Rift Cowl - Pattern Preview

RIFT

photo © Laine Magazine

by Emily Greene Rift is a modern, cabled cowl knitted in the round. Rift’s deeply furrowed, geometric cable motif is inspired by the dramatic landscapes shaped by tectonic movement within the earth’s crust. This design is well suited to any solid colour of yarn, but works especially well in light colours and rich, saturated hues. This cowl is sized to be worn wrapped twice around the neck.

INSTRUCTIONS Cast On

Note: If you wish to omit the tubular cast-on, cast on 352 stitches in your working yarn using your preferred cast-on method and Size B needle (suggested size US 4 / 3.5 mm), place marker for BOR and join for working in the round, then work three rounds of 1x1 Ribbing before proceeding to instructions for Ribbing. Work through Round 5 as described in Tubular Cast-On instructions in SPECIAL TECHNIQUES. You now have 352 stitches on your needle.

Work Ribbing

Switch to Size A needle (suggested size US 5 / 3.75 mm). Work 2 rounds in 1x1 Ribbing (see Stitch Patterns).

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES Tubular Cast-On

The tubular cast-on is optional; however, I highly recommend trying this technique, as it yields an exquisitely plump, stretchy edge that transitions flawlessly into the ribbing and cable motifs of the rest of the cowl. Using waste yarn and Size B needle (suggested size US 4 / 3.5 mm), loosely cast on 177 stitches using any cast-on method. Switch to your working yarn for all subsequent instructions. Set-Up Row (Increase row): *K1, YO; repeat from * to last st, k1. [353 sts] Rearrange stitches as needed to join for working in the round, taking care not to twist your row of stitches. Join by slipping the last stitch worked in the Set-Up Row from your right needle to the left (purlwise), then place a stitch marker on your right needle to designate the beginning of the round. Round 1 (Tubular knit round): K2tog, *sl 1 wyif, k1; rep from * to last st, sl 1 wyif. [352 sts] Round 2 (Tubular purl round): *Sl 1 wyib, p1; rep from * to end. Round 3 (Tubular knit round): *K1, sl 1 wyif; rep from * to end. Round 4 (Tubular purl round): *Sl 1 wyib, p1; rep from * to end. Round 5 (True ribbing round): *K1, p1; rep from * to end. You have now completed the tubular cast-on and may remove the waste yarn used to cast on at any time by carefully snipping out or unravelling the cast-on. However, it is recommended that you work 1-2” of fabric before removing the waste yarn to ensure a stable, even edge for your ribbing.

Tubular Bind-Off

This optional technique uses Kitchener Stitch to create a plump, stretchy bind-off that’s a perfect match to a tubular cast-on. This method does not require knit and purl stitches to be separated onto two needles before beginning the bind-off; all steps below are worked into stitches as they appear on your needle after working the final ribbing section. Break yarn, leaving a tail roughly four times as long as the edge to be bound off. Thread tail onto yarn needle, and work bind off as follows: 1. Insert yarn needle into first (knit) stitch on L needle purlwise, and draw tail through gently, leaving stitch on L needle. 2. Bring yarn needle around to back of work (under tip of L needle). Insert yarn needle in between first and second stitches on L needle from the back, and draw tail through gently to front of work. Insert yarn needle into second (purl) stitch on the L needle knitwise, draw tail through gently to back of work. 3. Insert yarn needle into first (knit) stitch on L needle knitwise, and draw tail through gently, slipping stitch off of L needle tip. 4. Bring yarn needle to front of work. Insert yarn needle into second (knit) stitch on L needle purlwise, and draw tail through gently, leaving stitch on L needle. 5. Insert yarn needle into first (purl) stitch on L needle purlwise, and draw tail through gently, slipping stitch off of L needle tip. 6. Bring yarn needle around to back of work (under tip of L needle). Insert yarn needle in between first and second stitches on L needle from the back, and draw tail through gently to front of work. Insert yarn needle into second (purl) stitch on the L needle knitwise, draw tail through gently to back of work. 7. Repeat steps 3-6 until only two stitches remain on L needle. 8. Repeat step 3. 9. Repeat step 5.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES (continued) Cabling without the use of a Cable Needle

This technique is optional, but can make knitting cabled fabrics immensely faster and more enjoyable. As a fringe benefit, you’ll never need to stop knitting because of a misplaced cable needle again! The following instructions are written for the four cable types included in this pattern; once you’ve gotten accustomed to the basic principles, this technique can be adapted to work almost any size or kind of cable.

To work a 1/1 RC cable: The typical instructions for this cable are: slip one stitch to cable needle and hold in back, knit next stitch, knit one stitch from cable needle. To work this cable without a cable needle, you will rearrange the next two stitches on the left needle, bringing the second stitch forward in front of the first, by following the instructions below: Steps 1-3: Work as instructed for 1/1 RPC cable. 4. K2.

To work a 1/1 RPC cable: The typical instructions for this cable are: slip one stitch to cable needle and hold in back, knit next stitch, purl one stitch from cable needle. To work this cable without a cable needle, you will rearrange the next two stitches on the left needle, bringing the second stitch forward in front of the first, by following the instructions below:

To work a 1/1 LC cable: The typical instructions for this cable are: slip one stitch to cable needle and hold in front, knit next stitch, knit one stitch from cable needle. To work this cable without a cable needle, you will rearrange the next two stitches on the left needle, bringing the second stitch forward in back of the first, by following the instructions below:

1. With your right needle, reach across the front of the next stitch on your left needle (subsequently referred to as ‘Stitch A’), and insert your right needle tip into the second stitch on the left needle (subsequently referred to as ‘Stitch B’) purlwise. 2. With your right hand, pinch your knitting just below the first two stitches on your left needle. Carefully slip both stitches off the left needle, keeping them pinched with your right hand. Stitch B should now be on your right needle, and Stitch A should be sitting open behind the right needle. 3. Insert your left needle tip into the open Stitch A, moving this stitch back onto the left needle. Slip Stitch B back from your right needle to your left needle. You have now successfully rearranged Stitches A & B. 4. K1, p1.

Steps 1-3: Work as instructed for 1/1 LPC cable. 4. K2.
