Imaging Research as Architecture + Space

Form, Space + Order:

This project entailed investigation, analysis, and two- and three-dimensional representation of the abstract, formal, tectonic, and spatial characteristics of a select group of 20th Century and contemporary houses. Through research and analysis of one of these homes, it became just as paramount to study the important designer who imagined it. The completed research and analysis included an ongoing dialog of design ideas, leading to an understanding of ways in which theory and practice are related in the conceptualization and construction of exemplary architecture. The work for this project lead to a further understanding of the relationship between inside and outside, and how the local environment and site conditions influence design.

The Loblolly House was completed in 2006 after a short construction period of six weeks. All components of the house were prefabricated offsite and transported to Taylors Island, such as wall and ceiling cartridges which house all mechanical and electrical needs. The home is a total of 2,200 square feet, built for and by Philadelphia architect Stephen Kieran with help from his interior designer wife Barbra DeGrange. The home is located off of the Cheasapeak Bay, conviently close to the Philadelphia area making it the perfect vacation home. The home has smart shutters which can be opened and closed to trap heat in and a Nana Wall system which allows for savannah-like views of the Chesapeake Bay. These walls can be retracted and provide the entire interior with natural ventilation.

This project entailed students to create a critical multi-media architectural reflection of their house that through research and documentation reflects what I have grown to love and hate of its' design. By carefully considering the house I have been studying this project will answer: "What are the house's major design concepts? and What is most important to me?". Using the same concepts from the Loblolly house that I've explored in drawing form, we were to create a model that describes the intellectual, emotional, and sensual responses to colors, patterns and textures I found in the spirit of Mondo Materialis. We also were to express the tectonics, materiality and ordering system that underpins the design in the spirit of analytique

After I studied the Loblolly house I focused further on the materiality and function of its' design. I then created a set of three boxes made from aluminum studs and flat fasceners that fit inside on e another. This design choice was made to reflect the Loblolly's kit of parts design that conceptually engage like a set of Russian Matryoshka dolls.

Along with making a physical component to the project I used Abode Software to Render my two point perspective drawing further. I also painted a wooded scenery with water colors that reflected the tall loblolly pines that surround the house and drew a light yellow rectangle within them to represent the house's light environmental footprint amoungst the trees. Lastly, I added texture to my one pointperspective to bring the drawing to life.

In the final project of the semester I synthesized what I learned through my research and exploration in Projects 1 and 2. I then created a building of my own design which highlighted the brilliance of the Loblolly House and expresses my own personality. This building was designed for a real site, Thomas Jefferson East Falls Campus. I created carefully crafted drawings and models in which follow architectural conventions while utilizingmultiple medias.
