Café Riverview and Second-View Thrift Store are two local businesses changing lives every day.

Nestled along Route 6A in East Sandwich, idyllic Café Riverview and Second-View Thrift Store offer patrons much more than meets the eye. Owned and operated by Riverview School, a local boarding and day school for students with complex language and learning challenges, also located in East Sandwich, this café and thrift store give the unique opportunity to eat, sip, shop, and give back to a growing educational community all in one visit.

Café Riverview’s menu offers a variety of delicious options, including breakfast, specialty coffee drinks, freshly baked pastries, and a lunch menu centered around their signature sandwiches, salads, and quinoa bowls. The atmosphere upon arrival allows for a cozy sit-in experience, or easy take-out for your daily beach trip. Open yearround Tuesday throught Sunday, 7:00am to 2:00pm, it is well worth the trip.

Located in the same building and sharing a parking lot with the café is Second-View Thrift Store. From stylish apparel to unique housewares, this hidden

gem has something for everyone. The clean and comfortable shop makes it easy to get lost among the shelves, and the welcoming staff is happy to help however needed. Second-View is also open year-round, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00am to 2:00pm for shopping or donation drop-off.

What truly makes Café Riverview and Second-View Thrift store exceptional is that behind the scenes, Riverview School is providing the opportunity for enriching vocational and educational experiences within these enterprises.

Riverview, a school focused on empowering students with complex learning challenges, revolves its curriculum around strong academic support in combination with independent living skills and social development. Riverview consists of a middle and high school, as well as a 3-year postgraduate

transition program called GROW (Getting Ready for the Outside World). As soon as students arrive on campus, they are encouraged to embrace selfadvocacy and celebrate what makes them unique. Vocational readiness becomes a priority starting in high school, as Riverview helps match seniors with local businesses for internships and teaches the foundations of managing the workplace environment. After high school, many students go on to attend GROW, which focuses even more heavily on independent living and professional opportunities.

Café Riverview provides invaluable experience by giving Riverview students the chance to work in the hospitality industry, acting like a hands-on classroom located right down the road from their campus. Students immerse themselves in the

art of food service, mastering every aspect of restaurant operations. From crafting beverages to providing impeccable service, they gain invaluable vocational skills. Meanwhile, at SecondView Thrift, students delve into the world of retail and customer service, learning the nuances of inventory management and customer relations. They learn the value of the day-to-day upkeep and gain familiarity with the hustle and bustle of a retail environment.

Radio personality Stephanie Viva was recognized for her tireless volunteerism supporting numerous local charities like the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Children's Museum, Habitat for Humanity, and Tommy's Place. Her energetic presence enriches events like the Sandwich 4th of July celebration.

Public Servant Award:

Guy Boucher, Town of Sandwich

Guy Boucher, recently promoted to Director of Operations for Community Services, received the Public Servant Award. He has dedicated 15 years to expanding Sandwich's recreation programs, beaches, facilities and museums. Boucher is commended for his approachability, innovation and commitment to serving local businesses.

Sandwich Chamber Ambassador of the Year:

State Rep. Steven Xiarhos

State Representative Xiarhos was honored as Ambassador of the Year for elevating the town's small businesses through his social media platforms and live promotions. He continuously supports the local veteran community and non-profits.

A Legacy of Nature, Wildlife, and Conservation

Thornton Waldo Burgess, born on January 14, 1874, is a luminary in literature and conservation. Despite a modest upbringing in Sandwich, Massachusetts, his deep connection to nature blossomed early, shaping a lifelong dedication to wildlife and storytelling. Burgess's debut book, "Old Mother West Wind," launched a captivating world of animal characters like Peter Rabbit and Grandfather Frog, enchanting readers worldwide.

Beyond storytelling, Burgess championed conservation through initiatives like "The Green Meadow Club" and supporting wildlife protection laws. His influence transcended borders, with his works translated into multiple languages. Recognized with prestigious awards, including an Honorary Literary Degree and the Distinguished Service Medal, Burgess's legacy as a literary trailblazer and environmental advocate endures.

In his final years, he penned his autobiography, "Now I Remember," and continued inspiring through syndicated stories. As we mark his 150th birth anniversary, let's honor Burgess's profound impact, reminding us to cherish and safeguard the natural world he so passionately embraced.

In the heart of Sandwich’s Glass Town Cultural District, this fascinating museum features a stunning Museum Store offering locally made glass objects, jewelry and more. In addition to fifteen galleries, the Museum offers contemporary glass exhibitions, programs, and ample parking. Experience the history and art that made Sandwich “the Town that glass built”. The Sandwich Glass Museum and Historical Society interprets the history of the town of Sandwich, and its role in ushering in the Industrial Revolution to this once agricultural and fishing village. Sparked by the building of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company in 1825, the company grew to be one of the world’s largest glass manufacturers, leaving an indelible mark on the face of Sandwich which remains today as glass studios dot Cape Cod, including some in Sandwich, and beyond.

Located in the historic town of Sandwich, Heritage Museums & Gardens is an exemplar of cultural and botanical splendor on Cape Cod. The 2024 season at Heritage is packed with captivating exhibitions and events: Impressionist New England: Four Seasons of Color and Light (April 20Oct. 20) - This exhibition showcases the landscapes and quintessential charm of New England through the eyes of Impressionist artists. From Carriage to Classic: How Automobiles Transformed America (April 20 –Oct. 20) - Journey through the history of American transportation with twenty-six iconic vehicles, including a notable 1909 White Steamer from President Taft’s fleet. Heritage's Renowned Garden Festivals - Botanical wonders are celebrated during our Rhododendron Festival (May 17 – May

The Dexter Grist Mill is one of the most photographed sites on Cape Cod. The mill overlooks Lower Shawme Pond and is bordered by the Town Hall, herring run, picturesque colonial homes, and a cemetery with gravestones dated back to the 1600s. All the mill’s machinery is the earliest type used in this country and is driven by water power from the Shawme Pond. Freshly ground cornmeal packaged in old-fashioned cloth flour bags can be purchased and includes the mill’s popular recipes.

The Nye Museum in East Sandwich nestled on Old County Road is dedicated to protecting the Benjamin Nye Homestead, chronicling the property's historical significance, and fostering community engagement through historical education and events. Visitors will enjoy a guided tour of the homestead featuring five restored period rooms furnished with interesting antiques to help interpret life in earlier times. From June-October, a special exhibition showcasing various aspects relating to Nye or East Sandwich history is on display in the Old Grange Hall. Visitors can round out their experience with self-guided tours of the1858 Mill Building and fish hatchery trails. The museum also hosts special events, workshops, and lectures throughout the year. The 2024 Special Exhibit is Discovering Scorton Harbor: The Forgotten Dock and Shipyard.

Great for all ages! Explore the Cape Cod Canal’s rich history, fascinating features and vigilant operations through interactive exhibits, activities and Park Ranger led programs. Board a retired 40-foot patrol boat. Scan live radar and camera monitors to locate vessels in the waterway. Investigate what’s inside ships that transit the canal. View films about the canal in the small theater. Discover wildlife that live in or around the canal. Observe the bustling activity in an interpretive pollinator garden. Participate in free interpretive programs like guided hikes, story time, Junior Ranger and more. Or ... just relax and soak in the waterfront views from the front deck. US Army Corps of Engineers Park Rangers staff the Center and provide information about the canal and its recreational opportunities. A small bookstore is also offered.

Nestled right in the heart of the Sandwich Historic District, you will see the Sandwich Historic Town Hall originally built in 1834, now widely recognized as the longest continuously operating seat of town government in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Through a collaboration with Town Hall Preservation Trust, The Glass Town Cultural District Committee, the Town of Sandwich and others, Sandwich Arts Alliance, an artist-driven nonprofit organization supporting the region’s arts and artists, now occupies the first floor featuring an extensive art gallery, gift shop of locally produced, handcrafted treasures, and classroom space for art instruction and community engagement. Visitors are welcome to visit the SAA facilities as well as explore the fully restored and updated upstairs auditorium space used for live performances on the weekends. Sandwich Arts Alliance consists of four entities: Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Literary Arts and Friends of the Arts. All are encouraged to stop by and join us in our mission to continue to cultivate our creative economy and culturally enrich the Sandwich, MA community and its visitors.

An innovative art museum celebrating 40 years, the Cahoon Museum of American Art presents contemporary art exhibitions in a spacious modern gallery, as well as in the historic 1782 Crocker homestead. Step back in time with a narrated tour of the Hoxie House, a 17th-century dwelling perched on a bluff overlooking Shawme Pond. As you explore, unravel the tales of settlers that have shaped modern-day expressions, from "daylight robbery" to "the upper crust."

The Thornton W. Burgess/Green Briar Nature Center & Jam Kitchen named after naturalist and renowned children's author of Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox, and Grandfather Frog, among many others, Green Briar offers the storybook exhibit of the Green Meadow Forest including a small menagerie. The Wing Fort House, built circa 1641, is the oldest colonial home on Cape Cod consecutively owned by the same family. Acquired by Stephen Wing in 1646, his descendants enlarged it, culminating in the two-story house it is today. Tour four centuries in one house. Peer through a courting door, experience a 17th century rope bed, view the historic Wing family possessions and stroll through an authentic colonial kitchen garden. The Wing History Museum shares 300 years of history of Wing descendants across America. The “Whaling Wings” exhibit offers visitors a glimpse of the many Wing Captains who sailed the world hunting whales and of the J & WR Wing Company’s prize vessel, the Charles W. Morgan, the most successful wooden whaling ship ever built. Our journey begins at Boyden Farm, a verdant oasis spread across 48 acres of land. With its tranquil walking trail tracing the shores of Peter’s Pond, it's a haven for both wildlife and wanderers alike. The gentle rustle of leaves and the soft chirping of birds accompany our steps as we immerse ourselves in the beauty of this natural sanctuary.

From there, we venture into the Briar Patch, a sprawling 166-acre conservation area tucked behind the Green Briar Nature Center. Here, the scent of wildflowers fills the air, and the verdant canopy overhead offers respite from the sun's warm embrace. Each step reveals a new wonder, a hidden gem waiting to be uncovered amidst the lush foliage.

Our next stop takes us to the Cape Cod Canal Bike Paths, where paved trails wind along the canal's edge, offering panoramic views of the shimmering waters below. As we continue our journey, we find ourselves amidst the serene beauty of Cooks Farm Conservation Lands. Managed by the Thornton W. Burgess Society, this 133-acre sanctuary is a testament to the town's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Here, the rhythm of nature beats in harmony with the pulse of life, inviting us to slow down and savor the moment.

Our exploration leads us to Elinor’s Woods, a hidden gem nestled just off Richards Way in East Sandwich. Here, the forest canopy stretches overhead like a cathedral ceiling, casting dappled shadows upon the forest floor below. With each step, we feel the stress of the outside world melt away, replaced by a sense of peace and serenity.

A 2.8-mile loop -- marked by signs and sharrows -- takes cyclists from the Cape Cod Canal into historic Sandwich village. Start at the eastern end of the canal path next to Sandwich Marina and ride down Freezer Road and make a right onto Tupper Road. Take care while making a left turn at the stoplight onto Route 6A and take a right at the next light onto Jarves Street toward the heart of the village (or take a left for a detour to the town’s iconic Boardwalk). While on the way to -- or while within -- the village cyclists may stop at any of several eateries for refreshment. From Jarves Street the signed route continues right onto Main Street. While the route leaves Main Street at picturesque River Street, first take a light detour to the end of Main Street, where riders will find a park with bike racks, seasonally available restrooms, and benches across from destinations such as Sandwich Town Hall, the grist mill and an artesian well –reachable via a crosswalk -- where riders can fill their water bottles.

Those wishing to return to the canal can backtrack up Main Street to River Street and reconnect with Tupper Road via the signed route for the return trip. Bike racks have been placed at key locations around Sandwich: At beaches, public buildings, parks and the Sandwich Welcome Center on Route 130. More bike racks are being added around town annually. For mountain bikers, Shawme-Crowell State Forest is worth exploring, as are single-track trails nestled between Oak Ridge School and Corpus Christi Parish off Quaker Meetinghouse Road. That network connects to Maple Swamp Conservation Area (parking lot on Service Road between Mill Road and Noel Henry Drive), totaling nearly 50 miles of trails punctuated with a panoramic lookout platform atop Nye Mountain that affords visitors a view of Cape Cod Bay.

BMX riders will also want to visit the new Cape Cod BMX track off Quaker Meetinghouse Road between Cotuit Road and Route 130. Sandwich’s Bikeway & Pedestrian Committee is focused on accomplishing a designated route to connect the village with a soon-to-be-completed multi-use path along Service Road, which eventually will also connect to the Cape Cod

Rail Trail to the east. The committee in 2018 completed a town-wide master plan for biking and walking improvements and is working toward safer on- and off-road connections between the town’s commercial centers, recreational areas, neighborhoods, and schools.
