About me I’m currently in my final year of studies at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, + during my Honours am focusing on Connection within Multi-Residential Environments. During my studies there have been a number of subjects that have helped to define and develop my design aesthetic; in particular the Philosophy of Interior Architecture component and a Design Studio specifically suited to Sustainability. Although I try to maintain an environmentally conscious household (we even have a compost!), learning in detail about the elements of designing a sustainable building was a powerful and inspirational experience. Along with a passion for sustainability, I enjoy designing colourful and textured spaces, with a focus on materiality. My favourite moments of the year occurred during my internship abroad, which took place in Berlin, Germany. I spent January – March 2020 working at multi-disciplinary design office Site Specific Ideas. The work engaged me with the city I was in, and gave me the opportunity to use photography in my dayto-day work. Although the rest of this year wasn’t everything I was anticipating it to be, it’s been an opportunity to reflect, readjust and use my final projects to focus on design for a more sustainable future.

Emma Dobbie Interior Architecture Graduate Spiel:

As an incredibly recent Interior Architecture Graduate I am very excitedly awaiting my first “real job”. I personally place a deep importance on happy design - the comfort and sensory stimulation one may feel in a space, while reducing the impact it has on our precious planet. I also highly value integrity with interpersonal relationships, whether this is between clients, the team, or industry-ties.

Professional Experience:

Design Intern - Site Specific Ideas (2020) I worked directly with founder of Site Specific Ideas in Berlin, Germany for an 8-week internship at the beginning of the year. During my time with the multi-disciplinary design studio I worked on a number of different projects including; documenting street art in prior Bärenquell Brewery, design of a co-working space, and assisting in ongoing ‘Along the Lines’ collaborations with artists in and around Berlin signal towers. Photographer - Freelance (2019) Photographed construction works for documentation + advertisement purposes. Edits for a number of photographs using Lightroom. Exhibition Assistant - Denfair (2018) During Denfair I assisted exhibitors with stall set-up, styling of design stalls, wayfinding, and liasing with guests. Interior Design Inter - Hirsch Bedner Associates (2016) During this 4-month internship (once weekly) I learnt valuable skills and enjoyed the experience of working within an interior design office. My favourite part of the internship with HBA was colour selection and material board presentation for a luxurious Asia-based hotel project. My duties included a variety of tasks from FF+E and design documentation to moodboards and writing client briefs.

Education:

Bachelor of Design (Interior Architecture) (Honours) (2020) Swinburne Institute of Technology Advanced Dip. of Interior Design (2016) Holmesglen Institute Victorian Certificate of Education (2006) Bendigo Senior Secondary College

Abilities:

AutoCAD Autodesk Revit ArchiCAD SketchUp Microsoft Office

Adobe InDesign Adobe PhotoShop Adobe Illustrator Adobe LightRoom Adobe Premier

Interests:

As a visual person I love to travel to source inspiration during my exploration of other cities, settings and cultures. Working and living in Berlin has most definitely shaped me as a designer. Photography and capturing the gritty and grimy side of architecture has always had a place in my heart.

Projects:

Flinders Lane Multi-Resi (2020) The concept behind this CBD Brutalist Architectual building was “Connection, something that may have been lacking for most Melbournians for the last 6 months or so! The design proposal tackled phenomenology, with design elements focused on user experience and interaction in these socially distanced times.

Well-being within Public Housing (Thesis) (2020) The research thesis for my Honours year was interested in the well-being and mental health of inhabitants of Australian public housing, and the cause and effect of their interior environments. Quarry Hill Bathroom (2020) Small-end residential bathroom renovation for early 20th century Federation Style house. Concept proposal has been accept and currently awaiting restrictions to ease for trades to commence work on site.

Other Experience:

Sustainable Gift Wrapper - Bindle (2020) Boutique gift boxes hand made (by me) and filled with lovely local products. Waitress - Min Lokal (2020) Customer service, professional smiler, multi-tasker and mathematician. Barista - North East Precinct (2018) Coffee artist of many versions of the singular leaf.

Connection within MultiResidential Environments

+

Connection is an attribute especially important given the current state of the world. The global pandemic of COVID-19 has erased a large part of what people refer to as ‘connection’ in the social sense. Connection within multi-residential environments will join the users of the building with their surrounding environment, each other, and the sky above. This will be achieved by use of phenomenology in architecture, ergonomic design and selection of materiality. images listed clockwise starting from top right: 1. FORMS B U I L D I N G FO OT P R I N T

Thinking back to the bike chain and it’s connecters, I’ve taken that shape and distorted it. By exploring these forms and allowing them to ripple, I experimented with shaping the void. The organic shape connects to human nature, the external forms are scultped to allow for a parasitical architectural passage way.

12

Parasitical Architecture

After playing with the form and materials, I decided to splash it with a striking colour. Yellow is the colour of happiness, sunshine, and grabs our attention. This ensures it stands out from the Flinders Lane crowd, adding new to the old, boosting resident pride, and giving itself that land-mark status.

The open scenery demands attention, circumambulation of the void, or a walk along the external passage ways.

Platform 3 ~ Student Hub

“I think it’s a county in a climate crisis.”

Photograph of facade shading depicted on physical model

Like an illegible pixelated image, squint reallllly hard and maybe you can make it out. Similarly, I’ve centred my design around shapes, pixels if you will. This is a light commentary on the magic-eye that is our current environmental emergency, and the “illegible” truth about climate change. If you dig deep enough, look hard enough, you’ll discover the economic driven moneyhungry powers behind these environment destroying disasters. But let’s keep it light.

22

This project speaks of sustainable design; and the bespoke shading relays this messages. The “green forms highlight the Don Arcade entrance along Glenferrie Road while shielding users within the proposed Student Hub. The shading is carried through several areas of the precinct, defining the new sustainable spaces and following a distinct, easy to follow typology.

The shading exploration shows an evolution of the shapes + the process of collating them, ensuring space for movement, and adding an element of wonder with the small triangular cut-outs.

As demonstrated with a physical model, the proposed shading will provide users protection from harsh sun penetration while paying tribute to the shadows cast.

platform 3 ~ student hub

Lower level journey begins... Hi, I’m Leonie and I just missed my train. Glenferrie’s Platform 3 connects to the Student H

Meet Leonie, full-time Design student at Swinburne University and potential user for the proposed Student Hub on Platform 3 of Glenferrie Station. Follow her journey; after missing the train, she wanders into the Student Hub to cool down, and decides to spend some time up on the Mezzanine to catch up on an assignment.

Let’s go upstairs for some downtime.

A quick break in the mezzanine study space.

Hub, so I can catch my breath in comfortable surroundings.

Making a quick dash to catch the 4:32, ciao!

When the next train arrives it’s easy enough to pack up, head down the staircase and out onto the platform. See you next time Leonie, and don’t forget to touch on!

Post Apocalyptic Retro-Fit

Abandon station taken by nature

St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow, Russia

Lone figure absorbs the environment Light injects itself into a prior subway

I’m inspired by artist Vladimir Manyuhin’s photo-realistic series “Life After the Apocalypse”, which takes real life scenes and transforms them into the “future”, showing the beauty of nature taking back the earth. My design is able to translate this; as I’ve imagined nature being incorporated into this space in a natural and uninterrupted form.

My design response incorporates use of natural resources in a sustainable and unobtrusive way by harnessing natural light, rainwater and air through the buildings proposed shape, openings, layout and materials.

As demonstrated in the diagram; wall openings allow for air to enter the building and pass users. The breeze activates sensory receptors, and provides natural ventilation; which aids in the hygiene of the space along with oxygen renewal. Circulation allows for stale air to exit the building via the roof openings. Plant life within spaces also enhances air quality.

Partition walls play a major part in the circulation of air and people in the building. Studio spaces can be merged when partitions are completely opened, and separated when closed. Semi-closed partitions leave users with the option of pin-up walls ie. an exhibition space.
