hat fantastic performances we saw from the British riders at the Paris Olympics. Their medal haul made equestrian one of Team GB’s most successful sports at the Games. But will this outstanding achievement persuade the mainstream TV channels to broadcast more horse sports? Let’s hope so because, when it’s well presented, show jumping in particular makes a wonderfully entertaining package. I watched the Brits win the team show jumping gold medal with a group of mainly non-horsey people. Even on a small screen, everyone could understand what was going on and they became enthralled by the unfolding drama. Well done, the BBC, for covering this thrilling competition. Let’s hope positive feedback means there’s more to come. Resistance to worming drugs is a bit like climate change; one of those massive problems which we, as individuals, can feel powerless to overcome. Indeed, ETN’s CPD feature in this issue, which covers the toxic effects of worming on the environment, at first appears a bit depressing. But, then again, shock tactics can provoke action… So, thank you, to author Claire Shand of Westgate Labs for giving us some practical, easyto-follow advice for RAMAs (SQPs) to pass on and that we can all implement with our own horses. Mostly importantly, her tips and tricks don’t involve extra expense – something that’s going to be a major consideration for many horse owners this coming winter. In her article, Claire highlights the importance of protecting the humble dung beetle. Seeing a closeup photo of the little chap doing his best to clean up the land for our horses makes him rather endearing. I’ll be thinking of him next time I do a worm egg

count test instead of automatically reaching for a drug for my horse. Even if you have to drag yourself to BETA International – cursing under your breath that it’s a day away from more important jobs - you’ll come away feeling inspired and cheerful. Yes, it’s helpful go to Stoneleigh with a plan of who and what you want to see. But inevitably it’s those off-agenda moments that make the trip so worthwhile; the chance meeting with a useful contact, stumbling across a clever new product, the ideas, the unexpected learning. Its good to meet the people behind the products – especially the new companies or those fresh on the equestrian scene. The latter often bring a new perspective to our sector to keep us on our toes. No-one can guarantee a profitable year’s trading just because they visited BETA International. But when it comes to making good use of a day or two, time spent at the show is never wasted. If nothing else, it’s a jolly good day out. The show is free to get in and free to park. Visitor registration is still open. At last, vets appear to be adopting riding hats when handling horses. Bell Equine Veterinary Clinic recently issued a press release about its latest diagnostic equipment, complete with a picture of be-hatted vets scanning a horse. As well as taking every sensible safety precaution, they’re also using the hats as promotion tools – each one sporting the practice name and logo. What a great idea.

Sales banned to EU of some shiny saddlery hardware A European ban on a type of chrome often used to make saddlery hardware such as saddle nails and cantle badges comes into effect this month (September). The outlawing of hexavalent chrome under EU legislation will affect UK exports to Europe. It will not hit sales within the UK - although a replica ruling here cannot be ruled out. California is to implement a similar ban in around two years’ time, with other US states thought likely to follow. Hexavalent chrome, the process by which some chrome finished products are made, is now widely believed to pose carcinogenic risks. Manufacturer switches production IDX Ltd makes saddle nails, saddle cantle plates, bridle badges and alike – often to bespoke designs for leading manufacturers – at its Walsall factory. The company exports to 28 countries across four continents. Mindful of the upcoming ban, IDX withdrew hexavalent chrome from its production processes more than two years ago. Instead, the company uses trivalent chrome across its entire production. Paul Hadley of IDX told ETN that retail and wholesale buyers of saddlery hardware, from bench saddlers to big manufacturers, need to be aware of the ban – especially if they export to Europe. “Many in the trade are not aware of the ban, but knowing the facts could save a lot of frustration – and expense – for some people,” he said. Know your chrome Hexavalent chrome is also known as

chrome 6, and trivalent chrome as chrome 3. But it’s impossible to tell by eye if a product is finished with hexavalent chrome or ‘safe’ trivalent chrome. So, what is Paul’s advice to buyers of chrome finished saddlery accessories? “If it’s a shiny, silvery colour, you need to go to your hardware supplier and find out what it is. Ask what type of chrome,” says Paul. “At IDX, we send our products to a [UK] plating factory as part of our manufacturing process. “In this industry, we work with technical data sheets from our plating supplier. These tell us exactly processes are used and what chemicals involved.” An advantage of the EU ban on hexavalent chrome, he added, is that it will “expose people that are passing off cheap imports as being UK manufactured.” Nickel alternative Thanks to IDX’s prompt transition to trivalent chrome, and the company’s wide coverage of supply to UK saddlery makers, most British made products should be safe to sell into Europe post hexavalent chrome ban. But it may still be worth checking with your supplier, says Paul. Inevitably, trivalent chrome is slightly more expensive to get plated than the outlawed hexavalent chrome. An alternative is to use nickel plate. “We also offer nickel plate,” Paul adds, “I rather like it. Chrome gives brighter finish but nickel holds a deeper lustre.” www.equestriantradenews.com

Business founder inspired by motherhood Equine supplements and care products supplier Pro-Equine is celebrating 20 years in business. It all began when Fiona Baptie, pictured with cofounder Catherine Stott, started making products at her kitchen table when she was pregnant with her first child. “Becoming a mum actually gave me the perfect opportunity to pursue an idea I’d had for a while,” says Fiona. Pro-Equine claims to be the first company to introduce neem oil and neem-based products to the UK equestrian market. Fiona and Catherine say they’re proud that their products are 100% natural and 100% British. “A strong environmental ethos is key to the company and, if possible, ingredients are sourced locally. From the outset, the business has encouraged customers to reuse and recycle the packaging, offering environmentally and purse-friendly refills,” explains Catherine.
More companies join trade body
In the last five years, Pro-Equine has switched to using packaging predominantly made from recycled plastic, with no plastic used in outer or bulk packaging.

Freedom honour for saddle company owner Nikki Newcombe, the founder of Bliss of London, has been presented with the Freedom of the City of London following her acceptance as a Liveryman into the Worshipful Company of Saddlers. The Freedom ceremony, first held in 1237, takes place in the Chamberlain’s Court at Guildhall. After being escorted to the court by the Beadle [master of ceremonies], Nikki was invited to read the Declaration of a Freeman and sign the Freeman’s declaration book. “I was presented with a Copy of the Freedom, a parchment document beautifully inscribed by a calligrapher,” she said. “I feel proud to be admitted to this

unique part of London’s history. Most of the practical reasons for obtaining the Freedom of the City have disappeared. Contrary to popular belief, I do not have the right to herd sheep across London Bridge, but I am exempt from naval impressment!” Traditionally, Liverymen are granted Freedom to the right to trade, enabling members of a guild or livery to carry out their trade or craft in the Square Mile. The Worshipful Company of Saddlers is one of the oldest City of London Livery companies, with the earliest surviving records dating from around 1160. Nikki founded Bliss of London in 2011. The company has also undertaken projects to enhance the environment and support staff wellbeing, as well as the local community. “Sustainability is inherent in everything we do at Dengie, and our recent achievements reflect the importance we place on continually striving to be more efficient,” said managing director Ian Hassard. “Achieving green status with Investors in the Environment again this year is great recognition of all the work the team does to ensure we continue to produce the highest quality feeds in harmony with the environment.”

Retailer hit by £80k burglary appeals for information A retailer who lost more than £80,000 worth of stock in a burglary has appealed for help to trace the stolen items. Thieves broke into a stockroom at The Riding Habit, in Queensbury between Halifax and Bradford in West Yorkshire, at around 1.30am on Tuesday, 16 July. “They smashed through a laminated door with triple glazing,” said Diane Verity, who with her partner Andy has run the store for more than 20 years. Much of the stock the thieves took was still boxed up, making it easy for them to handle, she added. The haul includes 45 pairs of Le Chameau wellies, Pikeur clothing, Racesafe body protectors including the new Motion 3 model, Regent and Tredstep boots, Eskadron saddle cloths and Ariat clothing. They also got away with power tools, pressure washers, a bike and a nearly new driving harness. Diane reckons the total value of retail stock is around £80,000. The Riding Habit is a popular, busy store selling equestrian clothing, equipment, feed and bedding. Diane and Andy work there six days a week. “We try so hard to run a good business, and the stock that was stolen is a big chunk of my pension fund,” says Diane. “Now it feels like these criminals are making money from my hardship.” Have you been offered suspect goods? Diane believes the stolen goods are still circulating – and has appealed for help in tracking them down. “People have been so kind and supportive. But I want justice and my stock back,” she adds. Soon after the burglary, a customer alerted her to listings on the online selling platform Vinted which appeared to be advertising some of the goods taken from The Riding Habit. “She [the listing was apparently placed by a woman] was selling Ariat garments that exactly
matched the ones taken from us,” said Diane, “and I noticed that they were still on the Ariat branded hangers which we only use in the shop and don’t give away to customers. “The thieves had taken our entire Ariat sale rail. And no-one would have these hangers unless they were an Ariat stockist.” Diane is urging anyone with information about relevant online listings or who may have been offered items potentially from her stolen stock to contact her or the police. “I believe some body protectors are in quite short supply, so someone out there might be offered my Racesafe ones,” she added. “Honest businesses need protection” Diane believes more should be done to protect honest businesses from thieves who sell stolen goods via online selling platforms. “The trouble is, it’s so hard to prove the stock is yours,” she explained. “When they took the Le Chameau wellies, they took them out of the boxes which still had our name and address on because they’d just been delivered. “To see [what I believe is] my stock coming up on Vinted is so distressing. It’s so frustrating to watch this going on in front of your eyes after all those years of hard work. “These online companies should be more responsible about who is selling what and where it came from,” she told ETN. “I’d hate to see more people like me having their life’s work taken away from them.” ETN asked Vinted about its ‘stolen goods’ policy. The company told us: “Due to security reasons, we cannot provide any information about another Vinted member.”

Clearing those fences
LeMieux designed its new XC Boot in collaboration with MIMSafe, creator of the FEI-approved safety clips used on crosscountry fences to help prevent rotational falls. The boot’s V-cut front profile is said to reduce friction and drag on contact with a fence, while maintaining all-round leg protection and support. The outer shell – a strong yet flexible onepiece TPU mould incorporating three attachment straps - is lightweight, seamless and abrasion-resistant. Integrated poly-thermal resin strike guards protect the tendon and cannon bone, and radiate shock away from points of impact. The boot’s high-density foam lining is soft, breathable and shock absorbent with resistant coating to avoid water up-take. Surface air vents release heat build-up inside the boot. www.equestriantradenews.com

Samantha Wills-Berriman was the top overall student in a series of exams for sales people who represent animal health companies. Samantha, who works for Norbrook, was presented with her prize at the NOAH (National Office of Animal Health) Summer Event in July. Second place went to Emma Sillwood, also from Norbrook, with Steven Weir from Zoetis and Laura Little of Elanco in joint third. The exams, hosted and accredited by Harper Adams University, lead to the NCAH qualification which indicates that reps can provide accurate and ethical information to prescribers and re-sellers of animal medicines. When Tony died in 2002, Hazel became executive secretary for two years, before taking on her current role. Hazel is a great colleague and friend, says former SMS president Frances Roche: “She saved me from a near breakdown when we were setting up the bridle fitting qualification with City and Guilds. Sensing I was snowed under, Hazel came to my house to finish writing the documents. She even cooked me a meal.” Hazel, who last year was awarded a Fellowship of the SMS, is pictured with another former president, Chris Taylor. ETN | BENCH SADDLER OF THE MONTH
Celebrating the best bench saddlers…
This award, presented in conjunction with the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS), recognises those who uphold the highest standard of leathercraft skills.
Horse welfare This month’s winner is JOCELYN DANBY
Jocelyn Danby was a riding instructor before qualifying as a saddler and saddle fitter.
Jocelyn is working hard to promote the correct fitting of deer saddles. This one has a breast girth, breaching, girth straps, deer straps and a Prolite girth with a specially-adapted over-girth. (Photo: Annie Robinson)
About Jocelyn Danby
Based on the Black Isle in the Highlands of Scotland, Jocelyn runs Danby Equestrian with her partner Kieran Forsyth. They are both SMS registered, qualified Master Saddlers and Saddle Fitters. Jocelyn has always been creative and has a life-long love of horses. By 1999, this combined passion saw her attending courses with David May at the Cumbrian Saddlery School. She learnt the core craft skills that she still uses today, but then life took Jocelyn in a different direction – as a riding instructor. Following a move to Scotland, she continued to teach and worked as a veterinary nurse… until a chance meeting with SMS Master Saddler and Saddle Fitter Kay Hastilow in 2009 at a British Horse Society instructors’ course on saddle fit. “Kay asked if anyone would be interested in training to become an SMS Saddle Fitter,” recalls Jocelyn. “Immediately my ears pricked up; I already had some bench saddlery skills, so this could be a great opportunity to get back into the industry.” While training to fit saddles with Kay, Jocelyn studied for her saddler qualifications with Mark Romain at the Saddlery Training Centre.
22 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
Equine welfare - and specifically keeping horses as comfortable as possible - is at the heart of why Jocelyn loves her job. “Nothing beats the feeling of seeing a horse change its way of going because of something that I’ve done,” she says. Today, Jocelyn’s clients are mainly pleasure riders, many with native breeds. She has a particular interest in Highland ponies, which has developed into a unique aspect of her business.
Deer saddles for stalking
As well as riding saddles, Jocelyn works with deer saddles used for stalking. “Deer saddles are a type of pack saddle for carrying a deer carcass off the hill,” she explains. “There are a few different types of deer saddle, but Kieran and I are developing a new design which will be adjustable, similar to a riding saddle with interchangeable head plates. “A deer saddle that can be altered to fit the pony if they change shape is so important from a welfare point of view because, currently, fitting deer saddles isn’t a thing. It’s a case of putting the saddle on the pony and hope it fits. “Some stags can weigh 20 stone, and the ponies are expected to carry them, so it’s paramount that the saddle is comfortable and fits correctly. “It’s about educating people to a new way of thinking,” says Jocelyn who hopes to spread the word among the ghillies who manage the deer on the Highland estates.
Keeping tradition alive
In 2012, Jocelyn was awarded a QUEST (Queen Elizabeth Trust) scholarship to study side saddle manufacture and restoration with Richard Godden – and it’s remained a passion as this style of riding enjoys a resurgence. Jocelyn does restoration work and makes the odd side saddle from scratch. “I love to produce anything handmade, whether it’s something small, like a dog www.equestriantradenews.com
collar, or a much bigger item such as a side saddle or a deer saddle. “It’s just so rewarding to work hard at something, spend hours on it and when it’s finished, you have this beautiful product.”
Eastern European education
Two or three times a year, Jocelyn travels to Poland to teach bench saddlery, saddle fitting and bridle fitting for the Polish Saddlery Association. “I teach students from Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, we’ve even got one keen to come from Ukraine,” says Jocelyn. “There’s a real problem over there with a lack of expertise on the bench and the fitting side.” Thanks to her efforts, there are now nine saddle fitters qualified with the Polish Saddlery Association, two of them also being qualified as SMS saddle fitters. In addition, Jocelyn reports that a few of the students who are interested in bench saddlery plan to visit the UK to do the SMS training and qualifications. Indeed, she believes strongly in combining bench and fitting skills. “Being a bench saddler makes me a better fitter, and being a fitter makes me a better bench saddler,” she says. “The two sides of the job are interlinked; it’s all part of the same skill. “I know there are people who are either a fitter or a saddler, but I feel that to really understand it from every angle, it’s important to train as a saddler and a fitter.”
Time out
Despite being so busy, Jocelyn finds time to ride and enjoys hacking and exploring the woodland and countryside on her doorstep. She also devotes time to other crafts, such as beading, jewellery-making, painting, stone and glass etchings. “I have a friend who does willow weaving, she came up here for a few weeks and made two beautiful willow grouse panniers that I then added to a deer saddle,” says Jocelyn. “It was great fun working together, doing our individual crafts.”
How to nominate a bench saddler:
Everyone is invited to nominate bench saddlers they feel deserve to be named ETN Bench Saddler of the Month. Candidates for the award must be a member of the SMS and based in the UK or overseas. To nominate a bench saddler (or more than one), email editor@equestriantradenews.com and tell us why this person deserves to be put in the spotlight. Tailoring the costs of
horse ownership Lewis Wilkinson, Harry Hall International’s head of digital and e-commerce, tells Deborah Hayward what makes this online equestrian community tick.
Times for change
Attending equestrian events to promote the Harry Hall One Club is high on the agenda for Lewis Wilkinson and his team.
Harry Hall’s One Club is making great strides in helping to make horse ownership affordable with its online community.
M
any of us have fond memories of Harry Hall. After all, it has been an equestrian icon since 1891. Today, it is much more than just a brand – it has evolved to become part of an online community helping to keep horse ownership affordable and accessible through membership to its One Club.
24 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
When Matchmakers International, famous for the Harry Hall and Masta brands, sold its business in 2014, the new owners did a 360-degree pivot three years later, when they moved away from a traditional B2B supplier role in response to industry changes. Lewis explains: “In 2017, when we decided that we had strong brands and strong brand recognition, it made a lot of sense to go direct to the consumer. Trade contracts were getting thinner – not in terms of the amounts, but the money to be made, with narrower margins. Staying in B2B was only going to get harder without shrinking the business or ranging it down to be something smaller.”
Introducing the One Club
With an increasingly competitive equestrian market and rising costs of horse ownership, the One Club was born, giving members access to affordable insurance, shopping incentives and exclusive offers. The new concept proved highly popular among riders and brought some financial stability for Harry Hall.
www.equestriantradenews.com
RETAILER PROFILE | ETN Planning for the future
Harry Hall is committed to becoming an industry leader in both equestrian insurance and retail. “We are looking to expand our products and services, and build on what we have,” says Lewis.
Meet the digital whizz
Riderwear and safety garments from Harry Hall offer quality and value for One Club members.
“From a business point of view, it certainly gives us something to rely on,” says Lewis. “Whereas in e-commerce you start each month from zero, our member subscription revenue gives us something to build on.”
Growing the membership
Despite starting strong, hitting its customer base of people ready to jump across to the One Club, the time came when the team sought to grow the membership. “We used some really traditional ways in the beginning,” says Lewis. “The team drove up to Scotland and different yards and shows around the country to create a bit of a buzz. “You have to remember that, even though we had a database, to some extent we were starting from scratch, as it was full of B2B contacts.” The team’s efforts clearly worked, as today’s membership stands at 40,000. “We see that as about 10 per cent of the horse-owning households now,” adds Lewis.
Developing the package
The Harry Hall One Club has continued to expand its insurance offering and member benefits such as legal help and advice across its bronze, gold and platinum membership categories. “We also work with events to access discounted tickets,” says Lewis, “and, as our membership has grown, our ability to secure better deals has grown, too.”
Working with partners
Members are offered a range of exclusive offers and benefits. “When partnering with a third party, it is as simple as asking ourselves if we would want the offer and if it is good enough for our customers,” explains Lewis. “We are really selective about who we work www.equestriantradenews.com
with. We really want to look after our community and give them great value. “When a company comes aboard, both sides can benefit from the arrangement. Sometimes, it’s a contradeal where they speak to their audience about us and we put them in front of our members. “We have really enjoyed partnering with British Eventing, providing sponsorship, which gives us access to events . We always go along with a fun element. It’s not about selling – it’s about getting out there.”
The One Club community
Analytics reveal that 60 to 70 per cent of customers are female, most aged between 30 and 50. They are based across the country and all participate in social media. “They really like our closed Facebook group, which we let them run, and they chat away among themselves,” says Lewis. Social media plays an important role in the daily activity of the One Club. “We are really committed to it,” explains Lewis. “It’s a great place to build a scalable audience and to keep consistent engagement going.”
Selling on different platforms
In addition to its own website, Harry Hall and Masta products are sold on Amazon and Decathlon. “We have stores on here that are doing really well,” says Lewis. “We used to worry that we were giving away a certain amount of our margin, but we have flipped that thought around in our mindset and can see that it is another marketing channel that makes us money. “It has the potential to bring us customers who might never get to our website or don’t search on Google because they just have Amazon on their phone.”
As head of digital and e-commerce, Lewis Wilkinson has responsibility for bringing customers to the harryhall.com website and for the buying that takes place there. He also oversees all other marketing channels such as Amazon and PPC advertising, and does all the forecasting for spend and performance, and planning. “I am responsible for the biggest spend in the business – outside of paying staff – and I’m very aware of this,” he says. “However, we work together and the production team has done an amazing job of buying so well recently that my job becomes really easy.” Before Lewis came to Harry Hall, he worked at Leeds Bradford Airport. “People love going on holiday, but they don’t love airports,” he says. “When you have covered the coalface of social media messaging in an airport, you have definitely seen the best and worst of people.”
ETN asks Lewis…
Q: What do you know about your members’ horses? Some share a horse, others own horses of a lower commercial value and some are non-riding horses. Q: What products are most popular for you? We do really well with Harry Hall legwear and safety, and we have massively invested in Masta. Q: Where is Harry Hall International based? We moved to our new office in Bradford last September. It is lovely and airy, and we are all based here. Q: Is there a time you particularly enjoy at work? I love when we do a showcase with next season’s products because everyone gets involved and tries stuff on, and they show me on which end of the horse something goes! Q: What do you do when you’re not working? I’m a bit like a horse – I’ll be out in a field, as I do lots of long-distance running and hiking.

ETN | BETTER BUSINESS
A bit on
the side The average Brit with a side hustle generates £900 a month outside his or her day job. Nice work if you can get it, says Ritchie Clapson. Getting started…
Every side hustler has one thing in common: they somehow managed to get started. So, don’t feel anxious about jumping in, you're in good company. Accountability can help, albeit it's more stick than carrot. Tell everyone you know you're going to do it, and you won't dare back out! It’s crude but effective. Take a leaf out of Nike’s book and just do it.
Avoid perfectionism…
We all want to do a good job, but the old 80/20 rule usually bites perfectionists on the backside – they spend 80% of their time perfecting the last 20% of their work. Aim for good rather than great and get your productivity rate up – or even just get the business launched in the first place. You’ll only truly learn from experience, so embrace the lean startup approach. Just get started, learn from what happens next and then pivot accordingly. Too many people aim for perfection at the outset and never get out of the blocks. Or, as General Patton famously said: “A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.”
Avoid burnout…
Don’t be the wealthiest person in the graveyard. There’s no point in working all hours on your side hustle if you don’t enjoy the fruit of your labours. Set limits 26 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
on how much time you spend on it, and carve out time to spend with family, friends and R&R. Make sure your side hustle doesn’t compromise your day job. You might enjoy it more, but remember which one pays the bills, at least initially.
Outsource when you can…
Outsourcing can often make good financial sense. Websites such as fiverr. com, upwork.com and peopleperhour. com allow you to tap into the global gig economy. If part of what you do could be done by someone on the other side of the world for a fraction of the cost, it frees up your time and increases your overall productivity. Many people simply do the marketing and sell something produced by people working in the Philippines or India.
Know your market…
Understand who your competitors are and what they’re offering. How will your offer be different? Make sure there’s a market for your product or services; consider running some dummy ads to check out demand. If you will be working with other organisations, check them out thoroughly. There are plenty of rogues out there whose advertised returns can be unbelievable, so google other customers to find first-hand experience.
Separate your finances…
Set up a business bank account and ensure that all the transactions relating
to your side hustle go through it – not through your personal bank account. This applies to income and expenses. Ultimately, you’ll pay yourself the profits, but make sure the money goes into your business account first. This makes it easier to manage your business effectively in the long run. Have a rainy-day fund for emergencies, and make life easier by taking advantage of the many online software tools available for managing finances.
Pay your taxes…
Depending on how much you earn from your day job, you will likely owe taxes on any side hustle profits. While some may be tempted to ‘forget’ to declare it, the last thing you want is an unexpected tax bill. Set aside some of your profits to pay tax. Ideally, engage an accountant – it won’t cost a fortune and it may even save you tax.
Set realistic goals…
Set annual and quarterly targets for your business and let these guide your weekly activity and goals. Track your progress and be realistic about your expectations – it can take time to build a sustainable business. Equally, celebrate your successes to keep you motivated.
Don’t over-commit…
If giving up the day job is the ultimate dream, don’t be too quick to hand in your notice. Many people see money start to roll in from a side hustle and mistake revenue for profit. They can also be over-optimistic about growth and assume that a few good months will automatically mean every month thereafter will be great too. Ensure your side hustle is producing 1.5 or 2 times your job income before you leave and that it’s been doing so reliably for a while. After all, you only want to give up your day job once.

ETN | MISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN
In the name of science
BETA is on a mission to clear up confusion caused by misinformation. ETN asked the experts from the trade association’s Feed Committee to answer the questions that are on many of your customers’ minds. Equine nutrition companies sometimes talk about their products as being ‘scientifically proven’. What exactly does this mean? This statement is ambiguous and likely to mean different things depending on the context in which the manufacturer is using it. Breaking it down reveals how important context is. The word scientifically literally means something that relates to science or uses the methods of science, the implication being that the ingredients have been tested objectively and independently. However, we don’t know that for sure unless the references for some relevant papers are included. If references are made available, they may relate to studies conducted in other species. This is quite common as fewer studies are done in horses for various reasons, but it is important that the results have been extrapolated and
interpreted with an understanding of the differences between species and the potential implications that might have. Whilst appreciating that manufacturers are often limited for space and so look for short phrases and terms to communicate key features and benefits of products, the detail does matter too. If the phrase ‘scientifically proven’ is used in relation to ingredients, it matters which ingredients are being referred to. Is it every ingredient included in the formulation or just those with functionalities relevant to a particular issue? A manufacturer might use the term to highlight that they’ve sourced well researched ingredients. However, from the purchaser’s perspective, it is important to note that it doesn’t mean the manufacturer has included them at levels that have been shown to have an effect. As a retailer, it’s likely you are asked for guidance by customers; so knowing more about the products and their formulations
can be really helpful in giving you confidence to make recommendations. If you haven’t already had product training, why not request some and ask a few questions about studies that have been done? The most concerning word in this claim is proven. It’s a concise but somewhat lazy term as rarely, if ever, is an ingredient proven to do anything in science. It might seem pedantic to quibble over semantics, but this is such a crucial concept when it comes to ‘science’ that the phrase ‘scientifically proven’ is actually a contradiction in terms! Scientific methods and statistical analysis are about demonstrating how likely it is that a result didn’t occur by chance. In equine nutrition, in particular, we rarely have large enough studies to produce results and therefore conclusions with absolute certainty. If someone uses this term, it is a good indication they simply don’t understand this most fundamental concept of science!

MISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN | ETN Some products are promoted by phrases such as ‘backed by research’ and ‘supported by science’. Does this mean that species-specific research has been done on horses? How do I know that the research is independent and robust? When a manufacturer attaches statements such as ‘backed by research’ to a product, it may mean that the ingredients within the product have been studied or, less frequently, it may refer to the whole product having been the focus of trials. If the company doesn’t state specifically that the studies they are referring to have been done in horses, then it is worth checking the details. While work conducted in other species is valuable, it needs to be interpreted by someone who understands the implications that factors like different digestive anatomies might have. The word ‘research’ is also ambiguous as it may refer to work the company has done themselves such as feeding trials which test things like palatability and shelf-life; or it could relate to studies that have been conducted independently and published in peer-reviewed journals.
The latter is usually the highest quality of study but again, the standard of work in journals varies enormously. There are examples of published work with very small numbers of horses used and no control group ie. no horses to compare to. While the work might provide useful insights, it really doesn’t provide sufficient evidence to support product claims. It is a legal requirement (regulation 767/2009) that any claims made in relation to products should be able to be substantiated. So if you or your customers are concerned about statements being made by companies, you can ask them for more information. The BETA feed committee issues guidance for manufacturers on product claims and labelling and an updated version is coming soon. Equally, the researcher’s interpretation of the results are often the statements and key points that find their way into abstracts – the parts of the study accessible to all to read on the internet. However, reading the whole study can be much more revealing and enlightening – the devil is very often in the detail! Not everyone bothers to pay for and read the whole paper though,
which contributes to soundbites being passed on and becoming received wisdom. Anyone who watches QI can vouch for this phenomenon! Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell who has used studies responsibly and who hasn’t. One indication is the level of claim being attached to them. Responsible companies will make statements along the lines of ‘supporting or helping to maintain a healthy digestive system’ rather than ‘eliminates ulcers’. This is because they understand that most diseases such as Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome are multi-factorial and feeds and supplements are not medicines. This is made very clear by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), the government agency that regulates medicines and marketing claims attached to products. Even if a feed or supplement has published studies to support its efficacy for a particular disease, a manufacturer should not make a claim to that effect unless it has a marketing authorisation to do so from the VMD. This is an important point for companies to consider when they commission studies or want to utilise work that relates to ingredients in their products.

Fresh dung is essential habitat for dung beetles which play an important role in helping us to manage animal waste naturally.
hen we talk about sustainability, even sustainable parasite control, this definition from the United Nations sums it up perfectly for me. And although I don’t want to start off on a downer, by this measure we are currently failing both our horses and the environment. Concern about the overuse of worming chemicals in animals has never been higher. Treatment, where it has been reckless, is causing rapid resistance problems; while a burgeoning area of research is revealing the devastating effects they can wreak on our environment too. Following use, toxic levels of these chemicals are passed out in the dung, crippling soil ecosystems and in particular harming our ‘first responders’ the dung beetle populations and other micro flora and fauna which form the basis of the food chains in our ecosystems. Turn on any nature programme and we quickly learn of the devastating decline of many of our native wildlife species in the British countryside. Much of that starts with the chemicals we put in and on to our domesticated animals, the products of which have terrible unintended consequences in the environment around us.
Poo picking
Research shows that the single best way to reduce chemical contamination AND our reliance on them is to poo pick regularly – this breaks the lifecycle of the parasites by removing the eggs from the pasture before they hatch. But fresh dung is also essential habitat for our dung beetles, little critters that could play an important role in helping us to manage animal waste naturally, negating the need for all that heavy labour and giving a host of added benefits to the land, if we let them. It might seem counterintuitive at the outset but if we can manage our grazing to reduce parasite www.equestriantradenews.com
CPD FEATURE | ETN infection and preserve habitat for dung beetles there are wins all round for horse health and the environment. 1. Start by making sure the parasite control programme is working. Worm egg counts conducted every 8-12 weeks, combined with six monthly to yearly tapeworm testing, will form the basis of horse’s programme. Base the intervals on the relative risk profile of the horse(s) to enable you to identify any problems in the herd and allow any wormy individuals to be treated accordingly. Avoid blanket treatments so there is always some non-toxic dung available to dung beetles. You may need to worm more often and poo pick with greater frequency in the beginning to reduce infection levels. 2. Small redworm eggs laid in dung take around a week in optimal UK conditions to hatch and develop into motile L3 larvae. Research therefore suggests that poo picking twice a week is sufficient to significantly reduce infective larvae on the pasture. Dung beetles prefer fresher animal poo up to 48hrs old. Begin to leave the newest piles on the pasture and clear them after 3-4 days.
Minimise chemical contamination
Of our five licenced wormers for horses, ivermectin is the most toxic to dung beetles and moxidectin moderately toxic while pyrantel, fenbendazole and praziquantel are thought to be significantly less impactful in the environment. I was shocked to discover that between 80 to 98% of an oral dose of ivermectin passes straight through the horse and is excreted in the dung without being metabolised by the body. Once in the environment it’s also one of the most resilient chemicals, persisting at high concentrations in faeces for many weeks leaching into the soil to be absorbed by plants and invertebrates and washed into watercourses, often with lethal effects. This doesn’t mean avoiding these chemicals – we still need to use the right chemical for the job. Ivermectin, for example, is an excellent wormer for targeting adult stages of small redworm through the grazing season when an infection has been identified. But it does mean being aware of it’s potential environmental impact and advising on ways to mitigate it doing the same job out in the environment that it is doing in our horses. 3. Testing first reduces selection pressure by targeting treatments and helps us to select the right chemical, so protecting key medicines. Where treatment is necessary, ensure sufficient wormer is given for the weight of the horse. Recommend administering on a surfaced area so that any spill can be monitored for dosage and cleaned up to prevent it getting into the ground. Add in reduction testing at least annually – a second worm egg count conducted 10-14 days after treatment – to monitor for resistance. 4. Once the wormer is given, minimise the horse’s time on the pasture for up to 10 days and poo pick at least daily during this time. The more eco-toxic the chemical you’re using, the more diligent you should be. This will limit chemical toxins getting into the environment and reduce incidences of tapeworm reinfection for the horse. www.equestriantradenews.com
Wormers licenced for tapeworm treatment (praziquantel and pyrantel) cause packets of tapeworm eggs to be released in the dung which can trigger a surge of eggs onto the pasture in the first few hours after treatment. Most chemicals reach their highest concentration in faeces 24-34 hours after being administered. If you can only stable for a short time, advice is to keep horse in for 24hrs the day following worming to mitigate both these effects. That means if you gave the wormer at 3pm on Saturday, for example, the horse should be stabled from Sunday afternoon until Monday afternoon. It may also help to restrict treated horses to a smaller paddock for 10 days to aid dung collection. 5. Where possible, worm when dung beetles are less active between November and February.
Managing contaminated dung
1. Dung that you’ve collected from treated horses can be placed in a carefully situated manure pile and allowed to rot down. Although dung beetles will be attracted to muck heaps, they generally don't breed in them. Research has shown thermophilic composting (where the centre of the pile reaches a min 60 °C) will cause even ivermectin, one of the most resilient worming compounds, to break down almost entirely in around 5-6 weeks. 2. The siting of muckheaps should be carefully considered. The main environmental risk comes from the impact of residues in rainwater runoff leaching into soils and watercourses. They should be positioned at least 3m outside of fields to prevent hatching larvae re-contaminating grazing land, away from areas where there is a lot of surface groundwater, field drains and not within 10 metres of a watercourse. In an ideal world cover your muck heap with a roof/tarp to reduce the risk of run-off. 3. Manure should not be spread back on the land for at least 6 months (ideally longer). By then concentrations of parasiticides should be low and worm eggs will be much reduced to minimise reinfection, particularly where small redworm are concerned. The eggs of the ascarid parasite have a hard, sticky outer shell that is much more resilient, and their eggs can survive for up to 10 years in soil. Studs and breeding facilities should therefore be much more judicious about disposal of collected dung.
Concern about the overuse of worming chemicals in animals has never been higher.
Benefits of cultivating your dung beetle population
Dung beetles really are nature’s waste disposal teams; they clear-up large quantities of animal faeces by tunnelling and breeding within dung, feeding upon it and burying it below ground. Or they would if we let them flourish instead of systematically poisoning them with routine chemical wormer doses. We have over 60 species of dung beetle native to the UK but numbers have Equestrian Trade News September 2024 | 31
ETN | CPD FEATURE been in massive decline since the 1960s when routine use of wormers was first introduced. Horses can produce around 3-5% of their body weight in dung every day. For an average 16hh horse that’s around 18kg of dung a day or 6.5 tons every year! If we spend half an hour poopicking every day, that is over 182 hours a year on removing dung from our pastures. Their action also fertilises and aerates soils, improving its ability to retain water and increasing nutrient availability to plants - beneficial for both root structures and other organisms. Entomologist, Dr Sarah Beynon suggests they contribute up to £367 million in ecosystem services. They could save us even more time and money if we looked after them better! Importantly the activity of the dung beetles is also thought to break the parasite life cycle by removing the dung medium that acts as the incubator for the parasite eggs. This prevents the
worm eggs hatching into motile larvae which would otherwise wriggle away from the dung and climb the grass stalks to re-infect the grazing horses. Like all conservation projects, dung beetle populations will take time to recover and be greatly influenced by the surroundings outside your fields too. But take heart, there are many benefits to making the effort. Some beetle species
will fly in from up to 10 miles away for the right poo! So, a little bit of strategic thinking to look after these insects will pay huge dividends to our time, our horse’s health and the environment in the long run. An investment worth making for all our sakes and another angle we can use to encourage horse owners to test first and target treatment.

Autumn
laminitis alert
Photos: Edoma/Shutterstock.com, Groomee/Shutterstock.com
Technical and Product Development Manager at Dengie, Dr Katie Williams, explains the risk of laminitis developing in equines and how to best manage it.
Autumn grass can be rich in starches and sugars, leading to a spike in laminitis cases at this time of year
L
aminitis has traditionally been thought of as a disease that develops in the spring alongside the new-season grass but a flush of sugar-rich grass in the autumn can also mean many horses and ponies, especially those who are overweight, are at risk of developing the condition at this time of year, too. This is especially pertinent, as many animals, thanks to summer grazing, start the autumn carrying too much weight, which then increases the likelihood of them developing laminitis. And with equine obesity a significant issue in the UK, many horse and pony owners will, unfortunately, encounter the condition
34 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
at some point. It can be a distressing, costly and time-consuming disease to manage, which is why the high levels of obesity in the equine population currently are so concerning. Laminitis, as it’s generally known, is a manifestation of Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) that the European College of Equine Internal Medicine defines as “a collection of risk factors for endocrinopathic laminitis”. So, what does this mean? The first key point to note is that EMS is, as its name suggests, a syndrome, which means there are known risk factors or symptoms, but the direct cause is not always understood. In the
case of EMS, we know these risk factors increase the risk of laminitis, but we don’t know why in every case. The other key point is that they are only risk factors, so not every horse or pony with one or more of these risk factors will go on to develop laminitis. Finally, endocrinopathic laminitis is laminitis that occurs as a result of disruption to the endocrine (hormone) system in the body, and although there are other causes of laminitis, endocrinopathic laminitis is widely accepted as being the most common type in equines in the UK due to the high levels of obesity in the leisure horse population in particular.

AUTUMN LAMINITIS | ETN What is laminitis?
The layer of tissue that connects the hoof wall to the pedal bone is known as the laminae, and laminitis occurs when this becomes inflamed, leading to severe pain because the hoof wall is rigid and can’t expand to accommodate the swelling. In severe cases, the connection between the laminae and the pedal bone fails, allowing the bone to rotate down – sometimes referred to as foundering. In the most severe cases, the pedal bone may even penetrate through the sole of the hoof.
Signs and symptoms
The disease is more commonly seen in the front feet, and horses suffering from laminitis often adopt a classic stance of rocking back onto the hind legs to take
the weight off those front feet. The horse often also tries to push his weight onto his heels, as the toe area is typically the most painful. The horse will also be reluctant to move and will shift his weight from one leg to another. The lameness is generally more pronounced on hard ground and when turning. A pounding digital pulse is often highlighted as a symptom of laminitis. This can be felt at the back of the fetlock on either side, where a group or bundle of blood vessels are found. Inflammation is usually accompanied by heat, so if the horse’s feet feel hotter and other symptoms are also evident, the vet should be called without delay. Acting fast is the most likely route to reducing the severity of symptoms and increasing the chances of a full recovery.

FAST-WORKING & ECONOMICAL SUPPLEMENTS
Any type of horse can be affected by laminitis, so it’s important to keep weight under control
Reducing the risk
There are some top tips for trying to reduce the risk of laminitis and promote good digestive health: • Keep horses or ponies at a healthy weight • Ensure the horse receives at least 1.5% of his bodyweight as forage per day – use more of a low-calorie fibre source and less of a higher-calorie one • Minimise or avoid cereal-based feeds to help reduce the risk of insulin dysregulation • Use high-quality fibre and oil to provide additional energy for weight gain or exercise if needed • Ensure a balanced diet is provided – low-NSC options such as supplements and balancers are ideal • Slow the rate of intake by using straw both in the forage ration and the bucket feed – this helps to reduce the insulinaemic response www.equestriantradenews.com
• Provide increased anti-oxidant support to help counter the inflammatory effects of laminitis • Ensure the farrier visits regularly to maintain good hoof conformation • Consult the vet if the horse is on box rest due to an injury – consider if there’s a risk of laminitis developing in the supporting limb and provide a deep bed for support when stabled

In the
hot seat
With Rachael Holdsworth, European marketing co-ordinator for Absorbine
How did you come to work with Absorbine, the well-known brand from American company W F Young? I first met [the company’s former president] Tyler Young when I worked as marketing director for Horse Health Products UK. We set up The Wholesale Company to bring a more diverse range of US products to the UK equestrian market and Absorbine was one of the brands we distributed. When I set up my own marketing agency in 2000, Tyler asked me if I could get behind the Absorbine brand marketing and give it a push in the UK. I’ve been working with them ever since. Many horse owners are currently feeling the financial pinch. How is this affecting demand for equine care products like yours? The equestrian market is more robust than some other sectors – horses need caring for and most horse owners will put their horses needs above their own when money is short. However, there are always economies that people can make and this does affect demand, particularly for luxury items. Care products fall into the ‘need to have’ bracket, and having a top-quality product helps, because customers appreciate that they are paying for something that really works and gives them good value for money. Strong brand loyalty can help support demand during these times.
As the day-to-day distribution of Absorbine products is handled through our wholesalers, the trade show is also an important opportunity for us to meet our some of our stockists and hear their feedback. You must have met thousands of retail buyers at BETA International over the years. How can newbie visitors get the best from the show? It is important to plan. Identify your key objectives - whether that is to take on new product lines, visit existing suppliers or gain market knowledge - and make a list of key exhibitors to visit or talks to attend so that you don’t miss them. Then allow yourself time to browse!
Rachael Holdsworth: “The equestrian market is more robust than some other sectors.”
Absorbine has exhibited at BETA International for many years. At a time when so much business is done online, why do live events like BETA International still matter to the trade? You can never underestimate the importance of a face-to-face meeting when it comes to understanding your customers and building business relationships. Covid taught us that it is possible to continue communications and even build relations to an extent using digital technology, but often the nuances of a conversation, or social meeting after the show, are lost online. When you meet in person there is time to get to know people better. There is also the opportunity at a trade show for chance meetings with potential customers who may not have got in contact otherwise. 36 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024

I always tell people to wear comfy footwear, as walking the hall on concrete floors can take its toll on your feet. Which Absorbine product will take centre stage on your stand at this month’s show? We’ve developed the Silver Honey wound care range further, and the launch of Silver Honey Shampoo is our main focus. Plus, we have an exciting new product called Mud Defense that will be arriving soon. What do you think will be the next ‘big thing’ in the horse care and grooming market? Ah, I’ll just check my crystal ball! Some might say that there is nothing new in this world, but there are many clever minds out there and there is always new development potential. There is certainly a current trend in products containing Manuka honey to support natural healing. I am also seeing companies trying to address their packaging to make it more environmentally friendly. You never know what is round the corner, so as a retailer, it is good to keep your eyes and ears open so that you can respond to changing demands.

Post clipping care
Love the SKIN he’s in Skin Wash from NAF is ideal for after clipping. The gentle blend of herbal ingredients, including teatree oil, helps support damaged or challenged skin affected by lumps, bumps, rashes or mild irritations. It can be used as a hot towel wash following clipping. It also makes a great cold wash for a refreshing cleanse to lift sweat, grease and dust from the coat.
• Many owners prefer to employ the services of a professional rather than clip their own horse. For many, it’s a case of weighing up the financial outlay for a set of clippers they might use only two or three times a year versus the professional’s fees. • People who clip all day, every day are usually fast and efficient at the job – which can be less stressful for the animal – and use well-maintained, powerful clipping machines. Therefore this route can make perfect sense for the one-horse owner who lacks confidence or enthusiasm to do the job themselves. • Retailers can help by keeping a list of local clipping contractors in-store and suggesting a few names to customers who ask. • Whether owners do their own clipping or use a professional, they’ll still need shampoos and body washes to clean the horse before and after clipping. Many professionals won’t clip a dirty horse, and understandably so.

Keep them well-oiled
Lincoln Clipper Oil is a fine lubricating oil for all types of clippers to keep them in good working order. The product contains a powerful antibacterial agent – so it cleans and disinfects too. Lincoln is available from Battles.
• Clippers have improved tremendously in recent years in terms of lightness in weight and quieter motors. Improvement in battery capacity means some quite powerful machines now come in cordless options which are ideal for people without power at the yard or who don’t like a cumbersome flex. • Don’t dismiss stocking clippers just because they’re mechanical and alien to the usual equestrian stock. There are some great, cost-effective trimmers on the market now, which have wide all-year-round appeal to consumers. And even when it comes to full-size clippers, the suppliers and reps are only too happy to explain the technical side. • Offering a clipper blade sharpening service will be much appreciated by customers. And if you can deliver a fast turnaround service, so much the better. Even if each transaction isn’t huge, services like this – and rug cleaning too – get customers coming back in-store on a regular basis. T
he gastrointestinal tract of a horse plays a crucial role in meeting energy requirements whilst maintaining health and welfare. The gut microbiota drives fermentation for feed digestion and energy metabolism while constantly interacting with host cells to regulate immunity and inflammatory pathways. Equine feeding and management strategies, transportation and the use of wormers can all impair gut microbial balance and can consequently impact health and welfare. This often manifests in digestive/systemic disorders with stereotypic behaviours. Many pathologies are directly linked to the hindgut such as laminitis, sweet itch, colic and diarrhoea. There is much we still don’t know about the hindgut given differences in research methodologies, small sample sizes, individual variation and ethics limitations. However, we do know that proper equine gut digestive function fundamentally relies on forage, crucially the fibre component. As a herbivorous hindgut fermenter, the capacity and transit
time of the horses’ hindgut far outweighs the rest of the digestive tract. The colon alone represents around 50% of total gastrointestinal tract volume. There are no digestive enzymes secreted by the horse’s hindgut and so functionality is solely focused on the microbial populations present which include bacteria, fungi and protozoa. Very few protozoa and fungi are found in the rest of the gastrointestinal tract and while there are bacteria present within the stomach and small intestine, they are 100x more prevalent within the hindgut; hence most microbial digestion of fibre takes place within the caecum and colon. The microbial population within the hindgut is essential for horse health and there is a delicate balance between species. The digestion of fibre relies on fungi to break down lignin, then protozoa and bacteria, to ferment the complex carbohydrates into short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Very little published data is available on the specific function of fungal and protozoal populations, but the main bacterial species present are Firmicutes (importantly Clostridiales) and Bacteroidetes. ETN | CPD FEATURE Forage first
General feeding guidelines based on literature state that horses should consume 2% of their body weight in dry matter per day, at least 65% of which should be structural fibre. They should chew/ eat for 1213 hours over a 24-hour period with 8 hours being the absolute minimum. Forage should be available ad-lib to fulfil chewing behaviour, gut fill, energy requirements via SCFA production and to support good microbial balance within the hindgut. Horses are very efficient at digesting low quality feed, and this is why forage is essential for an appropriate equine diet. The insoluble fibre found in forage is capable of providing 80% of a horse’s energy requirement via microbial fermentation, irrespective of dietary starch and sugar. Horses are designed to get most of their energy from SCFAs: more specifically the 3 volatile fatty acids butyrate, acetate and propionate. The microbiota composition within the gut can adapt and reflect the diet fed. The more forage fed to a horse, the more efficient the microbial population becomes at breaking down forage into SCFAs for energy. Too little fibre can decrease passage rates and a reduction in SCFA production (due to reduced fibre intake and therefore degradation) may increase oxygen presence within the hindgut as epithelial cells can increase their oxygen respiration. This can result in unwanted aerobic populations such as E. coli being supported, rather than strict anaerobic bacteria with fibrolytic activity for fibre degradation. It is worth noting that correct forage selection for the overweight or obese horse is essential. Although forage is required for gut fill and function, high energy or sugar dense forage such as perennial or timothy ryegrass, alfalfa or rich grass hay should be avoided. It is well known that we should not feed over 2g starch per kg body weight per meal. Glucose transporters in the small intestine can become more efficient over time, but there is a limit and an oversupply of starch will pass through into the hindgut. Starch will sustain negative bacterial populations, resulting in an increase in lactate production and subsequently lactate absorption into the blood. Increased lactate presence reduces the pH of the gut, which can lead to acidosis, and reduce hindgut microbial diversity. Positive cellulolytic bacteria and fungi will also die off releasing toxins, resulting in increased gut permeability. Hence why it is more appropriate to increase fat content within a diet rather than starch and sugars for higher energy requirements. Feeding a high starch concentrate meal before a large amount of forage, can increase passage rates and result in more starch passing into the hindgut, therefore forage should always be available Figure 2. Fibre colonisation before concentrate is fed. and digestion by fungi
Microbial imbalance
There are many factors which can affect microbial balance within the hindgut. After birth, foals acquire their gut microbiota from their dam and the environment within the first 2 months of age. Faecal, colostrum/ milk and solid feed consumption play 44 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
an important role in promoting early microbiota development and balance, with a noticeable shift in microbiota populations seen at weaning. Foals are susceptible to digestive disorders since the gastrointestinal tract is still developing and growth has a high nutrient requirement. Wormers, transport and high-performance have also been implicated in affecting gut microbiota balance and causing a decrease in the diversity/ relative abundance of the microbial community. The redistribution of blood flow away from the intestines during intense exercise, the interaction of the gut-brain axis in relation to physical stress and oxygen release into the hindgut from epithelial cells in response to inflammation and oxidative stress, can all impact microbial balance. Besides energy production and the importance of SCFA production, gut morphology, mucus membrane functionality, nutrient absorption and adequate gut barrier function are all related to the microbial population and level of digestive disturbance within the gut. A diet adequate in fibre with no starch passage into the hindgut will help maintain these beneficial microbes. Even in death the microbial populations are functional as they provide an amino acid source for the horse to utilise.
A role for probiotic yeast
Several strategies have been developed to prevent microbial disturbance within the equine intestine, especially when this stress can be predicted. One commonly adopted strategy is to include probiotics such as live yeast, in the diet. Live yeast can improve feed value by stimulating the growth of anaerobic fibrolytic (fibre digesting) microorganisms including the activity of cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic bacteria. By competing with undesirable bacteria for sugars and other nutrients and producing metabolites such as amino acids and B-vitamins, live yeast can also promote and support the growth of endogenous microbes and in turn balance gut pH. As the density of beneficial bacteria and fungi is increased, the colonization of fibre is enhanced, increasing fibre fermentation. Enhanced colonisation of alfalfa particles by B. fibrisolvens and Conclusion R. flavefaciens has Modern horse husbandry and feeding even been observed practices don’t always support whilst using a specific the natural feeding behaviour probiotic yeast. he Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority (AMTRA) is a not-for-profit body that works to support the sector and it manages the registration of more than 6,000 registered animal medicines advisers (AMTRA RAMAs/SQPs). In June, it held its second employers’ and trainers’ day at Harper Adams University when it shared updates on veterinary medicine regulations for employers, trainers and SQP/RAMAs to allow them to continue delivering excellence across the animal medicines industry. Advice on wormers was particularly well received, as this is an area of the industry that is
46 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
facing significant issues, with parasite resistance and medicines in the environment a hot topic. Another aspect of the day was important to those attending, too, as AMTRA has recently carried out a thorough review of all modules of its training manual and syllabus to ensure the content remains relevant and current. The equine module has incorporated advice from ESCCAP GL 8 (European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites) and it will also include the latest available guidance, when published, from CANTER, the panindustry group set up to address the specific problem of equine wormer
resistance. This will ensure that AMTRAqualified SQPs continue to be educated on the most up-to-date practices and can advise accurately on general horse care and integrated parasite management. www.equestriantradenews.com

Change in structure As well as reviewing the training manual and syllabus, the exam structure has also been looked at. Due to launch in September, this will see AMTRA level 4 exams (Base, Veterinary Nurse, Avian, and Companion) changing from written answers to multiple-choice question (MCQ) format. A change to the pass mark has been implemented, too, following an in-depth analysis of previous passes and academic statistical analysis. The aim behind the change is to maintain the integrity of the qualification following the move to MCQ only, ensuring the qualification remains robust while providing a more efficient process that will be more accessible to students. With this shift to MCQ, a requirement has been added for a minimum pass in the legislation and non-legislation sections of the base and veterinary nurse qualification, further highlighting the probity of the qualification. In addition, students will no longer have to undergo the viva , a move that will further improve efficiency, while also reducing some of the stress students had reported experiencing within the previous exam process. The equine and farm modules remain unchanged in their format and continue to be level 5 qualifications.
48 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
Building credits AMTRA and Harper Adams University have announced a new qualification called the Diploma in Animal Medicines Advice, the first of its kind, being the only formal post-registration qualification for all registered RAMAs/SQPs within every category. The diploma will allow candidates to build on the academic credits they achieved during their SQP training and develop additional skills and knowledge
that will further enhance their expertise. The course was set to run from January 2025 but due to unprecedented demand and a very positive response, it will now be rolling out earlier than expected with the first one starting in September 2024. One attractive and particularly useful feature of the new diploma is that it is comprised of a range of modules that delegates can choose from according to their personal interests and relevance to the work that they do.

WORMING FEATURE | ETN More learning opportunities Also launching in the autumn is the AMTRA CPD Academy, starting with a series of live webinars that will be recorded and available to anyone unable to attend on the day. With an exciting line-up of speakers planned, the first talk will be given by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate on the updated Veterinary Medicines Regulations, with a question and answer session at the end to guide implementation of the regulations. There will also be several speakers from the Moredun Foundation delivering talks that will fulfill the compulsory continued professional development

(CPD) points for farm SQPs, as well as talks featuring parasite control. The pipeline of CPD will be a blend of live and recorded videos, plus text type CPD, and will continue to grow over time. An example of available content is CPD on the new Veterinary Medicines Regulations that came into force on 17 May 2024. In this instance, AMTRA was quick to release the new CPD module and make it available on its website. This CPD details the main changes to the regulations which will
affect SQPs/RAMAs and, as such, it provides a useful guide through each element.
Extra points During March 2024, AMTRA introduced a new element in the form of selfreflective CPD. For this, SQP/RAMAs can reflect on a wide range of CPD, including seminars, meetings, reading, teaching others, etc. Conferences and lectures, such as those as the BETA Trade Fair, will mean a wider scope of CPD can be accessed by SQPs, and, for the first time, this year’s fair will be capitalising on the reflective CPD option to engage AMTRA SQPs. To benefit from the CPD accreditation, it must be recorded within three-months of it taking place and accompanied by appropriate ‘reflection’ – i.e a short description of what has been learnt, how it may impact prescribing or advice and
where further CPD/learning might be taken next. The reflection is guided and a couple of sentences on each prompt is all that’s required. Reflection is usually best completed immediately after the CPD while the experience is still fresh in the mind. SQP/ RAMAs can claim up to 30% of their overall target from CPD that is not AMTRA-accredited in this way, but which supports their role. These selfreflective CPD points will be awarded at the rate of four points per hour of reflective CPD but capped at 30% of overall personal points target, and they must be claimed via the AMTRA website. For more information on AMTRA and its training, visit amtra.org.uk

ETN | LEGAL DIGEST

B
usiness exits can occur for a wide range of reasons - from an approach by a larger organisation wishing to gain market share, to personal requirements to step back, or not wishing to continue with the business. Regardless of the driving factors, the process and considerations for the business owner are broadly similar, and should be given proper thought before committing to a transaction.
Six tips for a successful transaction 1. Early contact with advisors
You may have established relationships with lawyers and/or tax and accounting advisors as part of your business process, in which case any sale will likely have been discussed from time to time, and thought given to the process. If not, before embarking on any transaction, find advisors you feel comfortable working with. A good relationship with them is vital because they will be responsible for guiding you through the process.
2. Transaction structure
The structure of your business, and the nature of the transaction will dictate how the sale is structured. Broadly, a share sale involves selling all (or a majority of) the shares in the company; whereas in an asset sale you retain the corporate entity but sell specific assets. It is a key decision, and should be considered with your advisors at an early stage.
3. Preparatory steps
It’s worth taking time to make sure your business ‘housekeeping’ is in order 54 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
before entering into any sale process. You should undertake an internal review to ensure that the company filings are up to date, all contracts are with the correct entity (and where renewal is soon, consider whether to accelerate this process), and all accounting records are up to date without outstanding queries. Failing to do this will make the process longer and more expensive, since your advisors will be tasked with trying to join the dots to evaluate what assets your business holds, and in what structure. It may also impact negatively on the value of your business: while you are in place, you may hold personal relationships meaning that you feel secure without contractual protection – yet without you, those key supplier/ customer relationships may fall away if they are not properly documented in a contract.
4. Confidentiality and communication
It is imperative that everyone involved is subject to confidentiality restrictions from the outset. This allows you to manage the process more cohesively, and to control the way any transaction is disclosed to your investors and employees. Your advisors should assist in ensuring that communication to employees is timely and constructive: where communication is poor or partial, it can lead to anxiety, reduced morale and potential business disruption or a loss of performance. This can be avoided by putting in place a clear communication plan, emphasising the positive aspects of the sale and potential opportunities for employees.
While the legal process can seem lengthy and obscure, it is crucial to a successful transaction that you work with your lawyers to ensure that the contract properly reflects what is agreed. Timeframes should be respected, and all questions raised before any document is signed – the only stupid question is the one which goes unasked.
6. Transition planning
As the transaction progresses, you need a plan for a smooth transition. While this may seem more of a buyer responsibility, where any value is attributed to the ongoing performance of the business (such as an earn out clause) then it is in the seller’s best interests to ensure that the transition is easily understood and implemented effectively.
Summary
A successful exit is very achievable for any business owner, large or small, provided that appropriate steps are taken in an organised way. You, and your advisors, must take time properly to understand your commercial objectives at the outset, so that the transaction can be directed appropriately to achieve this.

In September 1994, ETN reported:
• Equine healthcare brand Nettex appointed Trilanco as its logistics partner “to enhance service levels to the retail sector.” • As Mark Todd retired from eventing, the multi-medal-winning rider, who was turning to training racehorses, confirmed his involvement with the Mark Todd Collection would continue. • After two decades as a senior buyer in the retail industry, including 13 years with Countrywide, Sara Blackshaw set up her own consultancy. • Zebra Products began distributing Italian brand Cavalleria Toscana to the UK trade.
• Supplement company Animalife said it would no longer supply products to retailers who re-sold them online, thereby breaking the company’s ‘brick-andmortar only’ policy. • Matchmakers International launched its Spring/summer 2015 collection via a series of roadshows. Retailers were invited to four events at different venues to see new ranges from Caldene, Harry Hall, Masta and Cottage Craft. A new Harry Hall logo was revealed too. • Scottish animal feed manufacturer Harbro expanded its retail operation with the acquisition of R H Miller Agriculture. • Simon Middleton took time off from his day job as managing director of Zebra Products to jump a clear cross-country round on Shenanigan at the Festival of British Eventing, presented by BETA at Gatcombe Park.

• Conservative Party leader Michael Howard called at BETA’s stand during the CLA Game Fair. The Leader of the Opposition paused to watch a saddle being made by Jeremy Rudge. • Puffa chose an open-air concert by chart-topping band Blue to launch its Spring ’05 collection. The equestrian connection was the venue – Newmarket races. • Weatherbeeta entertained hundreds of retailers from across the UK and Europe with a trade show and dinner dance at Heythrop Park. “This is not instead of BETA International but a way of showing our customers how things have moved on since,” said general manager Darren Mann. • Saddlery guru and journalist Elwyn Hartley Edwards discussed the Labour government’s attitude to rural matters and warned of “the hovering spectre of a hunting bill being forced through parliament in defiance of both good sense and the democratic process.”
• Police blamed animal rights activists for a fire-bomb which gutted Oxford saddlery C H Brown & Son. Business owner Mike Norton said the timed device was planted in the pocket of a jacket on display in the shop. • Retailers John and Lesley Mason of Penn Tack and Feed Centre in Buckinghamshire urged others to join them in boycotting Masta. They were “infuriated” to discover the rug range being offered via mail order at prices “very close to trade.” • Irish rug-maker Horseware moved into a new £330,000 factory close to its original site in Dundalk. Production had switched to a computer-driven system, a first in rug manufacturing according to the firm’s founder Tom Macguinness. “Our main competitors are in the Far East,” he said. “They can beat us with cheap labour, so we’re responding with state-of-the-art production methods and fast delivery to stockists.” • The Sun newspaper gave body protectors a boost when it reported that a £55 Robin-branded garment had saved Lester Piggott from serious injury in a fall at Goodwood. The legendary Flat jockey had bought the body protector from Gibson Saddlers in Newmarket. Challenger, the distributors of Robin Body Protectors, said demand had soared since the article appeared.

horse’s natural inclination is to move in a slightly downhill fashion – after all, naturally, that’s where he carries around 60% of his weight. However, with his front legs doing the brunt of the work, his hindlegs then take a backseat. As a rider, you need your horse to be working properly through his back so that he can carry you effectively, but this can only happen when he’s working into a soft and light contact that is powered by his hindquarters. In order to generate this energy, you’ll need to strengthen your horse and encourage him to become more supple and balanced. Here are a few targeted schooling exercises to get you started.
There’s barely a schooling snag a leg-yield can’t help to fix – so there’s no surprise that those sideways steps are making an appearance here, too. They’ll supple your horse and encourage him to take more weight behind due to the engagement required to get his hindlegs crossing over, so by making this a regular part of your sessions, you’ll be reaping the rewards in no time. Introduce leg-yield on the three-quarter line, where your horse will be most inclined to move out towards the track. Rather than allowing him to drift, ask him to step with purpose, then... 1. Apply a little pressure with your inside rein for a small degree of inside flexion, but maintain the contact with your outside rein to keep hold of his shoulder.
C
Warm-up wisely
For a horse who’s on the forehand, it can be tempting to try and get him sitting on his hindquarters from the second you set foot in the arena. However, it’s most important to prioritise getting him going forwards first, allowing him to stretch on a loose rein in walk and trot, before you try and refine his way of going too much.
40 HORSE&RIDER
TOP TIP
Switch between these three exercises during your sessions so your horse doesn’t start to anticipate the next move.

2. Move your weight onto your inside seat bone and apply your inside leg on the girth to engage his hindleg and ask him to step him out towards the track. 3. Support your horse with your outside leg behind the girth to keep driving him forward and also prevent him from falling out or leading with his quarters. When you’re confident with lateral steps from the three-quarter line, there’s no limit to where your leg-yield could go. You could add a few extra steps by attempting it from the centre line back towards the track, or zig-zag to and from the threequarter line, changing the bend as you go. It’s easy enough to do out on a hack, too, and has the added benefit of helping you to stride out some tension if your horse is on the keener side.
A great way to encourage your horse to shift his weight backwards is through 90° turns. This technique sounds simple but don’t mistake that for it being easy – it takes a great deal of balance to master. To do it... 1. Ride large around the arena in walk, applying a half-halt as you approach the corner. 2. Apply pressure with your inside hand to encourage your horse to flex slightly to the inside, and keep your outside hand close to his neck. 3. Squeeze with your
inside leg on the girth to encourage him to keep working up into your outside hand, and place your outside leg a fraction behind the girth. 4. Straighten up out of the corner, before repeating in the next one. Once you’re confident asking for square turns while going large, why not take your horse on a square at either end of the arena? You can then upgrade the difficulty by riding a 20m square in the centre of the arena – where you won’t have the support of the corners to help you.

The space saver
If storage space at your yard comes at a premium, you’ll want a dual-purpose piece of kit that works a little smarter. Light in weight, it’ll be easy to move and will keep your kit safe, too.
The foldaway
When you’re frequently on the go, you need something that can keep up. Whether you’re schooling in the field, plaiting for a competition or away from home, it’ll need to be light, easy to handle and simple to stow away.
63.5cm
If it’s all about aesthetics at your yard, you won’t want anything cluttering up your backdrops. But, what if your choice of mounting block could double up as a schooling aid?
The position of your block while mounting is important. Too close and you’ll apply a lot of downward force on your saddle, possibly leading to a slip. Too far away and you’ll have to launch yourself, which will be uncomfortable for your horse.

1. Transitions
A fundamental weapon that every rider should have in their arsenal is transitions. Why? Because they'll improve your horse’s balance and encourage him engage his hindquarter-based engine as he moves between gaits, rather than pulling himself along with his front end. Begin with walk-halt-walk transitions, engaging your core – that is, your stomach, back and seat – to help him maintain his balance and use his hindquarters rather than pulling against your hand. From here, you can slowly build up to trot-walk-trot transitions, and walk-trot-walk transitions.

BETA International is delighted to be supporting Medical Detection Dogs as its Charity of the Year for 2024. Medical Detection Dogs started in 2008, utilising a dog’s incredible sense of smell to help support humans, whether this is in detecting cancer, neurological diseases, specific bacteria, and even malaria; or supporting people with complex medical conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, PoTS, Addison’s Disease and more. Working with the Bio Detection Dogs in this way is hoped to improve the speed of diagnosis for diseases, and Medical Alert Assistance Dogs continue to support people all over the country with life threatening conditions, helping to them lead more normal lives, saving lives, and also preventing many hospitalisations. The work done by the charity is groundbreaking and innovative. Not only will Medical Detection Dogs be having a stand at BETA International, the charity will be giving a talk in the evoke Seminar Theatre each day:

Seeking surefire sales? You need to visit the Best Seller Spotlight BETA International’s new Best Seller Spotlight has been created to help support retailers when it comes to increasing their turnover by stocking product ‘must haves’ that exhibitors know sell well. what to stock – those staples that sell easily day in, day out. That’s when the Best Seller Spotlight was born. “We understand how daunting it can be, especially to new and growing retailers, to know what to stock,” said Claire Williams of BETA International. “There are so many brands available and it can be overwhelming, so when retailers suggested this idea, we did the research to see what the committee and exhibitors thought. And here we are!” Each product on the Spotlight will have key information displayed with it,
with the aim of retailers then going to visit the exhibitor, armed with the knowledge and inspiration gained from the new feature. “We see the Best Seller Spotlight as a valuable tool for both exhibitors and retailers,” said Claire. “It gives retailers more confidence in the product and in approaching the exhibitor, and provides the exhibitor with a platform to celebrate key products even if they’ve been part of their range for a number of years.” The Best Seller Spotlight will be located at 2-H2, on the right hand side as you enter the hall.

Behind the brand Sarfraz Mian, CEO of Neue Schule, shares his thoughts on the importance for research and development, tackling misinformation, and why support for the industry matters to the company.
Neue Schule, BETA International’s title sponsor, is getting ready for another successful show. Although the company has a global reputation for excellence, we wanted to go a bit deeper, so caught up with Sarfraz Mian, Neue Schule’s CEO, to find out more about how the company supports its stockists, why research and development matters, and why you need to make the Neue Schule stand a must-visit at BETA International 2024.
Neue Schule is known Misinformation is an issue in as being a champion the equestrian industry and for the trade, can you beyond- do you find your tell us how you support commitment to the research and development (R&D) side your stockists? helps to address this? We have been operating for many years and in that time, we have developed a lot of resources that are designed to provide expertise to people stocking our products. The challenge is, there is a lot of mystery associated with bits, a lot of misinformation, and it’s quite a complex area for staff to get their heads around, and we recognise that. It’s our responsibility to make sure that people are confident when they’re talking about our products, so we’ve developed a number of tools and resources that provide assistance to shop managers and also those on the shop floor who are giving advice to customers. 68 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
This started many years ago with us looking at the materials used in bits, and we spent a huge amount of time trying to identify the most suitable material for the mouthpiece for the horse. From that point it expanded, and we looked at the ergonomics, and that got us thinking about how bits actually work, and that started many years of research to get to the bottom of the dynamics of it all. That research led to several papers and several patents and that process has informed our designs since that point.

Thinking of BETA International, why should people make sure they come and see Neue Schule at the show? As we are all wrestling with the challenge of social license to operate across equestrian sport, having good data and good R&D activity that backs up the designs of products and demonstrates that they are kind and deliver performance in a fashion that takes into consideration horse welfare is vitally important.
The displays on the stand at BETA International are so interesting with the internal anatomy of the horse’s head depicted, and how this corresponds with bridles and bits. Why is this such an important part of the Neue Schule stand? We can’t demonstrate all the R&D that we have undertaken on the stand, but showcasing the horse and the internal structures highlights the need to develop kind products. There really are a lot of pressure points around the horse’s head and we need to be developing and using products that are mindful of those pressure points when creating and delivering a solution.

The evoke® evolution
evoke® burst onto the equestrian scene just a few short months ago, but since this time has made a significant impact on the safety market, providing innovative options created to keep riders safer.
What makes evoke different?
Inspiration
The idea came to founder, David Mitson, when he had a fall from his own horse. He was hacking, his horse spooked and he fell. He was wearing a hat, but still suffered a concussion, which was worse than any sustained during his time playing elite rugby. This set an idea in motion, and some £3 million pounds in investment later, evoke was born.
70 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
The business was formed with quality at the heart, and the team is built from leaders in the space, including Technical Director Helen Riley. Dedicated to safety, Helen sits on the European Standards Committee and will also be speaking on the evoke Seminar Theatre stage twice during BETA International, to talk about safety. Additionally, evoke has its own British Standards Institute (BSI) certification, tests products in Great Britian, and the hats adhere to PAS 015: 2011, VG1, ASTM F1163-23, and EN 1384:2023 (pending), and carry the British Kitemark to PAS 015 and CE/UKCA certification. Leading the way, evoke is working ahead on the future of safety, and integrates additional standards as well as MIPS technologies in some styles. “We took a very different approach
with our products,” said David Mitson, CEO of evoke. “Our own certification and kitemark took a lot of time and investment, but for us it was essential. When you want to lead the way, and a new era of equestrian safety, it’s important to do the right thing.”
Helmet Replacement Scheme
Another innovation from evoke is the Helmet Replacement Scheme. Further cementing the company’s dedication to rider safety, evoke identified the issue that riders are less willing to replace a hat damaged in a fall if they’ve only owned it for a short amount of time. As such, the Helmet Replacement Scheme reduces this financial burden should the fall be sustained within six months. This is an industry first and is also a very useful sales tool for retailers. www.equestriantradenews.com
BETA INTERNATIONAL | ETN The collection
The range of helmets continues to expand in line with customer demand, to cover a variety of disciplines alongside trends and styles. Callisto® is the name of the peaked helmet, available in classic and wide peak, in a huge range of finishes including matt and gloss with crystals, metallic, and self coloured inserts to cater for all tastes. The skull cap collection, Orion®, also comes in a range of matt, gloss, and carbon finishes, with the vent details available in several colours. With another three peaked helmets in development and two further jockey skulls, the evoke collection will be the largest collection of any safety brand worldwide by 2025.
Rider endorsement
evoke has already received the seal of approval from many of the sports leading riders, with a bespoke Callisto evident on the podium at the Paris Olympics. Chris Burton, Kristina HallJackson, Emile Faurie, Tom Goode, Hannah Biggs, Myrtle Hallion, Claire Deuten, Jake Ward, Jay Buxton, Evie Evans, Cerys McCauley, Alena Hughes, Abi Walters, Grace Taylor, Aaron Millar, Flora Harris and Lucinda Mesquita have all joined “Team evoke”
Becoming approved
As any safety brand knows, the product is only part of the story, and that is why evoke invites applications from retailers wishing to become approved retailers and fitters. “Correct fitting is essential, that’s why we’ve created a system that allows small adjustments through the liners to ensure the perfect fit,” said David. “As such, we invest time and
resources in our retailers to ensure they share our ethos and have the training to provide their customers with the best service and, of course, the best fit.” To find out more about evoke, to see the collection, speak to the team, and find out how to become an Approved Retailer and Fitter, go and visit the team at BETA International and see. www.evoke-group.com
The science to supplements Multi award winning supplements company, Science Supplements, has a huge range of products available for horses and dogs. One of the key themes across the range is the ‘science’ isn’t just in the name, it’s in everything the company does. The brand’s ethos focuses on producing products that are effective, and this is proven through laboratory, clinical and field trials. So dedicated is Science Supplements to this that there are currently over 18 research papers on products bearing its name, and the team developing the products includes veterinary surgeons and PhD holders too.
Guarantee Stock and fitting
Hats are available in three shell sizes with the final fit within each size adjusted through changeable, washable liners. These are available in a range of sizes to get the perfect fit, and allow customers to buy more than one so they can keep their hats clean and hygienic www.equestriantradenews.com
Science Supplements operates in a transparent way, allowing customers to understand exactly what they’re feeding, and declares all active ingredients as well as being more than happy to compare products against
those of competitors. So confident is the company, that it guarantees the highest level of active ingredients compared to any other brand.
Shelf appeal
For retailers, the Science Supplements range is visually appealing with key information about ingredients, feeding amounts and how long the product will last clearly displayed. With tubs, syringes, pouches and oils available, the range accommodates people’s personal feeding preferences.
Cross selling to canine customers
In addition to equines, Science Supplements also provides supplements for dogs across joints, digestion, calming, coat, and old age categories. With many equestrians also owning dogs, this is a great opportunity.

New Automotive partner for BETA International The new generation 4x4 that’s not only built for top performance in all conditions but also offers real driving pleasure.
I
n 2017, INEOS Chairman, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a car enthusiast and experienced adventurer, identified a gap in the market for an uncompromising 4x4 engineered for modern day compliance, comfort and reliability. INEOS Automotive was formed to bring the vision to reality. Replacing the existing two-seat Utility Wagon in the model line-up, Grenadier Commercial is a customised version of the class-leading 4X4 that qualifies owners to reclaim the VAT. Customers in the UK have been asking for this addition since the Grenadier’s 2022 launch, so INEOS is pleased to make Grenadier Commercial available and to confirm it’s Built For Business.
A practical build that will last
The versatility of the Grenadier platform allows for a commercial vehicle without any compromise to the driving dynamics or off-road capabilities. Most notable in this variant’s spec are the full-length flat floor, designed to comfortably carry a Euro pallet, your equipment and feeds, or four muddy Labradors. The Grenadier’s outstanding towing capabilities remain unchanged.
Whatever you need to move, the Grenadier lets you load it, tow it, drag it, recover it, or strap it to the roof. It boasts 3.5 tonnes’ towing capacity and 5.5 tonnes’ winching power for recovering yourself or others. Per INEOS’s exacting requirements, high-quality materials are standard in the Grenadier. Top components from renowned automotive partners, a rigorous, global testing programme and exceptional corrosion protection are all part of the package. This is backed up with a class-leading warranty. The Grenadier is built to last. Engineered to keep you going year after year after year.
Filling the gap
“We are delighted to be partnering with INEOS for both BETA and the BETA International Trade Fair,” says BETA Executive Director Claire Williams. “We look forward to working with INEOS to develop both member benefits and off-road experiences in the future. The new Grenadier Commercial fills a gap in the market for members of the trade seeking a real workhorse vehicle on and off the road.”
Visit the INEOS Grenadier stand 2-D10 to find out more about the new Grenadier Commercial. Off road tests will be available on site during BETA International. Please visit the stand to book. 78 | Equestrian Trade News September 2024
