Design Brief

When researching musical theatres in London I have realised there is a lack of these buildings being unique and original from the inside to the out. To be different from this, in this project I’ll be designing musical theatre combined with a opera house that will not only have a modern interior but a modern exterior which will be inspired by the theme movement and flow. My aim is to achieve a modern musical theatre/opera house to bring the community together and to increase tourism.

What my building will include:

Specification

• • • • • • •

A massive seating area fitting 3,000 people Stage & backstage area Front of house (reception): collect/purchase tickets (many entrances from either side of the building) Maybe café or bar Toilets Cloakroom Parking space

Transport links

Location for my building I have chosen this location for the musical theatre/opera house as it is a brown field site that could be good use for my building. Has good access to transport near by such as Greenwich underground and bus station just 10 minutes walk as this is shown in the bottom right image . This allows easy access to and from the theatre. The O2 arena beingtext 10 minute walk away gives many advantages as it has many food places and shops that can be visited just before you experience the musical dream. Another advantage is that the O2 attracts many tourists so this would benefit to them also coming down to the theatre. The image on the left has the location of theatres in London as you can see this is mainly located in central London therefore my location would be a great area as there isn’t any theatres located here.

Researching different entertainment centres – exterior

Concert hall, theatre & school – Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín Theatre - The Melbourne Theatre Company Here I have found existing entertainment centres that are located in different areas around the world. I have Concert venue and musical done this so I could see what education centre - Sage Gateshead type of exterior buildings already exist and to gain inspiration when thinking of my exterior for my building. For the exterior in my building on will be avoiding making it a simple form as I want to experiment with my buildings theme movement Opera house - Opernhaus Dortmund and flow.

Researching different entertainment centers – interior

Here I have been looking at existing interior spaces so I could learn more about the function, layout, design etc. Also gain inspiration and ideas for my own interior space. I have realised a lot but one thing that interested me was how red is used quite often used in musical theatres' also in other entertainment spaces such as cinemas and opera houses. For my interior space I would want to avoid this as its used everywhere and I would want my interior colour to be unique.

Harbin Opera house – exterior drawings

The Harbin Grand Theatre or Harbin Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China. Measuring 850,349 square-foot, the theatre is designed by well-known Chinese architect Ma Yansong. On the exterior, the architecture references the landscape of the surrounding area. The resulting curvilinear façade composed of smooth white aluminum panels becomes the poetry of edge and surface, softness and sharpness. I chose to focus on this theatre because I like the modern and unique look to it.

Harbin Opera house – interior

Here I have done some research on the interior of Harbin opera house. The whole structure looks organic this can inspire me with my theme of movement and flow. I have done line drawings to help me understand how a few places in the building work and have been designed.

Primary photos researching movement and flow structures

Here are my primary photo that I have taken in Canary Wharf. I have taken these photographs of different coloured lights around brunches and trees as I feel it relates to movement and flow. This will help me with generating ideas for my buildings and the stage of model making.

Models inspired by primary previous primary photos

dna This model was influenced by my precious primary photos that were taken in canary wharf. Here I have combined wire, plastic and furry wire to create a unique form and add colour to the model. I have twisted each of these around each other loosely to create a form that could potentially become a building. This will be a starting point for my building and from here I will develop my building by experimenting with it further.
