THE GAMES LEGACY Dalmarnock, Glasgow
In 2007 the news Glasgow would
host the Commonwealth games was met with celebration and the plan for a ‘new legacy’ met with optimism – especially by the residents of Dalmarnock, an area once defined by its prosperous industry but that now suffers from some of the highest levels of unemployment and deprivation. 8 years later, with most of the old shops, housing and community buildings reduced to dust, those who remain sit surrounded by swathes of tarmac, rapidly fading optimism and headlines such as ‘Glasgow faces up to reality of a divided Commonwealth Games legacy’. Clyde Gateway’s plans have seen much of the land
decontaminated, and new investment, infrastructure and housing come to the area. These developments exist as part of a plan that works at a regional and national scale – ensuring Glasgow remains to be seen as an internationally competitive city. However the developments represent a national level of disinterest and neglect for sense of place and diversity at a local and urban level – a level of disinterest that arises in part from mass culture and values. The effect of this disinterest in the urban and local takes on different extremes. In the case of Dalmarnock it has left behind a fragmented community.

The residents of Dalmarnock are breathing life into the void that currently severs the community. The symbolic notion of knitting old and new together comes to fruition here, quite literally, in the form of Urban gardens and farms. These are part of a wider

strategy, illustrated above, that attempts to increase the sustainability of the neighbourhood - not only reducing waste and the dependency on external sources but also, in the process, creating a positive identity that is shared by many.

THE CUNNIGAR LOOP
Dalmarnock Further Education College is soon to be completed to the west of the Athlete’s village. Located next to the river Clyde, it boasts a potential for outdoor learning and activities. This public college not only provides valuable skills for entering employment, but is also open to the community. The cafe, meeting rooms and creche will all available for use by the general public.
The state of the art college puts emphasis on professionalism and quality of work. The newly rejuvenated area north of the college provides a great source of learning about sustainability. Food and materials for the college will in part be supplied by produce from the allotments and shared recycling centre located just North of the site.
Inner City Adventure Forest
Due to open in Spring 2016, the Cuningar Loop, a flourishing centre of wildlife, ignored until now, will be transformed into an adventure land for all ages. Only 10 minutes from Glasgow city centre, the countryside comes to the city. The 15 hectare site includes a vast aray of new and exciting installations:
