLINE WORKING Following the lockdown in March 2020, office staff started working from home and Council venues were closed. Councillors equipped themselves to embrace the challenge of a different way of working, but soon enough we were holding meetings online, and even managed to hold a virtual Mayor Making ceremony at which Councillor Sue Austen was installed as Mayor of the City. The Council continued to operate its normal business as much as possible, with community grants being awarded, planning applications commented upon, improvements to roads and paths put forward for funding and many other routine tasks.
VOLUNTEERS We were faced with an unprecedented task of making sure all our residents were safe and able to access the support they needed so one of the staff members and one of the Councillors worked to bring the volunteer groups together to ensure that the correct protections were in place.
CHRISTMAS Although, sadly, the decision to cancel the Christmas Light switch-on event had to be taken back in May, later in the year, through challenging and changing guidelines, the volunteers and estates staff were able to erect the Christmas lights to bring a welcomed sparkle to the City. Our thanks must go to all those who made this possible and to the public and shopkeepers for their patience.
INCLUSION The Council reinforced its commitment to the inclusion of all people with the passing of a motion supporting black people in our community. The Council also agreed to support bus transport around the City and also agreed to work with housing developers to deliver a new community hall in North Ely.
EVENTS Theatres closed, meaning that Ely Maltings also had to close as did Oliver Cromwell’s House. Sadly, some staff had to be furloughed as a result. 20 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
City of Ely Council Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, Cambs CB7 4EG Phone: 01353 661016 Fax: 01353 667057 As soon as it was possible to open venues again, risk assessments were carried out and a limited programme of events started up, with tours and even a reduced Apple Festival happening. It was also due to the council’s decision to open the Maltings which enabled the fantastic annual Pantomime, although, due to recent restrictions the run had to be curtailed. Those lucky enough to have seen it will appreciate the fun and laughter that it gave during its short run.
CURRENT LOCKDOWN Ely has been lucky with relatively few people catching the virus, but towards the end of 2020, the infection rates started to increase rapidly and there were more people than at any point testing positive for COVID-19 by the end of the year. It is really important to halt the spread by following the instructions for the tier we are currently in so that 2021 can see us start to meet friends old and new and possibly return to meeting face to face again. Oliver Cromwell’s House remains closed under latest Government Guidelines. However, during the closure and behind the scenes, be rest assured plenty is being planned for when we are able to open! We have pencilled in dates for Ely’s unique Eel Festival Weekend, June 5th & 6th. We also hope to bring you local produce ‘food & drink fair’ August bank holiday weekend! So plenty is in the pipeline! If you wish to contact Visit Ely at any time, contact info@visitely.org.uk. Anna Bennett, Tourism & Town Centre Manager

“We do what it says on the tin” – EAAA is a rapid response organisation committed, ‘at the drop of a hat’ to attend all manner of emergencies whenever and wherever the need arises. Picture the WW11 RAF pilots and groundcrews waiting at dispersal for the call to come. Whilst no-one rings a loud bell we rely on the telephone to task our two helicopters to embark on yet more potentially life-saving missions. Dramatic isn’t it ? Yes, very much so – urgency is the watchword backed up by a wide range of skillsets, training and experience. As I ‘pen’ this it is grey and cold – we’ve had snow, high winds and excessive rain – so its good to hunker down in the comfort and warmth of our homes. Not our crews, doctors and paramedics though – they are ‘out there’. Since inception EAAA have attended 29,879 incidents – virtually 1500 per year. WOW ! This costs money – LOTS of money. We are coping but we need to do more than just cope. Demands on the services of all Air Ambulances, not just EAAA, are increasing. We are now also engaged in transporting seriously ill Covid patients to the best hospitals for their survival needs. Therefore, we do need to continue raising funds to continue our service to the community. How might you help ? Lots of ways – join our lottery, provide a gift in your will, or simply donate – please. We have just received nearly £2,000 – proceeds from three people making a parachute jump in Norfolk. Fancy it ? Get in touch. We will have another super raffle in February/March but, perhaps, most of all we need lots more volunteers. Its good fun, satisfying work in the knowledge that you would be making a difference.. Please go to our website to get in touch – there will be much to do in 2021- why not be a part of our great support teams at East Anglian Air Ambulance ? Michael White

Do you know someone who is struggling to pay their heating bills? Have you checked that your family and friends are managing to stay warm this winter? The newly launched Cambridgeshire Home Energy Support Service (CHESS) is on hand to help residents in East Cambridgeshire with their energy bills. The global pandemic of Covid-19 has caused an unprecedented time of anxiety, financial instability, and feelings of isolation. Two local charities, PECT and Cambridgeshire ACRE, have teamed up to help improve the health and wellbeing of households who are suffering from, or at risk of, fuel poverty. Cold, damp housing has serious impacts on our health and wellbeing. It increases the risk of developing respiratory illnesses – such as Covid-19 – plus cases of strokes, heart attacks, pneumonia, and depression. Right now, the health issues linked with fuel poverty are further exacerbated by COVID-19, putting an additional 200,000 households at risk.
Stuart Dawks, Director of Operations at PECT comments: “We feel that the CHESS project will make a real difference to households who have fallen into fuel debt as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We know the next few months are going to be particularly difficult for many people and we want to help as many local residents as we can through this service.” The aim of the project is to help households cut their heating costs by offering free impartial advice on accessing home improvement grants, fuel debt relief, switching energy supplier, signing up to the Priority Services Register and finding solutions to damp and condensation. Kirsten Bennett Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire ACRE said “As part of this project we hope to recruit local volunteers to be the ‘eyes and ears’ of the scheme within our communities, helping us to identity people in need of this support and advice. Please consider supporting the CHESS project by volunteering to promote this scheme and refer people to us for the support they may desperately need.”

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES AND SERVICES families. We told the real-life stories each day of what children with brain tumours have to endure and we highlighted why change is vital, we got to champion the children’s courage and bravery and each day in December they were our special hero.
Guinness World Record holder dubbed “The Marathon Man”, Ben Blowes, has completed the ultimate challenge of running 31 marathons over 31 consecutive days. The titanic feat, which took place throughout December, has raised £177,714 so far for Tom’s Trust’s 31 Stars Campaign to date, which is a fivefold increase on the initial fundraising target. The money raised will provide the vital provision of psychological and mental health care for children with brain tumours in Cambridgeshire and the North East throughout 2021.
Running routes across East Anglia, including completing runs around famous landmarks such as King’s College in Cambridge, Ben completed 812.30 miles over the course of the month, even continuing after sustaining a serious ankle injury, all while holding down a full-time job too. Ben has raised enough funds for Tom’s Trust to provide a full year of psychological care for 177* children suffering with brain tumours. This means that each child and their family will have full access to pioneering support, including: neuropsychological assessments, psychological support, support groups and school reintegration. Deborah Whiteley, Founder of Tom’s Trust said: ‘’This was a wonderful campaign for so many reasons; it was about grit, determination, passion and making a positive and permanent change to the lives of children with brain tumours and their
The funds raised is enough to allow us to support over 177 new families and children this year and we cannot thank Ben enough for his unwavering support and kindness; he was the perfect Ambassador for the families that we support showing courage and positivity in all that he did. The support of everyone, from social media comments to out on the runs, was amazing and the feeling of community was immense, it was one of the those moments in life where people come together and the feeling was incredible.’’
Tom’s Trust has pioneered a psychological care and support programme for children with brain tumours in hospitals within the UK and has a vision to implement this within every UK hospital that treats children for brain tumours. Brain tumours account for one out of four childhood cancers and are the second most common type of cancer in children. They strike young people when they are most vulnerable so many who recover have educational, mental health and physical challenges that – without the right psychological care – can hold back their development for years. COVID-19 VACCINATION THE LOCAL PROGRAMME IS WELL UNDERWAY! Ely North and South Primary Care Networks
The whole country has been living with coronavirus restrictions for nearly a year now, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. A new year has begun and the NHS has started the biggest vaccination programme in its history. Locally, the vaccination roll out for patients living in Ely, Soham and surrounding areas is well underway. The vaccine is free from the NHS; you cannot buy it and there will be vaccine available for everyone who needs it. Two COVID-19 vaccines are currently approved for use throughout the UK – Pfizer/BioNTech and Oxford/AstraZeneca. Both are two doses (some weeks apart) and both are in use here. Our local area roll out is being managed by the Ely North and South Primary Care Networks (PCNs). For us, this means six GP surgeries within our PCNs working together at two hubs to vaccinate all the eligible patients of the six practices. Our hubs are Cathedral Medical Centre and Staploe and patients will be invited to have their vaccinations at either one of these sites. As you will have seen on the news, the aim of the national vaccination programme is to protect those most at risk from severe illness or death and the government has introduced a priority list for who should receive the vaccination and in what order. Here, just before Christmas, we began
26 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
vaccinating those aged over 80 and in the past 2 weeks, we have started vaccinating those in care homes as well as frontline health and social care workers. Please be reassured, everyone who is eligible will be offered a vaccination at the earliest opportunity. If your GP practice has not contacted you yet, we will do when more vaccine stock becomes available. Please DO NOT call your surgery to book a jab. Staff will contact you when it is your turn. When you are invited for your vaccine, please do accept and attend for your appointment. Having the vaccination is one of the most important things you can do to protect your family, friends and wider community at this time. The national vaccination programme will take many months to be rolled out across the whole of the UK. Therefore, even if you have received your vaccination, you should still continue to follow current government guidance. This includes social distancing, wearing a face mask and washing hands thoroughly and frequently. You should also continue to follow the latest government rules on testing and self-isolation if you develop any coronavirus symptoms. Dr Katrina Young, St Mary’s Surgery

REDUCING THE STRESS OF HOME LEARNING It used to be homework that was a cause of many arguments at home, but in lockdown homework has been combined with the stresses of working and unsympathetic bosses! Here are my top tips for reducing the stress of learning at home.
CREATE A ROUTINE If you are also working at home then give them a slot when they can check in with you and times when you are not to be disturbed. Include breaks in their day just as they would get at school. Studies have found that during rest periods our brains consolidate and solidify learning.
MOTIVATE WITH REWARDS Young people need short-term rewards and teachers use these regularly. Use pocket money and screen time to give them an ‘attendance’ reward for working each day. Have competitions for completing work and include yourself in them. You may also need to consider the work set and find other resources that your young person will enjoy doing on the same topic. There is a wide variety on the internet and I give advice on this on my website. Liz Taylor founded Skills4Parents after a career of 16 years in teaching and 11 years as a head of maths. Her mission is to help parents with the education of their young people. Liz supports parents through a free Facebook group, resources, workshops and advice. See www.skills4parents.co.uk for more information.
COMMUNICATE WITH THE SCHOOL Be proactive in communicating with the school, education is teamwork! If the school uses a communication app then get involved with it, otherwise send emails or phone them. You can tell them the good things that are happening at home as well as any struggles. School’s have learnt a lot from the first lockdown and with parents and schools working together our young people are seeing how much we all value their education. Don’t have the expectation that it will be the same as school, but also remember there are other things they are learning too in this.
SEEK OUT AND USE GOOD RESOURCES Don’t try to do it alone and don’t reinvent the wheel. Most likely you’re not a trained teacher so look out for resources online and TV. JOIN FACEBOOK SUPPORT GROUPS (Here’s the link to mine) https://www.facebook.com/groups/educationsupport4parents START THE DAY WITH JOE WICKS https://www.youtube.com/c/ TheBodyCoachTV PARENT KIND RESOURCES LIST https://www.parentkind.org.uk/ Parents/Free-learning-resources-for-children BBC PROVISION The BBC are showing curriculum content on TV Primary-school programming, including BBC Live Lessons and BBC Bitesize Daily, from 09:00 to 12:00 on CBBC at least two hours of programming to support the GCSE curriculum on BBC Two.
