GREATER TORONTO EDITION, JULY 27–AUGUST 3, 2013

Younger and older workers up against similar struggles Findings from Randstad’s latest Global Workmonitor, surveying employees in 32 countries around the world, reveal that most Canadians believe it is harder for both younger and older workers to find a suitable job. When asked to rate their agreement on the statement “I believe it is hard for young people (aged 25 or younger) to find suitable job,” 86 per cent of respondents agreed or agreed strongly. Similarly to the statement “I believe it is hard for older people (aged 55 or older) to find a suitable job,” 89 per cent of the respondents agreed or strongly agree, with only 2 per cent of respondents strongly disagreeing. The same question asked in the United States saw less pessimism when it came to young people, with only 64 per cent of respondents agreeing with the statement. While for older workers agreement was similar with 87 per cent. Paired with these numbers the respondents felt that both younger and older workers would be willing to accept work below their education levels – with 86 per cent agreeing that younger works would do so, and 77 per cent agreeing that older workers would too. In the US, these figures are even more in the affirmative, with 90 per cent of respondents agreeing that young people would accept such work, and 83 per cent for older workers.

“In an increasingly competitive market, companies may be hesitant to make the larger investments in more experienced workers; or smaller investments in those who are untested. But as the labour market faces impending skills shortages, companies need to invest in training the new generation of workers to replace those skilled workers that will soon leave. They also need experienced workers who can act as mentors and help facilitate the integration of young employees,” says Jan

Hein Bax, President, Randstad Canada. While people believe it is hard for both young and old people to find suitable jobs, they also think organizations should hire younger and older talent. Seventy-eight per cent of those Canadians asked think it is good for their company to actively recruit young people, while 66 per cent think it is good to recruit older people. And there could be good news on the horizon for both age groups, as the last Statistics Canada Labour Force study

for May 2013 indicated a rise in employment in both the under 25s and over 55s. “As shown in the results of the Workmonitor survey, workers are embracing a more diversified workforce and are seeing the benefits of building a workplace with multiple generations. Older workers bring stability and a deep knowledge of their field, which can be instrumental in critical decision making. On the other hand, younger workers easily adapt to change and have a fresh outlook on the latest technology and industry trends that can lead to innovation in processes and product development. Organizations definitely benefit from both the invaluable experience of older workers and the creative thinking of the younger workforce,” adds Bax. The Randstad Workmonitor was launched in 2003, and now covers 32 countries around the world. The Randstad Workmonitor is published four times a year, making both local and global trends in mobility regularly visible over time. The quantitative study is conducted via an online questionnaire among a population aged 18-65, working a minimum of 24 hours a week in a paid job (not self-employed). The minimal sample size is 400 interviews per country. The 2nd wave of 2013 was conducted between 18 April and 3 May 2013. ●

Upswing in demand provides lift for aerospace industry Demand for new aircraft appears to be on the rise, which will provide a boost to Canadian production over the next four years, according to The Conference Board of Canada’s Industrial Outlook: Canada’s Aerospace Industry—Spring 2013. “Demand has been soft for years, due to the uncertainty in the world economy. But the new-order books are starting to look better, partially the result of rising orders for the CSeries, Bombardier’s upcoming aircraft, and renewed strength in the demand for high-end business jets,” said Maxim Armstrong, Senior Economist. “It will take years for the industry

to fully benefit, but production is beginning to accelerate.”

HIGHLIGHTS

• The modest pace of global economic activity has limited demand for air cargo or passenger services. Furthermore, the inventory for used aircraft remains high, which weakens demand for new production. • A few large orders last year and accumulating orders for Bombardier’s CSeries have improved the Canadian industry’s order book. However, most orders are spread

over a long period of time, so the short-term impact is small. • High oil prices can help aerospace manufacturers promote new, more fuel-efficient aircraft. But low oil prices can reduce pressure on buyers to renew their fleets. As of April, the industry’s backlog of orders had reached $38.5 billion, surpassing its pre-recession peak. However, these orders will have a modest effect on overall production in the short term. Annual production is not expected to increase until next year, and the industry will not exceed its 2008 production levels before 2017.

Industry revenues can be very volatile depending on when aircraft are shipped and the industry’s recent performance is no exception. Despite the improving order book, sales actually dropped 0.5 per cent in 2012 as shipments fell in the closing months of the year. Sales declined again in the first few months of this year. As a result of the weak start to the year, 2013 will see a second consecutive year of declining revenues. However, sales will begin to improve in 2014, as the CSeries moves into production and deliveries of other aircraft accelerate. ●

Improving transit, creating 1,200 jobs

Ontario is on track to begin construction of the Union Pearson Express station at Union Station this August, ensuring train service to and from Pearson International Airport in time for the 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games.

“Construction of the entire Union Pearson Express system is creating and supporting more than 1,200 jobs.” “I’m pleased that we’re on track to build the Union Pearson Express in time for the 2015 Pan/ParaPan American Games,” said Minister of Transportation and Minister of Infrastructure Glen Murray. “The Union Pearson Express will provide high-quality service that will transform the way we travel to and from the airport, removing an estimated 1.2 million car trips from Ontario roads in its first year of operation alone.” The new station will be located in the Skywalk immediately west of the Union Station train shed, connecting travellers to the busiest transportation hub in the country while seamlessly integrating with GO Transit, TTC and VIA services already available at Union Station. Travel time between Union Station and Pearson International Airport will be about 25 minutes, with trains departing every 15 min-

utes and stopping at the Bloor and Weston GO Stations. Investing in public transit is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to help reduce congestion, strengthen the economy and create jobs.

QUICK FACTS

• Work already underway includes building a station at Terminal 1, constructing a threekilometre rail line that will connect the new station at Terminal 1 to Union Station, upgrading and improving Bloor and Weston GO stations, expanding the rail line and manufacturing the vehicles. • Construction of the entire Union Pearson Express system is creating and supporting more than 1,200 jobs. • More than five million people travel between downtown Toronto and Pearson International Airport each year and that number is expected to reach nine million by 2020. • Metrolinx will own and operate the Union Pearson Express. Eighteen Tier 4 clean diesel vehicles have been purchased from Sumitomo Corporation of America. These vehicles are 75 per cent cleaner than standard diesel trains and will be convertible to electric propulsion. • Since 2003, Ontario has invested more than $16.1 billion in public transit in Ontario, including $7.7 billion in GO Transit. ●
