> THIRD AGE - FOURTH AGE

The ‘Third-age’ was defined by social historian Peter Laslett in A Fresh Map of Life: The Emergence of the Third Age. (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1989)& discussed in relation to architecture by Deane Simpson in “Third Age Urbanism: Retirement Utopias of the Young Old”, (ETH, 2010), 12.

Increasing longevity and a low birth rate has led to a skewing of the age structure of the population. As this large cohort reach retirement, special consideration has been given to the shift between working adult and senior citizen. “THE

TRADITIONAL NOTION OF ‘OLDAGE’ HAS BIFURCATED BETWEEN THE AILING AND DEPENDENT ‘OLD-OLD’ (THE FOURTH AGE) AND A NEW AND RAPIDLY EXPANDING POPULATION OF HEALTHY AND INDEPENDENT ‘YOUNG-OLD’ (THE THIRD AGE).” This ‘Third-age’ has become synonymous with the framing of the Baby Boomer cohort. The identity of the Baby Boomer is as much a cultural construction as it is an age cohort; with a large differentiation in affluence, longevity, education and ethnicity.

For the Boomers, retirement and old age are what their parents had and differentiating themselves from this by inventing alternative identities and lifestyles is highly important. In the satisfying of this new identity there is a rejection of age associated activities and retirement typologies. Baby Boomers are searching for living options beyond the retirement-village model and pursuits beyond being diverted to the bowling or golf club.


> The Baby Boomers are often described as a “disconnected generation”2, a collective of individualists, and it is increasingly suggested that their perception of ageing sits in opposition to this autonomy. Thus as they age they will seek to differentiate themselves from an old-age cohort, developing alternative identities, activities and living conditions.

Marketed to all their lives, the Baby Boomers have been encouraged to define themselves by personal materialist choices. “ Their experience of consumerism is a kind of reconciliation between the desire to make ever more personalized choices and the need to remain within homogenised systems for managing them.” For the Baby Boomers consumerism is a vehicle for self-differentiation and a mode in which they exert their Young-old identity. Shane Murray observes that, “…the values of consumption and lifestyle have begun to take precedence over the role of the home as anchor of personal identity.”3 IN

CONTRAST TO PREVIOUS GENERATIONS WHO VIEWED THE HOME AS A SYMBOL OF STABILITY, THIS ‘YOUNG OLD’ SEE PROPERTY AS THE ECONOMIC FACILITATOR FOR A GREATER FLEXIBILITY IN RETIREMENT. OFTEN THE SINGLE LARGEST ASSET, THE HOME IS A PRODUCT TO LIQUIDATE IN THE ACQUISITION OF LIFESTYLE.

THE NEW-OLD

The ‘young-olds’ wish to challenge previous generational approaches to ageing; rejecting age-associated activity and retirement typologies represents a new market for architecture. But it also highlights the need for architecture to propose new ways of negotiating space, catering for individualism without designing architectures of exclusion or segregating by age, gender or sexual orientation.

THERE IS A NEED FOR THINKING BEYOND PARADIGMS OF ‘CARE’, ‘ACCESSIBILITY’ & ‘UNIVERSAL DESIGN’.

Despite the strong case for rethinking the notion of “oldage”, the emphasis within urban or architectural discourse on ageing remains focused on traditional paradigms of “care” and “accessibility” and a doctrine of progress in relation to the Internet. Technological determinism dominates urban strategy and welfare. An over emphasis (and funding) on retrofitting the city with ‘smart’ technologies represents a sidelining of more systemic challenges regarding an ageing society.

The ‘medicalization’ of architecture, or the medical rhetoric to describe urban problems, leads to a tailoring of requirements to particular groups, conflicting, contradictory solutions and an even greater segregation of various demographic groups.


, ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTION, FOLLOWS A SIMILAR LOGIC IN DESIGNING THE INDIVIDUAL’S ZONE OF “CARE”.

AS A RESULT OF A PREOCCUPATION WITH THE OLD-OLD

THE RADIAL LOGIC OF MANY RETIREMENT VILLAGES ORGANIZES PROGRAMME INTO A SERIES OF CONCENTRIC CIRCLES OF INDEPENDENCE RADIATING OUTWARDS FROM A CENTRAL CARE FACILITY.

The arrangement of typologies within reflects the stages of aging; from detached independent living at the perimeter of the site to final hospitalization in the centre of the complex. This centralization is also mirrored in its economic logic, with a trust or individual owning and managing the complex.

The retirement village has commercialized community, manufacturing it through nostalgic imagery and dissolving it to merely an advertisement. Much of the inclusive nature, impression of commonality and belonging within retirement typologies is facilitated by a limited socio-economic structure and focus on shared leisure facilities. Retirement developments are highly successful in their packaging of nostalgia and lifestyle.

The theming of the architecture, the use of a repetitive housing type and the miniaturizing of a vernacular are all mechanisms in the engineering of community. The retirement community, the gated community and co-housing are all examples of the manufacturing of community through imagery and language. This prompts further questions as to...

CULTURAL CHANGE Émile Durkheim, a founding figure in sociology in the late 19th century, discussed a shift towards ‘the cult of the individual’. According to Durkheim, this cult grew out of the transition from traditional rural communities to modern industrial cities. Now the cult of the individual has intensified far beyond what Durkheim envisioned.

& THE RETREAT OF THE STATE Current discourse discussed the ageing of society in terms of its economic cost - the imminent ‘drain’ on social servies & healthcare. Following successive fiscal crises, we are being sold a new reality, the individual must plan to care for themselves in ageing, as the welfare state cannot sustain its current level of support. Governments in Northern Europe are placing new emphasis on ‘ageing-in-place’’, shifting away from institutionalized care models.

Although ‘ageing-inplace’ is often welcomed by ageing populations there is great fear & suspicion that care will REDUCE rather than SHIFT. (Much of the infrastucture, policy and economic mechanisms remain centrally organised & funnelled through Health Ministries & Hospitals - which directly contradicts this effort to decentralise care.) According to a 2012 report by the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America - social isolation and loneliness in older men and women are associated with increased mortality.

Ageing in place has been put forward as an attractive alternative (for both the citizen & the state) to institutional care or the traditional retirement village. But does this desire for independence...mask the risk of lonelieness or social isolation?

> HOW ARE AGEING OR RETIRING LGBTIQ ‘YOUNG-OLD’ INDIVIDUALS & COUPLES BEING CATERED FOR ARCHITECTURALLY? Housing options for ageing LGBTIQ’ers range from those focusing on ‘care’ & the ‘old-old’ to glossy gay utopias (yet to be built). Very few cater for both the young-old and their tansition to ‘old-old’ (those that do are in high demand)


HOW DOES ARCHITECTURE ENGAGE WITH THE INTERESTS OF A SPECIFIC DEMOGRAPHIC WITHOUT SEGREGATING BY AGE OR DESIGNING AN ARCHITECTURE OF EXCLUSION?

WHAT ARE THE NEEDS, DESIRES AND EXPECTATIONS OF THE ‘NEW’ MARKET POSED BY THE LGBTIQ ‘YOUNGOLD’? I don’t believe sexual orientation effects the planning of these LGBT developments. The desire to conregate or organise stems from a desire for safety, security or the common ground of being around others of a same-sex orientation. The organisational structure, ownership model and programme of these developments are important in the design of an appropriate architectural product.

BUILT APARTMENTS LOOK OUT OVER A COURTYARD / GARDEN FROM COMMUNAL BALCONIES (2 apartments per balcony. The facade consists of a brick wall with staggered windows creating a different incidence of light in every apartment and facilitate communication among residents. THE GLASS FACADE ON THE GROUND FLOOR creates a distinct visual connection between the communal space and the street. THE COMMUNAL SPACE known as the ‘garden house’ on the ground floor was designed by artist Marcel Kronenburg is enclosed in corrugated plastcic sheeting and floored with artificial turf. This allows residents direct access to the nursing home next door (Die Rietvinck)- so residents who choose to live independently can access care as and when required.

THE BROUWERGRACHT The canal side facade is heavily glazed, screened by exterior shutters which open to create French balconies. The corner of the site is articulated as a brick tower with large punched openings. Beyond the tower, the alley facade is a plinth of masonry with vertical western red cedar boarding; the cedar cladding in turn wraps the rear facade. Windows on the alley and the rear elevation are smaller and more discreet, providing daylight and views but also giving the inhabitants a measure of privacy. The building appears new in its context but responds carefully to the architectural and urban nuances of its sensitive historic context.
