Investments will help youth in GTA get jobs The Government of Canada is providing support for youth in the Greater Toronto Area to help them gain the skills, knowledge and experience they need to enter and succeed in the job market. The announcement was made by Bernard Trottier, Member of Parliament for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, on behalf of Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. “Our government’s top priorities are creating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity,” said Trottier. “The Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy is helping youth develop the skills and gain the experience they need to get jobs now and prepare for the workforce of tomorrow.” JobStart is receiving over $509,000 from the Skills Link program to help youth overcome barriers to employment. Skills Link is part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES). Participants will develop their employability skills through workshops on topics such as computer skills, résumé preparation and job searching techniques. They will also gain

meaningful on-the-job experience in the highdemand construction, retail and automotive repair sectors. “JobStart is grateful for the funding granted by the Government of Canada that will significantly enhance our employment services for at risk youth in the Etobicoke area.” said Heather Sant, Executive Director of JobStart. “This project will help youth find work in the high demand sectors of automotive repair and maintenance, construction or retail or return to school to complete their high school education.” With an annual budget of more than $300 million, YES helps youth, particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career information, develop employment skills, find jobs and stay employed. Yorkdale Shopping Centre announces new expansion Yorkdale Shopping Centre, one of Canada’s leading shopping destinations, recently announced a new 298,000 square foot retail expansion that will be complete in the Fall of 2016. Construction of Yorkdale’s new retail expansion will begin in January 2014.

triOS College is excited to announce that it has received Accreditation Candidacy Status for its Physiotherapy Assistant/Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. Candidacy Status is a pre-requisite in the accreditation process authorized by the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program (OTA & PTA EAP). This status is only achieved when education programs meet the high standards set forth by the OTA & PTA EAP. Candidacy Status means that the triOS program is formally affiliated with the OTA & PTA EAP and will seek full accreditation. “It is such an achievement to be the first Private Career College in Ontario to gain Accreditation Candidacy Status for our program,” said Wendy Churchill, Director of Academic and Employment Services. “I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to our entire healthcare faculty – a team dedicated to excellence in education and helping our graduates succeed in the field,” Churchill added. The OTA & PTA Education Accreditation Program was established to promote and recognize quality educational programs and support the continued growth of the industry. Accreditation involves continuously working with the OTA & PTA EAP to ensure programs are fulfilling their commitment to educational quality. Achieving Accreditation Candidacy Status means that the PTA/OTA program at triOS College is on the right path to gaining full accreditation. To become accredited, a program must meet rigorous standards which ensure that the highest possible caliber of education equips students with the necessary skills to succeed in the field. Students of this program receive a 500-hour practicum placement, membership with the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA), an Anatomy lab workshop at the University of Guelph and canfitpro™ Personal Training Specialist certification.

The Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program (OTA & PTA EAP) is a joint initiative of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) and Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC). CAOT and PEAC are independently incorporated under federal law. The mission of the CAOT is to advance excellence in occupational therapy and it is the sole accrediting agency in Canada with the mandate for accreditation of occupational therapist educational programs. The mission of PEAC is to ensure the quality of physiotherapy education in Canada through accreditation. CAOT and PEAC are committed partners in the development and management of the OTA & PTA EAP.
