The event started with the entry of Their Highnesses to the Memorial Plaza, accompanied by a 21-gun salute, followed by the laying of wreaths at the memorial. Family members of UAE martyrs were presented with the Order of the Martyr by Their Highnesses to honour their sacrifice to the na on. The event was the culmina on of a day of remembrance for the UAE martyrs, with cannon fire and roaring jets in the blue skies as part of the proceedings. Major-General Saleh Mohammad Al Ameri, Commander of the UAE Ground Forces, gave a rousing speech at the event on behalf of the martyrs’ families, salu ng the bravery of the UAE’s Armed Forces and its soldiers who had laid down their lives to protect their country. “We are celebra ng the November 30
as Commemora on Day, [which remembers] the country ’s brave soldiers who have laid their lives down in service of the na on,” he said, as the audience of the UAE’s leaders and family members applauded, taking pride in their sons, fathers, and brothers. “Not only did these soldiers lay down their Rulers then visited the presenta on halls that inform visitors on why November 30 was designated as Commemora on Day. The date coincides with the martyrdom of Salem Suhail Bin Khamis Al Dahmani, who died in Greater Tunb Island on November 30, 1971, protec ng the na on’s land. The centre also contains artworks dedicated to UAE martyrs, which comes as part of the Proud Expressions ini a ve by the Martyrs’ Families’ Affairs Office at the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court. “I also pay my hear elt tribute to those soldiers who are collabora ng with the UAE’s Armed Forces, figh ng against extremist forces in the region. I salute those countries and their soldiers who were also martyred in restoring peace in the region.”
Later, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed inaugurated Wahat Al Karama’s interac ve visitors centre. The centre allows visitors to learn about the values of altruism that define the sacrifices of Emira martyrs and heroes throughout history. Visitors can learn more about the UAE’s heroes, and how they served not only the na on, but also humanity. The Rulers were briefed about the contents of the centre that includes pictures that narrate the UAE’s great humanitarian achievements, the aid it extends to friendly na ons and needy people across the globe and its efforts to spread security.

Screen: 5.8-inch Super AMOLED, 1125 x 2436 pixels (458 ppi), 19.5:9 aspect ra o Internals: A11 Bionic CPU, 3 GB RAM, 64/128 GB storage Camera: Dual 12 MP The iPhone X won't be everyone's favorite handset of the year, and you could make a good case that no phone is really worth a dollar shy of $1,000 and up. But on the other hand, it's dominated the mobile conversa on all year. Despite being iden cal to the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in terms of internal specs, this s ll seems like a new era for Apple's smartphone, led by that gorgeouslooking display, complete with its signature notch.

The other big new feature on board here is Face ID, with no room for Touch ID on the front of the iPhone any more, and while it's going to take some ge ng used to, it seems face unlock is here to stay. Stunning looks, blistering speed thanks to that A11 Bionic processor, and all the goodies of iOS 11 thrown in too – the iPhone X may well be too expensively priced even for Apple, but this feels like the future of smartphones.

GOOGLE PIXEL 2 XL Screen: 6.0-inch P-OLED, 1440 x 2880 pixels (538 ppi), 18:9 aspect ra o Internals: Snapdragon 835 CPU, 4 GB RAM, 64/128 GB storage Camera: 12.2 MP The burn-in and satura on screen issues that have affected some Google Pixel 2 XL units notwithstanding (you can find these well documented elsewhere, if you want to decide if these are dealbreakers for you) we think this is just about the best Android phone you can get right now, at least from the so ware side. The 6-inch OLED display banishes the bezels right to the edge, and combined with the so ly textured backing, it means that the Pixel 2 XL looks and feels as good as anything else out there at the moment. The 12-megapixel camera might only have a single lens and sensor but it's widely regarded as the best in the business, helped along by Google's smart image processing, and once you add in the style and polish of the latest Pixel launcher, complete with seamless Google Assistant integra on, the overall package looks very, very
SAMSUNG S8 PLUS Screen: 6.2-inch Super AMOLED, 1440 x 2960 pixels (529 ppi), 18.5:9 aspect ra o Internals: Snapdragon 835 CPU, 6/8 GB RAM, 64/128 GB storage Camera: 12 MP Samsung's two 2017 flagships appeared way back in March, but they remain two of the very best smartphones you can buy today. Despite the likes of Apple and Google having an extra six months to perfect their handsets, the S8 Plus and the S8 s ll look just as good as any rival – as the almost bezel-free, AMOLED Infinity displays prove, no one does a smartphone displays quite like Samsung does. We slightly prefer the 6.2-inch display of the S8 Plus to the 5.8-inch version on the Galaxy S8, but there's only the size to choose between them. For all that's great about the S8 Plus though, we didn't see much of a camera upgrade over the (admi edly s ll excellent) Samsung Galaxy S7, the fingerprint sensor is awkwardly placed around the back, and Samsung's version of Android s ll can't touch Google's.

The Galaxy Note 8 improves over the Galaxy S8 Plus with a bigger 6.3-inch screen, a be er camera setup (with two rear cameras rather than one), and of course that stylus, which expands what users can do with the handset in various different ways – from lock screen note-taking to online transla ons. Most of the same pros and cons of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus s ll apply to the Note 8, Bixby and all, but with that upgraded camera and the extra func onality that comes along with the stylus, the addi onal $100+ can look like decent value. Buy any of the 2017 Samsung phones though, and you're ge ng one of the finestlooking, fastest, most capable handsets of the year.
LG V30 Screen: 6.0-inch P-OLED, 1440 x 2880 pixels (538 ppi), 18:9 aspect ra o Internals: Snapdragon 835 CPU, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage Camera: Dual 16 MP + 13 MP LG was the manufacturer that started the trend of bezelfree phones with the LG G6 in February, and then in August the LG V30 came along to improve on that blueprint even further. It's bigger than its predecessor, but lighter too, and comes with an Hi-Fi 32-bit Quad DAC from Bang & Olufsen for your high fidelity audio listening needs. The LG V30 is also the first phone from LG to make the switch to an OLED screen. One of the dual cameras around the back of the LG V30 makes use of a market-leading f/1.6 aperture (maximizing the amount of light let in), like the LG G6 before it, so the phone can hold its own in the photo-taking department as well as every other area. With support for HDR10, IP68 waterproofing, and compa bility with Google's Daydream VR pla orm, the LG V30 has an awful lot going for it.

OnePlus first started offering flagship-level features at midrange prices in 2014 with the OnePlus One, and three years down the line the OnePlus 5T shows the Chinese company is really ge ng into its stride. This is a fantas clooking smartphone, packed with top-end internal components and fi ed with a 6-inch, 18:9 AMOLED display. That screen is a big upgrade over the OnePlus 5 we saw earlier in the year, though the latest handset keeps the star ng price of its predecessor. When you see something like the OnePlus 5T on the market it makes you seriously weigh up whether you need to pay close to $1,000 for the more famous handsets – the face unlock system might not be as advanced as Apple's, and the camera quality might not quite match the Samsung phones, but this is s ll a very impressive phone at a very temp ng price, and it even retains the 3.5 mm headphone jack. OnePlus keeps going from strength to strength.

Round-ups of the best smartphones will inevitably focus on the high-end, premium handsets – because they have the best components, the best screens, and the best features – but we'd like to men on the Moto G5 Plus as one of the most appealing budget handsets of the year. Of course there's no chance you'd mistake this for an iPhone X, but for less than $300 it does everything you need it to and then some. One nice touch that we like is the ability to use the fingerprint sensor to swipe through screens and menus, meaning you have to spend less me jabbing at the screen, and while you just get a single 12-megapixel camera, it's capable of taking decent shots in most condi ons. There's also Google Assistant on board, so you can tap into its ever-growing knowledge bank, and the Android Nougat so ware that comes with the phone has only been slightly skinned by Lenovo. As an added bonus, lower-level specs and a lower-res screen means decent ba ery life between charges.

flew from Chengdu, China, to Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, 2 June, en route to Chiang Rai, Thailand. A er overnigh ng in Bangkok, I flew to Chiang Rai and checked into my hotel on 3 June. The purpose of this trip was to rent a car and take a road trip in the far north of Thailand. Although I did not have a preplanned i nerary, I wanted to either visit the mountains in far northwestern Thailand near Myanmar or visit the Nan and Phrae Provinces of central northern Thailand near Laos. I rented a car on Sunday, 4 June, and drove to Doi Tung, north of Chiang Rai, to visit the beau ful Mae Fah Luang Gardens. I hadn’t visited the gardens in several years, and I wanted to see the most recent changes. I no ced a huge white Buddha statue on a distant hill north of Chiang Rai. Since I had never seen the statue before, I decided to take a detour to visit it first. The giant white Buddha statue is part of picturesque Wat Huai Pla Kung. The Buddha statue is s ll a work in progress and is twenty-six stories high with the middle interior por on s ll under construc on. I took the interior elevator to the 25th floor, and the white interior sculptures were spectacular. The white Buddha statue is adjacent to a nine story high Thai-Chinese style pagoda which is also very nice. Of the numerous mes that I have visited Chiang Rai, I was overjoyed to discover Wat Huai Pla Kung. I con nued driving to Doi Tung and spent the remainder of the a ernoon strolling around the Mae Fah Luang Gardens.

A er deciding to visit the Phu Langka Forest Park en route to Nan, I began my road trip in earnest on Monday, 5 June. The fairly long drive to the park consisted of some narrow secondary roads with beau ful mountain scenery. A er I booked a cabin at the Pulangka Resort on Thai Route 1148 for the night, I hired a driver and took an off-road trip to Phu Langka Forest Park. Since it was the rainy season, the off-road trip through the park was on a slippery dirt trail, with many deep ridges and gullies, ascending the mountains to a hiking trail-head that led to the two mountain peaks. My driver and I hiked to both the lower Doi Phunom peak and then to the higher Doi Phu Langka peak. The eleva on at the Doi Phu Langka peak is 1,720 meters. The spectacular views from the peaks were somewhat obscured by distant highhumidity haze. During the downhill return, my driver nearly lost control of the vehicle in a deep rut and damaged his offroad vehicle. Fortunately for me, the vehicle was drivable back to the resort where several people began to assess the damage. Although the cabin was very primi ve,

the double bed had very good mosquito ne ng. I placed all of my belongings on the bed within the mosquito ne ng to prevent them from becoming infested with ants and other insects within the cabin. The view from the cabin porch, overlooking a valley, was spectacular, and, off in the distance, I could see a por on of Route 1148, where I would be driving to Nan the following day. Since the nearby Magic Mountain Bar and Restaurant was closed, I ate dinner at the resort. I woke up early the next morning to view the sunrise across the valley, and a er
breakfast at the resort, I began my drive to Nan via Route 1148 and Route 101. Although the drive to Nan was supposed to be rela vely short, I missed a U-turn as I exited Route 1148 onto Highway 101 and drove in the wrong direc on on Highway 101. I realized my mistake when I saw a sign for a Laos Immigra on checkpoint. A er making a U-turn, I backtracked along Highway 101, past Route 1148, and then con nued on to Nan. Although the scenery was beau ful heading to Laos, I regre ed the extra 90 to 100 kilometers of driving.

I checked into a very nice hotel in Nan and then went to a recommended local Nan restaurant for a late lunch. A er lunch, I visited Wat Phrathat Chang Kam Wara Viharn, Wat Phrathat Chae Haeng, Wat Phrathat Khao Noi, Wat Phumin, and Wat Sripanton (Golden Temple). Beau ful murals decorated the walls of Wat Phumin. There were also some amorous murals on the temple walls including one famous mural of a man and woman referred to as “The Whisper.” In fact, ubiquitous images of the “The Whisper”

mural were displayed throughout Nan City. The image was even displayed on the curtains in my hotel room. On Wednesday, 7 June, I drove to the entrance of the Doi Phaphueng Waterfalls but was turned back because the waterfalls were closed due to the rainy season. My next stop was at the Sao Din Na Noi Landforms to walk among unique soil forma ons. I con nued driving to Doi Samer Dao, a mountain in the Si Din Na onal Park. Doi Samer Dao has a ridge with a view of a “lion head” rock forma on
and expansive landscape views. It is also referred to as the mountain to the stars. I also observed stunning views in the opposite direc on from another ridge as I hiked back to my car. A er a long drive back to Nan City, I visited Wat Boon Yen, Wat Huay Kuang, the Nan Na onal Museum, and then revisited Wat Phumin to take addi onal photos of the wall murals. I drove to Phrae on Thursday, 8 June, and checked into another very nice hotel. I really appreciated the nice hotels a er staying in the very primi ve cabin at the Pulangka Resort. A er a emp ng to visit another waterfall that was closed due to the rainy season, I visited Wat Doi Leng, Wat Phrathat Chohae, Wat Phrathat Chom Chaeng, Wat Phrathat Jom Jang, Wat Phrathat Suton Mong Kol Kee Ree, and Wat Phra Non. The following day, I first drove north to visit the Pha Nang Khol Cave, which was interes ng but not as spectacular as some of the karst caves of southern China. My next stop was at the Phae Mueang Phi Forest Park, another landform with unique soil forma ons. I then returned to Phrea City and visited Wat Phrathat Pu Jue, Wat Hua Kuang, Wat Si Chum, Wat Luang, and Wat Pong Sunan. Since I s ll had ample me, I drove a long distance along Route 1023 to visit Wat Phrathat Lam Lee and Wat Phrathat Hi Soy.

On Saturday, 10 June, I began the long drive back to Chiang Rai. Along the way, I visited Wat Phra Tet near Khaewn as well as Wat Phrathat Phra Lo near Song. I returned my rental car a er I arrived in Chiang Rai and spent the next day edi ng photos. On Monday, 12 June, I visited the rela vely new Wat Rog Sell Ten, commonly referred to as the Blue Temple, which is beau ful and another work in progress. I also visited Wat Phra That Doi Kow situated above the Chiang Rai reservoir lake. My last stop was at the Chertawan Interna onal Medita on Center. This center is very large and was a very interes ng place to visit. I ew back to Bangkok on Monday, 12 June, e n ro u te to C h e n gd u , C h i n a . I wa s disappointed that I was unable to visit the two waterfalls, but I was very happy to have been able to visit so many beau ful temples and drive through the wonderful mountains of Nan and Phrae Provinces.

Unfortunately, a bad hairstyle can cut through all that confidence and leave you looking older than you are. The good news is that it's pre y easy to update your look without a lot of me or money. We asked some of our favorite hairstylists to share the biggest mistakes they see women making with their hair — and how to fix them.
Hair Mistakes that make you
LOOK OLDER
THE WRONG LENGTH Finding the perfect haircut for your face shape can be a lifelong search. Talk to your stylist about the most fla ering look for your hair and face type. Our hair thins as we age, so keeping it long may accentuate the thinning. "If hair is thinning, going shorter is an op on," says Sam Villa Show Ambassador, Marissa Villa. "If
you've had long hair your en re life, it might be me to update to a lob."Whatever you do, make sure your haircut has layers and depth. "The classic hairstyle that makes a woman look older and dowdy is the cut where everything is the same length all over, a few inches long," says Damian San ago, co-owner of Mizu New York salon.
CAT-LADY LONG Our stylists seemed to agree that all women can rock long hair… to a point. That being said, crazy long hair will always age you. "Too long always ages a woman," advises celebrity stylist Mitch Stone. "I'm not talking past-your-shoulders long, but cat-lady long (not to be confused with Cat Woman)." According to Stone, once your hair has passed your ribs, it's officially making you look older. He recommends

going with a meless long bob "or as short as an inch or 2 past your chin."If you love the long look, go for it! Just make sure your haircut does not go shorter in the front and longer in the back. "In general, shorter in the front, longer in the back (unless you're going for a rocker mullet) tends to look dated," explains Judy McGuinness, senior stylist at Mizu New York salon. "Keep everything pre y square or a bit longer in the front for shorter hairstyles."

NEVER CHANGING YOUR LOOK For hair stylist Jenna Mast, the biggest mistake women make when it comes to looking older is keeping the same hairstyle for decades. "If you are 50 years old, the chances are high that you've been going to a salon for 25+ years and like the way your hair looked in 1992 when you lost a bunch of weight and had that great red dress you wore to your cousin's wedding," she told The List. "Which makes it likely that you've b e e n i n s t r u c n g h a i rd re s s e r a e r hairdresser to recreate that look by showing them that exact dated photo. The reality is, like everything else, hairdressing has evolved drama cally."As Sam Villa Show Ambassador, Marissa Villa told us, "It's important to evolve — everything usually comes back around, but with a modern twist." "Grey and aging hair has unique characteris cs that require a mask once a week, color protec ng shampoo, thermal protectant, and more effort in the fight against frizz."

BEWARE OF HELMET HEAD As we age, our hair thins, so it's temp ng to whip out the hairspray and give yourself some serious volume. The problem is that too much hairspray gives you that s ff 80s look, so not youthful. "We all want to avoid it, yet this super s ff hairstyle, popularized by news anchors in the 1980s, is s ll quite popular with the news world and beyond," celebrity hair stylist Sco Yance told me."When clients ask for a cut like this, I am always honest with them, le ng them know that a s ff hairstyle will always make you look years older." Yance actually likes to steer clear of tradi onal hairspray all together. He prefers more versa le products that s ll let the hair move. If you're stuck in a windstorm and your hair doesn't move, it's me to move away from the hairspray.

INSTRUCTIONS Mix the diced apples with the cinnamon, brown sugar and bu er. Bu er and our a pie pan. Place one of the pie crusts in the pie pan. Spread the diced apples evenly over the crust.
