PORTFOLIO EMILY ZIYU JIANG

Being involved in jewelry design has always been one of my biggest dreams since I was a teenager. Personally, jewelry design has allowed me to discover the other side of myself. I was always an outgoing person, but sometimes I can be unorganized, especially in fashion design, and I always have too many thoughts that can distract me. However, when it comes to jewelry design, I can always be a patient, organized designer without losing my creativity. The inspiration for my jewelry design pieces always comes from nature and exotic culture; for example, the Oracle (inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells of the Shang Dynasty), a magic necklace from the Sahara Desert that was owned by a famous Chinese writer, and which features melting metals.

YU

WORKING PROCESSES

YU Since the Oracle, which depicts inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells of the Shang Dynasty, was my very first jewelry design piece, I decided to keep it personal. The Chinese word I used is the last Chinese character “YU” in my name. It is a homophonic word, as it is the same as “fish” in Chinese. Therefore, I decided to combine these two elements together, the Oracle and “YU”, in a lovely fish tale.

MY BELOVED

My Beloved One of my favorite Chinese writers, Echo, owns a necklace, “Bougudette”, which is her favorite accessory. It is an accessory handed down from generation to generation by Saharan women. "Bougudette" means "my beloved", meaning the love in your heart shines like a gem. I have been looking for it for a long time, but there is no second “Bougudette”, and therefore I decided to make my own for myself. I was inspired by Echo’s story and Tibetan jewelry, and the whole piece was made of silver and featured a lovely gemstone.

Melting Metals Casting is a magic process, regardless of what you chose for the material, whether it be beans, straw or cuttlefish. You can always form the jewelry into different shapes. You can never foretell the outcome, but creativity is always what the artist has to offer.
