‘Recruiting talent; Developing skills’ South Lakeland District Council is an Equal Opportunities Employer
Young entrepreneurs do battle for social enter-prize Two schools shared the honours in a Dragon’s Den-style competition for enterprising pupils from across Cumbria. On Friday (28 June) Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service’s headquarters in Penrith played host to the Cumbria final of the 2013 Giving Nation Challenge. The final saw five secondary schools battle it out by pitching their social enterprise business ideas in front of two judges – Cumbria County Council’s Enterprise Education Officer Julia Winder and Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership’s Rob Randell. The scheme in Cumbria, where the teams’ challenge was to identify a need within their local community and set up a social enterprise to meet that need, is run in partnership between the Citizenship Foundation, Cumbria County Council’s Children’s Services and Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership. Despite all five schools delivering impressive pitches, Queen Katherine School in Kendal and Keswick School were named joint winners. Queen Katherine’s team of three year 10 pupils came up with the idea of producing and selling hand-made bracelets to buy long-life food for a foodbank in Kendal. Keswick School’s team of six year eight students made t-shirts and bracelets that are being sold in local shops in Keswick and Cockermouth. So far the initiative has made more than £200 profit, some of which has been reinvested into the social enterprise. A contribution will also be made to Eden Valley Hospice from the profits. Queen Katherine team member Lolita Walker, said: “It was great to be named winners and we’ve learned a lot about friendship, teamwork and business from taking part. As a result of this challenge I now understand what a social enterprise is.” Keswick School’s Anna Shenton said: “We learned business skills, teamwork skills, self-confidence, creative skills, marketing skills and presentation skills. “This project has given me a feel for the kind of tasks I might be expected to do in the world of work and has given us responsibility and confidence.” The other three schools at the Penrith final and their business ideas are as follows: Sandgate School, Kendal Pupils are painting and sanding furniture to sell at Right2Work – a social enterprise that provides training and employment opportunities for disabled and disadvantage people in South Lakeland. West Lakes Academy, Egremont The group of year eight pupils identified that their local community could be more disabled-friendly so they’re creating a DVD to sell to shopkeepers to teach them basic sign language and advice for how to better cater for the needs of disabled customers. Ullswater Community College, Penrith Pupils came up with an initiative called ‘the Spectrum Club’ – a youth club type facility in Penrith where young people, particularly the disabled or those with learning difficulties can meet up, play games, relax and socialise. To help them through the process of coming up with and delivering their projects, a number of schools chose to work with local business mentors. Julia Winder, Cumbria County Council’s Enterprise Education Officer, said: “The final was a big success and I think the bar has been raised higher this year. All the schools involved did a tremendous job and as judges we found it very difficult to choose the winning teams. “Queen Katherine and Keswick particularly stood out though due to the quality of their presentations, the thought and detail that had gone into their projects and because they have already delivered real results. “The Queen Katherine team have sold their bracelets online while the Keswick pupils were approached directly by a local business who were so impressed with the t-shirts that they wanted to stock and sell them. “Giving Nation is all about helping young people to become enterprising and develop the essential skills for the future whether it be setting up their own business or going into the workplace. The teams that took part this year have certainly shown they are developing these skills.” Richard John, the Citizenship Foundation’s Programme Manager, Giving Nation, said: “I continue to be impressed by the students across Cumbria who place huge importance in supporting their local needs. This county event showcased just some of the dozens of social enterprises being run by schools. These socially-committed students must be commended as they build relations with their communities and social entrepreneurs to maximise their learning and business potential. “The Citizenship Foundation has been working in partnership with Cumbria County Council for the past five years. We love sharing their innovative thinking in tackling social justice across Cumbria within the Giving Nation network of over 600 schools nationally.”
The joint winning team from Queen Katherine School, Kendal
