space saving: • facade + roof top act as power generators, water collection + filtration • pipes and systems are located mainly between levels

The most prominent feature of PIXEL is the building’s facade. The panels are strategically placed to allow for maximum daylight, shade, views and glare control.

>>materials

Zero-waste + recycled ALPOLIC panels developed by Mitsubishi Plastics Composites Division

smart facade: • external planters create shading + grey water treatment • fixed shading louvers • double glazed windows • natural ventilation automated on a cool night • daylight glare control

>>air Exhaust air purged via exhaust risers

passive heating/cooling The use of passive cooling/heating ie. the shading facade, glazing, and insulating green roof compliment the systems in place.

Passive energy reduction schemes include ‘take the stairs’ decals + increased bike-parking spaces on site.

Tracking photovoltaic panels follow the suns orientation throughout the day

energy harnessing: • roof top wind turbines • tracking PV panels • fixed PV panels • anaerobic digester

>>water Anaerobic digester uses methane to create energy

PIXEL has a self sufficient water supply and if Melbourne continues an average rainfall (for decade 1999-2009), could be disconnected from the mains supply.

Black waste from vacuum toilet system directed to anaerobic digester

Black water waste leaves site via sewer

Note: the building only works if occupied! The external plants on unoccupied level 2 were dried up from lack of toilet flushes = grey water.

the future is now. Labelled a “future office”, PIXEL is a forward thinking sustainable approach to office buildings and is an answer for anticipating and adapting to change, rather than simply reacting.
