BETTER VIDEO RECORDING TIPS WITH YOUR SMARTPHONE

E

veryone has a powerful video camera in their pocket: a smart phone. And with a little practice and access to a few key tips, even you can start recording great footage, or even record an indie film or documentary using just your smart phone. There are eight tips which will help you to record a video in your smart phone in a better way.

FRAMING Now that you're recording in the proper orientation (see above), completely fill the frame

with your subject. You can also put him or her or it slightly off-centre to create a more visually interesting scene. Just play around and see what looks best.

ZOOM In order to zoom in while recording without losing the crisp, vivid quality you desire in videos, you'll have to get closer to your subject (or use an accessory, but more on that later). In general, you should always get as close as you can, especially for tight shots on faces. Let us see those freckles and fine

lines and cheek fuzz.

LANDSCAPE Nothing ruins great footage like having two black vertical bars along both sides of your video. To avoid this amateur mistake, make sure to use landscape orientation and not portrait orientation while recording.

TIME LAPSE Time lapse or timelapse photography is a cinematography technique whereby frequency at which film frames are captured (the frame rate) is much lower than that used to 32

Let's be honest: smart phone cameras are just not as good as the powerhouses made by Canon or Nikon or Sony, mostly because smart phone cameras and their stock camera apps lack fine controls and other things. If you therefore want to take your smart phone video-recording skills to the next level, without having to buy a pricey DSLR, you might want to consider buying accessories that reveal your camera's true potential

EDITING And finally, sometimes a little editing is required in order to make your footage go from "meh" to "wow". And nowadays you can do some intense editing on your smart phone as well, meaning you won't need to invest in fancy desktop software. 33

COVER STORY

OMAR MANSOOR SHINES BRIGHT AT LONDON FASHION WEEK EMAL CORRESPONDENT UK: MANI KHAWAJA PHOTOGRAPHER: SHAHID MALIK JEWELLRY BY: AMISHI LONDON 44

L

ondon Fashion Week is an exceedingly glamorous affair. One of the big four fashion weeks (alongside Paris, New York and Milan), the LFW is held twice a year and helps set the tone for what is in and out of style each season. Omar Mansoor, a Pakistani fashion designer making waves internationally, presented his 9th collection at London Fashion Week on Saturday, 13th September, 2014, at the stunning Royal Horseguards Hotel. The show was extremely well organised and the audience, including Princess Nouf Bint Bandar Al Saud and other Middle Eastern dignitaries as well as local and international celebrities, were warmly welcomed and guided to their seats by representatives of Dee Vesali Publicity, the firm handling the hospitality and PR for the event. I had been highly intrigued when 45

I'd heard Omar describe the concept of his latest collection as being inspired by the notorious Mata Hari, an exotic dancer and courtesan who was famously convicted for being a German spy in 1917. Well known for her rebellious attitude and free spirit, as well as her bespoke wardrobe and distinctive sensuous style; channelling Mata Hari was certainly an ambitious venture for anyone to undertake. But Omar Mansoor did not disappoint and wowed the audience with his hand woven, crochet decorated flowing gowns in pure silk, crepe and chiffon, featuring semi-precious stones including turquoise and rubies. His collection consisted of contrasting red, turquoise and light gold colours.turquoise depicting the struggles that Mata Hari had gone through early on in her life, followed by her golden years, and the red conveying the end of her life's story. After the show, I tried to get a word with 46

PLEASANT DUBAI

Omar about his collection as he entertained excited audience members trying to get their pictures taken with him or to buy their favourite dresses before anyone else. Speaking exclusively to Emal Magazine, Omar said that he had been truly humbled by all the positive feedback he had received and was proud to have been able to represent Pakistan at such a prestigious event.

He revealed that he had spent over six months on the Mata Hari collection, fine tuning every little detail. "I take pride in my work," he said. "Anything that I'm involved with needs to be perfect. I give it everything I can, so that when people see a design by Omar Mansoor, they can be comfortable in knowing that the quality is second to none.

The most appreciated dress had been a turquoise full length gown that had been produced in collaboration with Inaaya Online with the help of rural

Sindhi female artisans employing traditional Sindhi ralli work. Omar Mansoor's ability to hold a successful exhibition at such a prominent stage is the culmination of years of hard work and tireless dedication to perfecting his craft, and it is heartening to see Pakistan

TRAVEL & TOURISM

LARRY FOGG TRIP TO MALTA

An ultra top secret complex which housed Great Britain's War Headquarters in Malta. It was here that the defence of Malta was conducted and the Allied offensive operations in the Mediterranean were directed.

I

arrived at Malta in the early afternoon on Friday,. The weather was warm with bright sunny skies. After checking into my hotel near the Castille Square in Valletta, I decided to explore the neighbourhood near the hotel. While walking, I came across signs pointing to the Lascaris War Rooms. Since I had never heard of them, I decided to stop in for a visit. They were an ultra top secret complex which housed Great Britain's War Headquarters in Malta. It was 61

here that the defence of Malta was conducted and the Allied offensive operations in the Mediterranean were directed. It was also here during 1943 that General Eisenhower and his S u p r e m e Commanders directed the Allied Invasion of Sicily. Following World War 2, it became the Mediterranean Fleet Headquarters. In 1967, it was taken over by NATO to be used as a strategic Communication Centre for the interception of Soviet submarines i n t h e Mediterranean. They are being restored to the circa W W 2 t i m e f ra m e and the tour was well worth the admission charge.

The following morning I went to visit some of Malta's prehistoric megalithic temples. My first stop was at the Tarxien Temples which date back to 3600-3200 BC and are a World Heritage site. Both the South Temple and the East Temple were built between 3150 and 2500 BC. After leaving the Tarxien Temples, I went to see the Blue Grotto en route to the

62

Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temple sites. The Blue Grotto is spectacular and should not be missed while visiting Malta. After touring the visitor centre at the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temple sites, I walked to Hagar Qim Temple which dates back to 3600-3200 BC. I continued walking down the hillside to the Mnajadra Temples which also date back to 3600-3200 BC and consist of three temples overlooking a forecourt. The middle temple is the most recent of the Mnajadra Temples and dates from 3100-2500 BC. Both of these temple complexes are also World Heritage sites. Upon returning to Valletta, I visited the Malta National Archaeological Museum to view relics from various prehistoric Malta temples. The collection in the museum was magnificent and which I appreciated 63

even more for having been to several of the temples earlier in the day. The museum also allowed photography. When I arrived back at the hotel, I had the receptionist book a day trip to the Island of Gozo for me the following day. A little later I inquired to the hotel receptionist about obtaining a ticket to the very exclusive Hal Saflieni Hypogeum ancient underground burial complex. She told me that tickets were extremely difficult to obtain but that they are normally available from the Malta National Archaeological Museum and that a few lastminute tickets are available each morning when the Fine Arts Museum opens. I walked b a c k t o t h e Archaeological Museum and was told that tickets for the Hypogeum were 65

fully booked thru March 2. They also said that a few lastminute tickets for the following day are available each morning when the Fine Arts Museum opens. I asked how to get to the Fine Arts Museum and I walked to the museum to be sure that I knew how to get there in case I decided to try for a last-minute ticket. When I arrived at the Fine Arts Museum, I went to the receptionist and asked if this was the place to obtain lastminute tickets. He replied that it was the place and asked me how many tickets I needed. I replied that I needed only one ticket and he replied that he had two tickets for

the following day and could sell me one. I i m m e d i a t e l y purchased the ticket for the 12:00 noon tour for Sunday, 26 February. Upon returning to my hotel, I told the receptionist that I had somehow managed to obtain a Hypogeum ticket for Sunday and she changed my Gozo Island reservation to Monday.

O n S u n d a y morning, I took a t a x i t o t h e Hypogeum and the taxi driver was amazed that I had actually been able to obtain a ticket. The Hypogeum was amazing – no bags, backpacks, purses, or cameras are allowed. The number of visitors is strictly restricted 66

and the air within the Hypogeum is climate controlled. Each visitor is g i v e n a n automatically functioning audio headset guide which only r e q u i r e s adjustment of the volume after the language is set by the staff. A staff person leads the small group of people through the Hypogeum. The Hypogeum, or underground cavity, consists of a complex of rockcut halls, passages, and chambers on three levels underground that reach a depth of 10.6 meters and cover an area approximately 500 square meters. The halls, passages,

and chambers were carved using only stone tools. Curvilinear and spiral paintings in red ochre remain visible in some areas. The oldest part of the Hypogeum is the level closest to the surface and dates from 3600-3300 BC. The middle level dates from 33003000 BC. The lowest level dates from 3250-2500 BC with the most recent part being the deepest underground. Based upon excavations of t h e s i t e , archaeologists have determined that the Hypogeum was a burial complex. It is also a World Heritage site. After touring the Hypogeum, I went to the walled medieval city of Mdina which 67

was once the medieval capital of Malta. It was later taken over by the Knights of St. John in 1530. The literature states that because Mdina was far from the sea and the Grand Harbour making it was difficult to defend, the Knights built a new capital at Valletta and many of the residents of Mdina moved to Valletta. Valletta became the capital in 1571 and remains the capital today. Although the Mdina Cathedral is said to be spectacular, it is closed on Sundays.

After walking through Mdina, I returned to Valletta as the weather was b e c o m i n g increasingly overcast, cold, and windy. On the morning of Monday, 28 February, I woke up a little before 5:00 AM and observed that it was raining. When I got up at 6:30 AM, the rain had stopped and when I went to breakfast the sun was shining brightly. By the time I went to catch the tour bus to transfer me to connect to Gozo Island ferry it was 68

overcast again but became sunny as we approached the harbour at Cirkewwa. The ferry ride to Gozo Island did not take very long and I met the "hop on hop off' bus upon arriving at Mgarr Harbour on Gozo Island. The weather was gorgeous, and I exited the bus near the prehistoric megalithic Ggantija Temples. These are described as

the oldest freestanding structures in the world, and they date back to 3600-3000 BC. The largest monolith to be found at the Ggantija Temples weighs about fifty tons, and the temple walls reach a height of around seven meters. After visiting the Ggantija Temples, I

hopped back on the next bus and continued the "hop on hop off" bus tour of Gozo admiring the spectacular scenery. I exited the bus at the stop in Victoria and walked to the Citadel. The Citadel is situated upon one of the highest points on the island and has been fortified for many centuries. After exploring the Citadel, I returned to the bus stop and once again caught the next "hop on hop off" bus. I originally planned to take the bus tour of the entire island but to my dismay, there are three "hop on hop off" bus stops at the same location so when I caught the next bus, I missed out on visiting the portion of the island with the famous Azure Window rock 69

and instead passed through Xlendi, a small fishing village, before continuing on to Mgarr Harbour. The ferry back to Cirkewwa was a smooth ride and after a short wait, my transfer tour bus picked me up and delivered me back to Valletta. The weather all day on Gozo

orn in Valencia, Venezuela but currently live in Tampa, Florida. I'm bilingual, Spanish being my first language but speak English with ease. I'm a dedicated, loyal, Joyful, and persistent person who love challenges and fulfill the goals I set for myself. I'm a dreamer, in the name of humanity and in the things. I aspire to achieve and experience. I love to travel and expose myself to new people, new cultures, new places and new gastronomy. My favorite pastimes include reading classics, dancing, sewing, spending time with my family and also giving back to the community through cultural and social services. Modeling has been a dream of mine since I was a child, where I loved to pose in front of any type of camera. Modeling to me is being able to express the language of fashion and provide a mean to explore a place where different cultures are combined. Where fashion unites different aspects of the world, a model is the medium for such connection to be possible. 72

73

My fashion role model is Carolina Herrera because she overcame every seed of doubt and every obstacle that was placed in front of her. She surpassed the boundaries of fashion in her native Venezuela and went on to showcase her talent internationally. From her I learned that elegance was a matter of attitude and through which paradigm I wish to see the world. My mother also stands as my role model, proving to me that any dream is possible in proportion to how much passion and dedication I invest into it. I'm passionate towards both runaway and print modeling each providing me its own sense of contribution to the fashion world, whether through the pages of a magazine or the physical interaction between model, fashion and audience in a runway show. My aspirations within the modeling world do not stand short to my dreams. I want to be able to make a name for myself both locally and internationally, be on magazines and fashion shows, partake in fashion week, and most of all enjoy the thrill of the ride. I don't just want to be another model but rather 74

someone who can inspire another girl to be the connecting factor between ourselves and the spectacular world of fashion. Currently I'm in school to become an architect where I can be a spokesperson of our culture through the language of structures. Being Latina has influenced the majority of my life. I am proud of my Venezuelan culture and its values are seeped into my ideas of life, perseverance and hard work. I'm also a lover of all types of Hispanic music including Salsa and Merengue. I have never seen my heritage as a flaw but rather as my tool to guide me through life and to make my dreams a reality. 75

10 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR SKIN GLOWING,

SMOOTH & SOFT

W

e all look forward to winter season. It arrives with lovely sweaters, coffee, dry fruit and curling up by the heater. But with all the goodies, unfortunately winter season comes with dehydrated skin too. Winter weather is not fun for skin. Without immediate care, dry skin can lead to cracking and bleeding, and harsh winter wind makes the problem worse. Indoor heat further robs the air of moisture, as do hot showers or baths and harsh cleansers. A gentle exfoliator will clean dirt and debris from your skin before it becomes trapped in your pores and attract acne-causing bacteria, additional moisture helps, but you need to do more to actually counteract these effects and keep skin looking youthful and smooth. To reduce chapping, redness, itching, dead skin cells can make your face appear dull and keep your skin more healthy and comfortable this season, try these tips.

the skin slough off dead cularly on our hands. Yet f the dead cells are too ating mask and use it on ds, as well as gently on

your lips, then follow immediately with moisture to truly see a smoother difference. Exfoliating body washes are also helpful in the winter months but exfoliating just once or twice a week so as not do damage skin since it's more fragile during the winter.

MOISTURIZE Even if you're exfoliating weekly, your skin not only needs moisture, but moisture right after you wash. It's important to use moisturizer daily during the winter to help prevent dry, flaky skin. Apply it shortly after getting out of the shower to help lock in moisture and keep skin silky smooth. Go for an oil-based moisturizer than a waterbased solution, as it's more likely to help your skin retain moisture in the winter.

FOOT THERAPY Taking care of your hands and face are nobrainers when it comes to harsher weather, but don't forget about your feet! "In the winter months, make sure to slather feet nightly prior to bed and slip (them) into a pair of cotton socks before you fall asleep.

AVOID HOT WATER Hot showers and baths always feel good in the winter compared to the cold weather outside, don't turn up the water temperature too high. Luke-warm showers are the best way to go as hot ones will actually dehydrate your skin, particularly when just washing your face or hands, choose lukewarm water to avoid stripping as many oils away from the skin. 83

CHANGE YOUR CLEANSER

DRINK We tend to drink less water in the winter because we turn to hot drinks like cocoa and tea, but don't forget that your skin needs hydration from the inside, out. Making sure to drink plenty of water is key during winter moreover a little warm water with lemon can be very refreshing and hydrating at the same time.

HYDRATE FROM THE INSIDE OUT Eating foods high in water content can help hydrate your skin from the inside out. Make sure you're getting enough vitamin C and zinc to support the healthy production of collagen and elastin. Also consider an omega-3 supplement, or consume more fish to give your skin the building blocks it needs to appear supple and smooth.

Cleansers can be extremely drying to the skin. If you're used to using options that contain glycolic or salicylic acid, rotate with a more hydrating version that contains moisturizing ingredients. After cleansing, don't leave the skin naked for more than 30 seconds, as this can dehydrate it, leading to increased dryness. Apply a hydrating toner and moisturizer to seal in moisture

USE HOMEMADE MASKS Homemade hydrating masks can provide needed moisture in the winter months. Use natural moisturizing ingredients like honey, avocado, yogurt, olive and jojoba oils, almond oil, bananas, and aloe. Mix what you like together to create a cream or paste, and leave on skin for 10-30 minutes for lasting hydration.

In Horrible Bosses 2 what goes around comes around, except when it takes a wacky detour. Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis each suffered under abusive employers in the 2011 black comedy hit Horrible Bosses. But now the fortunes have turned as the gang is back together in Horrible Bosses 2. This time they are the managers from hell, but in the most inept way possible. Jamie Foxx returns in an expanded role, advising the crew in a plot to take Chris Pine's character hostage to ransom back the company. The original film's bad boss Kevin Spacey, now in prison for his business crimes, gets a visit from the three for advice. Jennifer Aniston returns as the sexual predator dentist Dr. Julia Harris, who even asks Jason Bateman's character to take a dump on her.

The movie Fury is set at the very end of World War II, in April 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. April, 1945.
