Design Brief

There is a lack of engagement in the gallery people look at the art and move on to the next piece. To prevent this from happing I would like to engage different ages to come together offering a chance to explore the work in another way. My job is to make a gallery that stands out to the public getting people to bring their friends, family and even meet new people. My gallery will include spacious art rooms that have a different feel to them, not just a white room with art work that we tend to imagine. So I would like to avoid this and get people to picture my gallery differently when the name of my gallery is said. My aim is to achieve a modern contemporary art gallery to bring the community together with the theme of natural and organic.

Specification What my space will include: •

• • • •

Gallery rooms for the art work to be presented with benches or chairs with tables for people to take a break or just sit down to view the work Activity rooms that will have exhibitions, after school clubs for children all ages, events with artists etc. Toilets in the gallery located in different areas such as near activity rooms, gallery rooms etc. There will also be a café for people to take a break or get food and drink. This will also have its individual toilet sector so that the visitors wouldn’t have to wonder around the gallery for toilets.

Location I have chosen this location for the gallery as it’s a large space with two different train stations near by. Hackney Wick station that is 9 minutes away and Stratford international that is 21 minutes away also allowing you to experience what else is around on the way. This lets people reach the gallery easily without having to use further transport. The red marks in the right picture show all the tourist attractions near by. Stratford is a busy area as there is a lot of things going on this is a benefit as many people will be near by and they will be attracted to visit.

Address: Parkes St, London E15 2GY

What is an art gallery? In the Oxford dictionary the word art gallery is a room or building for the display or sale of works of art.

What does galleries contain? What happens in galleries?

Galleries have both visible and invisible to support their artists often by putting on shows, promoting their artists, and selling the works. Galleries welcome all ages so there is something to do for everyone.

Researching existing art gallery Here I have found existing art galleries that are located around the world. These are different and unique structures that I could use as inspiration when trying to create my structure. For my gallery I would like the exterior to be unique to other architects with the use of natural and organic structures. As when doing secondary research on galleries there isn’t much of these.

Researching existing interior – entrance

Here I have found existing interior of different galleries that are interesting and uncommon. This could inspire me to produce my interior design and help me develop something that is even more different to this. In my design I would like a simple, modern but unique gallery. As I have said that I am going to combine my idea with natural and organic structures I would also like to bring this with my interior design.

Researching existing interior – gallery rooms Here I have found existing interior gallery rooms that have a unique design to them. In my gallery rooms I want to avoid doing the basic white rooms that we always think of when thinking about galleries. When researching gallery rooms I realized that there isn’t many galleries with black ceilings or black walls for art to be hang. I really like this idea as black makes it look different from the ordinary.

Recording different interior rooms

Here I have drawn some interior gallery rooms that I found interesting and would consider in my own interior. I chose to do line drawings of the spaces to help me understand the layout of the spaces. Doing this will help me pick the parts that I find most effective and maybe use in my own gallery rooms. An example that I really like here is the top middle interior layout as it is spacious, has a variety of art working hanging for the public to view, there is seating in the middle for people that would want to sit down and take a break.

Theme - Natural & organic structures

Here are some natural and organic structures that I have found. I have selected these because I want to bring them into my art galleries interior or exterior design. I want to do this because I think this would bring more interest to the building and give it more colour.

Researching existing natural and organic buildings Here I have secondary images of buildings that have used my theme within their designs, this helps me see how other people have explored that theme. From this I can maybe use some of the ideas in my own work as I really do like these ideas especially the green plants.

Art gallery of Alberta is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is know for its swirling exterior of zinc, glass and steel inspired by Edmonton’s unique northern environment. Its silver color reflects the shimmering and multicolored Aurora Borealis. From original contemporary to historical exhibitions from Alberta, across Canada and around the world. It explores over 6,000 objects throughout three bright and airy floors of viewing space. I chose to do this art gallery as I found it different to the rest and stood out the most to me. I wanted to focus on one art gallery so that I could stand to understand the exterior and interior of the building. Lower level

Here I have been doing research on art gallery of Alberta. I really like the design structure of the building. I have done a few different drawings of each section of the building. Trying to figure out how this art gallery is built.

I found the different structures used in the interior and exterior unique. For example I like the way it all joins the building together and making each section different where ever you look.

Primary esearch in Tate Modern

I went to Tate Modern which is an art gallery located in London. To take some primary photos of the exterior and interior from my own eyes. This helped me see the structure and the detail physically. My main focus was to take photos of natural, organic and man made structures that could be used in either my interior or exterior design.

Primary Research in Tate modern & other places – inspirational objects/shapes

In Tate Modern I also took some primary images of interesting structure and natural/organic structures. These will be used in my slides to create ideas for my art gallery. I will draw the best ones in a simple form. Then could be combined with other natural/organic.

Cardboard models

This model was influenced by different art galleries I have found interesting such as the Art Gallery Of Alberta and Royal Ontario Museum. Both of these structures have pointy shapes which I would like to combine in my ideas.

Here I have combined paper fold models to create structures. From these I have cut them in half and started to think about buildings that could be developed.
