.S. first lady Melania Trump tried her hand Monday at Japanese calligraphy at a Tokyo elementary school. She visited the Kyobashi Tsukiji school with her Japanese counterpart, Akie Abe. About 300 children welcomed them with a school song. Trump wrote the first character of the Japanese word for “peace,” as Abe wrote the second. A er Trump’s first stroke, a girl student si ng next to her advised her to hold the brush ver cally and explained the order of the strokes. “Yes?” Trump asked later as she turned to her instructor. The student gave a nod of approval, smiling.The two first ladies, both wearing navy blue dresses, posed for photos, shook hands and exchanged high fives with the school children. The children were shy at first, but as Trump lowered herself and greeted them, many hands rose up, trying to hold her

CHINESE COMPANIES TEAM UP FOR WORLD'S FIRST PHEV CEMENT MIXER TRUCK
Efcient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI) and Shannxi Automotive have teamed up to develop the world's rst PHEV cement mixer truck. PHEV drivetrain technology to cut costs and emissions in construction vehicles and appeal to a range of automakers.

lug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology has already helped hundreds of thousands of car buyers cut their fuel consump on and emissions, and now a couple of Chinese companies are looking to bring the same benefits to heavy duty vehicles in the construc on industry. Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI) and Shannxi Automo ve have teamed up to develop the world's first PHEV cement mixer truck. It's no secret that China has a major air pollu on problem, and the government has implemented subsidy programs to encourage the switch to electric power for larger vehicles, such as city buses, to address it. EDI's PowerDrive drivetrains, which can operate in either fully electric or hybrid modes and are aimed at OEM automo ve manufacturers, can be found

in many such buses in China, including those produced by bus and truck manufacturer Shaanxi Automo ve. Now the two have partnered to integrate EDI's PowerDrive 8000 PHEV drivetrain and PowerSuite vehicle control so ware into Shaanxi Automo ve's Class-8, 32ton cement mixer truck. The result will be a vehicle that can not only make its way to construc on site under electric power, but also operate its mixer electrically, thereby elimina ng the need for the engine to be kept idling while the cement is mixed. EDI says integra on and tes ng of the PHEV drivetrain is in its final stages, and the truck will be ready for ac on in the field in the next couple of months. It is hoped the vehicle will demonstrate the poten al for its PHEV drivetrain technology to cut costs and emissions in
construc on vehicles and appeal to a range of automakers. "We con nue to see a con nuing and expanded industry trend towards the electrifica on of medium and heavy duty trucks across the globe," says EDI CEO, Joerg Ferchau. "EDI established a market leadership posi on early on with our differen ated por olio of hybrid and electric drivetrain offerings, and we con nue to innovate to drive change for the commercial vehicle industry. IS NOW BIGGER, CHEAPER AND WATERPROOF TOO The newest member of the Kindle family is the rst to come with water resistance, it can survive up to 60 minutes under 2 meters (6.5 feet) of fresh water, and it can withstand splashes of salty seawater, too.

year and a half a er launching the Kindle Oasis as the thinnest and lightest (and most expensive) of its e-readers, Amazon is back with a follow-up. The 2017 model slims down even more while offering a bigger 7-inch screen, and adds bonus features like water resistance and audiobook support. Despite the jump in screen size from 6 to 7 inches, giving 30 percent more room for text, Amazon says the device retains the same 300 pixels-per-inch sharpness of its predecessor. It's also bumped up the number of LED backlights from 10 to 12, which should make for a clearer reading experience, and there's now an ambient light sensor that can adjust the screen brightness to your environment. The newest member of the Kindle family is the first to come with water resistance, as we men oned above. The IPX8 ra ng means it can survive up to 60 minutes under 2 meters (6.5 feet) of fresh water, and it can withstand splashes of salty

seawater, too, should you be taking it down to the beach. Here's another first for the Kindle line – support for audiobooks from Audible, thanks in part to the boosted internal memory that lets you store more on the device itself. Storage starts at 8 GB and goes all the way up to 32 GB, if you need that much. Bluetooth has been added, for headphones or speakers, though there's no headphone jack for cabled connec on. That same Audible support is coming to the previous Oasis and the standard 8thgenera on Kindle as well, so you can switch between text and audio versions of the same book as you like. You s ll n e e d t o b u y b o t h sta n d a rd a n d audiobook versions of your literature separately, though Amazon is offering discounts in some cases. While the design is similar to the 2016 model, including that asymmetrical sidebar you can use either le or righthanded, this me the e-reader is made
from one seamless piece of aluminum. The device weighs in at 194 grams (6.8 oz), so it's a li le heavier than last year's 131 g (4.6 oz) model. As for the ba ery life, Amazon is promising a huge six weeks of reading between charges, but we'll have to wait for some real-world tests to see if that holds up. You get a choice of new covers too, US$44.99 for the fabric ones and $59.99 for the leather ones. They no longer come with extra ba eries as they did last me, but they can now act as kickstands for hands-free reading (or listening). Last year's Kindle Oasis had a lot going for it, but it didn't quite ck all of the boxes, whereas the 2017 version seems to have everything you could want, and comes in cheaper too – the base 8 GB model is $249.99, which goes up to $279.99 for the 32 GB e-reader and $349.99 for 32 GB and cellular connec vity.

LARRY FOGG TRIP TO CHONGQING, CHINA
I
took the high speed train from Chengdu, China, to Chongqing, China, on Friday, 16 June, to visit with friends in Chongqing over the weekend. A er arriving in Chongqing, I took a local taxi from the high speed rail sta on to my hotel. I called my friend Summer, who currently works for China Express Airlines, to let her know that I had arrived. She had arranged for me to accompany her and several China Express ight a endants to go to the Sante Blueberry Camping Garden that evening to pick blueberries and have a mul -course dinner. Later in the a ernoon, Summer sent one of her friends to pick me up at my hotel and take me to meet up with her and three more of her China Express friends. As we all drove high up in the Gele Mountain Interna onal Ci eslow mountains, we passed the No Feng Shui Treasure Land Park en

route to the Sante Blueberry Camping Garden. The people at Sante also grow many different kinds of fresh vegetables in terraced plots. We proceeded to pick as many blueberries, fresh off the bushes, as we could eat. A er picking blueberries, we were served an eight course meal plus steamed rice. The people at Sante used their fresh picked vegetables in the food prepara on, and the food was marvelous. During the dinner, I took my chops cks and the piece of chicken that I extracted from the dish turned out to be the en re chicken head. I looked at the chicken head and said to Summer, “I don’t know how to handle this,” and she politely replied, “just give it to me.” We all ate as much as we could, and the folks at Sante packed up the remainder of the food for them to take home.

A er dinner, we hiked around the camping area as the sun went down. A few goats were kept at one sec on, and, at another sec on, the China Express people enjoyed bouncing on two trampolines while I a empted to take some photos of them. I
managed to capture one photo of Summer at the top of one of her high bounces. A er the trampolines, we drove back to Chongqing and I was dropped off at my hotel. It was a wonderful evening with Summer and new friends.

few of the buildings had small shops and small local restaurants open for tourists. At one street corner, several ar sts were busy pain ng images of the ancient buildings. We ate lunch at a ny Chongqing local noodle restaurant and then went to visit the Huguang Guild Complex. The complex consists of old buildings da ng from 1759 that served as a cultural, business and social center for more than 200 years. It was built for people from Hubei, Guangdong, Guanxi, and Hunan. It opened for tourists in 2005 a er a renova on. The complex was very interes ng and provided many photo opportuni es. On Saturday morning, 17 June, Thong and Peng, two of my friends from Chongqing, drove Summer and her daughter, Nancy, to pick me up at my hotel. They decided that our first stop would be to visit a por on of “Old Chongqing” in the Na’nan District of Chongqing. Thong parked near a tower that Peng referred to as the Tower of Scholars, and we
walked down a stairway to “Old Chongqing.” We walked along the ancient pedestrian streets and a d m i re d t h e a rc h i te c t u re a n d s u r ro u n d i n g s . S o m e b u i l d i n g s appeared empty while others were occupied by local residents whom I was told refused to leave their homes to allow demoli on of the area by the Government for new development. A
We ended our day with a visit to a shopping center on Nanbin Road east of the Sheraton Grand Hotel. It had a several art galleries and a large modern book store. The top floor was occupied by a ver y nice restaurant where we ate a classic Chongqing hot pot dinner while overlooking the Yangtze River. A er

dinner, we visited the bookstore w h e re N a n c y, a e r b rows i n g through many books, purchased several. I had read recent newspaper ar cles discussing the increasing popularity of bookstores in China, and this bookstore was packed with young people and families with young children. Thong then drove us back to my hotel where I thanked all of them for a wonderful day in Chongqing. Hopefully we can all get together for another visit either in Chongqing or in my hometown of Los Angeles, California. On Sunday, 18 June, I took the high speed train to the Chengdu East Sta on. I transferred to the metro and rode it to the Dongman Bridge Sta on near my Chengdu hotel. The following morning, I boarded the ďŹ rst of my ights from Chengdu back home to Los Angeles.

AVOID 7 MISTAKES TO MAINTAIN THIS WINTER

ry, winter air can wreak havoc on skin. Not only does it steal moisture away, it can lead to ny cracks in the surface, lowering skin’s ability to protect against free radical damage. In fact, if you’re not careful, you can suffer accelerated aging over the winter months.
With a few changes to your skin care rou ne, you can avoid the damage and keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant during these winter months. Avoid these seven mistakes, and step up your nourishing and moisturizing care
LICKING YOUR LIPS We do it without thinking about it. Our lips get dry and our tongues naturally respond. This is horrible for our skin. Not only does the saliva evaporate, taking the moisture with it, it also contains enzymes that help digest your food—think “break down.” These enzymes do the same to the thin, fragile skin on your lips, so you end up with drier, more chapped lips than before you licked them. Keep lip balm with you always, and use it whenever you feel the urge to lick. Make sure you choose a product without petrolatum ingredients, as they can cause long-term dryness. Look for bee’s wax, honey, shea bu er, natural oils, and aloe.

PUTTING ANYTHING ON FLAKY SKIN
USING YOUR SUMMER SKIN CARE ROUTINE Winter came suddenly for many of us this year. That means we didn’t get me to adjust. If you’re s ll using your summer products and rou ne, it ’s me to reevaluate. The skin naturally needs more moisture in winter, as the air is drier and tends to steal more hydra on from the skin. If you don’t respond to this change in needs, your skin will end up dry, dull, and damaged for your holiday get-togethers. Ask yourself: what does my skin need? Increased moisture is the most common requirement. You may want to change your lo on to a cream, and consider liquid founda on over powder. You may also want to change up your cleanser from a gel or lo on to a more cream-based formula. If you haven’t already, add an an -aging serum to pump up the hydra on. Your skin should feel so , smooth, and comfortable. If you no ce ghtness, dryness, or itchiness, something is off and you need to try something else.
I know, we try to cover it up, but it just doesn’t work. Any type of founda on, even liquid, will just call a en on to the damaged skin. If you no ce flakes, it means two things: 1) you’re not exfolia ng enough, 2) your moisturizer isn’t working. We usually suggest exfolia ng one-totwo mes a week, but in the winter, that may not be enough. If you no ce flaky skin, go ahead and exfoliate—just make sure you’re using a gentle product. Avoid nut-based and plas cbased scrubs, as these cause damage and irrita on that can lead to redness and acne breakouts. Instead, look for Dead Sea mud or clay, papaya and other natural enzymes, oat ingredients, fruitbased ingredients, gentle acids, and essen al oils. Then make sure that your moisturizer is giving your skin what it needs. An added serum (as noted above) may be the perfect solu on. Moisturizing masks can also be a lifesaver.

IGNORING YOUR FEET Once we stop wearing sandals, a lot of us forget about our feet. This is a bad idea in winter. Feet (along with hands) take the brunt of the abuse, and are o en the first part of the body to feel the cold. You know that the second something’s wrong with your feet, your whole body can feel off. Besides, the longer you neglect them, the harder it will be to get them in shape next spring. Consider not only maintaining your foot care, but stepping it up. A warm footbath can wash away all your stress in the winter, and if you add some deep moisturizer and self-massage a erwards, you’ll feel like a new person! Add Epsom salts to your bath to soothe any foot pain and so en skin, and regularly buff the soles to keep them so and healthy.
NEGLECTING YOUR HANDS We tend to focus on our faces while neglec ng our hands. In the last few years, however, we’ve begun to realize that our hands can quickly betray our age faster. It’s me to extend your skin care rou ne to your hands—which are the first to suffer in rough, winter weather. We wash them more o en to avoid ge ng sick, and we expose them to the elements—all without giving them any extra care. This is a sure recipe for dry, callused, cracked, and oldlooking hands. Carry a good, quality hand cream with you. Put it on a er each washing. This is cri cal if you want so , smooth, and young-looking hands. Avoid hand sani zer if you can—most are alcoholbased, which dry out your skin. Warm water and soap work just as well if you have it nearby. Finally, step up your hand care at night. Exfoliate your hands (you can use the same product you use on your face) and apply a deep, an aging moisturizer. If your hands are really suffering, wear co on gloves overnight to seal in moisture.

FAILING TO USE A HUMIDIFIER Dry dry dry. That’s the air in most loca ons during the winter. All day and all night long it’s pulling moisture from your skin. You can apply moisturizer and apply moisturizer, but the air keeps stealing it away. If you don’t use a humidifier—at least in your room, overnight—you’re figh ng a losing ba le against the dryness. Find a humidifier that works for you and use it in your bedroom, and poten ally in other areas of your home to hydrate the air.

Indeed, it seems like they are going overboard in pandering to their fans. A number of clips have surfaced and if one did not know be er, one would think they would release the whole film in parts before it gets released. There is a thing called too much details, a er all.
