ANUSHKA SHARMA JOHNNY DEPP’S BREAK-UP WIFE AMBER HEARD Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma parted ways on a quite bitter note last month. So much that Virat even went around at a party claiming that he's single and ready to mingle. But then again, although Virat's actions definitely were a giveaway, both Virat and Anushka maintained a staunch silence on the entire issue. The couple didn't want the unnecessary media attention and therefore decided to not talk about their relationship in public. But the truth is they have indeed broken up and aren't in touch anymore. At a time when both the celebrities were mum about their relationship going kaput, someone just confirmed the news. Someone close to both Anushka and Virat. Who's it? Ayushmann Khurrana. Yes, the Bollywood hero recently revealed the same during the India v/s Pakistan match at the Asia Cup 2016 which took place on Saturday. After losing three quick wickets, it was Virat Kohli who shouldered his team to victory. FACING CHARGES FOR DOG SMUGGLING

Johnny Depp dealt with a lot of drama while he was filming in Australia last year. However, it seems despite the fact that he's facing backlash for smuggling his dogs down under, the 52-year-old still has a soft spot for the country/continent. In case you forgot, the Pirates of Caribbean star and his wife Amber Heard got into a bit of hot water with Barnaby Joyce, the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, when they failed to properly follow the quarantine laws for their two Yorkshire terriers last May. The pups, Boo and Pistol, were quickly sent back to the states since they could've been put down. Yikes! Unfortunately, the A-listers are still dealing with the legal fallout from this incident. Nonetheless, it appears as though the drama might settle sooner than later. When asked if he'd return to the land of the plenty, Johnny replied: “Of course. I love Australia."

LEONARDO DICAPRIO FINALLY WINS BEST ACTOR OSCAR Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of a betrayed 19th-century frontiersman seeking revenge in The Revenant has won him his first Academy Award, having missed out on four previous occasions. The 41-year-old actor was the favourite to win after picking up both a Golden Globe and a Bafta for his performance. The film, which has won a number of awards at this year’s ceremony, tells the true story of Hugh Glass, who battled his way through the wilderness after being left for dead. DiCaprio beat out competition from last year’s winner Eddie Redmayne and Michael Fassbender. He had previously been nominated for his work in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, The Aviator, Blood Diamond and The Wolf of Wall Street. He used his speech to warn about the effects of global warming. “Climate change is real and it’s happening right now,” he said. “It’s the most urgent threat affecting our species.” He added: “Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take this night for granted.”

SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY ANOTHER

OSCAR

Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy wasted no time on stage at the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday night before launching into a powerful speech about the power of film to make tangible change in people's lives. "I think it's important to see what human beings are capable of," said the filmmaker. Obaid-Chinoy, who now lives in Pakistan but has spent a lot of time going between Toronto and her home country, said her work has prompted difficult conversations that often risked her life but that there is "payback" in doing so.

TECHNOLOGY

LOON COPTER DRONE FLIES, FLOATS & DIVES UNDERWATER

A

long with the usual flying drones, there are also models that can move along the surface of the water like boats, that can explore underwater like submarines, or that can even both flyandfloat. As is the case with its feathered namesake, however, Oakland University's Loon Copter can fly, land on the water to see what's under the surface, and then dive down to check out what it sees. The Loon flies in the same fashion as any other quadcopter, and initially floats when it comes to rest on the water. It can then simply sit in one spot, or it can use its props to push itself along the surface. The real fun starts when it pumps water into its buoyancy chamber, though, causing it to sink. Instead of submerging straight down, the Loon actually tips to one side as it sinks. It then re-engages its props, allowing them to pull it top-first through the water. While it's underwater, it can turn to either side, dive or ascend using its water ballast system, and record video or gather other data as it does so. Once it's time to get airborne again, it just pumps out its buoyancy chamber, causing it to float back to the surface and swing into position. In its current prototype form, the untethered drone's underwater remote control range is limited to a depth of a few meters. Its video also can't be transmitted topside, and is instead recorded onboard for subsequent viewing. Down the road, however, all that could change. "We are looking into acoustic modems, repeater buoys, and some other techniques that could allow streaming of live

16 EMAL MaGazine

video for operator feedback as well as data and control commands," lead scientist Dr. Osamah Rawashdeh tells us. "For open-water applications, we can have the vehicle dive at predefined GPS points to various depths autonomously and follow some pre-programmed movement patters underwater to collect data or video footage." It's all very intriguing, but what might the drone actually be used for? According to Rawashdeh (who previously helped bring us the Autobike), possible applications include search-and-rescue operations, bridge foundation inspections, underwater pipeline inspections, tracking of oil spills at different depths, and marine life studies. It has even been suggested that the Loon could spot sharks from the air, then land in the water and use a deterrent system to chase them away from nearby swimmers. Given the way that this sort of technology progresses, perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise that the Loon isn't the only flying/diving drone out there – both Georgia Tech and Rutgers University have recently announced versions of their own. While Georgia Tech's GTQ-Cormorant simply sinks and rises straight up and down like a diving bell, Rutgers' Naviator is considerably closer to the Loon in functionality. That said, Rawashdeh notes that it uses its props instead of a ballast system to dive and surface, plus it doesn't float. "The Loon Copter can loiter on the surface of the water without energy usage," he says. "It can also change and control depth with little power (no propeller use). Not having to use propellers to change depth or resurface also has an advantage when obstacles (e.g: structures or vegetation) are close to the drone. We can resurface without hitting any obstacles." Rawashdeh and his team will be in Dubai next month, where the Loon will be one of 10 finalists in the Drones for Good competition. The drone can be seen flying, floating and diving in the following video.

INTERVIEW

TORE OPDAL HANSEN MAYOR OF DRAMMEN Norway is a very long and narrow country situated at the northern tip of Europe. It extends 1770km/ 1100 miles from south to north, a distance equal to that from Oslo to Rome or from New York to Miami, crossing the country Norway, i.e. the way to North. During the last decades, however, Norway has made itself visible to the rest of the world through its innovative ideas and technologies, its booming oil industry and active participation in areas such as environmental protection and energy management. Today cultural life in Norway finds expression in a variety of different fields such as the theatre, films, music, painting, arts and crafts, folk dancing and literature.

DRAMMEN One of the larger city of Norway. In 2008 Drammen won the prestigious prize for the best city development in Europe. Norway’s waterfront capital Oslo is buffered by heather-screwn islands and dense wedges of tranquil woodlands. The splintered shards that form the listening Oslo Opera House showcase the city’s cosmopolitan character. Brightly coloured wood-panel houses flank Bergen's bustling harbour; its cluster of museums and galleries distinguish it as Norway's cultural capital. The northern city of Tromso is enveloped by snow-capped mountains and birch trees. Shrouded in perpetual darkness in winter, it dazzles defiantly under the ethereal shimmer of the Northern Lights. Drammen which is one of the larger city of Norway, and lies about 40 km from the capital of Norway, Oslo. The city centre lies at the end of a valley, on both sides of the Drammenselva River, and where the river meets the Drammensfjord. Drammen is also the main harbour for car and fruit import in Norway. Drammen is an industrial city in Buskerud County, of Norway. It is the home of more than 65 000 people, but the city is the regional capital of an area with 160,000 people. Drammen has a multi cultural population, where about 20% of the population has an immigrant background. This puts a diverse and colourful touch to the urban landscape. Tore Opdal Hansen is a Norwegian politician, presently mayor of Drammen, was born in august 4 -1956. He has been a member of Drammen City Council from 1980. He is the

mayor of Drammen since 2003. Hansen has been a popular mayor and had the support of the other non-socialist parties in Drammen. Hansen was in the military in 1978, before he became mayor; Hansen took a specialized course in marketing. He has sold cars and had serve as a truck driver in 1979. Drammen is an international city and 25% of the population is of immigrant origin, more than 16,000 people are from close to 140 countries. The impact of this can be seen in cultural festivals and events, in theatres, music and art, businesses and trade. Drammen is growing, international, vibrant city with great diversity. The city offers a unique mix of urban qualities, with culture and life in the city and recreation and adventures in the woods or along the river. Mayor have focused on urban development, benefitting today from this, that people are moving to Drammen and that businesses find attractive city and region. Drammen should be an inclusive city, where all citizens are viewed as resources. Tore Opdal Hansen has been involved extensively in Town Monntain the most multi cultural city of Drammen. Sports halls, upgrading Fjell School and beautification of the district's streets nad green spaces measures in focus. But most importantly, measures to reduce poverty, and has set a goal to improve living conditions for the inhabitants of Fjell. Hansen for long time has supported that the Muslims can get their mosque at Fjell.

His message for Drammen I'm pleased you have chosen Drammen as your new home and I'm confident that you will contribute to the development of our city. We are proud of our diversity and intend to use this as an asset in future development of the city. Diversity drives creativity and innovation and enriches to the city’s social, economic, and cultural vibrancy. TRAVEL&TOURISM

LARRY FOGG TRIP TO CHINA

I

decided to travel to China to visit Hangzhou City and to hike on Mount Huangshan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the five sacred Taoist mountains in China. I arrived at Chengdu, China, on Sunday, 26 April. After clearing immigration, I exited the terminal and took a local taxi to my hotel. I spent the following day resting up from the long flights from Los Angeles to Chengdu. Tuesday, 28 April, was a travel day where I flew from Chengdu to Hangzhou and settled into my hotel. I went to visit West Lake National Park in Hangzhou on Wednesday, 29 April. West Lake National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and receives mixed reviews from tourists. The landscaping adjacent to the lake was very beautiful with flowers in full bloom. I arrived at the northeast corner of the lake and took a small boat rowed by one man for a one-hour tour of the north end of the lake over to the famous bridge at the north end of the Bai Causeway. After disembarking from the small boat, I purchased a ticket on one of the local ferryboats to go to Xiaoyingzhou Isle, a small island in the center of the lake. The island contains an architectural complex dating from 1723-1735 and consisting of the Nanshu Pavilion, Yingcui Veranda, & Huaniao Hall. I disembarked at the island and admired the beautiful architecture and scenery. I boarded another local ferry that took me from the island to Zhongshan Park at the southern end of the Bai Causeway. The remains of the Temporary Imperial Palace of the Qing Dynasty are situated at Zhongshan Park. It was a very nice place to explore with lush vegetation amid the ruins of the palace. After visiting the palace, I took an electric shuttle bus to the north end of the Bai Causeway and walked along the north end of the lake. After visiting West Lake, I walked from the northeast corner of the lake into Hangzhou City and found a small restaurant where I purchased beef and noodles for lunch. With the help of my map and several local pedestrians, I was able to walk back to my hotel in about forty minutes. On Thursday, 30 April, I took a bus from Hangzhou City to Huangshan City and checked into the Crowne Plaza hotel for three nights. After checking into the hotel, I was able to arrange for a hotel car to take me to Mount Huangshan early the following morning. On Friday, the hotel car drove me to the Huangshan Tourist Center at the southern entrance to Mount Huangshan where I purchased my ticket for the tourist bus up to the Yungu Cableway Station. Since May 1 is the first day a of major three day national holiday in China when many Chinese people travel for sightseeing, the crowds at Huangshan were massive and I was glad that I had already booked a room at the Beijai Hotel for the night on top of the mountain. There are two cableways from the Huangshan southern entrance to the top of the mountain but the Yuping Cableway was closed for repairs which effectively doubled the number of people wanting to take the Yungu Cableway. After arriving at the Yungu Cableway station, I purchased my admission ticket to Huangshan and my ticket for the cableway. I then joined in one of the largest queues I have ever seen to wait to board

the cableway. The wait to board the cable car was in excess of 90 minutes even though each cableway car could carry eight persons. After boarding a cableway car, the views during the journey to the top were spectacular. Once I exited the cableway station, I took some very scenic photos and began hiking mostly downhill for about one kilometer until I reached the Beiloit Hotel where I checked into my room for the night and purchased lunch at the hotel restaurant. After lunch, I began hiking both up and downhill to visit the “Flying Over Rock” which is probably one of the most spectacular sights associated with Huangshan Mountain and was one of the main reasons that I wanted to visit Huangshan. The scenery en route to “Flying Over Rock” was spectacular and the seven-kilometer roundtrip hike from the Beiloit Hotel was strenuous. It began to mist light rain during the last kilometer back to the hotel. The mist then developed into torrential rain and thunderstorms during the night. I was very happy that I decided to hike to “Flying Over Rock” during the prior afternoon in picture perfect weather. After breakfast the next day, I purchased a lightweight plastic rain suit at a shop in the hotel and began the one-kilometer,

mostly uphill, hike back to the Yungu Cableway in heavy rain. I was amazed at the constant flow of people who were just arriving to visit Huangshan and who were going the opposite direction from me. After reaching the lower cableway station, I purchased my ticket for the commuter bus back to the southern entrance tourist center and then took a local taxi back to my hotel in Huangshan City. It continued raining the remainder of the day at Huangshan City while I spent the remainder of the day drying out my wet clothes and shoes in my hotel room. I took the bus back to Hangzhou on Sunday, 3 May. The weather was nice at Hangzhou City as I went to visit a portion of the Hangzhou section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the longest canal of artificial river in the world. The oldest parts of the canal date back to the 5th Century BC. Today the Hangzhou portion of the canal is known as the Jiangnan Canal and is the southernmost section of the canal. There were some park-like areas adjacent to the section of the canal that I visited with many beautiful flowers blooming.

I went to visit the Grottoes at Feilai Peak and the Lingyin Temple on Monday, 4 May. These are situated to the west of West Lake. The Grottoes at Feilai Peak are one of the most representative historical sites of Buddhist culture of the West Lake landscape. They are located at the southern base of the northern peak of Feilai Mountain, opposite the Lingyin Temple and alongside Lengquan Brook. They are mainly situated on the 500 meter-long cliff along the brook and in natural caves such as Qinglin Cave and Longhong Cave. The statues were first carved in 951 CE and at the present time there are 390 statues in 115 niches carved into the limestone mountain. The statues integrate both Han Chinese and Tibetan styles of Buddhist statues and manifest the thriving Buddhist culture in Hangzhou from the 10th to the 13th centuries. During February 1982, the Chinese Government listed the Grottoes at Feilai Peak as a cultural relic. The Lingyin Temple is one of the representative historic sites of Buddhist culture in the West Lake area. It is said that the temple was first built by an Indian monk, Huili, in 326 CE. As the earliest Buddhist building complex in the Hangzhou area, it enjoyed a remarkable status during the period of “Buddhist Realm in Southeastern China” during the 10th to 13th centuries. The temple is still considered to be one of the most important locations of Buddhist activities in the southeastern coastal regions of China. The temple is very large and extends upward along the northern side of the southern peak of Feilai Mountain. Both the Lingyin Temple and the Grottos at Feilai Peak are easy to get to and are well worth visiting when sightseeing at Hangzhou. Tuesday, 5 May, was another travel day where I flew back to Chengdu. On Wednesday, May 6, I visited the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The research base is like a very large park with a museum, a lake, and a rose garden in addition to the research facilities for both Red Pandas and Giant Pandas. It is listed as a National AAAA Scenic Area and has received the “Global 500” Award from the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP). I spent nearly five hours at the research base and recommend it as a very good place to visit when in Chengdu. On Wednesday, 7 May, I visited the Chengdu Zoo. Although the zoo has previously received many awards, I was disappointed that it seemed to be in a somewhat run-down condition. The clear partitions that separated the people from the animals and reptiles were very dirty and, in my opinion, it was not nearly as nice and well maintained as the Chongqing Zoo which I visited during April 2013. I flew back home to Los Angeles on Thursday, 8 May. During the flights home, I reflected on my trip and was very happy that after visiting Mount Huangshan, I have had the satisfaction of hiking upon four of the five sacred mountains in China since August 2012.

Create a “New Decade” oath Now it's time to make a big resolution instead of New Year's, you start the new decade for the "next 10 years". It's the moment to forget the bad habits and pick up the good ones. Drop excessive use of sugar, salt or whatever [your vice is]. If you carry your bad habits after 30, it will only be harder to quit. It's the time for a foundation. You're building a building. Finish the foundation by the time you're 30.

Bestow Time to Yourself Make sure you have a moment of solitude. The relationship that you're building with yourself, that's your building. Give some time to your health, your looks, your positive thoughts to enhance yourself. Enjoy you and enjoy who you are.

Stretch Daily The one thing, which I would definitely recommend is to do some kind of stretching, weather its aerobics or yoga. It's good for your body, it's good for your mind, and it's a wonderful thing to do, it makes you feel fresh and energetic. Make time to do it—and then do it. Make sure this is the last time you think that you have bad posture. Thirty is the last call for bad habits.

Leave Your Hair Alone Everyone has different hair with different issues. Try to avoid major things that will stop your hair from being healthy. Try to use organic hair products and do twice a week message with hot oil.

Eat to Nourish Your Body You are what you eat. It's as simple as that. Eat fruit in the morning, eat lots of vegetables, avoid wheat, avoid sugar. That doesn't mean you have to be perfect, but just enjoy being healthy. You only have one health, and your body is what you eat and what you do to it.

Put on Sunscreen Avoid the sun more to prevent early signs of skin aging. Protect yourself by using a good sunscreen to avoid the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.

Keep a record Keep a diary it can be a visual diary like Instagram or a written one because you'll be so happy to look back and read the adventure of your life. Live life fully and don't be afraid to push the doors that are open.

Lean into Your Makeup Bag 30 is when you are a full woman, be the woman you want to be. If you like makeup, wear a lot of it. If you don't, don't. Take away the things that you do that aren't really you. Remember who you are and stick to it. But that doesn't mean you can't experiment all the time.

IT S A NEW SEASON OF BEAUTY..... And it could be you! Want to be featured in an upcoming issues of EMAL? Mail us on emal@emalmag.com
