OTTAWA EDITION, JUNE 15–29, 2013

Let’s talk about it

Mental health in the workplace is a $51 billion elephant in the boardroom Employers can no longer afford to ignore mental health at work; it’s the elephant in the boardroom that is costing Canadian employers and the economy $51 billion dollars a year. It’s also keeping employees from reaching their full potential as they suffer the immeasurable costs of stigma and lack of support associated with mental illness.

“...nearly half of working Canadians agree that work and place of work is the most stressful part of their lives. ” Today, half a million Canadians missed work because of mental health issues according to Government of Canada, “The Human Face of Mental Health and Mental Illness in Canada”, 2006. According to a recent study conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Partners for Mental Health, nearly half of working Canadians agree that work and place of work is the most stressful part of their lives. The survey also revealed that 16 per cent of Canadians feel that work is a frequent or ongoing source of feelings of depression, anxiety or other mental health symptoms. Yet, these employees are often keeping these feelings and issues secret rather than confiding in their employers, colleagues or friends due to the possibility of stigma, discrimination and lack of support in the workplace. In fact, the same Ispos Reid study indicated

that two in three Canadians would not have an open discussion with their boss about their mental illness.

“The detrimental effects of unmanaged mental illness in the workplace – from the impact on the individual, to loss of

productivity, and to increased disability claims – confirms the critical need for businesses and individuals to take action when it comes to mental health” says Jeff Moat, President, Partners for Mental Health. “Even though 44 per cent of workers say they have or have had mental health issues, people are still not talking openly about it in the workplace. This has to change for the sake of business and the long-term health of all employees.” In order to help drive change, the Not Myself Today campaign launched on May 9 coinciding with Mental Health Week in Canada. This campaign is designed to educate and engage Canadians on the issues of mental health in the workplace. It encourages businesses to step-up and invest in mentally healthy workplaces. A key component of the program involves participating in a Not Myself Day @ Work whereby businesses shine a spotlight on workplace mental health and engage individuals in meaningful ways to facilitate improvement. The national charitable organization, Partners for Mental Health is leading the initiative as part of their mandate to transform the way Canadians think about and support mental health. For more information on how to get involved and learn more, please visit www. notmyselftoday.com or call/email Partners for Mental Health at 613-798-5862 or partners@partnersformh.ca. ●

Ontario gains a whopping 50,600 jobs in May The Ontario government’s focus on creating jobs and growing our economy continues to get results. In May, the province gained 50,600 jobs. Youth employment rose by 20,200 jobs. The number of jobs in Ontario has increased 452,500 net jobs from a low in June 2009, with full-time employment up 477,500. This means Ontario has recovered all the jobs lost during the recession and continues to outpace the United States and Great Lakes region in job creation since 2009.

QUICK FACTS

“This means Ontario has recovered all the jobs lost during the recession...” Ontario is focused on providing the right climate to attract investment and build a strong, innovative economy that can provide jobs, opportunities and prosperity for all.

• The government’s new Youth Jobs Strategy would help create job opportunities for about 30,000 youth, while promoting entrepreneurship and innovation. • In 2012, Ontario ranked third in North America for the number of foreign direct investment projects. • Ontario is on track to eliminate the deficit by 2017–18. The province is the only government in Canada to beat its fiscal

targets for the fourth year in a row. “Our government is focused on creating jobs and growing Ontario’s economy, and we’re getting results,” said Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment Dr. Eric Hoskins. “The increase in jobs during the month of May demonstrates that we are on track to building a strong, innovative economy that provides opportunities, jobs and prosperity for all Ontarians.” ●

ADVERTORIAL

Canadian Property Stars a great work opportunity Accelerated company growth is due to hard working student employees

Ben Stewart, Owner and CEO of Canadian Property Stars (CPS) has created the perfect seasonal job for hard working and motivated students. Based in Ottawa, and operating in 12 corporate locations across Canada, the company’s growth can be attributed to Stewart’s sensitivity to the student worker. “I was only 17 years old myself when I realized there was a market for selling property maintenance services directly to homeowners,” says Stewart. “Back then the only thing preventing my friends and I from working was school. To grow my business I needed to recruit people who shared my vision, and I found each year I needed to be more flexible with my business model in order to make my company, as an employment option, attractive to the best help out there. Student workers have a very short window of time each Spring and Summer to work and play and save money for their tuition. Our company operates during this window and we allow workers to choose the days they want to work so they can work on the same days as their friends, and schedule their work around Summer events they don’t want to miss. We recruit on their campuses and in their high schools, and hold job fairs and training sessions in the months leading up to the end of the school term. We offer shuttle rides from campuses to our work locations. We have worked hard to make our jobs the ideal student job – fun, flexible and lucrative for those who work hard.” Aside from fine-tuning the annual recruitment process, Stewart has created a work atmosphere and a company culture based on the values of hard work, sound ethics and healthy competition. As a direct seller of sought after residential property maintenance services, the workers at CPS compete for daily cash bonuses, as well as other prizes and individual and team incentives. At the end of each service season, the top salespeople from each location compete against each other for the honour of “All Star Champions” status. All Star week promotes camaraderie across the company, and allows young workers to see the possibility of starting a career with the company when they finish their schooling. An active Facebook Group page has allowed workers in British Columbia and Alberta to see how co-workers in Ontario are doing, and to motivate and humour each other with their tales of extreme weather and nice lunches given to them by friendly home-

owners. Recently an alumni website was set up to honour some of the student worker “legends” that have come and gone over the years at propertystarshalloffame.com. Few people know that Canadian Property Stars is a family run business, with Stewart working alongside two of his siblings, his wife, his brother in law and his dearest childhood friends. Said Stewart, “I learned early in business that there’s a direct correlation between the people you work with, and your success outcomes. You need to be able to trust and rely on the people you work with. And without trust, it’s hard to delegate!” With a management team of over 70 people, Stewart infuses fun and team building and competitiveness amongst everyone. Though managers usually rise in the ranks from workers, Stewart is always looking for new managers who are energetic, hard working and good at motivating young workers. In 2012 several company managers led a fundraising campaign in the company’s “offseason” which raised over $30,000 for Habitat for Humanity Canada, and over 25,000 new toys which were later donated to various Canadian toy drives. Because the employeeled fundraising initiative was so successful in its first year, Stewart can now offer his management team year round work, should that be their preference. More information at www.charityfundraisingevents.com. “People don’t usually think of seasonal property maintenance work as a full time career, but we are now at a point where not only can we offer flexible work to over 800 student workers across the country, but we can offer our managers year round work, or their Fall and Winter off! We are attracting great staff – and keeping them!” And Stewart himself is attracting attention in Canadian business circles as well. He was recently named a recipient of the “Forty Under Forty” award by The Ottawa Business Journal, awarded annually to individuals who exemplify leadership, entrepreneurship and community building in the work that they do. Helping people start and grow businesses Ontario government boosting support for entrepreneurs and creating jobs Ontario is making it easier for people to start and grow successful businesses by streamlining and improving its business support services. “Our government understands that entrepreneurs are a key part of Ontario’s economic future,” said Minister of Research and Innovation Reza Moridi. “That’s why we want to foster a culture of entrepreneurship that will equip people with mentors and other key supports to get their dreams off the ground.” The new Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs is a one-stop shop for anyone involved in planning, launching or building a company – whether it’s a main street retailer, a hightech start-up, or a growing manufacturer. The network’s new website will connect entrepreneurs across the province to advisors in their communities, who can help with everything from writing a business plan to developing a strategy to export products. Experts can also help researchers and high-tech entrepreneurs bring their discoveries to market, launch new companies and create jobs. “MaRS and the Investment Accelerator Fund have been instrumental in helping Gridcentric unlock the power of its incredible technology,” said CEO of Gridcentric, Inc. Eric Shefler. “From day one, they’ve

helped match Gridcentric’s innovation with the research support, advisory services and connections to capital and talent necessary to help turn Gridcentric from a University of Toronto research project into a thriving software company with enormous potential.” The Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs is part of the new government’s plan to help innovators succeed and build a prosperous and fair province.

QUICK FACTS

• Since 2007, Ontario’s three advisory networks helped launch and grow close to 72,500 companies, and helped create or retain almost 200,000 jobs. • The new network will give entrepreneurs access to business advisors, strategists and market analysts in 86 offices across Ontario. • Ontario has invested $3.6 billion in research and innovation across the province since 2003. • The 2013 Ontario Budget proposes to establish a Youth Jobs Strategy of $295 million over two years to create jobs and mentorship opportunities for about 30,000 youth and promote entrepreneurship and innovation. • The government is holding consultations on the Youth Jobs Strategy across the province throughout May. ●
