WELCOME ...from the EDITOR Dear Readers, Welcome to the March edition of the Elyi Magazine. We are delighted to be featuring lots of new businesses and groups this month. If you would like to find out how to get in to the magazine do head over to our website and click on the ‘editorial’ tab to find out more. www.elyimagazine.co.uk We love to help small and non-profit groups but also offer really good opportunities for businesses to shout about what they do. We have a bit of a seasonal theme with both the Almonry and The Poet’s house offering ways to treat your Mum on Mother’s Day on page 19. Kids, it’s not until 26th March, so plenty of time to plan something lovely for Mum. Sarah Regan shares her enthusiasm for spring cleaning but if that’s not your thing the team at Ely Clean are ready to tackle all those jobs you hate (pages 26-27) As we head into spring there are some great things on at the Cathedral. The What’s On and the - very exciting -Science Festival Programme can both be read online on the Cathedral website or by searching on issuu. best wishes Bridget & Madeleine Madonna and Child….Flight A magnificent sculpture by the artist Jill Sim is on display in the Lady Chapel between 25th February and 2nd April. Jill is a large scale sculptor and the piece she will be exhibiting is called ‘Madonna and Child… Flight’. This particular work, which will be shown alongside some paintings by the artist, is understood to be reflective of the refugee crisis and it is hoped it will help draw attention to the plight of refugees and to the work being done locally by the Ely Refugee Resettlement Campaign.

IAN LINDSAY MAYOR OF ELY The Arts have been at the centre of Mayoral life over the last month, and will continue to be so until the end of the Ely Summer Arts Festival. I duly opened the excellent exhibition of Marc Chagall’s works at the Babylon gallery and was pleased to be able to purchase a lithograph that had resonance with our extended family. It has very characteristic colouring and has reference to a circus scene. All very Chagall, but, strangely, we have a half Russian daughter in law and the family nanny, who speaks only Russian, once worked as a trapeze artiste in the Ukraine state circus. I love these kind of associations, and many of my most treasured possessions have such links. Incidentally, I am trying to learn Russian with the help of a lovely lady called Vera. It’s a real challenge and despite 3 years of study, my bilingual granddaughter still falls about laughing when I try even the simplest conversation with her. As lent is now with us I am practising some self denial, and with that goes a severe reduction in alcohol intake. I always used to think that lent was 40 days and 40 nights, but in reality it’s 43, and the extra 3 days seems to make it stretch to eternity. I hope it yields a decent return on the investment in terms of weight loss. However, a much quicker way of losing weight is to give an armful of blood, and usually I manage that at regular intervals. However, the time before last I was told my
blood was not of adequate strength and I had to forego a session. The body Lindsay fortunately recovered, so the last session went swimmingly. Clearly I had been offering nothing but blood, toil, tears and sweat on behalf of the council but the Christmas break and the January lull allowed recovery. If any of you have considered donating blood but have not quite got round to it can I urge you to action? The NHS is always short of the precious fluid, and no drop is ever wasted. On the City Council front we are anticipating the ceremony on 9th of March to mark the official start of work on the southern bypass. Once complete the bypass will revolutionise the traffic flows around the Station Gateway, and presumably around the City. At the same time plans are in the offing to develop the area behind Tesco’s on Angel Drove. These are truly exciting times for Ely, but we also have to get back to basics. We are proud of our City, but over time it begins to look tired and untidy despite the best efforts of ECDC and ourselves. We will therefore be organising another City litter pick on Sunday 2nd April. Many voluntary organisations will take part, but if you would like to take part as an individual look out for fliers and other information nearer the time. Finally, in support of my charities, remember that The Mayoress, Artichoke, Queen’s shoes and the Golf Club are organising a fashion show at the Club on Friday 17th March; and The Mayor’s Annual Ball will be at The Maltings on Saturday the 22nd of April. Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership
Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long
standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,
Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The Big Spring Clean by Sarah Regan, Wife, Mother, Blogger & Domestic Goddess When I was asked to write this article I nearly exploded with excitement. You see I am a huge fan of all things cleaning and domestication. Kim and Aggie were my favourite TV personalities and I have all of their books. The day their show ‘How Clean is Your House?’ ended, I cried. But in this age of social media, I no longer having to reread my cleaning books for the umpteenth time, because there are so many fabulous cleaning and housekeeping blogs out there. In these fantastic collections of tips, ideas and inspiration, you’ll find a plethora of information to make your home sparkle. There are tons of cleaning products on the market, but really, you don’t need most of them. I like to use Forever Living MPD Cleaner as it can be used everywhere and lasts for months. It’s kind to the environment and your hands too (because let’s face it, if you’re making your house look lush, you don’t want sore hands and scraggy nails, do you?) My other essentials are bleach, white vinegar and soda crystals. Yes, my house sometimes smells like a pickling factory, but boy are my taps sparkling!
For smelly drains, pour a mug of soda crystals down the sink and follow with half a mug of white vinegar. Leave for a while and then sluice it with a full kettle of boiling water. The vinegar helps the crystals to fizz and clean the dirt, but also clears grease.
around the bowl and the job’s done. Takes less than 3 minutes. As for the limescale build up (inevitable in the Fens), just soak loo roll in vinegar and put on the bowl, then leave for an hour or so. Flush away and hey presto! Quick note here - ALWAYS clean door handles, knobs, flush handles and taps. These are party zones for pesky germs.
My shower is as white today as it was when we moved into our brand new home nearly 11 years ago. It’s because I give it a weekly hard core clean. I say hard core, but only in the sense that it works really well, not because it’s hard work! I simply get a plastic bottle of white vinegar, spray it all over the tiles and shower bar etc, from Everyone knows that cleaning top to bottom, and leave for is something you do a bit of an hour. Then rinse it all away. each day, so that it never gets Finally, get a squeezy bottle of out of control. The bathrooms, bleach and squirt onto the tiles kitchen sink and surfaces from top to bottom. You will absolutely must be given a need to have an open window quick once over every day. for this as it’s quite potent! You only need to spray the loo After a couple of hours, rinse lid, seat and rim with cleaning thoroughly and you will have a fluid and wipe with loo roll, spotless, sparkling shower. Not then flush it away, squirt bleach a bit of elbow grease in sight! 26 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Soda crystals also have amazing laundry benefits. Just add a couple of spoonfuls to the detergent drawer in each wash and not only will your washing powder work more effectively but your clothes will be softer and the washing machine will be spared the limescale build up. Did you know that nail varnish remover is fab for removing pen stains from leather? And that milk cleans ivory piano keys a treat? (Though you would need to wipe with a damp cloth afterwards to avoid the sour milk smell!) If you would like more tips then check out my blog... ( w w w. h e r e s h e g o e s . c o . u k ) where I talk about stain removal, housekeeping and most other things! FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT
February 27th – March 12th 2017 Fairtrade products have been in our shops for several decades and the Fairtrade Mark has been around for 23 years. That mark assures shoppers that the products that bear it have been fairly sourced and justly produced. Yet still millions of farmers who produce our food do not earn enough to feed themselves and their families. Once again in Fairtrade Fortnight, February 27th – March 12th 2017, the Fairtrade Foundation is encouraging us to think about the food we eat with the slogan, “Don’t Feed Exploitation”. Many of our favourite brands now have Fairtrade lines and many of our stores stock a wide range of the 4,500 products in the UK that are licensed to carry the Fairtrade Mark. But few companies dedicate themselves solely to Fairtrade in all aspects of their business as does Traidcraft plc, the leading Fairtrade Trading Company and Campaigning Organisation
10:38:14 Local Fairtrade Campaigner and 06/02/2017 Volunteer, Teresa Ely, has been promoting the Fairtrade message and selling Fairtrade Goods from Traidcraft for 33years. Teresa has also visited Bangladesh and Ghana and seen the changes Fairtrade has brought to farmers and craft workers in those countries. “We so often take for granted clean water, a plateful of food and health and education for ourselves and our families, but for many of the people I met that was only a dream before Fairtrade.”
Teresa gives talks and takes her stall to all kinds of places. You may have seen her at the Ely Lights-On. This Fairtrade Fortnight she will be holding Open Days at her home, 30a Barton Road, Ely, on March 10th and 11th from 10am to 5pm to enable you to see what Fairtrade items are available and to raise money for the campaigning work of Traidcraft. For more details contact Teresa on 01353 666905.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELY SOUP
24th March, The Maltings // Pitch deadline 3rd March Ely SOUP launched in March 2016 and is celebrating it's one year SOUP-versary on Friday 24 March at The Maltings, Ely. We're a community crowd funding dinner, pay £5 and spend a fun evening with us where you will hear pitches from three local community groups, charities, individuals or social entrepreneurs who have an idea that will benefit Ely.
Once we have heard the pitches we eat, talk and you cast your vote on the project you think should take home the £5 door entry. Simple! In 2016 we supported ten groups, and raised £715. Ely SOUP is run by a group
of dedicated volunteers and relies on the kind support of local businesses and venues. Do you have an idea that you would like us to consider? Maybe you have an event planned, but need support to get it off the ground. Or you need to cover room hire, or just need some new equipment for your toddler group. As long as it benefits the Ely community you can apply. The deadline for pitch submission is Friday 3rd March. Head to our website to submit your idea using our simple application form and to book your ticket as we often sell out! www.elysoup.com / info@elysoup.com
JOURNEY TO HOPE ILLUMINATION OF ELY CATHEDRAL AND CONCERT 11th March / 7pm / St Mary’s Church, Ely
Ely Refugee Resettlement Campaign is staging a light show and concert to raise funds to help Syrian refugee families in East Cambridgeshire. On 11th March, Ely cathedral will be illuminated with a light show, whilst a concert, titled ‘Journey to Hope’, will take place at St Mary’s Church. In what promises to be a wonderful event, the Cathedral will be lit up from 6 – 10 p.m. and it is hoped that many people will come to witness the spectacle and make a donation to the charity.
A spokesperson for Ely RRC said: “We are excited to hold the campaign’s first major fundraising event, and hope that people will enjoy the spectacle of the illumination, and the beauty of the music. As a result of our efforts, a Syrian family has recently moved to the area, and they are being supported to settle in and rebuild their lives in safety. We need to raise funds to continue to help this family, and others, in their journeys to hope.” For more information, please visit: http://bit.ly/21ghmqb or email elyrefugeescampaign@gmail.com.
The concert, ‘Journey to Hope’, will take place at 7 p.m., and will include beautiful, contemplative music and readings, which reflect refugees’ journeys to safety. Instead of tickets, donations will be requested, with a minimum suggested donation of £10 (but the group wishes to be inclusive, so will not turn supporters away). www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 37

3rd ELY YOUTH CHOIR FESTIVAL 19th March 2017, Morbey Hall, King’s Ely Junior
Since taking part in The Scratch® Youth Messiah in the Royal Albert Hall last term, Ely Youth Choir (director Andrew Parnell) has sung in two other concerts and is soon hosting its third Youth Choir Festival. It has invited 2 other youth choirs to join in a day of workshops and a concert. Travelling to Ely will be Vox (Parkside Federation Chamber Choir from Cambridge), director Helen Robbins, and East Bedfordshire Youth Choir, director Karen Beer. In the Festival, the choirs mix together to learn new songs and techniques from all their directors as well as Rebecca Duckworth, visiting director. Each choir also performs its own pieces. All the singers enjoy the day learning new skills from different directors, and singing in a large choir of young singers, aged 10 to 19. What results is a fantastic variety of music brought together into an instant concert at the end of the day. Visitors are welcome to join the audience at 5.45 till 7 p.m. in Morbey Hall, King’s Ely Junior, admission £5. After the last Festival concert in 2015, Rosemary Westwell wrote: Rebecca Duckworth conducted two pieces that exemplified the skills the singers had acquired in a sonorous, well phrased performance of ‘Steal Away’ and a lively performance of ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo’ that was indicative of the whole event – pure ‘fun.’ Go to www.elychoralsociety.com to learn more about the Ely Youth Choir and how to join in.

The Ely branch of the Littleport and Ely Timebank has officially started and we had a wonderful turn out in January. A few people from the Littleport branch and Re-imagine from Witchford also joined us in what turned out to be a very promising start to reaching out into a bigger community. In our huge catalogue of skills to swap we have many varying skills from sewing and gardening to learning new languages and even fun things like cookery! I hear so many people say they have nothing to offer, but we also need people who are just willing to give an hour of their time to sit and befriend people who wouldn’t normally have much social contact. All you need for this is an ear and a friendly manner! We provide DBS checks and are fully checked too. For every hour you put in you can also earn a credit to use yourself or take out as a ‘currency’ note where you can ‘spend’ nationwide! Please contact us for details. I feel so passionate about what we are able to offer and what we do and would love for you to join us to see how much of a difference you can make! We are running weekly on Thursday mornings from 9:30am until 11am in Starbucks, Ely and continue to have coffee mornings at The Adams Heritage Centre in Littleport every Thursday at 10am for anyone that would like to join us for a cuppa and a chat. There are very friendly people waiting and willing to speak with you, make you feel welcome and answer any other questions you may have. We hope you’ll sign up and become part of this adventure in our community. Caline Easey

PUSH BAR TO OPEN! A retelling of Little Red Riding Hood by the children of Littleport Community Primary School and David Learner who wrote it down in fewer than 501 words ‘Off we go!’ said Little Red Riding Hood. L.R. – she was known as L.R. for short – shut the door and headed to Granny’s house. She’d only gone five and a half inches when she stopped. Just like that. ‘Oh blow this,’ she said. ‘I’ll go to Granny’s another day. Today is a day for an adventure!’ Into the garage she went. She clambered on board her Fizz Mark 2 Magic Carpet. The garage door was still closed in front of her. No probs. All she needed to do was to say the password, the door would whoosh open and off she’d fly. Uh uh. Electric has slithered aboard the carpet. Electric is L.R.’s pet and he’s an eel. Electric’s whizziness with electricity was something that could come in very useful, as you’re about to find out. ‘Push Bar to Open!’ shouted L.R.. Whoosh went the doors! Schmoosh went the carpet and off it roared. Above the trees, over the forest, up up up into the blue of the sky. It was the most perfect day for a magic carpet ride. ‘Wheeee!’ said L.R. as the air rushed through her golden hair. ‘Wheeee!’ There was a muffled cry from behind her and she turned in horror to see that Electric was clinging on to the edge of the carpet with his teeth, his tail snaking out behind him like a bright green streamer. ‘Mmmmffff!’ said Electric. L.R. slowed the carpet down to cruise speed and hauled the slippery Electric back on board. ‘You silly eel!’ she said, once Electric was safely back on
board. ‘How on earth did you get here?’ Now you and I would both be surprised if Electric had said anything because eels don’t say much at the best of times. As it was, he sort of wumphed and humphed and coiled himself up behind L.R.. Off again they went, flying and flying and flying so high. But what’s this? The wolf has arrived at Granny’s door with every intention of eating her up. Electric has just received an eel-mail from one of his friends in the forest. Well, I did tell you he was useful. Electric tries to warn L.R. but she doesn’t understand. Oh my goodness. The wolf is getting nearer and nearer. Electric prods L.R. with a bolt of electricity. Bzzzz! Now it’s L.R.’s turn to cling to the carpet. Electric’s shock has been so powerful that she’s almost falling off. ‘Eeeeek!’ she says. ‘Electric …. Help me!!!’ Electric slithers over to L.R. as the carpet starts to descend but it’s no good. He can’t help. With a mighty aaaaaaaarghhhhhh L.R. loses her grip on the carpet and starts to fall to earth. The wolf looks up. The last thing he sees is Little Red Riding Hood fall with a crump on top of him. ‘Well,’ said L.R. as Electric and the carpet arrive on the ground. ‘You and I need to have a little talk, Mr Wolf...’ Fancy writing your own (501 word) short story? Closing date for Ely501 Competition: 14th April Entries to Burrows Bookshop or Mrs Simms More info from David Learner on 07749 760445
