An Attitude of Gratitude Dear Reader, Looking at the word “Gratitude”, my initial thoughts are how close it is to “Attitude”. Meaning we can control how we react to certain situations. We can choose to have a grateful attitude. Over the next two months we are going to be interacting with friends, family, and business associates. There are many holiday parties and networking events. This often causes a great deal of stress. I would like to take this time to offer a few reminders. First, we never know what people are going through behind closed doors. Let’s make the choice to treat our friends, family, and neighbors with grace and kindness. Second, we often treat strangers better than our loved ones. When you come home from work, remember why you work so hard. We do so to provide a better life for the ones we love. Finally, this month of “Gratitude” concludes with Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday, and Giving Tuesday. Please think of others. Our local small businesses and not for profits need your support. The owners are our neighbors and many of them will be working long hours throughout the Holidays. I would like to thank the community for supporting We Are Winter Garden and our Featured Business Members.

I

The Lo’Down LOVING THE LOCAL?

In the famous

words of Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Indeed, we live our lives second by second, and sometimes it feels impossible to take a moment to step back and survey what is right in front of us. The goodness. The lessons, even the hard ones. We don’t take the time to see how all the little pieces fit together, to see just how much we’ve been blessed and count it out loud. Gratitude is an interesting concept. It’s one of those qualities that everyone accepts you should do, but that we rarely talk about how to do. It’s sort of like saying you should “live in the moment.” Easy advice to give, but you rarely hear people explain how they actually live in the moment. So what does gratitude actually look like in everyday life? In a word: practice. Practicing gratitude invites joy into our lives. How you do that is a highly personal endeavor, but here are just a few ways to practice gratitude. Start a gratitude jar where you write down one thing you are grateful for every day. Keep a notebook at your desk to jot down things you are grateful for as they happen. Try gratitude journaling. Use Voice Memos to dictate what you’re grateful for on the drive home each day. Or encourage your family to share something they’re grateful for at the dinner table. Make a conscious effort every single day to tell someone how grateful you are for them. Do a daily guided gratitude meditation via the Headspace app. Now I’m not a gratitude expert. In fact, I’ve fallen off the gratitude train more often than I’d care to admit. But this season reminds me that the more I say “thank you” for the little things, the more I find things to be thankful for. Gratitude causes explosions in our hearts that ripple outward, enveloping others. And the more you tend to it, the more it grows. Best of all, gratitude is a gift that’s absolutely free. It’s so simple and yet so powerful. Simple expressions of thanks when voiced, written, or demonstrated can open hearts and start amazing conversations in ways you never imagined. So make this season more special by practicing gratitude, plan it with every get-together, sprinkle in every recipe. And thank you for reading these words. Thank you for being a community that believes in the mission of this humble, yet heartfelt magazine. And for that, I am so very grateful.

I

n the world of country music, emerging talent often digs its heels in unexpected places. For Jordan Mohr, that happened in the cozy acoustics of her parents’ bathtub, where her voice first found its wings. Her journey into country music, an unexpected turn from her musical theater beginnings, has brought her to one of the biggest moments in her career: the Josie Awards, hosted at the iconic Grand

Ole Opry in Nashville. With her newest song release, “Break Up with Myself,” and the support of her team, 19-year-old Jordan is poised to make a significant mark on the country music scene. At the heart of her success lies a crucial element—her collaboration with the Dreamwalker Music Evolution (DME), a team that has played a pivotal role in shaping her career. Founded

by Michael and Caroline Walker, DME has not only transformed her music but also her outlook on the industry. “Working with DME has been a wild ride,” Jordan enthuses. “We’ve become a family.” Michael, with his expert guitar skills, has played an important role in helping Jordan hone her craft and fast-track her progress as a proficient guitarist. Meanwhile, Caroline, a lyrical genius, contributes by suggesting compelling song concepts and refining lyrics, making Jordan’s music relatable and resonant with her audience. Together, they’ve been the driving force behind

her diverse music catalog, from the edgy and electric “Haunted House” to the bass-driven “Smoking Gun,” and even the light-hearted “Holiday Boyfriend.” DME’s expertise has allowed Jordan to experiment with different sounds and styles, setting her apart and making her music accessible to a wide range of listeners.“I always leave the studio on cloud nine, every week for two years. I never get sick of it,” Jordan says. As Jordan’s musical journey continues, her most recent song release marks a departure from her usual sound, demonstrating her versatility

as an artist. However, the pinnacle of her year is undoubtedly the Josie Awards. At this event, Jordan graced the stage, forging connections with fellow musicians at the revered Grand Ole Opry. This experience has been nothing short of transformative, providing her with fresh insights and renewed motivation to push her musical boundaries. Whether or not she walked away with an award, Jordan remains grounded and grateful for her musical journey, with her sights set on sharing her music with the world. Upon her return from Nashville, Jordan reflects,

“The Josie Awards were beautiful! Everyone was dressed to the nines. Although I didn’t walk away with any awards, I’m incredibly honored to have been nominated.” In a world where dreams are often deferred or abandoned, Jordan’s story is a testament to the power of unwavering determination, gratitude, and the unshakable belief that when you follow your heart, you’re already living the dream. “Being rich and famous isn’t my end goal. As long as I can make music for the rest of my life, I’ll be happy. Because of music, I fully know who I am.”

CHARITABLE SPOTLIGHT

Shepherd’s Hope

In Central Florida, where healthcare costs can be crippling for the uninsured, Shepherd’s Hope emerges as a lifeline. This nonprofit organization offers free healthcare, transforming lives in profound ways. Meet William Rose, whose life took a remarkable turn thanks to Shepherd’s Hope. William’s journey began with a desperate search for affordable healthcare. After losing his job and health insurance, he faced staggering private insurance costs. A friend mentioned Shepherd’s Hope, leading William to them in his time

of need. Before Shepherd’s Hope, William battled severe stomach pain, fever, and fatigue. Receiving the misdiagnosis of a minor ailment, he grew progressively worse. At Shepherd’s Hope, he received a life-saving diagnosis. The dedicated medical team’s intervention saved his life and provided him a new lease on life. William says, “When I first saw the specialist, I told him I couldn’t pay. He said, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ Those four words meant the world to me.” Shepherd’s Hope isn’t just about medical

care; it’s about compassion. Volunteers cared for William’s emotional well-being, allowing him to focus on his family and to rebuild his life without financial burdens. Shepherd’s Hope even assisted him in finding affordable insurance upon re-entering the workforce. Today, William passionately advocates for Shepherd’s Hope, emphasizing its lifesaving mission. He reflects, “I was merely getting by. Now, I live. I can provide for my family, and as a man, nothing is more important. Don’t wait until your health becomes life-threatening— go to Shepherd’s Hope right away.” Shepherd’s Hope offers more than healthcare; it offers hope and resilience, empowering individuals like William to thrive. It’s a corroboration of the community’s power to make a difference, offering healing and second chances.

LOCAL HISTORY

West Orange Junior Service League For over eight decades, the West Orange Junior Service League (WOJSL) has been a steadfast source of support in West Orange County. Established in 1936 as the Winter Garden Welfare League, this enduring group of women has consistently demonstrated their commitment to uplifting the

local community. In its early years, the league played a pivotal role in founding a day nursery for underprivileged children, caring for over 70 youngsters for nearly two decades. When financial constraints led to the nursery’s closure, WOJSL shifted its focus to support the construction of West Orange Memorial Hospital, a partnership that remains to this day. The league’s philanthropic efforts encompass scholarship programs, community outreach, and partnerships with local organizations. These women invest countless hours each year, embodying the spirit of community service, etching a lasting impact. The annual Debutante Ball, inaugurated in 1968, symbolizes their commitment to nurturing the next generation of community leaders. In addition to their extensive endeavors, the WOJSL annually hosts a lively event that brings the community together: the Golf Cart Parade. Scheduled on December 2nd this year, the Golf Cart Parade has become a cherished local tradition that lights up the holiday season. It’s a heartwarming display of creativity and community spirit that draws participants and spectators from all around West Orange County.

Tails to Tell Ellie

Husky, 12 years My life, like yours, has had its ups and downs. As an old gal at the golden age of 12, I’ve got my fair share of stories. My life has been a rollercoaster, with five different homes, a dark past as a bait dog, and a rescue from a kill shelter in South Georgia. But don’t let that ruff start fool you; I’m a survivor. I found my forever family here in Winter Garden. Mom adopted me despite my age and battle scars—a missing ear, half a tail, and a few missing toes. A lot of other dogs would have given up, but not me! Dad included me in his proposal to mom, and I barked a resounding “yes”! Now, I’m living the dream, exploring and receiving endless pets from my adoring fans—and let’s be honest, that’s everyone. My charm has earned me the nickname “Bunchie” for my bunches of love. Life has taught me that no matter how many times you stumble, there’s always a chance to find love and happiness. If you spot me around, stop and say hi! I’ll even take a pet . Fast forward to September 2023, 18 months later, and Karem is sitting at a table at Loop Cafe, nibbling on an acai bowl, when she shares this: “I forgot what fun is.” While delight and pleasure were the impetus behind The Modern Host, the brick-and-mortar version of Karem’s wildly successful blog and pop-up market, they also are the very reason she chose to shutter those doors for good. “At the end of the day, the opportunity cost of running a small business was too high,” she says with a sigh. “I underestimated the amount of work and the amount of sacrifice that it required, and it took a toll on me. Physically, mentally, emotionally. It was just too much.” The reality of running a food-related small business looks something like this: Missing your daughter’s entire senior year activities because you had to be at the shop. Saying no to weekend invitations from friends and Bunco nights because purchasing and quotes needed to be handled and your marketing inbox is a

Staring at a Christmas tree, in September, because you never had the time or energy to take it down. No weekend getaways with your husband. No holidays off. Karem says, “I did everything from my social media to my marketing, sourcing products, making purchasing, scheduling, managing employees, invoicing, building a website... I was working 70-80 hour weeks, without a break. From the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed, you’re connected, responding to quotes, emails, messages, whatever. And that’s not even doing the rest of the work the shop required:interacting with customers, prepping food. The amount of effort I was giving was just not worth my sanity and physical wellbeing.” And the hostess with the mostest, doesn’t even cook anymore. “I’ve lost all the joy of it,” she says. “I see all the Facebook memories of the home-made meals I cooked for my family and the parties and events I used to host at home. I don’t even remember that person.”

Karem’s husband, JP, a local lawyer and CPA, finally intervened and demanded that they take a vacation to celebrate their daughter’s high school graduation. In June 2023, nearly 16 months into the business, they took off and visited Spain, Turkey and Greece. Those two weeks away from the business changed her entire perspective. “I felt alive again,” she says. “I tasted, I experienced, I reveled in the beauty. And the sleep! Oh my goodness … the sleep. When we got home, I didn’t want to go back to work. My body, my mind, I was just done.” So she and JP hatched an exit strategy, and Karem began looking for a job a few weeks later. When she broke the news on social media, there was a collective gasp among fans, followers, and friends: “After much consideration and reflection, we have made the decision to close our doors permanently. This decision has not been taken lightly, but it is deeply personal, and we strongly believe it’s the right course of action at this time.” On September 30, she locked the doors for the very last time. And on October 9, Karem returned to her legal roots, starting a new career as the head of the Employee Relations team for a global company

Q

Is orthodontics just about straightening teeth?

There’s so much more to orthodontics than simply straightening teeth! I call my practice Artful Orthodontics because I believe orthodontia truly is an art. You need an eye for detail. For example, the front teeth should be longer than the teeth beside them, but not too long. The curvature of the smile should mimic the curve of the lower lip. It all adds up. I like to focus my practice on innovations and technology. The biggest breakthrough in my field came in 2019 when an orthodontist in Massachusetts created LightForce braces. Unlike braces 30

I get asked all the time if you are ever too old for braces, and the easy answer is no …I recently treated a woman who is 83 years young!

The Local WI N TE R G AR DE N

that use a standard prescription based on averages, LightForce braces use CAD software and 3-D printing to create brackets that are a custom fit for YOUR teeth. As a result, we can get better results with a significant reduction in treatment time! And that’s true for any age, whether you are 8 or 80. In fact, I get asked all the time if you are ever too old for braces, and the easy answer is no. I recently treated a woman who is 83 years young, after she’d been told she was too old by another orthodontist. As long as it is dentally healthy, you can absolutely

PR O MOT IO NAL F E AT U RE

get the smile you always wanted, no matter what your age. And the bonus—initial consultations are no charge! The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a consult starting at age 7. Still, teens and young adults are the biggest part of my practice. I hear from parents all the time who are concerned because their child has spaces between their baby teeth. If you are worried, definitely come see us, but here’s a hint—spaces in your child’s baby teeth can be a very good sign. Permanent teeth are much larger and will need the room when they come in!

How active or passive should your investments be managed?

Active and passive are two different strategies investment advisers use to help their clients achieve their financial goals. I’m an Active Investment Portfolio Manager and here’s why: Active investment portfolio managers make timely buy and sell decisions about the holdings in a client’s portfolio based on market trends, economic changes, political events, and other factors that may affect an asset’s performance. They also achieve other broadbased objectives, such as risk management and income generation.

The beauty of active management is that it offers opportunities to capitalize on mispriced assets, take advantage of short-term fluctuations, and exploit market inefficiencies. Passive management, by contrast, simply replicates the holdings of a predetermined asset allocation. Let’s look at the 2022 bond sell-off to help you better understand active and passive with a real-world example. In 2022, the Fed increased interest rates rapidly and often, which caused bond prices to plunge. Passive investment

managers would have been stuck with depreciating bonds in their portfolios. Active portfolio managers, on the other hand, would have explored other less interest rate-sensitive assets such as cash or T-Bills and made adjustments. The point is, active portfolio managers had options and could react to the situation in any number of different ways. What’s the downside, you ask? Good question. Active investment can involve higher costs, such as fees, commissions, taxes, and trading expenses. If your account is subject to trad-

PR O MOT IO NAL F E AT U RE

ing fees or commissions, ask your investment advisor before opting for active management. Our clients are not charged trading fees or commissions at IQ Portfolios. Instead, trading costs are included in our investment advisory and custody platform fees. In my opinion, the benefits of active management far outweigh its potential drawbacks. I have greater control over my clients’ investments with strategic customization and targeted market participation. For my clients and for me, it simply makes the most sense.

Have your own questions? Ask the Expert!

Q

Is it time for a second opinion?

Absolutely! It never hurts to get a fresh set of eyes on a problem. For example, many who take medications regularly for chronic conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, fibromyalgia, and others, have been taking that medication for a while—and taking it without question. It’s what you do, right? A statin for cholesterol. A beta blocker for blood pressure. Insulin for diabetes … What if you could get off those meds? The problem is, most medications used for chronic conditions mask 32

symptoms instead of addressing the root causes of their conditions. What’s worse, people are led to believe genetics is the culprit and they are doomed to deal with their disease. Which is why second opinions are so valuable. Most people can reverse their chronic diseases, or at least improve their conditions, with better options. Patients need to understand why they have their problem in the first place. And then I show them how we can beat it back. There is nothing like the look on a patient’s face who’s able

PR O MOT IO NAL F E AT U RE

to quit a medication because they just don’t need it anymore. We high five as they’re leaving the office.” But are they cured? Absolutely. If we base it on the numbers—the same numbers that led to the original diagnosis—and we get those new numbers well below the original and we eliminate the need for medications altogether, is it a cure? I would say yes. But at the very least, we made an extremely dramatic improvement in that person’s life. Wouldn’t you?

Q

What are the best traits to look for in an accounting firm?

Choosing the right accountant for your business is like choosing a new business partner. This person handles one of the most important assets of your business and life: your finances. In fact, perhaps no other business relationship has such potential to pay off. A good accountant can be your company’s financial partner for life—with intimate knowledge of everything from how you’re going to finance your next forklift to how you’re going to finance your daughter’s college education. It starts with big picture

vision. Yes, your business bottom line is important, but a really great accounting firm will help make the kind of changes that not only allow your business to thrive, but that it flows to your personal life as well. Most accounting firms offer tax and auditing services. But what about bookkeeping? Management consulting? Estate planning? Profit First? Will the accountant help you design and implement financial information systems? The right accountant will go beyond tax preparation and work on the elements that

We pride ourselves on being real, down-to-earth, friendly, and trustworthy. There’s no hidden agenda, hidden fees, or BS. We don’t want that in our business; why should you want that in yours? What makes a luxury hotel?

From the very beginning, we were determined to create a one-of-a-kind hotel experience truly deserving of its luxury reputation. We wanted a hotel that stood apart in Orlando’s crowded hospitality sector—and what better way than to start with the name itself. ette stands for earthy, true, timeless, elegant. Every decision we made from that point was based upon those four concept pillars, from architecture to glassware choices; services to brand names. We believe a true luxury hotel experience begins the moment you enter the property. All your senses become engaged by what you see and hear, of course, but taste, touch, and smell are just as important. Maybe even more so. Taste is the obvious starting point for us at ette.

Executive Chef Akira Back delivers luxury in spades. He is a Michelin star recipient who has opened over 20 restaurants in countries around the world. At Salt & The Cellar, Chef Back takes taste to places most diners will never even approach with his innovative fusion of Asian and modern cuisines! Step up to the Fragrance Bar at ette and take your sense of smell on vacation through its collection of unique, exclusive perfumes. Le Labo is an special favorite and its delicate fragrance permeates all the common areas in the hotel, as well as the shampoos, soaps, and conditioners in every guest room. Speaking of guest rooms, the elegant, relaxing, European vibe addresses every creature comfort our guests need, while the Suites go above and beyond with

Have your own questions? Ask the Expert!

Q

Do you really need a tax advisor to do your taxes?

No, my job is not all about filling out tax forms and schedules to meet that April 15 filing date most Americans dread and many put off to the last minute. I am a tax advisor, not a tax preparer. It’s not about money and taxes at all for me. It’s about people. So, I’ve made it my goal to share what I know about taxes, how to think about them, plan for them, and to use every hidden little tidbit in our tax code to protect my clients and get them every penny they deserve. It is a job only a professional can do well. Not your uncle

who always does his own taxes and gets money back. And not that software you bought online. Here’s why. Our tax code is bloated and full of confusion. As of 2022, it stood at around 37.5 million words spread over 6,871 pages. Add in accompanying regulations and guidance and it swells to 75,000 pages! What are the odds that you (or your uncle) are doing them correctly? I’ll just state the obvious—not very good. To compound the problem, you may never know how you’re doing—until the IRS brings it your attention.

Every year, people cost themselves thousands because they miss writeoffs, new regulations, and loopholes— because they didn’t know.

PR O MOT IO NAL F E AT U RE

And that’s a bad day on anyone’s calendar. A day your lucky uncle probably won’t stop by for dinner. I tell all my clients “you don’t know what you don’t know.” They’re interested in saving money. How do I save more money on my taxes? is the number one question I get. I’m more interested in protecting them and saving them money. That is the number one reason to use a tax advisor—for protection. Your taxes will be done correctly and for once, you’ll know it. Plus, you’ll have backup should the IRS ever come to call.

Q

Why use a travel agent?

Saving time and money are two of the obvious reasons, but the most significant may simply be you don’t know what you don’t know. For example, I spent more than 30 years in hotel management. I learned the ins and outs of every reservations system in use, and when I transitioned into travel, I brought that knowledge with me. I have insider knowledge on how the cruise lines work, what to look for in a hotel, details about traveling to other countries. I had a client recently who booked a trip to Switzerland, Austria, and 38

Germany. They especially wanted to visit Vienna for its small town/village feel, but I knew what they really wanted they’d find in Salzburg. That’s why I talk at length with clients to understand what they really want before making any reservations. I ask what hotels they usually frequent and what activities they like. Want to lie by the water and read a book? Visit museums? Tour the sights? I can guide them through all the options. Today, cruises make up about 40% of my business. And one thing that sets Dream Vacations apart is

PR O MOT IO NAL F E AT U RE

that if a cruise drops its price on an already booked trip, I capture the savings and pass them on to my clients. Not many travel agents do that. Plus, we are very good with group travel—company excursions, family reunions, incentive trips. Think of the time we can save with all those decisions! One last thing—buy travel insurance. For interrupted trips and lost luggage, of course, but really it’s for health reasons. If you get sick or break a leg in a foreign country, it could cost you thousands. Your health insurance won’t help you overseas.

What makes a good Realtor stand out?

Being a great Realtor is all about education and life experience and their commitment to the role. Not only do I have a masters degree from Rollins College, but I paid my dues in several key areas of real estate before becoming a licensed agent—Title Company, Loan Officer, Home Builders Association. As you read this, I have just finished renovating a home down to the studs and building it back. I know how a home is put together and can read an inspection report and understand what it means. Everyone wants a shiny penny in their new home, but

the reality is there is a lot of competition for those homes. I help my buyers see past the paint and find the home of their dreams. I have a broad background in real estate marketing. This coupled with my experience with home construction, I can advise my sellers how to prepare their home for sale based on their abilities and budget and then I can showcase that home expertly online where the buyers are—this has resulted in many record-breaking sales in my career. I run my business like an intimate boutique. I put in the time. Clients

deserve nothing less. Real estate is not a onesize-fits-all experience, and clients need their goals to be understood and achieved. Buying or selling a home is one of the most important financial decisions a person can make, moving is stressful. The best Realtor for you is experienced, focused on your needs, and really “gets’ you. Its all about communication and feeling comfortable enough to open up and discuss very personal aspects of your life - lifestyle, finances, and family matters. Oh, Well!

Bah, Humbug Lauren Liston shares beneficial tips to destress so you can get back to feeling comfort and joy this holiday season. KAT E MCDONALD

G

ut check: When you hear the words, “holiday season”… what do you feel? Do you smile and giggle with delight thinking of decorating trees and gathering with friends? Or does your chest tighten, heart race, and stomach drop? The holidays are hyped up to be “the most wonderful time of the year,” and for some, they are. But the pressure to be merry and jolly alongside the rest of the world becomes extra heavy when you feel anything but that. On top of the inevitable complexities and tensions of family relationships, there are the pressures of holiday shopping, gift and travel expenses, the stress of hosting gatherings or managing a packed calendar of holiday events. High, and sometimes unrealistic, expectations can add to the strain.

64

Loneliness and grief can also be heightened—especially when our televisions are filled with festive and lighthearted classic holiday movies. While some films, like “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” address the issue of holiday stress in a funny, heartwarming, and painfully relatable way, Lauren Liston is here to offer some tips on how to cope with stress and prevent a holiday season breakdown— before Uncle Eddie shows up at your front door. Lauren is a counselor who has devoted her life to empowering people. With a major in social science, a minor in substance abuse disorder, a master’s degree in mental health counseling and addiction, and registered as a mental health counselor Intern with the State of Florida, Lauren provides valuable insight on how to deal with

holiday stress and how to regain control of one’s life. “I help people develop coping skills to handle situations that can be anxiety-inducing,” Lauren explains. “During the holidays, anyone who struggles with anxiety, stress, depression, trauma, and the like can easily get

caught up in the hustle and pressure of the holidays. It’s extremely easy to lose footing and become distressed.” When chaos ensues, Lauren believes it is best to take a step back and realign with what’s truly important during this time: your own health and happiness.

taking a bath, reading a book, or going for a walk. Do something that you enjoy and relax!

1. Continue Your Self-Care Don’t forget about your daily walks, going to the gym, yoga classes, etc! Staying on some routine with moving your body will help your brain release “feel good” chemicals like endorphins and serotonin that help improve your overall mood.

2. Set Those Boundaries It’s OK to say “no.” You don’t have to force yourself to go to every holiday event. Do what feels best for you and be honest with your limits. If you can figure out what your priorities are, you can better determine what you don’t want to do and simply say “no.”

3. Take Time for Yourself Each Day Give yourself 15 minutes of “you” time, whether

6. Practice Gratitude During Those Special Moments WELLNESS COUNTS

4. Try a Deep Breath Technique Picture a box and take four deep breaths in, four deep breaths out, four deep breaths in, and four deep breaths out. You can do it from your car, office desk, or grocery line! You will feel calmer and more centered after a few deep breaths. When the holiday socializing gets to be too much, step aside and re-center yourself before you push yourself further into a stressful situation.

Take time to pause and look around for things to be grateful for, even if it’s just going for a walk on a beautiful day or a conversation with a dear friend. Keep it simple. Savor the small moments and carve them in your heart. Lauren also advises that while it may be tempting to stuff your feelings with sweets or pour yourself a “cup of cheer,” those habits can be more destructive than helpful. Everyone’s holiday experience is unique. Letting go of the notion that you “should” enjoy the holidays a certain way can relieve pressure, guilt, or shame that comes along with not feeling that way. “Never apologize for doing what you need to take care of yourself,” she adds. “It’s easy to get caught up thinking about everyone else during the holidays. But you’re important, too.” Yes, the holidays can be a unique time to reconnect with loved ones, share family traditions, or watch the wonder in a child’s eyes. But perhaps the best gift is the one you give yourself: grace and self-love.

Prioritizing Your

savings GOALS ‘Saving’ can be a daunting word.

Saving is something that you are told to do but not always taught how to do it. What am I saving? Where am I saving? What goals do I want to achieve? And more importantly, how much should I be saving? There are many ways to save and many different goals you can have with your savings. To help make multiple savings goals feel more attainable, we suggest a series of manageable steps:

M I CH AE L W Y TI A Z

Step 1: Contribute to your company’s retirement plan up to the full match. If your employer offers a workplace-sponsored savings plan like a 401(k), contribute at least enough to receive the maximum employer match. Whether your employer matches 50% of your contribution or dollar-for-dollar up to a certain amount, it’s hard to beat that kind of return, even in a bull market.

PR O M OT I O N A L F E AT U R E

Step 2: Pay off your non-deductible bad debt. Eliminating your debt, especially the high-interest consumer debt with no tax benefits, helps make it easier to reach your savings goal. If you’re carrying a balance on your credit cards or other high-interest loans, create a spending budget and look for ways to cut back on non-essential expenses.

N OV EM BER/ DECEM BER 202 3

67

Step 3: Be prepared for emergencies. Unexpected situations happen. They’re never easy, but you can cushion the blow by being financially prepared. Consider tucking away three to six months of essential living expenses in a savings or money market account. Having some cash ready for unexpected situations will help you avoid expensive and unwise alternatives like living off credit cards, being forced to sell investments at an inopportune time, or withdrawing money from a retirement savings account, which can often result in paying early withdrawal penalties.

Step 4: Max out your retirement accounts. Investing can help you meet your financial goals, but the amount you save and spend can count more. Try to contribute up to the IRS maximum if you invest in a 401(k) or Individual Retirement Account (IRA): limits for tax year 2023 are an annual $22,500 for your 401(k) and similar accounts, plus an extra $7,500 if you’re over the age of 50; an annual $6,500 for your IRA, plus an extra $1,000 if you’re over the age of 50. While these four steps are not all inclusive, it is certainly a great place to start! Everyone’s savings are going

wo things I love about the holiday season: presents and cookies. I particularly enjoy when these two joys are combined and presented as one. Back in the day, I would gift mason jars with cookie recipes, complete with all the dry goods needed, curating different styles depending on the person and their personal taste. But whether I gift them or get them, cookies are a holiday mainstay. The holiday cookie platter embodies the season, and it doesn’t care about your religion. It gathers people near and far and allows for a harmonious moment of happiness in a season that sometimes moves by us too quickly. Lucky for us, there is an endless supply of bakers anxiously waiting to create the perfect cookie here in Winter Garden. And while every bakery brings its own flair and texture, it can be daunting to select a cookie when our options are so vast and delectable. After sampling more than a few

Panaderia Mexicana Cardenas Fave: Marranitos If you’re looking for something new this season, consider Panaderia Mexicana Cardenas. Unassuming but grand, Cardenas is a gem of a bakery located on Plant St near the 7-11. They have the best prices in town on baked goods and they deliver on flavor. Don’t be shy if you’re not a native Spanish speaker, the staff is incredibly friendly and will gladly help you buy in bulk (which you will want). Make sure to arrive early as the bakery gets busy throughout the day.

Way Chocolate Fave: Alfajor & Cowboy This is one of my favorite places on Plant Street, and normally I opt for the Brigadeiro cake (the best dessert in town, and I stand by it!). However, I was pleasantly surprised when I ordered one of every cookie they offer and enjoyed each one. The Alfajor (shortbread-like cookies with dulce de leche filling) got high marks for flavor and uniqueness, but who doesn’t love a damn good cowboy cookie? Get both! A manual AB antenna switcher, the kind cavemen had to solder to their TVs back in ancient times. Assorted coins, quirky ones, like half dollars and buffalo nickels and a Chuck E. Cheese token from 1988. The replacement AC filters I’ve been looking for for months (damn it, I just caved and bought new ones two weeks ago). This is but a small sample of the mountain of Stuff all over the floor in the spare room I use as an office, theoretically, when it’s not stuffed full of Stuff. I sit cross-legged on the floor in the middle of the Stuff, the centerpiece of my own hellscape. Cradled in my hands is a black baby sock that’d been upcycled into a coin purse. Man, I used to love this thing. I got it when I was in high school and kept it

on me 24/7 until I stopped carrying cash.I reach over to add it to my Keep pile, when I hear a voice from above. “Do you really want to hang onto that?” I look up at the source of the voice—my boyfriend, hunched over me in his office chair like The Thinker—and I know what my answer is supposed to be. “I mean, I can’t just get rid of it.” That wasn’t it. I’ll say it: I’m grateful for Stuff. Maybe that sounds superficial, especially with the whole “extreme downsizing” thing we’re up our own ass about right now— as if living in your car and having three items to your name is some kind of flex. For me, it’s not Stuff itself so much as the meaning of Stuff. Every knickknack and craft scrap is a tiny piece of my identity, a snapshot of who I was once upon a time. I love the potential of Stuff, even useless Stuff like old keys and paint swatches; they only become trash when you throw them out.

The Local WI N TE R G AR DE N

But my original Stuffmanagement strategy (shove it in the back room and close the door, pretty brilliant) doesn’t cut it anymore. Not now that I have this person who cares about me and visits a lot and has a more, shall we say, minimalist take on Stuff. He’s kind of like my own personal Marie Kondo, which I like, except when I don’t. And I don’t like it right now, as I sit clutching my beloved sock like a Free Elf, confronting a series of hard, probing questions: “Do you use it?” I used to. “Do you use it now?” No, but I might use it again. “Have you used it in the last year?” No. “Two years?” … No. “Then maybe it’s time to let it go.” Easier said than done. Sure, I completely for-

got this sock-purse-thing existed until two minutes ago. But now that I’ve remembered it, how could I bear to part with it? My brow furrows as I survey the vast ocean of Stuff we’ve barely made a dent in, clogging the room I’d really like to use again. I heave a big sigh and toss it over to the Give pile. Out with the old, in with the new, right? I’ve been pretty grateful for all the new I’ve been handed lately. I ought to make room for more. “Perfect. And what about this?” He says, holding up one of my old notebooks from college. “Do we still need to hold onto it?” I mean … I can’t just get rid of it.
