STRAW LUX MAP

Lux is the unit of measurement for illuminance and luminous emittance. In my mapping task the lux levels are indicated by the straw colours and lengths. The representation can be cross-referenced with my earlier plans to explain further environmental management of the space. 00 60

classroom amdc 203 The higher lux levels of 350-400 follow the distribution of artificial light and the filtered lighting entering through the South facing window. Lower levels varying from 60-240 are displayed in the blue colour, and are a result of dimly lit areas of the space and indirect lighting.

hawthorn atrium The higher lux levels of 2200-2600 and displayed in a yellow colour follow the distribution of filtered light from above on a higher level of the space. Lux levels varying from 1200-1600 are displayed in the pink colour, and are a result of shading caused by the neighbouring BA building, as well as being further away from the light source above.

06

>>reflections The variants between the perceived light and measured light were noticeable in some of the spaces, and not so much with others.

The atrium, the most comfortable space for myself, showed high levels of lux due to the filtered light streaming into the space from above. The levels of 1000 plus lux give users the functionality to complete visual tasks of an array of difficulties, although 500 lux is probably all that the standards require of the space, as it is primarily for the use of office-like duties ie. computer usage and note-taking, as well as socialising. Within the classroom I perceived noticeably less light than the atrium space, although the light meter’s findings of classroom AMDC 203 showed alarmingly low light levels during the daytime; below the standards level expressed for ‘visual tasks moderately difficult’ of 500 lux, although above the desk light placement complied with visual tasks moderately easy found in spaces such as libraries and lecture theatres. I was surprised to find that higher lux levels were detected in the multi-level car park than our classroom.
