We hope you enjoy this double summer edition of the Elyi Magazine. It is great to have Mike Rouse’s first official article as Mayor. It has also been good to hear some lovely stories from individuals and groups this month. Thanks to Mary for sharing the details of her and her husband’s time at the Ely Cadets barracks back in April. It’s lovely when younger people take the time to acknowledge and honour those who have served in the past. Emily, at the museum tells us about Ely’s brewing history and we are pleased to hightlight how a number of local independent businesses are helping the community and supporting worthy causes. Madeleine has been very involved in the Ely Hero awards this year, judging a category and we were also pleased to sponsor the Neighbour of The Year. Look out for photos on our blog site and in the September issue. The Elyi has gone from strength to strength in the past four years as we transitioned into a monthly publication in December 2015. This was an excellent decision and has enabled product growth which has enabled us to feed back into the community on many different levels. We have decided, moving forward to focus our efforts on a bi-monthly publication from September. So, after the July / August edition, we will produce a September / October edition, copy date Friday 10th August and then a November / December edition with a copy date of Monday 15th October and so on. Due to the regular feedback we receive, we are firm in our belief that we are giving our readers, advertisers, not-for-profit organisations and local groups what they need and want from a community magazine. We will be contacting our valued advertisers in the next few weeks and look forward to exciting times ahead, we intend to be around with a new business model for quite some time yet! Once again, thanks for all your support!

I was pleased to attend the Civic Service at St Ives and back in Ely support the open weekend event at Ely Museum to help them publicise and gain support for their expansion and renovation plans. Cassie took on her first solo engagement at Lily House and Fen House thoroughly enjoying a combined lunch and meeting residents and staff.
ELY MAYOR
NEWS and ENGAGEMENTS Thank you to my colleagues on the City council and all those who attended the mayor making at the Maltings on 21st May, Cassie and I were delighted by the welcome we received as we embark on our year of office. Cassie and her brother Ben, were responsible for the buffet under the direction of their mother, who is a chef and catering manager, and I’m pleased that we were able to take the left over food to the hub drop-in at the Lighthouse centre the next morning. Right from the start the diary has been busy with a wide range of engagements, the first for me being a performance of Beauty and the Beast at Highfield Academy under the direction of Helen Pettit who does such a marvellous job with the Lantern Theatre Company. The Mayoress and some members of the council joined me at an Iftar meal with the Ely Muslim Association, while I was pleased to support the Rosmini Centre Heritage event at the Lighthouse Centre.
Two events involving young people were particularly enjoyable. The first welcoming students from the South Tyrol on an exchange visit to Ely College and then attending the Alconbury High School graduation in the Cathedral. I’m sure for the young American students being in the cathedral was something they will never forget, nor their parents and supporters, and I know local restaurants were very busy. Haddenham parish council were kind enough to allow me to attend as mayor for the first concert of the Isle of Ely Festival at the charming Arts Centre in the village. It was a delightful, well attended performance by the muli-talented Jeremy Harmer and Steve Bingham and I’m sure got all of us there in the mood for more exciting events during the coming weeks. If we can attend your events, either together or separately and support what you are doing, do get in touch through Marianne Pickering at the City Council : marianne.pickering@cityofelycouncil. org.uk or directly with me. We are at the service of the city. Mike
The Mayoress and I had a full day at the Open University graduation ceremonies in the cathedral and what was apparent is how much such an event brings to the economy of the city into hotels, bed and breakfast accommodation and the restaurants. Photos - Mike Rouse

ELY CADETS HONOUR VETERAN ARTILLERY MAN, ROY Ely residents Mary and Roy Neal recently enjoyed a lovely occasion at Waterbeach barracks courtesy of Ely Cadets. Roy is a resident at Vera James House and Mary lives nearby. Mary describes the events. “It started with a casual question in the local council office; Is there somewhere that Roy can display his silver cup?” Roy had been presented with the cup whilst doing his National Service in the Royal Artillery in Delmenhorst, Germany and Mary wondered if it would be of interest to somebody locally. Robyn, an in-house receptionist in the East Cambs Office suggested that she approach the Ely Cadets. This resulted in Daryl, the Cadets Commander, coming to meet Roy at Vera James House. Following on from this meeting Mary and Roy were invited to a buffet and reception at the cadets’ barracks. “It was a lovely buffet and Roy was delighted that some of the top brass within the cadets had turned out.” says Mary. The idea was that Roy would present his cup to the cadets so that it could have a permanent home on display in a fitting place. Roy and Mary travelled to Waterbeach on 13th April. The Vera James staff had taken great care to get Roy ready for his big day and he looked very smart in his blazer.
At the barracks, Roy and Mary were shown a video of what the cadets offer young people today, given a tour of the barracks and Roy even got to hold some of the guns! The cadets were very interested to hear all about Roy’s service and see some photos. Roy presented the cup to Daryl who said they would be honoured to display it in their silver cabinet. It was a great day for all concerned. Mary said “We were treated very kindly. It was really lovely to see a local person be remembered and respected in this way. Thankyou Ely Cadets” www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 5
Bottoms Up!
A nugget of Ely Brewing History from Emily Allen, Custodian at Ely Museum. Brewing beer has been an important part of the economy of the Isle of Ely for hundreds of years. Thanks to the rich farmland that emerged around Ely following the drainage of the Fens, the land is ideally suited to growing the high-quality barley needed by local breweries. The monks of Ely Cathedral were the first to begin brewing beer in large quantities, they made 3 varieties & strengths, though a visiting Archbishop did say of the weakest brew “it is so weak even the pigs will not drink it!” Many innkeepers, farmers and individuals also brewed their own beer to share or sell, a tradition carried on by many to this day. The monks of Ely brewed their beer in the brewhouse near the Ely Porta, now part of the modern-day Kings School It was in 1257, during the reign of King Henry III, that Ely’s ales first came to prominence when the King commanded the Mayor of Kings Lynn to allow the men of Ely to come into the town to sell their beer. By the mid-19th century most of the small breweries had closed leaving just 4 commercial breweries in Ely, the Waterside Brewery, the Quayside Brewery, Legge’s Brewery on Newnham Street and the Eagle Brewery on Cambridge Road Following a series of take-overs and mergers, the numbers of breweries in Ely was reduced to just one. This modern brewery employed over 250 people at its premises at the bottom of Fore Hill. Run by Watney Mann. They remained in operation until 1968 when a fire at The Maltings stopped production. The building was demolished in 1972 and The Maltings sold to the city for £100 so it could be turned into a public hall, a scheme which won national acclaim.
The Hall, Cutlack and Harlock brewery at Forehill, Ely was completely remodelled in 1930, and was considered to be the finest brewery for its size in the country.
Delivery drivers in the 1920s from the Cutlack and Harlock's Quayside Brewery. Ely Ales were stocked in over 350 public houses across East Anglia at the height of their popularity.
The Maltings was built in 1868 Ebenezer William Harlock as part of his brewery complex on Ely’s Waterside. It is where locally grown Barley was processed into Malt for brewing.
Friday History Group Mike Petty's talk in May on ‘Pickwick’s Ely Scrapbook 1838’ was the last one of the very successfull 2017/18 season, which has now finished. The next talk is planned to be on the second Friday in October, the 12th. David Oates is booked to give us a talk on the History of the Chivers’ Jam Factory at Histon, 1873 - 1960. 6 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

WHY I LOVE ELY Ryoko settled here from Japan several years ago. Here, she shares her thoughts on the city and tells us why she feels privileged to live here! When I walked at Cherry Hill Park for the first time, I remember clearly the wild flowers, a beautiful green field with ponies, the famous cathedral, a wonderful backdrop; the vivid, fresh grass-green, below bright blue sky and highlighted by history - I was speechless. How could I have imagined I would live in a city with links to Oliver Cromwell! I imagined how he had enjoyed this same scenery, stood by the Cathedral and walked these streets. It excites me; I feel so honoured to be here. There is much nature in and around Ely. From my first day here, I enjoyed the loud birdsong and at night, I was surprised to see shooting stars so clearly. My five senses had revitalised, to operate in ways I had missed in the years in the US. When I meet people, we sometimes just smile or chat, and it gives me warmth and happiness. Perhaps the Japanese and English are similar - we are both islanders. Ely is the smallest city I’ve lived in, but how special it is, and Ely people are so lovely. I am a pianist and privileged to give lessons to such good-natured students. I have enjoyed giving charity concerts here and love to fit into this friendly society and share through my music.
PROJECT TO DIGITISE PARISH REGISTERS Cambridgeshire Family History Society is pleased to announce an exciting new project which is currently in its early stages. Working in partnership with Wisbech and Fenland Museum, the Society is embarking on an ambitious project to digitise 32 parish registers which are currently in the Museum collection, over 50,000 pages and 500,000 records from Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. The Museum and the Society have had the support of the Cambridgeshire Archives who have loaned specialist equipment to support this venture. We will be working through parish by parish and, as we finish a parish, the images will be released and will be published on the website. These will then be searchable on the Society's Ancestor Finder database, available to download by purchase of tokens, along with all other Society records. This work is being carried out by volunteers and is anticipated to take about a year to complete.
Ryoko is available as a piano teacher and Japanese language teacher. e: ryokort@gmail. com / m: 07813593884
A full list of the parishes and dates is available on the Museum website at http://www. wisbechmuseum.org.uk//Archives.htm. Find us on the CFHS website, https://www.cfhs.org. uk for progress reports and updates. 8 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

CAMBRIDGE OPEN STUDIOS Each year more than 350 artists across Cambridgeshire open their studios over the first four weekends of July, inviting the public to see their work, find out about the techniques they use and discover the passions that inspire them. Our members include potters, painters, jewellers, furniture makers, photographers, textile artists, sculptors and much more. Artists open their studios for between one and four weekends, from 11am to 6pm. There’s an app for that! Cambridge Open Studios now has an app to help visitors find exactly what they are looking for and plan their days out. You can search by the artist’s name, medium (painting, pottery, glass etc.), and location. There’s also a button that suggests studios to visit nearby. So it’s easy to find exactly the kinds of work you want to see and to work out a route around a particular area. The app is available now for Apple and Android.
This year there are 87 venues to visit in central Cambridge and Grantchester and a further 134 venues in the wider Cambridgeshire area – including a large cluster of studios in Ely. Marion Curtis, board member of Cambridge Open Studios, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to see artists at work, discuss their inspirations and techniques, and to browse, purchase or even commission their work. “It’s wonderful that this year we have the ingenious phone app that allows visitors to find any workshops to suit their tastes and location.” So, it has never been easier to find your way around the Open Studios. Pick up a brochure from many local shops and public places or download the app! 12 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

depending on booking length This year was particularly special because not only did we hold our usual event, open to all members of Scouting in Ely and the Surrounding villages, we held it outside and had a giant picnic for everyone with games, singing and of course food. We also decided to try and raise some money for a local charity. The charity chosen was Kieras Next Step. Kiera, a young girl from Sutton was born with Fibula Hemimelia which meant that when she was 1 she had to have her right leg amputated above her ankle. Because her prosthetic leg doesn’t bend at the ankle she finds it very hard to run, and so is raising funds to help her get a new activity leg, to help her run and be more active. We decided we would like to help with this, and so in the spirit of all things silly, we had a gunge the leader competition. Who got the gunge was dependent on how much was raised. We smashed our target and managed to raise over £300 for Kieras appeal which was a fantastic result. Unfortunately not so fantastic for those who ended up getting the slime! Thank you to all who donated and will help make a difference to Kieras life. band work, which is led by our qualified instructors. We assist a small group or individuals in our boot camp which involves dumb bells and light leg weights to promote core balance and muscle strength.
The aim of the sessions. I have been working with our clients in Ely for 5 years now. We have two sessions on a Thursday at the Community Centre in High Barns. My aim as an Exercise Support Assistant is to relax the clients by reassuring them and motivating them. This sense of purpose mixed in with a good deal of fun and laughter helps to improve their mobility and thinking skills and all helps their progression towards their personal goals.
Why I do it. After all the hard work we sit together for refreshments whilst doing a fun quiz. There is nothing more rewarding in my job than when I am encouraging and motivating a client, seeing a person develop the belief that they can achieve their personal goals. The most important asset you can have is enthusiasm. If you would like to make a difference to any of our clients’ quality of life, this is the job to be in.
What do we do? In the 2 hour session we start with a fun game of bocce or target games and then move on to communication and memory games using fun topics. It’s a great way to relax. I then support the clients during their seated exercises and

An evening of excitement, tension, tears and laughter was held on Monday 25th June at The Maltings to shine a light on Ely Heroes 2018! Metro Rod Cambridge, based in Ely organised for the 2nd year running this incredible feel-good community event. The search for our local heroes began in March, nominations flew in and the unenviable task for shortlisting and finalising began. This culminated in 3 finalists from each of the 10 categories, these and their guests were invited to the award ceremony and the winners were crowned. The host for the evening was Mr Chris Mann from BBC Radio Cambridgeshire who said “This is such a brilliant idea that has brought the whole community together. It is so important to recognise and salute those who go that extra mile to brighten up our lives and help others locally. Meeting these people and listening to their stories is also very humbling.” With a 42% increase in nominations over the inaugural event last year, the community really got behind nominating their heroes. What a selection of finalists! Look out for the winners in The Ely Standard!
A MONSTER SUCCESS - THE SUTTON BEAST OF 2018 Sunday 10th June saw the crowds gather in Sutton for the annual running of ‘The Beast’. This incorporates The Tony Robinson 10K and The Mini Beast Fun Run and this year saw record crowds in both races. The event was introduced and hosted by ITV Anglia’s Donovan Blake and featured live music from local songstress Sophie Frear. The Mini Beast Fun Run is a 2.5Km multi terrain race and is embraced by the whole range of ages giving it a real family atmosphere. This year saw Ben Isaacson retain his title for the 3rd Year running, just about beating off Louis Beningfield
in the most exiting of finishes. The first female home was Dana Fraser with Elena Fraser not far behind. The Tony Robinson 10K is also a multi terrain race. It goes off The Isle of Ely and out into the swathes of Fenland into Sutton Gault and beyond. The sun beat down this year, making the race tougher than ever and everyone who completed the race did so well.

This year’s winner was Sutton resident Paul Waggit in a time of 35mins 23 secs while the first female home was three time winner Lisa Marriott (41mins 53secs). Between and after the races, the hundreds of participants and their supporters enjoyed a BBQ, Pizza, Desserts and Tea & Cakes, as well as taking part in The Scouts hamper raffle. The orgainsers said “We are delighted that the event was such a success. There are so many people that came and ran and each and every one seemed to have had a great time. This is a real example of a community coming together and we are so grateful to ‘Team Beast’ for making it run so smoothly”.

K9 Community Cafe The K9 Community Café café in Ely Cambridgeshire has become one of the latest cafes across Britain to join Starbucks Community Café programme. The new partnership will give The K9 Community Café the ability to place regular orders for supplies such as, coffee, tea and milk jugs to help sustain this vital community space. The K9 Community Café meets Thursday mornings 10 -12 at the Cathedral Centre Palace Green Ely. It provides a safe welcoming place for dogs and their well behaved owners! Or if someone doesn’t have a dog they can come and meet lots of other people’s. You don’t have to have a dog but you do need to like them! We are a community group run entirely by volunteers and regularly run school holiday activities, fund raising stalls, and mini dog shows and fun days. This new partnership is part of Starbucks Community Café programme that launched in 32 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
August 2017 with four cafes and is now being expanded to a further 16 cafés around the country. Working with Neighbourly, Starbucks has identified community spaces that could benefit most from the support of regular access to essential items. 2018 marks Starbucks 20th year since opening in the UK, and its work with all 20 community cafés will mean that each can continue to offer their local communities the space, support and guidance that is relied upon by many. Chris Kent who set up the K9 Community Café 3 years ago says – “This partnership will really help us keep our running costs down to a minimum. It is enormously helpful and we are honoured to be part of the scheme”

You can find the facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/thek9cafe/ Nick Davies, founder of Neighbourly, said: “Many community cafés across the UK are struggling with funding and the resources to stay alive, but the importance of them to so many people is undeniable whether they focus on youth, social isolation, exclusion or homelessness. We hope the support and donations will go some way in making sure that cafés like The K9 Community Café remain an integral part of the community for years to come.” Neighbourly is an award-winning social platform that matches charities and community projects with people and companies that can help. It uses technology to connect and enable communities, individuals and organisations to help local causes by providing evidence that engaging in local activity is good for business.
Ely resident, Fleur Patten runs the Facebook group Ely Eel Rocks. She was the driving force for a very special project in June to join with and commemorate the 1st anniversary of the Grenfell Tower tragedy which claimed 72 lives. As an act of remembrance and solidarity with the people of Grenfell and the people of Ely, Fleur and fellow rocker, Paula Woodruffe, painted and named 72 rocks, one for each known victim of the fire - and several more to represent those never accounted for. These were supplied by Sally Bibby of Bibby’s Turf & Landscaping. Sally has always been a generous supporter of the rock painting craze having, to date, given away over 4.5 tons of rocks for various different children’s rockpainting projects. But for this project in particular she got involved on a very personal level, together with staff member Katy, choosing and donating the rocks personally. They had to be small enough for Fleur to transport to London for the silent walk. On Wednesday 13th June there was a special ceremony held at The Eel Catcher’s Daughter, on the High Street where the rocks had been displayed for about 3 weeks. Helen, who owns the shop created a fantastic display with a statement, supplied by Fleur, explaining the rocks’ significance and encouraging passersby to see the rocks as people and loved ones, sons and daughters, uncles and aunts. Contact us for a free no obligation quote 01353 777909 Bishop David performed a short blessing ceremony to send the rocks on their way. “Placing a rock as an act of remembrance is nothing new. Stones are fitting symbols of the lasting presence of the deceased’s life and memory.” said Bishop David. The next Day, Fleur made her way to Grenfell. The Silent Walk was the focal point of a week long series of events to commemorate the anniversary.
Monday – Friday 9-5pm Rose Barn, Ely Road, CB6 2AB
Fleur commented, “I was amazed at the response. As soon as we arranged the rocks. Relatives of lost ones quickly assembled and held the rocks whilst fighting back tears. Others asked if they could rearrange rocks to put family members together; a mother and son. It was agreed that the rocks should be collected up before the silent walk began.”
“It wasn’t possible to see the end or the beginning. Everyone wore green. It was a sea! The green scarves had been handed out to everyone and it was a powerful statement. Residents hung them from their windows.” Says Fleur
It was clearly a very emotional event and there was a swell of appreciation expressed for the fact that that these rocks had come all the way from Ely. The mood of the walk itself was one of peace and friendship. It began about 7.30pm and progressed from the Wall of Truth to Grenfell Tower.
Bravo to Fleur for this initiative which involved Ely looking outward to another community and offering such a moving symbol of support, and bravo too to local Ely business owners, Helen Watkins and Sally Bibby for offering support and encouragement.

ELY INDEPENDENT SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY! We, here at Elyi HQ, love our High Street, It has had its ups and downs but seems to manage to rejuvenate and recover after difficult times. We are looking forward to seeing what springs up in The Old Oxfam shop, which is nearing completion - very exciting! and there seems to be something happening at last at the old Premiere shop next door too. Do let us know if you are the business moving in because we would love to give you a shout out to all the Ely residents.
Every January the Cutlacks window is taken over by a deserving cause. Past charities have been Pos+ability, which you can read more about on page 27, First Responders (volunteers trained to respond to emergency calls) and next year it will be Littleport charity, Branching Out which supports Adults with learning disabilities to live fulfilling lives. Another Elyi ‘Bravo!’ to Arabella hardworking team at Cutlacks!

Our independent shops not only bring quality shopping and variety to our High Street (and by that I mean all our city centre shopping within walking distance of the market) but do you realise how much they support our community? Local independent shop owners are passionate people; passionate about their business and the service and products they provide, but also committed to the community they serve. Arabella Chambers, at Cutlacks of Ely has a policy of supporting groups in the community. “One of the simplest things we can do is help local charities promote themselves through our shop display windows” says Arabella. “ Its a simple thing but it works”

FAMILY RUN CHILDREN’S CLOTHING STORE, LITTLE ROOS MOVES INTO ELY HIGH STREET
Little Roos is the latest independent family run business to hit our High Street in Ely. When you walk through the door you are greeted by owner Margaret Rooney or one of the family. It was Margaret’s idea to open the shop after shopping in Ely for their nine grandchildren and unable to find the children’s clothes they were looking for. “We felt there was a gap in the market and, with the family, came up with the idea of opening a shop offering bright, fun and individual good quality children’s clothing. We’ve chosen brands such as Frugi, Emile et Rose, Hatley, Petit Bateau and Angel & Rocket as we know these brands are both practical and really well made which we felt was important.” says Margaret. And they have done just that! The shop has a lovely contemporary, family feel with a large choice of children’s clothing for ages 0-12 years. They have a traditional ethos and currently avoid selling on-line as they prefer people to come into the shop, see their extensive range of products and compare sizing personally. It’s great to have another quality retail outlet on the High Street offering that personal service to shoppers. Clearly it is working as the shop has been very busy since its grand opening in April this year and getting rave reviews. 4 High Street, Ely Cambs CB74JU www.littleroos-ely.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/littleroosely

ULTIMATE FRISBEE Feel like getting some exercise now that the weather is warming up? Then perhaps you should give Ultimate Frisbee a try. Ultimate (as it’s often abbreviated to) is a non-contact sport which men and women can play together. To do this, he’s teamed up with Jon Evans who works with the Ely Outdoor
