GREATER TORONTO EDITION, JUNE 29–JULY 6, 2013
Study: depression at work Job insecurity, work/life balance are key components of mental health issues in the workplace Job insecurity, abusive supervision, excessive demands, the encroachment of work on family life and domestic relationship problems top the list of factors that contribute to the development of mental health issues among workers. These findings, disclosed recently, are the results of the largest research study ever conducted on the subject in Canada. The study was undertaken by researchers at the Université de Montréal, Concordia University and Université Laval with the support of Standard Life. Researchers focused on a series of factors that may lead to the development of psychological distress, depression and burnout at work. More than 2,100 employees at 63 companies were interviewed about their personal and professional lives. The results of this questionnaire were supported by cortisol measurements. This research methodology is a first in the field of study of mental health factors in the workplace. Cortisol is a hormone found in saliva and recognized as an indicator of an individual’s stress level. The researchers responsible for the study, professors Alain Marchand and Pierre Durand of the Université de Montréal’s School of Industrial Relations, are convinced the impacts of an individual’s personal and workrelated problems on his or her mental health cannot be considered separately. Professor Durand explains: “The strength of this research is that it takes a large number of fac-
tors into account. These include work organization, family and employment relationships and certain personality traits, such as selfesteem, as well as other potential risk factors, like chronic illness or alcohol misuse.” The study also provided an opportunity to review approximately 65 corporate practices designed to reduce stress and improve employee health. These practices range from operating a company fitness centre to
implementing shorter working hours. “The good news is that we know it is possible to introduce effective measures to reduce mental health risks,” says Eric Pfeiffer, Senior Consultant, Health and Wellness, at Standard Life. “The results of this study will provide our customers with additional motivation to adopt an integrated prevention approach tailored to their specific business needs.”
The study was funded in part by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé, and conducted over a period of more than 4 years with 2,162 workers from all sectors. Saliva samples to determine cortisol levels were taken from 401 workers and compared to questionnaire results. The saliva samples were taken at five different times of the day on three separate occasions (on two workdays and on one day off). The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that approximately 1 out of 5 employees (21.4 per cent of Canada’s working population) suffers from a mental illness that potentially affects his or her productivity at work. Lost productivity related to absenteeism, presenteeism (when a worker is physically present but unproductive) and turnover costs Canadian companies $6.3 billion each year. The Standard Life Assurance Company of Canada (“Standard Life”) provides long-term savings, investments and insurance solutions to more than 1.4 million Canadians, including group retirement and insurance plan members. Standard Life promotes a comprehensive approach to health and wellness in the workplace. As part of its group insurance offering, it provides support to employers who wish to develop health and wellness strategies, design and implement customized programs, and analyze results. Standard Life strives to help its corporate clients improve financial results by integrating health and wellness with drug and absence management programs. ●

Legislation is proposed to increase recycling, create jobs Ontario is proposing legislation that, if passed, would require producers to take responsibility for recycling the products they sell. “We want an Ontario where waste becomes worth in the form of a cleaner environment, new investment, new recycling factories, new jobs and new Ontario-made products,” said Minister of the Environment Jim Bradley. “Our proposed legislation can help get us there.” The proposed Waste Reduction Act would encourage producers to turn more waste into new products, and in doing so generate new investment and create jobs. Ontario’s proposed Waste Reduction Strategy, also re-
leased today for public and stakeholder feedback, sets out a blueprint and timeline for how and when the proposed act would be implemented. The proposed Waste Reduction Act and strategy would: • Boost recycling in the industrial, commercial and institutional sector, starting with paper and packaging waste. • Protect consumers from surprise ecofees by making sure that recycling costs are included in the advertised price of a product. This move will also incent companies to look for ways to make their re-
cycling processes more economical and stay competitive. • Improve oversight and accountability of waste diversion by clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of individual producers, the provincial government, municipalities and a new Waste Reduction Authority. • Allow for greater producer funding of the Blue Box program, easing the financial burden on municipal property taxpayers. • Foster innovation in product and packaging design. Recycling more waste is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to create jobs and
build a stronger, greener economy for future generations.
QUICK FACTS
• Recycling generates ten times more jobs than disposal. • Every additional 1,000 tonnes of recycled waste generates seven new jobs. • About 60 per cent of Ontario’s waste is produced by industries, businesses and institutions such as shopping malls, hospitals and offices, but only 13 per cent of it is recycled. • About 12 million tonnes of waste is generated in Ontario every year. ●

The more business acquaintances you have, the merrier you might be. But the quality of those contacts has a bigger impact on your career success, a new Robert Half Technology survey of information technology (IT) professionals suggests. Sixty-three percent of IT workers polled recently rated the quality of their professional network as “very important” to their overall career success, compared to 46 percent who felt the same way about the size of their network. When it comes to making new connections, (44 percent) of IT professionals surveyed prefer to network online and 22 percent favor doing it in person. “Knowing someone professionally and being willing to go to bat for that person are two different things,” said John Reed, senior executive director of Robert Half Technology. “You may have hundreds of LinkedIn connections, but if the relationships are superficial, your contacts may not be very helpful when you’re seeking professional advice or assistance with a job search.” Reed added, “Quality connections take time to establish, but they are a valuable career safety net, whether someone is just starting out or has many years of experience.” Robert Half Technology provides five pitfalls to avoid when networking:
LOSING TOUCH
Keep the lines of communication open by offering a note of congratulations to a contact who was recently promoted or asking to meet for lunch. Set aside time each week for these types of networking activities.
For Success! EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE RECIPIENTS can possibly get funding for training and get a new professional job afterwards.

FORGETTING YOUR P’S AND Q’S
A little gratitude can go a long way toward maintaining positive relationships. Always show appreciation to those who act on your behalf, even if their efforts don’t result in the desired outcome.
TAKING A GENERALIST APPROACH
Instead of sending a mass email to everyone in your network asking for assistance, try customized, targeted messages to specific contacts.
FAILING TO RETURN THE FAVOUR
Networking is a two-way street: Look for opportunities to help your contacts whenever possible, and you’ll find that others are happy to do the same for you. The survey was developed by Robert Half Technology, a leading provider of information technology (IT) professionals on a project and full-time basis. The responses are from over 7,500 IT workers to a Web survey conducted by Robert Half Technology in early 2013. ●

ADVERTORIAL
Looking forward, learning more Whether a recent high-school graduate, looking to enter a greater professional field, a new immigrant building your life in Canada, or moving forward to sharpen your current skill set – whatever your reason, a decision to begin post-secondary studies can be an all encompassing one! There’s a lot to consider as individuals take their first, advancing steps: what to study, where to go, who to turn too, funding options and what happens after – what supports are available? For BizTech College and their stakeholders, this is the bottom line: comprehensive training that propels individuals into meaningful, productive and lasting careers. As an established academic facility within the busy career education landscape, BizTech College was born out of what they personally know is important to adult students and their families. BizTech’s mandate was built out of their personal frustrations surrounding thorough and accessible education with reliable career supports; people need qualified, affordable learning, leveraged with committed follow-up to successfully compete in the growing labour market. This is what they do. Coming into BizTech College, prospective students begin with a personal consult; advisors first learn about client interests and experiences as a vital aspect of who they are – their skills and aptitudes. From there, they focus on where individuals would like to see themselves go, how their present skills may assist vocational positioning and how BizTech College’s accommodating finance options can put post-secondary education conveniently within reach. People are often surprised to dis-

Within the career college marketplace prospective clients need to examine carefully what a school offers – its program modules, academic standards, seasoned instructors, course delivery and classroom facilitation, with modern labs and foremost after graduate care. Biztech College Administrator, Poonam Narula, makes no apology for its high academic benchmarks set as part of BizTech’s service accountability, “Our comprehensive curriculums, demanding attendance and high passing average, ensures greater employment readiness for each graduate as they enter professional life.” For anyone wondering about their next career step, BizTech College views the larger labour horizon and stays current in education developments, like the federal government’s new post-secondary education and training initiatives, as part of its continuing Economic Action Plan.
