Small-Brained Elephantnose Fish can Think Big Like Humans African elephantnose fish can swap between its electrical and visual senses in the same way a person can switch between sight and touch. Fish may be smarter than we thought. Not only can some recognize human faces, but others can use their senses in a way that it was believed only humans and other mammals could manage. A team of zoologists at the University of Bonn has discovered that, despite lacking a complex brain, the African elephantnose fish can swap between its electrical and visual senses in the same way a person can switch between sight and touch.
What the researchers found is that the fish could recognize objects electrically that they had only seen visually, In addition, they favored whichever sense was most reliable at the time with the electrical sense dominating when the object was close up, while vision dominated with distant objects. The fish were started in the experiments with the lights on, where they could use both senses, then in the dark. With the lights off, the team could see that the fish found their goal, but only at short range – indicating that it was using its electrical sense. The scientists then made the objects electrically invisible, so the fish could use only sight and repeated the experiment.
The ability to recognize objects across different is senses is regarded as an evolutionary plus because it provides the animal with greater sensory flexibility in different environments. However, it's been thought that this ability was confined to certain highly developed mammals, including monkeys, dolphins, rats, and humans, because the information processing was thought to According to Bonn, statistical analyses showed identical require a cerebral cortex. That is, until the elephantnose fish performance as they swapped between vision and electrical came along. impulses. Also, they did it with a consistency that indicates Peters' elephantnose fish (Gnathonemus petersii) is common to that all elephantnose fish share this talent. the slower rivers of West Africa, where it hunts for insect larvae As to why the elephantnose can do this, the Bonn team just before dawn and after sunset. It's also one of a number of fish hasn't speculated, but it could be that the fish uses a equipped with an electrical organ that allows it to generate a weak specialized algorithm or processing system, the job of electrical field that allows it to sense its immediate environment sense-swapping is less complex than believed, or fish are like a living motion detector. It also has eyes that it uses to just really clever. navigate as well as to track and catch its supper. What the Bonn team found was that the elephantnose can switch between these two senses despite having a tiny brain. People and animals can navigate a darkened room by touch, hearing, or even smell, and then switch immediately to sight when the lights come on without having to reassess their surroundings. This was thought to require the cerebral cortex of the mammalian brain, but the elephantnose fish doesn't have a cerebral cortex and seems to manage it like a ZX-80 running Windows 10. To study this phenomenon, the zoologists took 10 fish and taught them how to recognize objects using both their visual and electrical senses. They did this using an aquarium separated into two chambers that held a sphere and a cuboid object. Each fish was introduced to the aquarium and taught to select one or the other object with rewards of larvae.

A
s smartwatches get more popular, it will be interesting to see how traditional watchmakers react. Tag Heuer is getting a jump on some of its rivals by launching a US$1,500 Android Wear watch that stands as the first from a Swiss watch-making company. Tag Heuer Connected is an interesting proposition. On one hand, it's a smartwatch with the cred of a 155-yearold Swiss watchmaker, and the craftsmanship you'd expect from such a timepiece. But on the other hand, well, it's a friggin' Android Wear watch that costs $1,500. If smartwatches from tech companies still looked like they did a year and a half ago, then this might be seen as a breakthrough. But companies like Huawei, LG, Motorola and Apple have shown that tech companies can make some stylish and beautiful watches on their own – and all but Apple's Edition models cost less than that (usually by a wide margin). Tag Heuer Connected is the first Android Wear watch with a titanium casing, and it joins the Huawei Watch as the second with a sapphire display. Its band is made of vulcanized rubber and includes a titanium folding clasp. If the watch's design doesn't entice you to fork over $1,500, then don't expects its tech to do anything to change that. It has a round 1.5-inch display with 360 x 360 resolution (240 PPI). It is the first Android Wear watch with an Intel processor, a 1.6 GHz dual core chip and is also the first Android Wear watch with 1 GB of RAM (every previous one has had 512 MB). Tag Heuer estimates a minimum 25 hours uptime for its 410 mAh battery with typical usage. Those are some good, solid specs for an Android Wear watch, but not significantly better than rivals that run in the $300-400 range.
If you're shopping for a smartwatch, and don't fancy yourself a Swiss watch geek, then this probably isn't the product for you. Think of Connected less as as something you'll consider next to the Huawei Watch or Moto 360, and more for folks who already appreciate traditional Swiss watch craftsmanship and are intrigued by adding some smarts to that equation. For anyone else, it's hard to see how that price can be justified. Tag Heuer Connected is available to order today, online and in Tag Heuer stores. It ships with a black case and a choice of seven band colors (though only the black strap is available for online orders).

A CHAT WITH ALI RIAZ
DT ECENT FURNISHERS F HE STYLE TYCOON OF URNITURE INDUSTRY
TURNING IDEAS INTO ACTIONS 'We are projecting ambiance and not just furniture.' Said Mr. Ali Riaz , CEO of Decent Furniture shares about his journey that led to Ambiance and his love for craftsmanship. With over six decades of experience in premium furniture making; we have finally stepped out from their comfort zone and humble abode in Gujrat to test rushing waters of mega metropolises; Lahore and UK. One of the golden rules to venture in a big city is to abide by the basic principle of going a step ahead from others. The common complaint for any store not doing well is that it refuses to move on with the changing times. 'We call the expansion of our brand in foreign market as our biggest achievement,' said Ali Riaz while talking to EMAL International Magazine. This is precisely Ambiance by Decent Furnishers offers wide horizons for its shoppers here in Lahore and promises to be a one-stop solution in of fering decorative accessories, art work, household textiles, tapestry apart from an amazing furniture range on display.
I did my Masters in International Business from Monash University, Melbourne Australia. I joined my Family business in 2004 expanded it to UK and developed it by establishing complete Villas in UAE. With the business degree in hand, I changed the company's business strategy and focused more on Domestic and corporate market which
results in a rapid growth and the milestone was achieved after getting recognition from banking sector, universities, Government, Sami Government on a permanent basis.

appeal. 'It took us a year to choose an ideal location to open our store in Lahore. We were initially inclined towards a showroom at MM Alam road but this place has its own charm,' Ali told. Expecting a niche clientele Ali sought help from his older brother Ahmad Riaz who is an architect from NCA. The duo combo began to work diligently in setting up the place and also traveled abroad to bring a design aesthetic that is uncommon for most people here.Having a fetish for perfection comes out in form of attention to detailing to various aspects of the store. The front entrance is predominantly the focal point of the premises having an extensive view of the items on display. The owners' penchant for heavy wooden furnishings doesn't in any way over shadow the look instead they have cleverly mixed and matched t h e f u r n i t u r e w i t h s i l ve r wa r e accessories which adds glamour to the area.
Why it took longer then expected? 'Everything was getting into so much detailing that the project which was supposed to finish in a month took much longer than anticipated.' The bush hammering method done on the walls for instance and side wall made of fiber each tile is made individually while the silver effect projects a luxurious impact. The elevated pedestal hosts a grand furniture display made rustic with wooden planks joined together on the floor, wall and the roof with small pebbles strewn around. Revealing gigantic sized mirrors dot the entire place and strategically placed planters for an instant charm. With modern classic lines done in rosewood, sheeshum and mahogany the designs are further complimented by rich detailing in the form of carvings and hand work.
What's the point that differentiates you from others? What is so special you are offering? 'It's not just about putting a Versace sofa What part of the project excites you the in every room. We are offering a most? coordinated theme and proud to call it as One case in point is the staircase that takes one to the mezzanine floor 'Tricky staircase done up in two tones gives a very complete look. We have used oil paint to kill the blank look and break the monotony,' while explaining about the significance of this technique Ali mentioned that the oil paint technique makes usage of enamel base and one can move it around. 'There's a lighter tone at one end and a darker on the other so it gives a floating sort and then blends into the wall for a fuller affect.' It is impossible not to admire the wall affects set in milieu of the carved diwans, mahogany chest of drawers, solid wood bed sets, coffee tables and cabinets with detailed woodwork.

a one stop solution.' The coveted line gets a further strengthening by adding tapestry and curtain drapery section in the basement. The duo handpicked items for curtain dressing from Turkey. They are certain pieces which are exorbitantly priced but they are aiming for a niche market. 'There was a time when people used to buy seven piece sofas but now they like to combine exclusive one-off pieces. Everybody without an iota of knowledge on furniture is making it so we have made a lot of investment in making our production line very strong,' said Ali. The silver plated Indian accessories and widest selection of decor elements including lamps, vases and mirrors give a loud statement and change the overall look of any room. The availability of silver ware accessories not to be found elsewhere becomes a well worth effort and one should head out to catch a glance. What's more that they have displayed art work from renowned artists and hand knotted carpets for the shopper to make full advantage of his or her visit. Beautiful lamps, wall art and opulent furniture boasting the workmanship of skilled workers gives any house a decadent regal class. So whether one wants to create a spectacle decorating the whole house, your private bedroom or workplace the elements at Ambiance encompasses a perfecting milieu and a shoppers' haven- an ideal spot filled with character and warmth. It's hard not be awed by the quality of the products on display and precision to detailing.

TRAVEL&TOURISM
L ARRY F OGG TRIP TO SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
I
flew to Sydney, Australia, on July 6th for a long weekend visit primarily to hopefully tour the tall ship HMB (Her Majesties Bark) Endeavour which is normally docked at the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour in Sydney. The current HMB Endeavour is a replica of the original circa 1780s HMB Endeavour, the vessel that Captain James Cook sailed during his famous world-wide voyages. I had visited the Endeavour during July 2009 but was unable to tour the ship because it was undergoing a refit program to replace one or more of the masts. I arrived at Sydney early morning on July 7th and took the train from the airport to Central Station. Since it had been raining, and rain continued to look imminent, I elected to hire a taxi to the Holiday Inn Darling Harbour hotel. I chose this hotel because it was located nearby most of the places that I intended to visit. Since my room would not be available for several hours, I checked my luggage with the hotel concierge and walked to the Australian National Maritime Museum to verify that the Endeavour was in port and returned to the hotel as it began raining once again. The rain continued most of the day and into the evening. The following morning was cloudy as I returned to the maritime museum and was finally able to board the Endeavour. The ship is magnificent and the museum has volunteers stationed at different parts of the ship to give historical information and to answer questions from the visitors. According to the museum brochure, there are 18 miles of rope, 750 wooden blocks, and 28 sails spreading 10,000 square feet of canvas. The foremast is 119 feet, 11 inches; the main mast is 127 feet, 11 inches; and the mizzen mast is 78 feet, 9 inches, all made from Douglas Fir. The windlass with its two red carved sailor heads raises and lowers the anchors – the two largest anchors weigh nearly one ton each. The ship’s bell marked time and was struck each half hour. Eight bells started and ended each four-hour watch. The lower deck extends the full length of the ship. The firehearth area is situated below the foredeck area

and near the forward end of the lower deck. It contains the huge iron stove (firehearth) that was state-of-the-art in 1768 where all of the food was cooked. The cabins and workshops around the firehearth belonged to the carpenter, boatswain, and sailmaker. The crew’s mess deck, with swinging tables and hammocks, was situated just aft of the firehearth area. Each sailor had just 14 inches in which to sling his hammock at night – these were taken down and stowed each morning. Today, 36 voyage crew sail with the ship, relaxing and sleeping here in their numbered hammocks just as Cook’s men did in the 18th century. The midshipmen/mates’ mess and officers' cabins are situated aft of the crew mess deck area and extend to the stern of the ship. The after deck was situated directly above the lower deck area occupied by the midshipmen/mates’ mess and officers cabins. The after deck contains the great cabin, the captain’s and gentlemen’s cabins. The area between the cabins was the commissioned officers’ mess.

The quarter deck was at the stern of the ship and was the preserve of the captain and officers. There is a large capstan (a vertical winch) that was used to hoist heavy spars and yards and to maneuver the ship at anchor. Ten wooden bars are inserted and pushed around by up to thirty sailors – this still operates by muscle power today. The wheel (helm) is manned by two helmsmen, one on each side. It is connected to the tiller by ropes which run around the large wooden drum and through a set of blocks. Pens for sheep, pigs, and poultry were kept at the stern. Some areas of the ship were not accessible during my tour. These included the hold at the bottom of the ship and modern additions such as the engine room and the 21st century deck with showers and marine toilets.

The sun actually came out while I was touring the ship and then the clouds began to reappear as I entered the maritime museum to have a look at the new temporary exhibits that were not present last year. As I left the museum to walk back to my hotel, light misty rain began to fall. Shortly after I arrived back at my hotel heavy rain resumed and continued for the remainder of the day. Saturday morning was once again cloudy so I decided to walk to the Powerhouse Museum – the museum for science and design. It is advertised as one of the most popular museums in Australia. One of the highlights was a vast collection of steam powered devices including the first locomotive in New South Wales, the Boulton & Watt engine, a steam powered carousel, stand alone steam engines, and many industrial machines from the age of steam power. I was intrigued by a huge box kite that appeared to be used for flying a person to altitude. The air and space section had replicas of a Russian lunar surface explorer, space capsules, and a weightless laboratory that visitors could enter and experience an illusion of being weightless. Another of the museums favorite attractions is the Strasburg Clock model built by a Sydney clockmaker, Richard B. Smith, at the age of 25 as a centenary ‘gift’ to the state of New South Wales. He began work on Australia Day in 1897 and three years later the clock was on display at the Technological Museum (as the Powerhouse Museum was then called).

2016
HAIRCUT DIRECTORY Tere's no better way to spark joy in the eyes of a hairdresser than to tell them you're thinking of "a drastic change" when you sit down in the chair. Forget the couple-of-inches-at-most trim, this is the season to go in for the killer cut - choosing a statement style that will transform the way you think, dress, do your makeup‌ It can even transform your career if the spring/summer 2016 catwalks are anything to go by just look at Peyton Knight, who let Guido Palau chop inches off her hair backstage at Alexander Wang to create the perky pageboy style which subsequently landed her a Gucci campaign. This was the season of the "wow" cut - where models with unusual and different styles saw themselves celebrated, rather than subjected to reams of extensions.
The Mica The quintessential cool girl, Argentinian model Mica Arganaraz is instantly recognisable on the catwalk thanks to her nonchalant shag hairstyle, complete with curly fringe worn falling into her eyes for the ultimate don't-care chic. Could you wear it? If you have curly hair, why not?
The Peyton Chiming perfectly with Gucci's geek-chic aesthetic, Peyton Knight's pageboy style, cut in by Guido Palau at the Alexander Wang show just a couple of weeks previously, is the perfect embodiment of fashion's new mood. Could you wear it? It's more versatile than you think (add salt spray and texturising paste for a choppy alternative), but you'll need straight hair to begin with.

The Isabella A new boyish take on the pixie crop, Isabella Emmack's no-fuss tomboy style is the perfect way to give spring's ultra-pretty sun dresses a masculine twist. Could you wear it? It takes guts to go for the chop, but if there was ever a season for it this is it.
The Marjan The wavy-haired girl's equivalent of The Mica, Marjan Jonkman's tousled waves and eye-skimming fringe have a punk sensibility that make the style feel utterly modern. The platinum hue helps too. Could you wear it? Yes, it's easy to maintain but packs a style punch. And you can always grow out the fringe if it gets on your nerves.

TRENDS YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR SUMMER What were the big style takeaways from the catwalks in London, Milan and Paris? Here we break down the big menswear trends you need to know for spring/summer 2016.
GO FOR KNEE-SKIMMING SHORTS
While we saw plenty of sporty, Sevenites-style thigh-grazers on the catwalks, perhaps the more wearable shor ts trend this summer is something slightly longer. The majority of shorts hit bang-on knee length, and were either tailored slim without a turn-up and pressed with a crease or cut from something more breathable, such as silk. Patterns were big, but navy was the king colour for the season.
NECK(ERCHIEF) IT
Apart from your more traditional sunglasses and baseball caps, neckerchiefs are the most important accessory for men the season. These were more prevalent at the Paris shows, but were also a noticeable feature in Milan and London especially tied or folded underneath a lightweight, cotton, crew-necked jumper.
GET YOURSELF A CUBAN COLLAR
This season we're looking back to the 1950s and taking inspiration from your grandfather's favourite shortsleeved shirt. As temperatures rise, ditch your heavy knitwear and button down Oxford shirts. Instead get yourself some lightweight shirts featuring the retro Cuban collar. For an even more spring-appropriate look, don't be afraid to go bold.
www.emalmag.com
PATTERN-ON-PATTERN
Usually during the shows it becomes clear that one particular type of pattern will rule over all for the season - however no such thing emerged for spring/summer '16. Instead, the trend came from not what to wear, but how to wear it - as a head-to-toe look. Whether you go for matching pattern at top and bottom or two colourcomplementary exploded prints, the key to pulling this off is exercising restraint where it's needed. Keep your accessories solid coloured and preferably in blank-canvas shades like navy, black or white, and let that big bold print speak for itself.
SUMMER'S A GREY AREA
Usually the warmer months invite an explosion of colour on the catwalks - but for SpringS u m m e r 2 016 d e s i g n e r s seemed to unanimously decide on a more subdued palette, with grey topping the list as the most widely-seen hue. Sure, it's a colour that all men have in their wardrobe already, but next season it's all about how you wear it: varying shades and patterns of grey should be worn all at once to create a look that's big on texture.
GET SOME GREENS
Green has been around for a few seasons now, but this season it's booming. While we've previously seen green as a head-totoe outfit in the same shade, for S/S '16 we'll see the shades split up and mixed together. Beginners should clash hues using accessories (such as ties or bags), but for next level menswear points commit with a few contrasting pieces that you can wear together.

Kareena Kapoor Khan on Hollywood: I could never do what Priyanka has done
Kareena Kapoor Khan says having a career in Hollywood like fellow actress Priyanka Chopra is not feasible for her as her priorities in life are different than the “Quantico” star. In her recent interview to fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue, where the actress has also appeared on the cover, Kareena said she does not want to conquer the world. “My priorities are very different. I think it's amazing what Priyanka has done. But I don't think I could ever do something like that. I want to be a married working woman. My responsibilities are a lot more different than hers. I have a husband, I would like to start a family. “I can't give up everything and move to LA. That's not me. The kind of work that these girls have put in, you need to have that kind of dedication of wanting to achieve so much and do it so wonderfully. Also, maybe I'm lazy. I don't want to conquer the world but I don't mind having a little place of my own. It's as simple as that,” she said. The “Ki & Ka” star, 35, and the 33year-old former Miss World shared screen space in 2004 romantic-thriller “Aitraaz”.

Tarzan may have left the jungle, but the call of the wild proves too irresistible for the rope-swinging hero as he is lured back to the African forests, only to find himself racing to save his kidnapped wife and the Congolese people in a new film. “The Legend of Tarzan,” due in US theaters on Friday, sees Tarzan, played by Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgard, going by the name John Clayton, living in a manor in Victorian England and married to Jane, played by Margot Robbie. HAIR STYLING BASICS MADE EASY
By Cecily Whiteside
I
t's a familiar story. You walk out of the beauty salon with a gorgeous new cut, expertly styled. All day you stand taller, feel more beautiful, smile at strangers and congratulate yourself on your new look. But
Styling products can be your best friend or worst enemy come morning, stepping out of the shower, you confront your image in the mirror and think, “now what?” Getting that perfect look back without help seems impossible. Putting in the wrong thing for your hair's texture or length can sabotage your look, no matter how good your cut. Pick the right product and are on your way to great hair. “The first thing I look at, is the health of your
hair,” says Felicia Draughon, owner of Roots Organic Salon and expert stylist. “What nutrients does it need to look healthy? Is it previously colored? Highlighted? Sundamaged? Wind-damaged? Hair care products today are smarter about making hair healthy again. We tend to over-process with heat; blow dryer, flat iron. Beautiful hair is healthy hair.” No matter your hair type or length, the first suggestion Draughon has is to use a protein spray. “They are light and add nutrients into damaged hair without making it sticky or crunchy. It fills in the porous ends and makes it look and feel healthy.” For fine hair, she suggests a volumizer on the roots. Then it's time to pick your style:

Gel
Mousse Gel is basically mousse without the aerosol. This makes it both easier to gauge how much to use — and makes it easier to overuse. Gel comes in several levels of hold.
Gel is basically mousse without the aerosol Coarse, wavy hair needs strong hold, while lighter, finer hair needs light hold. “Gel is great if you want a lot of control,” says Draughon. “Spray gel is best if you want hold, but don't want that 40s pin-up look. Like Jessica Rabbit.”
Mousse makes hair bigger and controls frizz. “I would use mousse on curly girls,” Draughon says. “It gives control, definition and volume. For fine, thin hair mousse would weigh it down.” While mousse comes out of the can foamy, it reduces as you apply it, which can make it difficult to control exactly how much goes where. And read the label before you buy. Mousse that contains alcohol will dry out hair, making it brittle and easily broken while styling.
Pomade and Wax These products give a firm style. “The only time you want to break out a pomade is for pixie cuts and crops,” says Draughon. “One of my favorite tricks is to use a beard balm as a pomade. Thinking outside the box is good. I love to experiment.”
Paste “These are my favorite,” says Draughon. Pastes are a hybrid of pomade, wax and conditioner. “They are great for all kinds of hair; thick, coarse, long, short, curly. Pastes are fabulous!”
To finish up your style, try a few drops of argon oil or roucou oil. Be sparing, though, since over-use can give you a greasy sheen instead of a warm glow. To keep hair in place, a small amount of hairspray can help, but again, be sparing. The glued-in-place look went out with the 70s. Here's to your beautiful hair!
