Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus

P

rime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif were prominent at the inauguration of the RawalpindiIslamabad Metro Bus system on Sunday, Federal Ministers, local MNAs, MPAs and government high officials have also attend the ground breaking ceremony. Rawalpindi/Islamabad Metro Bus Project is being implemented as per vision of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif with the objective of providing an international standard mass transit system to the twin cities of Federal Capital. “The nation will see positive developments with each passing day, he said, pointing to an array of projects that his government has planned over the next four years, including Karachi motorway, Islamabad-Muzaffarabad train service and new Islamabad

airport. He said the government was also working on a plan to end power outages and 22,000 megawatts of electricity would be added to the national grid over the next four years. The prime minister recalled that Pakistan witnessed brief stints of development when his party, the PMLN, was voted to power twice in the 1990s. In this context, he specifically referred to the country's nuclear p r o g r a m m e a n d t h e n e t wo r k o f wo r l d - c l a s s motorways. Going by the speed of the earlier Lahore metro bus project, there is ever y expectation that the Rawalpindi-Islamabad project too would be completed with dispatch. However, cutting a bus route through built up areas and possibly green belts has always proved controversial. The Rawalpindi leg of the metro bus route will run on an elevated road to avoid

6

as far as possible destruction of built up urban assets. In Islamabad it will run on the ground. However, the environmental concerns surrounding the project, especially in the Islamabad sector, refuse to go away. Legal challenges on the basis of such concerns have not been given relief by the courts because of national considerations, according to Shahbaz Sharif. Nevertheless the Capital Development Authority of Islamabad has been querying the start of the Rawalpindi leg of the route without clearing up its 12 reservations about the Environmental Impact Assessment Report by the National Engineering Services of Pakistan (Nespak). The green belts and cover along the Islamabad section of the bus route could be affected.Approval of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report by the Pakistan Environment Protection Agency is obligatory under the provisions of the Environment Protection Act 1997. Residents of Islamabad have voiced their concerns about the environmental impact, including on green belts and noise and pollution as a result of the plying buses. While dispatch is necessary for such projects to be competed efficiently and within budgeted costs, the country has to learn not to ignore environmental concerns if our cities are to avoid being converted into grey concrete jungles. A documentary shown on the occasion pointed out there will be no environmental impact of the project as no green area will be affected

during the construction of the project and it will not violate the master plan of Islamabad. It also showed the route of the metro bus that will start from Flashman's Hotel Chowk on Murree Road and end at Pakistan Secretariat covering a distance of 23.2 kilometres. From Faizabad, Rawalpindi, the bus will run on IJP Road, 9th Avenue and Jinnah Avenue, Blue Area and culminate near the Pakistan Secretariat. The track will have 24 modern terminals for passengers. Of these, 10 will be on Murree Road while 14 in Islamabad. Initially, 60 buses will ply from Rawalpindi to Islamabad catering to over 150,000 passengers. The Sharif brothers have traditionally been very keen on infrastructure projects, particularly motorways, roads, public transport, etc. These are of course important for economic development. But they tend to favour commerce and industry most, which may not be surprising considering that the Sharifs come from a business background. However, diversion of enormous funds to such projects means resources to fulfil the needs of the people, particularly the poor, are hard to come by. While such projects help improve the quality of the business environment in the country, the need to also improve the people's quality of life through education, health and other social services and facilities cannot be underestimated.

Technology POWER EFFICIENT & RELIABLE CARBON NANO TUBE CIRCUITS Engineers would love to create flexible electronic devices, such as ereaders that could be folded to fit into a pocket. One approach they are trying involves designing circuits based on electronic fiber, known as carbon nano tubes (CNTs), instead of rigid silicon chips. But reliability is essential. Most silicon chips are based on a type of circuit design that allows them to function flawlessly even when the device experiences power fluctuations. However, it is much more challenging to do so with CNT circuits.

Now a team at Stanford has developed a process to create flexible chips that can tolerate power fluctuations in much the same way as silicon circuitry. "This is the first time anyone has designed a flexible CNT circuits that have both high immunity to electrical noise and low power consumption, " said Zhenan Bao, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford with a courtesy appointment in Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering. The group reported its findings in the Proceedings of the

National Academy of Sciences. Huiliang (Evan) Wang, a graduate student in Bao's lab, and Peng Wei, a previous post doc in Bao's lab, were the lead authors of the paper. Bao's team also included Yi Cui, an associate professor of materials science at Stanford, and Hye Ryoung Lee, a graduate student in his lab. In principle, CNTs should be ideal for making flexible electronic circuitry. These ultra thin carbon filaments have the physical strength to take the wear and tear of bending, and the

8

electrical conductivity to perform any electronic task. But until this recent work from the Stanford team, flexible CNTs circuits didn't have the reliability and powerefficiency of rigid silicon chips. Here's the reason. Over time, engineers have discovered that electricity can travel through semiconductors in two different ways. It can jump from positive hole to positive hole, or it can push through a bunch of negative electronic like a beaded necklace. The first type

of semiconductor is called a P-type, the second is called and Ntype. Most importantly, engineers discovered that circuits based on a combination of P-type and N-type transistors perform reliably even when power fluctuations occur, and they also consume much less power. This type of circuit with both P-type and N-type transistors is called complementary circuit. Over the last 50 years engineers have become adept at creating this ideal blend of conductive pathways by changing the atomic

structure of silicon through the addition of minute amounts of useful substances -- a process called "doping" that is conceptually akin to what our ancestors did thousands of years ago when they stirred tin into molten copper to create bronze. The challenge facing the Stanford team was that CNTs are predominately P-type semiconductors and there was no easy way to dope these carbon filaments to add N-type characteristics. The PNAS paper explains how the Stanford engineers

9

overcame this challenge. They treated CNTs with a chemical dopant they developed known as DMBI, and they used an inkjet printer to deposit this substance in precise locations on the circuit. This marked the first time any flexible CNT circuit has been doped to create a P-N blend that can operate reliably despite power fluctuations and with low power consumption. The Stanford process also has some potential application to rigid CNTs. Although other engineers have previously doped rigid CNTs to create this immunity to electrical noise, the precise and finely tuned Stanford process out performs these prior efforts, suggesting that it could

be useful for both flexible and rigid CNT circuitry. Bao has focused her research on flexible CNTs, which compete with other experimental materials, such as specially formulated plastics, to become the foundation for bendable electronics, just as silicon has been the basis for rigid electronics.

filaments are the future of flexible electronics, because they are strong enough to bend and stretch, while also being capable of delivering faster performance than plastic circuitry. "CNTs offer the best long term electronic and physical attributes," Bao said.

As a relatively new material, CNTs are playing catch up to plastics, which are closer to mass market use for such things as bendable display screens. The Stanford doping process moves flexible CNTs closer toward commercialization because it shows how to create the P-N blend, and the resultant improvements in reliability and power consumption, already present in plastic circuits. Although much work lies ahead to make CNTs commercial, Bao believes these carbon

Tell us a little about your daily life. I try to wake up every day early cause I want to have a long day ahead of me and to a lot things. First I eat cornflakes and then go jogging cause I live next to the river so it's always nice to run here ,so many people and It gives me positive energy. Then I usually go to the college and depends if I have laboratory I will spend my whole day at the college and then go home eat something and go to the gym if I don't have college I would go to the gym or meet my friends in the city, we usually go to Starbucks next to the Oper or if the weather is nice we chill in the park or just go shopping - I'm a shopaholic. I s s t ay i n s h a p e important for you? Do you go to gym consistently? If so, how many times a week you hit the gym? I call myself gym bunny, I absolutely love to go to

the gym, it makes me feel so happy and when I see progress that's one of the best feelings ever. I think eating healthy and doing exercise is really important and you can release negative energy. Any advice for men out there how to dress as good as you? I think that first step is to love yourself and feel comfortable in your body and in the clothes t h a t y o u w e a r. I personally love dapper, preppy, dandy look because it's timeless, chic and classy and everyone should be classy. B e s i d e s bl og g i n g , what you like to do m o s t ? what items that you can't live without? As I already said - dapper ,dandy, preppy style - and items that I can't live without would be button up shirts and I can't get enough of them or shoes - love loafers and moccasins! Would you like to be famous? In what way? I like lux lifestyle but if I want to be famous I'm not so sure about it because I love my privacy and to do things that I want to do. If you are famous it's hard to have a private life cause of paparazzi and tabloids. Better really rich without being famous. So you can enjoy your luxe lifestyle without people taking picture of yourself no matter where you go. What do you expect you'll be in two years l a t e r ? As I already said I'm studying pharmacy and hope to get my master d e g r e e .

TRIP TO DUBAI 49

A

fter flying all night from Washington, DC, I arrived at Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at about 3:30 PM. The main objective of my long weekend trip was to determine if the Dubai International Airport might be a good choice as a place for me to connect to other places in southern Europe, the Middle East, and possibly India. After clearing Dubai immigration, I located an ATM in the shopping area adjacent to immigration and obtained some local currency, the Emirate Dirham which is commonly referred to as AED or DHS. I proceeded outside of the terminal to the taxi stand to get a local taxi. However, when I reached the podium where the man was directing people to the taxis, he directed me to a man with a Mercedes who took me to my hotel. I had booked a room at the H o l i d ay I n n E x p r e s s Jumeirah hotel near Jumeirah Beach. When we arrived at the hotel, I was

concerned that the hotel appeared to be situated in an industrial area some distance from a typical downtown location. After checking into my room, I decided to relax and unwind from more than twenty-three hours of flying. The view from my room looked toward the Persian Gulf and the Drydocks World - Dubai facility. The shipyard is the largest facility in the Middle East and is the flagship company of the Dubai World subsidiary Drydocks World. Some of the workers at the shipyard were also staying at the hotel. When I went to see about finding a restaurant for dinner, the hotel staff directed me to the large hotel restaurant which offered a full buffet dinner for 69 AED, including beverages. The buffet consisted of soup, salad bar, a variety of main dishes from different countries, and deserts. Many of the shipyard workers ate dinner there, and the

buffet served different main dishes ever y evening. I was very happy with the inexpensive buffet dinner and ate there every evening. The next day I went for Dubai City tour, it took about six hours and was very well done. A small van picked me up at my h o t e l o n S a t u r d ay morning and drove to Dubai Creek where we joined another group of people in a larger bus. Dubai Creek is a

saltwater creek that ends at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. It was dredged to become a harbor for Dubai and it remains the home of smaller port facilities, such as Port Saeed. We continued from Dubai Creek to the Al Fahidi Fort in Bastakia. The fort is over 180 years old and also the home of the Dubai Museum. The museum extends underground and has wonderful exhibits of early times in Dubai. Our next stop was at the large gold souk where many shops displayed elaborate gold jewelry. One shop displayed an enormous gold ring that is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest golden ring. The current price of gold was posted by carat per gram at locations throughout the gold souk. I was also impressed with the elaborate shoes and clothing for women on display in the gold souk. We continued on to the Grand Jumeirah Mosque and Jumeriah Beach, where we were able to photograph the famous Burj Al Arab hotel, before continuing to the Madinath Jumeriah resort complex, where we made a quick u-turn in the first entrance driveway. We proceeded to the famous man-made island, The Palm. We stopped for photos at the ocean side of the Atlantis hotel at the far end of The Palm. The

Atlantis, The Palm hotel, is frequently referred to as being the only sevenstar hotel in the world. There are lunch and dinner tours available for people who want to enter the hotel.

While on the city tour, I received an SMS text message from the tour office that I had requested an Internet booking for an East Coast tour for Sunday, September15. The SMS text confi rmed my request and, after returning to my hotel, I formally booked the tour by email. The tour normally required a minimum of two people but, since I was alone, my booking involved paying some additional AED.

We continued on to Burj K h a l i fe , t h e t a l l e s t structure in the world, standing 2,722 feet tall with more than 160 floors.We were only able to photograph Burj Khalife from a distance.
