A Level Photography

Architecture photographs in colour

These photographs were taken in London using manual settings to achieve my goal. My goal was to take sharp and different angled photos. Once I took them I edited them on Photoshop to create a more effective approach to my work bringing out clarity, colour and the main features that I wanted to stand out. I think most of my photos were successful in this process. What made my photographs strong and focused in the end was the angles I chose to take them from.

Architecture photograph in black and white

Here I have continued to do the same idea of taking architectural photography but I have edited them differently to the others. I have selected some photographs that I thought would look better in black and white. This type of editing brings out more of the tone and contrast of the image.

Digital Experimental techniques

Here I have selected two photographs that have been edited before and I have edited them further to create different experimental pieces.

Monoprint using paint

Here I have mono printed one of my architectural photographs using black paint. The top one is the actual mono print that I wanted to achieve and the bottom was the piece that was created while creating the main piece. This is then combined with the original edited photographs digitally which is shown in the next slide.

Experimenting with monoprint and original image

With the mono print I created from the previous slide I scanned it in and used Photoshop to explore my final ideas. I combined the original image with the mono print to create three images that are different to one another. I have tried to experiment with these by reducing the opacity for each to get the best result.

Kaleidoscope experiment

Here I wanted to expand my skills on Photoshop so I have used one of my architectural London photographs that has been edited and created a kaleidoscope.

Digital stripe collage

Here I have continued to develop my skills and have combined my architectural photographs that were edited all together to create two different stripe collages using Photoshop.

Initial photographs – addictions

In this set of photographs I focused on the idea of 'smoking vape is better than smoking normally but the disadvantages are hidden‘ as society shows. Therefore I got my model to vape and I took portraits of her in a black studio.

Experimental photographs

For my experimental photographs of the previous I have edited and printed them on acetate to create that see through effect on the face. This can be done to show that we don't know or can’t see the vaping effects therefore the face is see through. I have placed the acetate behind glass and sprayed water drops so that it would show how we wash away the damage vaping does to us by not speaking about it and avoiding it when vaping is no better an smoking.

Initial photographs – gender stereotype

For this photo-shoot I have chosen to take pictures of a male doing female things such as wearing making, hoop earrings etc. I have done this because I wanted to show that boys shouldn’t just be associated with blue as that is one of the main gender stereotypes. To show this I picked the colour pink to show that not only girls can like that colour and put it as the background and eye shadow.

Initial photographs – beauty stereotype

Here my plan was to take photographs of body parts mainly the back part of a model and doing the same with the with a manikin. I wanted to do this idea because I want to show the viewer that not everyone can be this model type as social media shows and people do have flaws.

Initial photographs – race stereotype

Here I wanted to explore the idea of race stereotype through portraits in the black studio with my model wearing tights. I wanted to show how difficulty it is for women to find the right colour of the tights as there isn't enough of a variety of tight colures. We end up buying a colour that doesn’t match us.

Initial photographs – childhood memories

In this set of photographs I wanted to work on the idea of my personal childhood memories that have changed me as a person when growing up. The memory of a moth being stuck in a room and me trying to let it out but got scared by it’s sudden movement.

A Level Architecture Single point perspective drawings

Here I have practised doing single point perspective drawings. This type of drawing gives a more realistic view by creating it threedimensional. I have also added people to one of my drawing to show more depth to the drawing.

Recording Falling water with different type of lines

Here I have researched a building called Falling water. From the research photographs I have done drawings of two parts of the building to help me understand how the building functions. This then could help me later on with my own building design.

Elevation drawings

Here I have done elevation drawings of pavilions and builds that I found interest. These drawings will help me understand the functions of different buildings and pavilions but also help me create ideas and see what I am interested in.

First iconic building Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier – Elevation drawings

Here I have done a elevation and a plan view drawings of a different building which is called Villa Savoye to help me with ideas and understanding the function of this building.

Recording plan view of each floor

Second iconic building Maison de La Culture by Le Corbusier

Here I have continued to experiment ideas and develop my drawing skills by doing elevations of Maison De La Culture. This helped me understand the function for my own design later on.

Model making - tensile structures

Here I have started to make forms and ideas to develop my building. The structure I have created was inspired by the image I have put above. To create this structure I have used wood as my surface, fabric and wooden sticks to hold the fabric up from the surface.

Paper fold structures

Here I have used a different type of way to create ideas and to make models. Inspired by the image above I have folded paper to create forms that could be used later on.

Researching existing art gallery

My brief was to create art gallery so I have found existing art galleries that are located around the world. These are different and unique structures that I could use as inspiration when trying to create my structure. For my gallery I would like the exterior to be unique to other architects with the use of natural and organic structures. As when doing secondary research on galleries there isn’t much of these.

Theme - Natural & organic structures

Here on the left are natural and organic structures that I have found. I have selected these because I want to bring them into my art galleries interior or exterior design. I want to do this because I think this would bring more interest to the building and give it more color. On the right I have secondary images of buildings that have used my theme within their designs, this helps me see how other people have explored that theme. From this I can maybe use some of the ideas in my own work as I really do like these ideas especially the green plants.

Existing art gallery research – Art gallery of Alberta I have chosen to look at an existing art gallery to help me understand how an art gallery functions and what it needs to be a successful building. The Art gallery of Alberta is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is know for its swirling exterior of zinc, glass and steel inspired by Edmonton’s unique northern environment. I chose to do this art gallery as I found it different to the rest and stood out the most to me.

Primary Research in Tate modern – inspirational objects/shapes

On the left are primary images of interesting natural/man made structures that I took in the Tate Modern. From the primary research I gathered in Tate modern. Here on the right I have drawn the objects/forms and multiplied them, reflected, overlapped and combined together different pieces to create forms and ideas for my building design.

Idea 1

To create this idea I have combined my primary research forms, secondary research that is natural and organic structures also being inspired by Art gallery of Albert. The structure of the building came from my primary research form drawings then I added windows that are placed onto of the building these were inspired by the existing art gallery and the leaf structure. I also found the structure on the right interesting so I added it to the building wall design.

Wire models

Here I have made wire models to create ideas and forms for my art gallery. This was inspired by my primary research that I found in Tate Modern. I have created the models by twisting and joining wire to create a form.

Wire models and simplified elevation drawings

Here I have combined my original wire models all together to create more of a building type form. I have taken the wire models and created simplified elevation drawings this helps me picture how that form would work as a building on land.

Idea 2

To create idea 2 I have combined my wire model and secondary research. The structure of the building came from my wire model. This was then developed into a elevation drawing from then I added windows that were inspired by my secondary research and decided to add shelter to the sides of the building which are the from of leaves.

Creating my idea in sketch up

Here I have started to form my idea 2 in sketch up so it could help me visualise my idea in a digital way. When using sketch up I started to develop and add new ideas as you can see from the images above. My ideas started to develop from my models that lead to the unique look of my structure.

Unfortunately due to the pandemic starting I didn’t get a chance to finish my project the way I wanted to.
