In addition to these central values, climate data, sustainability and energy ef ficiency played a large role in the spatial qualit y of our design. 4

INITIAL CONCEPT & RESEARCH

OUR MISSION During our initial phase of design our team had the opportunit y to meet with the client, the crenshaw school of environmental studies, to answer questions related to program and scale. Th i s m e e t i n g r ev e a l e d t o t he t e a m a n emphasis on programmatic flexibility and shelter from the harsh weather c o n d i t i o n s p r e s e n t o n t he g u l f c o a s t . We also formed a stance on how we wanted this building to interact with its users which was to create teachable moments that are supportive of the students and teachers intellectual and emotional growth.

IN THE FIELD

A LESSON IN SCALE Continuing to let our client interactions guide our design, our team focused on crafting a furniture set that is comfortable and safe for children of all ages as well as the staf f. Standard table and bench dimensions were studied in order to reach these goals. Applied reflect t h i s . To a d d r e s s t h e s c h o o l s r e q u e s t f o r flexibilit y, we supplied 8 shorter benches that can be freely moved on and of f the deck to flow with their ever changing c u r r i c u l u m . Fo r m a l l y, t hi s s e t i s d e s i g n e d to express the working systems of the building but at a scale that is teachable to the students.

I chose to research and apply cross laminated timber (CLT) within my building to spread awareness of sustainable building techniques. 20

AUSTIN GROWTH M AP Shown to the lef t, this map is an accumulation and abstraction of data specifically related to transportation and food consumption in t h e s t a t e o f Te x a s . I b e g a n t o t r a c k “ f o o d miles”, the miles it takes for food to get from farms and meat production facilities to our grocery stores and how those miles might be minimized by increasing local food consumption. In a city poised for growth, even the abstractions of data is influential to show trends and correlations vital for designing this building. After evaluating this data, initial formal concepts began to develop through sketches (below) as well as physical study models (right).

22

CONCEPT RESEAERCH & SKETCHES

STUDY MODEL 01 L AY E R I N G A series of frames were used to create a dynamic system which allowed for a large central space.

STUDY MODEL 02 INTERSECTION Tw o c o m p l i m e n t a r y objects were intersected to uncover an exterior form.

STUDY MODEL 03 SHIFTING Boxes of four different sizes were lifted from on one another to test balance and scale.

STUDY MODEL 01 S I T E E X P E R I M E N TAT I O N In this series of 3D drawings, i explored circulation as a driver for both program and form. Straws along a sting track of interest to curiously test possibilities of massing along the waters edge.

32

STUDY MODEL 02 TENSION In a more rectangular study, string tethers were used to ground the programmatic masses to the site and express the weightlessness of a pneumatic structure.

STUDY MODEL 03 TUBES An aerodynamic form was explored at different heights to further test the connection between weightlessness and connection with the site.
