GREATER TORONTO EDITION, JULY 6–13, 2013
Canada’s labour force: a portrait 2011 National Household Survey reveals retail salesperson top career choice for men and women New data from the National Household Survey (NHS) show that Canada had almost 18 million labour force participants aged 15 years and over in 2011, of which 16.6 million were employed. The employment rate was 60.9 per cent. In comparison, at the time of the 2006 Census, the employment rate was 62.6 per cent.
RETAIL TRADE SECTOR HAD THE HIGHEST SHARE OF TOTAL EMPLOYMENT:
The three industrial sectors with the largest employment shares in 2011 were retail trade, health and social assistance and manufacturing. In 2011, the retail trade sector ranked first among all sectors in terms of its share of total employment with 11.5 per cent. This was followed closely by health care and social assistance with 11.4 per cent. The manufacturing sector had the third highest share with 9.2 per cent of total employment.
MOST COMMON OCCUPATIONS FOR WOMEN AND MEN:
In 2011, women comprised just under half of the employed labour force (48.0 per cent). Among the 500 detailed occupations within the NHS, the most common occupation for women was ‘retail salesperson,’ accounting for 4.7 per cent of all employed women. This was followed by ‘administrative assistant’ (4.0 per cent), ‘registered nurse and registered psychiatric nurse’ (3.4 per cent), ‘cashier’ (3.3 per cent) and ‘elementary school and kindergarten teacher’ (2.9 per cent).
(23.3 per cent), Montréal (22.2 per cent), Ottawa–Gatineau (20.1 per cent) and Vancouver (19.7 per cent).
For men, the most common occupation was ‘retail salesperson,’ accounting for 3.3 per cent of all employed men, followed by ‘transport truck driver’ (2.9 per cent), ‘retail trade manager’ (2.5 per cent), ‘carpenter’ (1.7 per cent) and ‘janitor, caretaker and building superintendent’ (1.7 per cent).
LONGEST COMMUTING TIMES IN TORONTO, OSHAWA, MONTRÉAL:
EMPLOYMENT RATE INCREASES WITH EDUCATION LEVEL:
In 2011, the employment rate for the population aged 25 to 64 was 75.3 per cent. In general, the employment rate increases with education level. The employment rate for those with university credentials was 81.6 per cent, compared with 55.8 per cent for those who had no certificate, diploma or degree.
ALMOST ONE IN FIVE WORKERS WAS AGED 55 YEARS AND OVER:
According to the 2011 NHS, workers aged 55 and over accounted for 18.7 per cent of total employment compared with 15.5 per cent in the 2006 Census. This was the result of the aging of the baby boom generation and the increased participation of older workers in the labour force. In 2011, just over 3 million people aged 55 and over were employed. The employment rate for this age group was 34.9 per cent compared with 32.2 per cent in the 2006 Census.
ALMOST THREE OUT OF FOUR COMMUTERS DROVE TO WORK:
According to the 2011 NHS, 15.4 million people in the employed labour force or 92.7 per cent of them commuted to work, while
1.1 million worked at home most of the time. Of those who commuted to work, the predominant mode of transportation was driving. In 2011, 74.0 per cent of commuters, or 11.4 million workers, drove a car, truck or van. Another 5.6 per cent, or 867,100 people, commuted to work as passengers. In 2011, 12.0 per cent of commuters or 1.8 million workers used public transit, compared with 11.0 per cent of commuters or 1.6 million workers in the 2006 Census. In addition, 5.7 per cent of commuters walked to work, while 1.3 per cent cycled. Commuting to work varied between CMAs in 2011. The CMAs with the highest proportions of public transit users were Toronto
Commuters spent an average of 25.4 minutes travelling to work in 2011. Commuters who travelled by public transit (42.9 minutes) took longer to get to work, on average, than commuters who used cars (23.7 minutes). Public transit commute times include the time required to walk to the bus stop, subway or train station, as well as wait times. The average commuting time was longest in the CMAs of Toronto (32.8 minutes), Oshawa, (31.8 minutes) and Montréal (29.7 minutes). For some commuters, the time it takes to get to work was longer. In 2011, 17.2 per cent of commuters, or 2.6 million workers, took 45 minutes or more on average to get to work. Commuters who lived in the area surrounding and within the Toronto CMA were the most likely to be in this group, with 29.9 per cent of commuters in Oshawa, 28.4 per cent of those in Toronto and 26.6 per cent of those in Barrie taking 45 minutes or more to get to work.
HIGHEST EMPLOYMENT RATES IN THE NORTH AND WEST:
In 2011, Yukon and Alberta had the highest employment rates in Canada at 69.7 per cent and 69.0 per cent respectively. The lowest employment rates were observed in Newfoundland and Labrador (50.7 per cent) and in Nunavut (52.1 per cent). ●

Tunnel boring begins on the Eglinton Crosstown Ontario is moving forward with the construction of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT – the province’s largest public transit construction project in more than half a century – to help ease congestion and create thousands of jobs. “Our government is moving forward with the largest transit investment in a generation to get the region moving,” said Minister of Transportation and Minister of Infrastructure Glen Murray. “The new Eglinton Crosstown LRT line will get commuters to work, school and play faster than ever before — up to 60 per cent faster than today.”
The first pair of tunnel boring machines, named Dennis and Lea, will start digging the underground portion of the line eastward from Black Creek Drive. The second pair of tunnel boring machines, Don and Humber, will dig from just west of Leslie Street heading west toward Yonge and Eglinton. The machines will bore a little more than 10 kilometres of LRT tunnel at a rate of approximately 10 to 15 metres a day. The new LRT line will run about 19 kilometres along Eglinton Avenue and will include up to 25 stations. More than 10 kilometres, from approximately Keele Street to Laird Avenue, will be underground.
“The Eglinton Crosstown will link to 54 local bus routes, three TTC interchange subway stations, and GO Transit, providing customers with a fast, reliable, and seamless transit experience,” said President and CEO of Metrolinx Bruce McCuaig. “The Crosstown is an example of The Big Move in action and a project that will help transform the region’s transportation system by expanding the regional transit network.” Investing in public transit is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to help reduce gridlock, strengthen communities and create jobs.
QUICK FACTS
• In November 2012, Metrolinx held an online contest to select names for the four tunnel boring machines needed to dig the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line. Dennis and Lea represent the neighbourhoods of Mount Dennis and Leaside, and Don and Humber represent the Don and Humber Rivers. • The Eglinton Crosstown LRT is expected to be in service by 2020 and will create thousands of jobs. • Since 2003, Ontario has invested more than $16.1 billion in public transit in Ontario, including $7.7 billion in GO Transit. ●

Canadian video game industry contributes $2.3 billion to GDP
In a keynote address at the Ottawa International Game Conference (OIGC), Jayson Hilchie, President & CEO of the Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESAC) recently unveiled new research about the Canadian video game industry. The research shows that Canada’s overall video game industry is still growing at a moderate pace, even as the sector and its business models continue to evolve. “This industry – with its marriage of highskill creative, artistic and technical disciplines – is a source of national pride,” said Hilchie. “Many people are still surprised to realize that Canada is the largest producer of video games on a per capita basis, producing critically acclaimed video games on nearly all platforms and enjoyed all over the world.” Unveiling top-line results from new research conducted by Nordicity for ESAC, Hilchie showed that Canada’s 329 video game studios are a critical component of this country’s new digital economy generating over $2.3 billion in GDP for the Canadian economy in 2012. “There are 16,500 men and women working full time in Canada’s video game industry – up 5 per cent from where we were in 2011,” reported Hilchie. “But our industry is responsible for generating employment for approximately 27,000 people across the Canadian economy. These are high paying jobs – paying on average just over $72,000 – going to young workers in creative/artistic disciplines, technical fields and business/administrative functions,” said Hilchie. The average age of workers in the Canadian
video game industry is just over 30 years old. “Video game developers and publishers have a positive outlook on the future. Four out of 10 respondents expect to grow by over 25 per cent in the next 24 months, while 17 per cent expect to grow by 15-24 per cent in the same period,” said Hilchie. “Although there have been studio closures and shifts in the types of games produced here, there is an optimism about the future of the industry in Canada.” Over 84 per cent of Canadian video game studios are now working on games for mobile devices (phones and tablets), while just over 48 per cent of studios are devoting some of their resources to console games. Studios in Canada are also developing PC games (66 per cent) as well as games for the Web (46 per cent) and for social networks (29 per cent). Although the overall Canadian industry is shifting more of its attention to mobile or casual titles, bigger-budget console games are still receiving the lion’s share of resources. Companies report that the average budget for console games is $8.7 million, produced by an average team of 65 persons in 583 days, as compared to an average budget of $300,000 for mobile games, a team of 7 persons and 156 days of production. Canada’s video game industry continues to develop some of the world’s biggest blockbusters including franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Batman Arkham, NHL and FIFA. ESAC partnered with Nordicity to conduct one of the most comprehensive surveys of the Canadian video game industry. ●
