OTTAWA EDITION, JUNE 29–JULY 13, 2013

Job hunting tips for those who are over 50 years old way to lift your spirits, network with other professionals and maybe even learn of employment opportunities you won’t hear about on the couch at home. And volunteering, be it with a charity or a professional organization, is a great way to revive your resume and continue to add accomplishments despite your unemployment.

Though the job market has improved in recent years, many men and women are still out of work. Perhaps most troubling, many of those people are age 55 and older who are fearful of an uncertain future and a job market where they are seemingly overlooked. For many unemployed men and women over the age of 50, the harsh reality of a job market that does not value their experience or skill set is deeply disconcerting. But as difficult as the job market can be for older men and women, it’s not impossible to find a job, though it might take some ingenuity and perseverance.

EMPHASIZE YOUR AGE

THINK SMALL

Smaller companies wherein employees tend to wear many hats are more likely to value experience than a larger company. By the age of 50, many professionals have vast experience in a host of different positions, and that versatility is likely to appeal to a small company looking for employees who can multitask.

DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF

Those who were victimized by layoffs should expand their job searches to more than just their previous fields. While it’s definitely a good idea to maintain contacts in your old field and routinely look for openings

in that field, it’s also a good idea to examine your skill set and experience and find a new field where these things apply. Chances are your years of experience are transferable to many fields, and redirecting your job hunting efforts to a new line of work might yield opportunities you are not even aware existed.

be unfairly categorized as dinosaurs with no grasp of mobile technology or the latest software programs. But those applicants who can demonstrate their proficiency in the latest technologies, including mobile technologies like smartphones, tablets and social media, can put themselves above fellow applicants.

EMBRACE THE 21ST CENTURY

START WORKING

Many companies or organizations mistakenly assume that the digital age has passed older workers by. Workers in their 50s might

If you are mired in long-term unemployment and spend every day at home, get out and start working. Volunteering is a great

Many unemployed men and women over 50 tend to look at their age as a hindrance that is preventing them from finding gainful employment. But your age can be an advantage, as many organizations find older applicants are more reliable and need less time to adapt than younger applicants with less experience. When emphasizing your age as a positive, don’t focus on job titles, which many other unemployed men and women your age likely highlight on their resumes. Instead, focus on specific achievements and accomplishments and reduce the emphasis you place on job tasks. Achievements tend to stand out above titles, and men and women over 50 likely have achieved more than younger, less experienced applicants. Finding a job after the age of 50 isn’t easy. But taking a broad approach and emphasizing as opposed to downplaying your experience might help you stand out among a crowded pool of applicants. ●

Language use in the workplace

2011 National Household Survey: Portrait of Canada’s labour force Close to 99 per cent of Canadian workers reported using English, French or both in the workplace most often or on a regular basis. Specifically, 84.7 per cent of the population used English and 25.3 per cent used French. In 2011, 93.9 per cent of the population in Quebec reported using French at work, while 39.2 per cent reported using English. In all the other provinces and territories, English was

the dominant language in the workplace. In 2011, 98.4 per cent of the population reported using this language, and 4.6 per cent of the population reported French as the language used at work. Among all languages other than English or French used in the workplace, the family of Chinese languages, with 224,000 references, ranked first in 2011.

“Specifically, 84.7 per cent of the population used English and 25.3 per cent used French.” In 2011, 2.65 million individuals (13.9 per cent) reported using more than one language at work. Of all the country’s CMAs,

the Quebec part of the Ottawa–Gatineau CMA had the highest proportion of workers who reported using at least two languages in the workplace (58.4 per cent), followed by the CMAs of Montréal (47.5 per cent), Moncton (36.7 per cent), Sherbrooke (28.7 per cent), Ottawa–Gatineau [Ontario part] (27.9 per cent) and Greater Sudbury (23.2 per cent). ●

OTTAWA EDITION, JUNE 29–JULY 13, 2013

Manpower says hiring pace to slow in Canada Canadian employers expect a moderate hiring climate for the third quarter of 2013, with employers in the Transportation & Public Utilities sector reporting the strongest 3Q job prospects, according to the latest results of the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, the most extensive, forward-looking employment survey in the world.

“The survey of over 1,900 Canadian employers reveals that 21 per cent of them plan to increase their payrolls in the third quarter of 2013.” With seasonal variations removed from the data, the Net Employment Outlook of nine per cent is a slight drop when compared to the Outlook reported in the previous quarter. This Outlook is also a three percentage point drop from the Outlook reported during the same time last year. However, results for the third quarter do represent some encouraging signs. The survey of over 1,900 Canadian employers reveals that 21 per cent of them plan to increase their payrolls in the third quarter of 2013, while six per cent anticipate cutbacks. Of those surveyed, 71 per cent of employers expect to maintain their current staffing levels and two per cent are unsure. Job seekers in Western and Atlantic Canada are likely to benefit from a steady hiring climate from July through September, while they can

still expect some opportunities in Ontario and Quebec. Although some regional Outlooks are experiencing slight decreases compared to the previous quarter, job seekers will likely continue to find prospects in the labour market as employers throughout Canada expect the hiring pace will be moderate through the summer. “Overall, a moderate national hiring climate is projected in the coming quarter,” said Byrne Luft, Vice President of Operations for Manpower Canada. “While most industries are expected to see little change over the previous quarter, employers in the Transportation & Public Utilities and Construction sectors anticipate the strongest gains, especially in Western Canada. This is due in part to continued government infrastructure spending, in accordance with Canada’s Economic Action Plan 2013.”

MODERATE REGIONAL HIRING INTENTIONS

Survey results this quarter show that job seekers across Canada are expected to see various amounts of positive hiring activity. Employers in Western Canada project the most respectable hiring climate for the coming quarter, reporting a Net Employment Outlook of 14 per cent. Employers in Atlantic Canada expect a favourable hiring pace with an Outlook of 12 per cent, employers in Ontario project an Outlook of nine per cent and Quebec employers anticipate a modest climate for job seekers, reporting an Outlook of seven per cent. ●
