The evolution of Union Lawn throughout history is testament to the living spirit of the university. Through analysis it’s obvious that the Melbourne University of 2016 embraces it’s past, a mixture of different eras of architecture is what makes the Melbourne University Campus the immersive space that it is today.
2. Movement
In the morning, students may have classes, and they always use the fastest way across the space in front of the building. Some of the students may go to union house to buy breakfast.

At the busiest time during the day, most students finish the classes from MSD at this time, or go to another classes. During this time, some pedestrian may sit on the grass to eat or drink.

Commuting
Static activities: Activities done in a particular spot i.e. sitting Dynamic activities: activities which require a lot of movement i.e. commuting
• The most apparent trends in concrete lawn is that much of the static activity is located around the seating areas, outside both Union House and MSD; particularly spiking around lunch time. • This is due to people gathering around seating places when having lunch whilst socialising with others. • Exceptions include the grass patch where people frequently sit on the lawn instead of a bench. • Furthermore, many activities tend to overlap. • However there isn’t much static activity within the centre of the lawn, this may be due to the abundance of people commuting through the lawn instead of remaining there.

Shadow of Concrete Lawn at 5pm in August
General temperature of Concrete Lawn in August
The temperature of Concrete Lawn is subject to the wind, the time and the shadow of the buildings. The temperature of the whole Concrete Lawn is higher at noon. Moreover, the spots covered by the shadow have lower temperature. Furthermore, the spots subjected to the wind are colder. In addition, the spots are warmer when blocked by the trees and the buildings. When compared to the action diagrams, another trends appears as much of the activities occur where it tends to be warmer.
